A fixed-rate bond keeps the coupon payments promised when it was issued. If comparable market yields rise, those fixed payments become less attractive, so the bond’s market price usually falls. At that lower price, a new buyer earns a higher yield from the same scheduled payments.
“Bond yields rise” can describe that mechanical increase in a particular bond’s yield after its price falls, or a broader market move caused by changing expectations for interest rates, inflation, risk and bond supply. Separating those meanings makes the subject much easier to understand.

The basic price-yield relationship
A bond is a contract for future cash flows: normally periodic coupon interest and repayment of face value at maturity. Its market price is what an investor will pay today for those future dollars. Yield to maturity (YTM) is the return implied by that price and the promised cash flows, assuming the bond is held to maturity and the issuer makes every payment.
The pricing logic is present value. The bond’s price equals the present value of its coupons and principal, discounted at the return buyers currently require for comparable risk and maturity. When the required return rises, future dollars are discounted more heavily, so their present value falls. When the required return falls, the same future dollars are worth more today.

That is why the SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy states: “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.” The coupon rate on an existing fixed-rate bond does not reset when market rates change. The market price and the yield available to a new buyer change instead.
A simple example
Suppose a bond has a $1,000 face value and a fixed 3% annual coupon, or $30 of interest each year. If newly issued, comparable bonds begin offering 4%, investors will not normally pay $1,000 for the old bond’s 3% payments. Its price must fall far enough that the combination of the $30 coupons and the eventual $1,000 repayment produces a competitive return.
If market yields later fall below 3%, the old bond’s relatively generous coupon becomes more valuable. Buyers may bid its price above $1,000. The coupon remains $30, but the buyer’s YTM is lower because the buyer paid a premium and still receives only $1,000 at maturity.

What happens mathematically when yields change?
For a fixed-rate bond, the future cash flows are set in advance. A simplified pricing expression is:
Price = present value of all coupon payments + present value of the face-value repayment
The discount rate in that calculation is the market yield for a bond with similar maturity, credit quality, liquidity and other terms. Raise the discount rate and the calculated price falls; lower it and the price rises.

The relationship is not perfectly linear for larger moves. A price decline caused by a yield increase can be somewhat different in size from the price increase caused by an equal yield decrease. Duration is the standard measure used to estimate a bond’s percentage price sensitivity to a small yield change; convexity describes the curvature that matters for larger changes. The relevant comparison is a clearly stated estimate for the specific security, not a claim that every bond moves by the same percentage.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin illustrates the mechanics with a hypothetical Treasury bond. It starts with a $1,000 face value, a 3% coupon and 10 years to maturity, priced at $1,000 when comparable rates are 3%. After one year, the bond has nine years left. If comparable market rates rise to 4%, the illustration shows the bond’s price falling to $925 and its YTM rising to 4%.
| Item | At issuance | After one year and a rate increase |
|---|---|---|
| Face value | $1,000 | $1,000 |
| Coupon rate | 3% | 3% (unchanged) |
| Remaining maturity | 10 years | 9 years |
| Comparable market rate | 3% | 4% |
| Illustrated market price | $1,000 | $925 |
| Yield to maturity | 3% | 4% |
This is a worked example, not a report of a particular trade. Its purpose is to show that the same promised payments can have a different market value and a different return to a new buyer.
Yield to maturity, coupon rate and current yield are different
The coupon rate is set by the bond’s terms at issuance and is calculated from face value. A 3% coupon on a $1,000 bond means $30 of annual interest, regardless of whether the bond later trades at $925 or $1,050.
YTM incorporates the purchase price, every remaining coupon, the face-value repayment and the time until maturity. It therefore reflects both interest income and the gain or loss that would result if a bond bought at a discount or premium is held to maturity, assuming payment.

Why market-wide yields rise
A particular bond’s yield can rise simply because its price fell. A broad rise in yields across a maturity range or credit category requires a change in what investors demand for those securities. Several forces can operate at once.
Expectations for future short-term policy rates
Longer-term nominal government yields are often described conceptually as the expected path of future short-term interest rates plus a term premium. If investors expect the central bank to keep its policy rate higher for longer, the expected short-rate path can move upward and pull longer yields higher.
The expected path reflects views about future real interest rates and inflation. Those expectations can change when economic growth, employment, fiscal policy, commodity prices or central-bank communication changes. Expectations are not guarantees: market pricing can reverse when new data alter the outlook.
Inflation expectations and real rates
Investors generally require compensation for the loss of purchasing power caused by inflation. A rise in expected inflation can lift nominal yields even if expected real rates are unchanged. A rise in the real return investors demand can also raise nominal yields.
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) adjust principal and coupon payments for changes in the Consumer Price Index. Their quoted yields are commonly treated as real yields. Comparing a nominal Treasury yield with a similar-maturity TIPS yield gives an estimate of inflation compensation, but not a perfect forecast of the inflation that will actually occur. The difference also reflects liquidity and other market effects.
The term premium
The term premium is additional compensation investors require for holding a longer-duration bond instead of repeatedly investing in short-term instruments. It can rise when interest-rate uncertainty, inflation uncertainty or the risk of future price volatility increases.

