Why Choose a CySEC-Regulated Broker?

A CySEC licence does not guarantee profits, but it places a broker inside a verifiable EU framework for conduct, client assets, retail CFD protections, complaints and eligible compensation.

Choosing a CySEC-regulated broker gives you more than a logo on a website. It places the broker’s authorised legal entity inside a supervisory framework covering conduct of business, client assets, retail CFD protections, complaints and—where the eligibility rules are met—investor compensation.

That framework does not make trading safe or profitable. You can still lose money, face delays, encounter poor execution or deal with a broker that later fails. The practical benefit is that you can verify who you are dealing with and rely on defined protections when the broker provides regulated investment services.

What does “CySEC-regulated” actually mean?

CySEC is the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, Cyprus’s national regulator for investment firms and other financial-market entities. A broker authorised in Cyprus is usually a Cyprus Investment Firm (CIF).

A CIF providing investment services operates under Cyprus law and the EU’s MiFID II and MiFIR framework for the activities covered by its authorisation. The authorisation should identify the firm’s legal name, licence number and approved services. It is not enough for a trading brand to say that its parent company is regulated somewhere in Europe.

This distinction matters because a financial group may operate several companies. You might see one brand, register with another company and sign a client agreement with a third legal entity. The protections attached to the CySEC licence apply to the authorised entity and the services it is permitted to provide—not automatically to every company, app or website using the same brand.

1. You can check whether the broker is authorised

EU investment firms must obtain authorisation before providing regulated investment services. National regulators must maintain public registers showing the firms they supervise and the activities for which they are authorised.

To check a Cyprus-based broker, use CySEC’s Investment Firms (Cypriot) register. The register displays information such as:

  • the firm’s exact legal name;
  • CySEC licence number and licence date;
  • company registration number;
  • contact details; and
  • approved trade names, where applicable.

Do not stop at finding a similar name. Confirm that the status is current and that the listed investment services match what the broker is offering. A firm that appears only in CySEC’s Former Investment Firms section is not the same as an actively authorised firm.

Some brokers are authorised in another EU or EEA country and provide services in Cyprus under cross-border arrangements. Those firms appear in CySEC’s Investment Firms (Member States) register rather than the Cyprus-authorised CIF list.

2. You can verify the website, not just the brand

Fraudsters can copy a broker’s name, logo and licence number. CySEC specifically warns that displaying the CySEC logo or claiming to be authorised does not prove that a firm is regulated.

Check the firm’s web address against CySEC’s List of Approved Domains. The domain you use to open an account should be associated with the legal entity in the register. Also check the List of Non-Approved Domains.

As a second check, search the firm in ESMA’s public register. ESMA recommends confirming that:

  1. the firm appears in the keyword search;
  2. its entity type is Investment firm; and
  3. its status is active.

Before depositing, compare the legal entity shown in the account agreement, the domain in your browser and the entity shown in the regulator’s register. If they do not line up, stop and ask the broker to explain the discrepancy.

3. MiFID II sets conduct and disclosure standards

MiFID II requires investment firms to act honestly, fairly and professionally in accordance with their clients’ best interests. Information and marketing communications must be fair, clear and not misleading.

In practical terms, the broker should provide information about:

  • the firm and its services;
  • the financial instruments available;
  • proposed investment strategies;
  • execution venues;
  • fees, spreads and other charges; and
  • relevant risks.

Product manufacturers and distributors must also consider the product’s target market and whether distribution arrangements are appropriate.

These rules improve the information you receive and constrain some sales practices. They do not require the broker to provide profitable signals, prevent a losing trade or guarantee that a recommendation will work. A regulated firm can still offer a highly speculative product, provided it complies with the applicable rules and disclosures.

4. Client money and financial instruments have safeguarding requirements

CySEC Directive DI87-01 covers the safeguarding of financial instruments and funds belonging to clients. It includes requirements relating to depositing client funds and financial instruments, the use of client assets, governance arrangements, external-auditor reporting, product governance and certain fees or non-monetary benefits.

The purpose is to reduce the risk that client money or investments are improperly used or mixed with the firm’s own assets. This is one of the most important differences between using an authorised investment firm and sending money to an unregulated trading website.

Safeguarding is not the same as an absolute guarantee. Banking failure, fraud, operational errors, insolvency and other risks can still create problems. You should also read the broker’s client-asset policy to understand how cash and financial instruments are held, particularly where the broker uses third-party banks or custodians.

