Why Foreign Investors Buy and Sell Indian Stocks (and How to Read FPI Flows in 2026)

Foreign investors buy Indian stocks when expected, risk-adjusted returns look better than alternatives after accounting for earnings, valuations, currency risk, policy and diversification. They sell when that comparison deteriorates or when global shocks make safer assets more attractive. The same portfolio can switch direction without any single permanent reason.

In regulatory language, these investors are usually foreign portfolio investors (FPIs); market reports may still use the older term FIIs. Net flow figures show the balance of purchases and sales, not the private motive of every investor.

What foreign-investor flows actually measure

An FPI flow is the net result of many transactions by overseas funds, institutions and other eligible portfolio investors. A positive number means purchases exceeded sales for the stated period and market segment. A negative number means sales exceeded purchases. Neither result proves that every foreign investor acted in the same direction.

Flows can be reported daily, monthly, by calendar year, by financial year or by trade type. They can also cover different asset classes. Always identify the period and category before comparing two headlines. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) statistics portal provides current and archived FPI series for those distinctions.

News stories sometimes call all non-resident activity “foreign investment,” but the regulatory categories are narrower. RBI directions separately describe routes for FPIs and for individuals resident outside India, including non-resident Indians (NRIs) and overseas citizens of India (OCIs). Their objectives, permissions and limits are not interchangeable.

Why foreign investors buy Indian stocks

Expected earnings and valuation

Portfolio managers compare what Indian companies might earn and distribute with the prices investors must pay. Faster expected revenue or profit growth can justify buying, while a lower valuation can offer a larger margin of safety. The comparison is relative: an Indian share can be bought because its prospects look better than another country’s shares, even if India’s absolute growth forecast has not changed.

Company results, sector demand, credit conditions and management guidance all feed that assessment. SEBI’s March 2026 Bulletin, discussing February activity, associated the month’s inflow reversal with robust third-quarter corporate earnings. That is an institutional explanation for the episode, not evidence that earnings alone caused every purchase.

Policy, trade and confidence

Government decisions can alter expected cash flows or the risk investors attach to them. A trade agreement may improve export visibility; a budget can change infrastructure spending, taxation or the fiscal outlook; regulatory clarity can reduce uncertainty. Conversely, a tariff threat or an abrupt policy change can make future profits harder to estimate.

SEBI’s discussion of February 2026 cited an interim India–United States trade deal and a growth-oriented Union Budget alongside earnings as possible contributors to the ₹22,615 crore net equity inflow. The bulletin described that amount as the strongest monthly equity inflow in 17 months and a reversal of the selling streak from November 2025 through January 2026, when net equity outflows totaled ₹62,338 crore.

Global portfolio allocation and diversification

Large funds allocate capital across countries, sectors and asset classes. They may add India to diversify an emerging-market or Asia allocation, rebalance after another market rises, or meet a benchmark weight. This decision does not require a dramatic new development inside India; a change in the relative attractiveness of other markets can be enough.

Diversification is not a promise of positive returns. Indian equities still carry local equity, liquidity, political, regulatory and currency risks. It simply explains why a fund may buy Indian shares while remaining cautious about the world economy overall.

Market access

RBI’s consolidated foreign-investment directions permit an eligible FPI to purchase or sell equity instruments of a listed Indian company on a recognised Indian exchange through the FPI route, subject to applicable directions, limits and other requirements. That legal access makes it possible to express a view on Indian companies without acquiring control of an operating business.

Why foreign investors sell Indian stocks

Risk-off shocks and geopolitics

During a risk-off episode, investors often reduce exposure to assets whose prices can fall sharply or whose currencies may weaken. They may raise cash or move toward government bonds and other perceived safe havens. This can produce selling across several emerging markets at once, even when the long-term story of an individual Indian company is unchanged.