Term premiums are not directly observable as a single clean market statistic. They are model estimates that depend on assumptions and can differ or be revised across methods. Consequently, saying that a yield rise came from a higher term premium describes an analytical explanation, not a directly measured component.
Supply, demand and market functioning
Yields can rise when demand for longer-term securities weakens relative to the amount of debt for sale. Investors may require a lower price and therefore a higher yield to absorb additional issuance. Portfolio reallocations, changes in foreign demand, balance-sheet constraints and quantitative tightening can all affect that balance.
Credit and liquidity risk in corporate bonds
Corporate bond yields include a benchmark government-rate component plus compensation for the issuer’s default risk and the bond’s liquidity risk. If investors become less confident that a company will make its payments, the required credit spread can widen and the corporate yield can rise even when Treasury yields are unchanged. A bond that is harder to trade can also require a higher yield.
Two dated episodes show why the cause matters
Federal Reserve context in 2026
The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said Treasury yields had risen since the start of 2026, with the largest increases at shorter maturities. It attributed the move in part to market expectations for a higher federal funds rate path, which pushed up real interest rates, while also discussing inflation developments and uncertainty. That statement describes conditions through that report’s publication; it is not a forecast or a universal explanation for every later yield move.
The 2023 Treasury rise
Federal Reserve researchers’ analysis of the 2023 increase in Treasury yields concluded that a higher term premium was the primary driver in that episode. The analysis identified quantitative tightening, greater Treasury issuance and heightened uncertainty about the economic outlook as contributing forces. This is a historical, model-based finding specific to that period, not a rule that term premiums dominate every rate increase.

Which bonds react most to a yield change?
| Bond characteristic | Typical effect when comparable yields rise | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Longer maturity | Greater percentage price decline than a similar shorter bond | More value comes from cash flows received farther in the future |
| Lower coupon | Greater percentage price decline than a similar higher-coupon bond | Less cash arrives early, leaving more value exposed to distant discounting |
| Higher credit or liquidity risk | Price can fall and yield can rise through a wider credit or liquidity spread | Investors demand more compensation for default or trading risk |
| Inflation-linked structure | Response depends on real yields, inflation adjustments and market expectations | Principal and coupons are linked to CPI rather than fixed entirely in nominal dollars |
When comparing two bonds, keep issuer credit quality and tax treatment in view before attributing a difference to interest-rate sensitivity. Also compare maturity, coupon, price relative to face value, YTM, call or repayment terms, liquidity and your planned holding period. Duration or a stated price-impact estimate is more informative than assuming two bonds with different terms will react identically.

What a rising yield means for an investor
If you sell before maturity
A higher market yield can reduce the price at which you can sell an existing fixed-rate bond. You may realize a loss relative to what you paid, although the result depends on the bond’s purchase price, accrued interest, remaining term and any change in credit quality. If yields fall, the same bond may sell above face value and produce a gain.
Broker commissions, markups or markdowns can reduce sale proceeds. These costs vary by provider, so there is no universal transaction charge to apply to every sale.
If you hold an individual bond to maturity
Holding to maturity can allow an investor to receive the scheduled coupons and face value if the issuer meets its obligations. It does not eliminate default risk or guarantee a positive inflation-adjusted return. A government guarantee of scheduled payments is not a guarantee that the bond’s market price will remain at face value before maturity.
If you own a bond fund
A bond fund continually holds, sells and replaces securities, so its net asset value is marked to market. Rising yields can therefore reduce the fund’s value even though the fund does not have one maturity date at which every investor receives a fixed face value. Over time, reinvestment at higher yields can increase the income generated by the portfolio, but it does not instantly undo a market-price decline.
Will you lose money when interest rates rise?
Not automatically. A price loss becomes realized when you sell at a lower price or when a fund’s lower market value matters to your transaction. An individual bond held to maturity may return its face value and pay its stated interest, subject to issuer performance. However, the investor still bears the opportunity cost of being locked into a below-market coupon, the possibility of default and the risk that inflation erodes purchasing power.
A practical way to analyze a yield move
- Identify the security. Is it a government, corporate or inflation-linked bond? Note its credit quality, maturity, coupon, call provisions, liquidity and tax treatment.
- Separate price mechanics from market causes. If only the bond’s quoted yield changed, check whether its price moved inversely. If an entire maturity sector moved, investigate expectations for policy rates, real rates, inflation and the term premium.
- Check for a credit or liquidity explanation. A corporate yield can rise because its spread widened even when government benchmarks were stable.
- Measure sensitivity appropriately. Use duration or a clearly identified estimate for the particular bond rather than applying a generic percentage.
- Match the conclusion to your holding plan. The relevance of today’s market price differs for someone selling soon, someone holding an individual bond to maturity and someone invested in a continuously traded fund.
Bottom line
Rising yields and falling prices are two sides of the same adjustment for an existing fixed-rate bond: the coupon stays fixed, while the price changes so a new buyer can earn the market-required return. Market yields can rise because investors expect higher future policy rates, real rates or inflation, demand more term premium, face greater bond supply or perceive greater credit and liquidity risk. The effect on you depends on the bond’s maturity and coupon, why the yield moved and whether you must sell before maturity.
