Global liquidity, risk appetite and trading flows can pull many tokens in the same direction as Bitcoin, while differences in network use, adoption, market depth, token supply and project news create divergence. The balance changes by market regime and by coin.
That is why Bitcoin can rise while an altcoin falls, or why a token can outperform for a period and then become more sensitive to a market sell-off. Bitcoin’s price is an important reference point, but correlation with Bitcoin is not proof that Bitcoin caused an altcoin’s move and does not predict the next one.

Shared liquidity makes crypto assets move together—sometimes
Bitcoin is a large, comparatively liquid crypto asset. When investors add or remove risk from the asset class, Bitcoin often acts as a market-wide reference and liquidity anchor. Fund flows, leverage, stablecoin availability, exchange liquidity and changes in risk appetite can therefore push Bitcoin and many altcoins in the same direction.

That co-movement is not constant. In a liquid, optimistic market, traders may rotate from Bitcoin into smaller sectors, allowing some altcoins to rise faster. In a stressed or illiquid market, investors often sell the most speculative positions first, and thin order books can magnify losses. The same altcoin can consequently show a different relationship with Bitcoin in different periods.

What a recent liquidity analysis found
Bitwise Europe’s March 13, 2026 report, “Bitcoin Liquidity Series Pt1: The Bear Market Liquidity Singularity”, describes a contraction in which tightening conditions coincided with greater Bitcoin–altcoin correlation and sensitivity. In that report’s cohort, model and observation window, 90-day Bitcoin–altcoin beta reached 1.45. The report also says the first principal component across major altcoin sectors explained approximately 78% of total return variance.
Those are report-specific results, not permanent market constants. A beta of 1.45 in that analysis means the measured altcoin basket was, on average, more sensitive than Bitcoin during the specified sample; it does not mean every token will move 1.45% when Bitcoin moves 1%, or that Bitcoin mechanically causes the move.
Each altcoin has a different economic exposure
Bitcoin and an altcoin may share a ticker on the same exchange, but they do not represent the same asset. Their networks can serve different users, settle different transactions and depend on different sources of demand.
Network purpose and adoption
S&P Global contrasts Bitcoin’s transaction and mining-related value proposition with Ether’s transaction validation and the utility created by applications running on Ethereum. Adoption, technology, confidence and liquidity are all potential drivers, and the publication cautions that crypto trends can change. A token tied to decentralized-app activity, for example, may respond to application usage or developer activity in ways that do not affect Bitcoin’s mining or monetary narrative.
Other altcoins may represent payment networks, data services, gaming ecosystems, governance rights or infrastructure. If demand for a particular service grows, the related token can outperform Bitcoin even when the broader market is flat. If the service loses users, faces a technical problem or encounters regulatory uncertainty, the token can lag while Bitcoin rises.

Project news and market-specific catalysts
Binance Research’s historical analysis, which covers data through 2019, identifies project-specific news and catalysts, exchange-listing effects and consensus mechanisms as possible contributors to different correlations among cryptoassets. A software upgrade, a change in validator economics, a security incident, a major partnership or a listing can change expectations for one project without changing Bitcoin’s outlook. Because that analysis uses an older sample, it is best treated as a list of mechanisms to investigate rather than a current ranking of coins.
Supply and dilution
Circulating supply, unlock schedules, staking rewards, token burns and treasury sales affect the amount of an asset available to trade. Two coins can receive the same amount of new demand but show different price responses if one is experiencing heavy token issuance or a large scheduled unlock. Supply changes are therefore a separate exposure from Bitcoin’s own issuance schedule and mining economics.
Macro conditions can affect the whole market without explaining every coin
Interest rates, money supply, the US dollar and broader risk conditions influence investors’ willingness to hold volatile assets. S&P Global’s analysis, using data through March 2023, examined historical associations between crypto indices and monetary conditions. It reports a –0.33 daily return correlation between the S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Market Index and the two-year US Treasury risk-neutral yield for data from February 2017 through March 2023. It also found an inverse relationship in 63% of rolling three-month observations since May 2017 through its analysis period.
These are index-level historical observations, not estimates for every altcoin. A macro shock can move Bitcoin and altcoins together, but a token-specific event can overwhelm that common influence. S&P Global explicitly says the data do not establish causality. Its article states: “because correlation does not substitute for causation, it is not obvious that a change in the US Dollar Index can provide insight into future movements in the crypto markets.”
Use macro relationships as context rather than as a trading signal. A falling yield or weaker dollar does not guarantee that an individual altcoin will rise; the coin may have poor liquidity, an upcoming unlock or a project-specific problem.

“Altcoin season” measures breadth, not just the size of the market
Two popular indicators answer different questions. An altcoin-season index asks how many major altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin. Total altcoin market capitalization asks how much the entire group is worth. A handful of large assets can lift aggregate capitalization while most tokens still underperform Bitcoin.