SEBI’s April 2026 Bulletin described March 2026 equity selling as a risk-off episode amid heightened tensions in West Asia. Its wording was: “This was primarily due to the escalation of geopolitical tensions in West Asia (US–Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions), which triggered a classic risk-off episode across emerging markets.” That statement is SEBI’s institutional characterization of that month, not a universal explanation for every FPI sale.

Rupee depreciation and translation losses

A foreign investor measures performance in a home currency such as dollars, euros or yen. If an Indian share rises 5% in rupees but the rupee falls 8% against the investor’s currency, the translated return can still be negative before fees and taxes. Hedging can reduce this exposure, but hedges have costs and may not cover every position.

SEBI identified rupee depreciation toward ₹94 per US dollar as reducing dollar-denominated returns during March 2026. Currency moves can therefore prompt selling even when local share prices have not collapsed. The opposite is also possible: a stable or appreciating rupee can improve the translated result and support allocation.

Higher yields on safer alternatives

Investors compare the expected return on Indian equities with the yield available on relatively safer assets. When US Treasury yields rise, dollar-denominated bonds may offer a more compelling risk-adjusted alternative, particularly for a fund that can earn income without taking emerging-market equity risk.

In its March 2026 discussion, SEBI said US Treasury yields rose from 3.96% to 4.4% and that this increased the relative attraction of dollar safe-haven assets. The comparison is about opportunity cost: money leaving Indian shares may be moving into bonds, cash or another country rather than disappearing from markets.

Oil, inflation and macroeconomic pressure

India imports much of the energy it consumes. A sharp rise in crude prices can enlarge the import bill, pressure the rupee, raise inflation and squeeze household or corporate margins. Those effects can lower expected earnings or increase the interest rates investors expect, making equities less attractive.

SEBI included Brent crude above $100 a barrel among the conditions surrounding March 2026 selling. The bulletin did not assign an independently measured causal share to oil, currency, yields or geopolitics; they were overlapping features of the episode.

Trade and company-outlook concerns

Tariffs, weaker export demand, disappointing results or a less supportive policy outlook can reduce the expected payoff from Indian shares. In its August 2025 Bulletin, SEBI said US tariffs raised concerns about India’s trade competitiveness and that a weakening rupee made Indian assets less attractive. These factors can affect specific sectors more than the broad market, so an index-level flow does not reveal which industries a fund sold.

Three recent episodes that show how flows work

Period and source Reported flow What the figure covers Context described by SEBI
March 2026, SEBI April 2026 Bulletin ₹1,17,775 crore net FPI equity selling Indian equities only West Asia tensions, Brent crude above $100 a barrel, rupee near ₹94 per US dollar and US Treasury yields rising from 3.96% to 4.4%
March 2026, same bulletin ₹1,25,736 crore net FPI outflow All covered asset classes, not equities alone Do not compare this total directly with an equity-only number
February 2026, SEBI March 2026 Bulletin ₹22,615 crore net FPI equity buying Indian equities Described as the strongest monthly equity inflow in 17 months; cited an interim India–US trade deal, robust Q3 earnings and a growth-oriented Union Budget as possible contributors
November 2025–January 2026, same bulletin ₹62,338 crore net equity outflow Three-month equity period Selling streak that preceded February’s reversal
August 2025, SEBI August 2025 Bulletin ₹34,993 crore net FPI equity outflow Indian equities Made up of ₹39,064 crore secondary-market outflow and ₹4,070 crore primary-market inflow; SEBI said US tariffs and a weakening rupee likely influenced selling

These are historical observations. The newest monthly equity figure covered here is March 2026, not October 2026. Later data should be checked directly in SEBI’s current statistics before drawing a conclusion about today’s market.

Can foreign investors sell shares while buying IPOs?

Yes. Primary and secondary markets record different activities. The primary market is where newly issued shares are sold in an IPO, follow-on issue or other new offering. The secondary market is where investors trade shares that are already listed.

