EPFO moved the filing and payment deadline for the September 2026 Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) from 15 October to 31 October 2026, giving employers 16 additional days. The extension followed a mid-month change in the provident-fund wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, effective 17 September 2026. September payroll therefore has to be calculated in two periods, and employers must update payroll rules, recalculate member-level contributions and validate the revised return before uploading it.
Why did EPFO add 16 days to the September PF deadline?
The extra time is intended to let employers implement the revised wage ceiling and complete the resulting employee-wise calculations. EPFO’s reported notice moved the September 2026 ECR deadline from 15 October to 31 October because payroll systems and contribution data needed consequential changes.

This is an implementation extension, not a general relaxation for every future wage month. It applies to the September 2026 wage-month ECR and its corresponding statutory remittance.

Does September PF use ₹15,000 or ₹25,000?
Both ceilings apply, because the revision took effect during the month. Employers must treat 1–16 September under the ₹15,000 ceiling and 17–30 September under the ₹25,000 ceiling, subject to the applicable EPFO instructions and each member’s eligible wages.

Why a single monthly ceiling is wrong
Applying ₹25,000 to all 30 days would retrospectively apply the new limit to the period before 17 September. Applying ₹15,000 to the entire month would omit the revised ceiling for the period after it took effect. Payroll software must therefore split the wage month and calculate each employee’s EPF, EPS and EDLI data for the correct dates.
What the split means in practice
The return carries member-wise wages and contributions, not just an employer-level total. A payroll team should preserve the two date ranges in its calculation record, apply the relevant ceiling to each range, and reconcile the combined result to the September payroll register before generating the ECR.

What is an ECR and what does the September filing contain?
ECR means Electronic Challan-cum-Return. It is the employer’s monthly electronic submission through the EPFO portal, containing member-wise wage and contribution information for the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (EDLI) schemes.
EPFO’s revamped ECR workflow includes system-based validations, separates return submission from payment generation, calculates interest and damages automatically where applicable, permits revision, and requires sequential month-wise filing. These controls make the underlying payroll data especially important when a ceiling changes halfway through a month.

How should an employer prepare and file the September 2026 ECR?
- Confirm the applicable instructions. Verify that the September 2026 return reflects the revised ₹25,000 ceiling from 17 September while retaining ₹15,000 for 1–16 September.
- Update payroll logic. Configure the payroll system to calculate the two periods separately for every affected member and to produce the required EPF, EPS and EDLI fields.
- Reconcile employee records. Compare the member-wise wages and contributions with payroll registers, attendance or joining-and-exit dates, and the employer’s contribution ledger. Resolve rounding or eligibility differences before upload.
- Upload the ECR. Submit the September return through the EPFO portal and read every validation message in the revamped workflow. Correct rejected records rather than relying on an unchanged file.
- Generate the challan and pay. Complete the corresponding statutory remittance no later than 31 October 2026.
- Retain evidence. Keep the uploaded return, challan, payment confirmation, calculation worksheets and any revised submission history with the September payroll records.
Why filing early is safer
Uploading close to 31 October concentrates demand on the portal and leaves little time to fix member-level errors. The Ministry of Labour and Employment advised employers to avoid end-of-window pressure; a Raipur regional helpdesk was also established for procedural and technical assistance.
Does the extension waive interest or damages?
No September-specific waiver is established by the available notification summaries. The extension changes the compliance date to 31 October 2026, but employers should not assume that interest or damages are automatically cancelled. The revamped ECR system can calculate such amounts, so any charge shown during filing should be reviewed against the applicable rules and the employer’s payment date.

Is the 31 October date valid for later wage months?
No. The relief is expressly tied to the September 2026 wage month, its ECR and the related contribution remittance. Later wage months should continue to follow their own statutory due dates unless EPFO issues a separate notice.

Maintain the final member-wise ECR file, the split-period calculation supporting it, the generated challan, payment proof and any correction or revision trail. These records show how the 1–16 and 17–30 September periods were handled if EPFO queries a contribution or a validation result later.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the new EPFO ECR due date for September 2026?
The revised due date is 31 October 2026 for the September 2026 wage-month ECR and its corresponding statutory remittance. The previous date was 15 October 2026.
How do I split PF wages before and after 17 September?
Run a separate calculation for 1–16 September using the ₹15,000 ceiling and another for 17–30 September using the ₹25,000 ceiling. Combine the resulting member-wise EPF, EPS and EDLI figures in the September ECR after reconciling them to payroll.