Coinbase Institutional describes a common definition of altcoin season as at least 75% of the top 50 altcoins by market capitalization outperforming Bitcoin over the preceding 90 days. That is an attributed definition, not a universal industry standard. Results can change if the ranking, look-back period, quote currency or return calculation changes.
What Coinbase reported in August 2025
In its August 2025 outlook, Coinbase Institutional reported that Bitcoin dominance had fallen from 65% in May to approximately 59% by August 2025. It also said total altcoin market capitalization had risen more than 50% from early July to $1.4 trillion as of August 12, 2025. Despite that increase, the Altcoin Season Index was in the low 40s, below the cited threshold of 75. Coinbase attributed part of the discrepancy to interest concentrated in Ether.
Those figures are dated snapshots, not current market readings. The lesson is methodological: a rising altcoin market-cap line does not prove broad altcoin outperformance. Check the breadth of winners and compare each asset with Bitcoin over the same interval.
Trading structure changes the relationship you observe
The quote currency and trading venue used in a chart can alter its apparent performance. A return measured in US dollars answers whether an asset gained purchasing power against the dollar. A return measured against BTC answers whether it outperformed Bitcoin. An altcoin can rise in dollars while still losing value relative to BTC if Bitcoin rises faster.

Binance Research’s historical work discusses how reliance on Bitcoin-denominated pairs declined during its 2018 sample as stablecoin volume rose. As market participants use more dollar-linked pairs, the path from fiat or stablecoins into an altcoin does not have to pass through Bitcoin. That can reduce or change mechanical co-movement in observed prices. It is therefore inaccurate to say that all altcoins are simply “priced in Bitcoin.”
Liquidity and order-book depth
Market capitalization is not the same as tradable liquidity. A token may have a large stated market value but little depth near the current price. A modest market order can then move its price substantially, producing a larger apparent beta or a sharper divergence from Bitcoin. During stress, bid-ask spreads can widen and forced liquidations can create temporary moves that say little about long-run utility.
How to compare an altcoin with Bitcoin correctly
Use a consistent process before concluding that one asset is decoupling or outperforming.
- Set the exact period. Use the same start and end timestamps for both assets. State whether the window is 24 hours, 90 days, one year or another interval.
- Choose one quote currency. Compare both returns in US dollars, or compare both against BTC, and do not mix the two interpretations.
- Define the return convention. Say whether you are using simple price return, total return including staking or another measure. Do not compare a total-return series with a price-only series.
- Separate correlation from beta. Correlation summarizes how two return series move together over a specified window. Beta estimates sensitivity to a benchmark under a particular model and sample. Neither statistic establishes causation or guarantees a future result.
- Check liquidity. Review traded volume, bid-ask spreads and order-book depth. Treat a move in a thin market differently from a move in a deep market.
- Review market-cap and supply data. Note circulating supply, fully diluted supply, unlock dates, staking issuance, burns and treasury sales.
- Identify the sector and use case. Compare a smart-contract platform with other smart-contract platforms, a payment token with similar payment networks, and so on. Bitcoin’s exposure is not a neutral proxy for every category.
- List identifiable catalysts. Check for upgrades, listings, governance votes, legal events, security incidents, partnerships and changes in network usage during the period.
- Test breadth. If claiming an “altcoin season,” count how many assets beat BTC rather than relying only on aggregate capitalization.
| Comparison question | What to hold constant | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Did the asset gain value? | Same quote currency and return convention | Dollar gains and BTC-relative gains can point in opposite directions. |
| Did it move with Bitcoin? | Same dates, sampling frequency and cohort | Correlation changes with the window and assets included. |
| Was the move amplified? | Benchmark, beta model and sample | Beta is model-dependent and is not a universal sensitivity constant. |
| Can the result be traded? | Liquidity, spreads and order-book depth | Thin markets can exaggerate both gains and losses. |
| Was it broad altcoin outperformance? | Defined universe, ranking date and 90-day rule | A few large tokens can raise total market cap without a broad rally. |
Common interpretation errors
Assuming Bitcoin causes every altcoin move
Bitcoin may be the most visible market variable, but simultaneous movement can result from a third factor such as liquidity or risk appetite. Correlation is evidence of co-movement in a sample, not proof of a causal chain.
Treating one beta as a permanent rule
The 1.45 beta reported by Bitwise Europe belongs to its specified contraction, cohort and model. It cannot be applied automatically to a different token, market phase or time horizon.

Calling a market-cap increase an altcoin season
Use the breadth test and disclose the threshold, universe, look-back period and quote currency. Otherwise, a concentration in one or two large assets can create a misleading label.
Ignoring supply events
Price charts alone can miss unlocks, emissions or treasury sales. A project can attract users and still underperform if new supply arrives faster than demand.
Comparing unmatched data
Different exchanges, closing times, currencies and return definitions can produce different results. Keep the measurement setup consistent before drawing a conclusion.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The available studies support a regime-dependent view: shared liquidity and macro conditions can increase co-movement, while utility, adoption, supply, market structure and project catalysts create dispersion. They do not establish a current universal ranking of which altcoins are most correlated with Bitcoin. Producing one would require a consistently defined, up-to-date dataset with a stated cohort and window.
For a personal-finance decision, treat Bitcoin-relative performance as one risk indicator rather than a promise of diversification. An altcoin may have behaved independently in one period and become highly sensitive in the next. Evaluate its liquidity, supply schedule, use case and identifiable risks alongside any correlation or beta statistic.