August 2025 demonstrates the distinction: FPIs were net sellers of ₹39,064 crore in the secondary market but supplied ₹4,070 crore of net buying in the primary market. Their combined equity result was a ₹34,993 crore net outflow. A fund can reject existing stocks at prevailing prices while subscribing to a new issue it believes offers better valuation, access to a preferred company or a different exposure.

How to read an FPI-flow headline correctly

  1. Identify the asset class. Confirm whether the number is for equities, debt, hybrid instruments or all covered assets. March 2026’s ₹1,25,736 crore total outflow is not the same measure as its ₹1,17,775 crore equity outflow.
  2. Check the time window. A daily figure can reflect a single event; a monthly figure smooths several sessions; calendar-year and financial-year totals answer different questions.
  3. Separate primary and secondary activity. A combined number can hide buying in new issues alongside selling in listed stocks.
  4. Pair the flow with market conditions. Look at the rupee, domestic and global yields, oil, geopolitical risk, earnings and policy news during the same period.
  5. Do not treat net flow as a forecast. Buying can follow a price rise, and selling can occur while a fund remains constructive for the long term. The number describes completed transactions, not an assured direction for the next session.
  6. Distinguish investor categories. Do not combine FPI data with NRI, OCI or other non-resident routes unless the data series explicitly does so.

What the FPI route allows—and what it does not tell you

Under RBI’s consolidated directions, the FPI route covers purchases and sales of listed Indian-company equity instruments on recognised exchanges, subject to investment limits and other applicable requirements. Limits can vary by sector and company; there is no single percentage that applies universally to every listed Indian business.

An RBI informational overview of the Portfolio Investment Scheme describes access for foreign institutional investors and NRIs/PIOs through Indian stock exchanges and notes applicable ceilings. That overview uses historical FII terminology, and regulatory limits can change, so current directions should be used for a present-day compliance question rather than relying on an older summary.

Regulatory permission explains how a transaction can occur, not why a particular fund placed it. To infer motivation, an analyst needs the period’s valuation, earnings, currency, rates, policy and risk context—and even then the conclusion remains an interpretation rather than proof of an individual investor’s intent.

A practical framework for investors watching Indian stocks

Start with the return comparison

Ask whether expected company earnings and valuation have improved relative to both Indian alternatives and overseas markets. A large inflow is more informative when it coincides with improving earnings expectations than when it is driven only by short-term price momentum.

Then test currency sensitivity

Track the rupee against the currencies used by the investor base and consider whether positions are hedged. A local-market gain can translate into a loss abroad if currency depreciation is larger than the share-price increase.

Check the global hurdle rate

Rising developed-market yields can increase the return investors demand from Indian equities. Falling yields or easing risk aversion can have the opposite effect, although domestic risks still matter.

Separate the market segments

Review primary and secondary flows independently. A headline net number can conceal an allocation toward IPOs, a sale of older holdings or a switch between sectors.

Use official series and a defined date

For a current reading, use SEBI’s FPI statistics views for the exact date range, asset class and trade category. Record the observation date because a flow total is revised by subsequent transactions and becomes stale as market conditions change.

Limits of the “foreigners are buying” narrative

FPI flows are useful context but are not a standalone buy or sell signal for an individual. They aggregate strategies with different horizons, benchmarks, hedging policies and liquidity needs. A pension fund rebalancing monthly, an index tracker adjusting weights and a tactical fund responding to a geopolitical headline may all appear in the same net number.

Nor does a net outflow establish that India’s companies became fundamentally worse. The immediate cause may be a stronger dollar, a bond-yield move or a temporary need for cash elsewhere. Conversely, a net inflow does not guarantee that prices will rise: investors can buy while valuations are already stretched, and domestic sellers can offset foreign demand.

The most reliable use of flow data is therefore diagnostic. It tells you where overseas portfolio money was net positioned during a defined period. Combine that observation with company-level earnings, valuation, balance-sheet quality and your own time horizon before making an investment decision.