5. Retail CFD accounts receive standardised protections

If you trade CFDs as a retail client, EU product-intervention measures apply important restrictions. The original maximum opening leverage levels are:

Underlying Maximum retail CFD leverage
Major currency pairs 30:1
Non-major currency pairs, gold and major indices 20:1
Commodities other than gold and non-major equity indices 10:1
Individual equities and other reference values 5:1
Cryptocurrencies 2:1

The measures also include:

  • Margin close-out: positions are subject to close-out when account equity falls to 50% of the minimum required margin, calculated on a per-account basis.
  • Negative-balance protection: for CFDs connected to the CFD trading account, your aggregate liability is limited to the funds in that CFD account.
  • Incentive restrictions: brokers cannot use certain bonuses or inducements to encourage retail CFD trading.
  • Standard risk warnings: the broker must show the proportion of retail accounts that lose money when trading CFDs.

Negative-balance protection does not mean that trading is low-risk. You can still lose the entire amount in the CFD account. It also does not automatically apply to every derivative, cryptocurrency product or exchange-traded instrument.

There is an additional point for newer products marketed as “perpetual futures” or “perpetual contracts”. On 24 February 2026, ESMA reminded firms that products meeting the definition of a CFD may be subject to the same leverage, close-out, negative-balance and risk-warning measures. The product’s legal classification and your client status matter.

6. Eligible clients may have access to the Investor Compensation Fund

The Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund for IF Clients (ICF) is intended to protect covered claims against participating investment firms when the required legal conditions are met. A compensation process generally begins after CySEC determines that a member appears unable to meet its obligations because of its financial circumstances, or after a court ruling has the relevant effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For covered clients, compensation is generally the lower of:

90% of the client’s cumulative covered claims, or €20,000.

That is not €20,000 for every account, platform or currency. The calculation generally covers the client’s total eligible claims against the ICF member, regardless of the number of accounts or where in the EU the covered services were provided.

The ICF is not deposit insurance and does not cover:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • losses caused by market movements;
  • a losing investment strategy;
  • normal withdrawal delays;
  • losses above the applicable compensation limit; or
  • claims outside the Fund’s eligibility rules.

Coverage depends on the service, client and claim satisfying the relevant conditions. Treat it as a limited backstop against certain firm failures—not as protection against trading risk.

7. There is a defined complaint process

If something goes wrong, the normal route is not to email CySEC first. Follow the broker’s internal complaint procedure:

  1. Submit the complaint to the CIF involved and keep evidence, including account statements, order tickets, emails and screenshots.
  2. The CIF should acknowledge receipt in writing within five days.
  3. It should provide a written response within two months, or explain why more time is needed. The maximum response period is three months.
  4. If the complaint is rejected or no response arrives within three months, you may be able to contact the Financial Ombudsman for mediation, subject to its eligibility rules.

CySEC can receive information about a firm’s conduct as a supervisory signal, but it says it does not have restitution powers. It does not investigate individual complaints in order to award compensation or order a broker to repay your trading losses.

8. EU passporting can make cross-border services possible

A CySEC-authorised firm may provide authorised investment services in other EU member states through MiFID II passporting and the relevant notification arrangements. This can make it easier for a broker to serve clients across Europe from one regulated home state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Passporting is not a blanket approval for every product or customer. The service must fall within the firm’s authorisation, and host-country rules may affect how the business is conducted. Check which entity serves you and whether the product is covered by its permissions.

What CySEC regulation does not guarantee

Common assumption What is actually true
“CySEC guarantees my investment.” It does not protect against market losses, bad strategies or unprofitable trades.
“The ICF pays €20,000 per account.” The limit generally applies to cumulative covered claims against the member and is the lower of 90% or €20,000.
“CySEC will recover my money.” CySEC has no restitution powers. Other complaint and compensation routes have separate conditions.
“The group is regulated, so every group website is covered.” Only the named authorised entity, approved domain and authorised services are relevant.
“A regulated broker cannot fail.” Supervision reduces some risks but does not eliminate insolvency or operational failure.
“CySEC regulation means retail leverage of 1:500.” Retail CFD leverage is subject to product limits. Higher leverage may involve another product or professional-client status.

Retail or professional account?

Retail clients receive the strongest standardised protections. A client can request professional classification only if the broker determines that the client meets the relevant knowledge, experience and financial-capability criteria.

The process requires a written request, a clear warning about protections and compensation rights that may be lost, and written confirmation that the client understands the consequences. A broker advertising much higher leverage may be offering professional-client terms. Higher leverage is not evidence of stronger regulation; it may mean fewer retail protections.

CySEC broker verification checklist

Before funding an account, work through this list:

  1. Find the exact legal entity in CySEC’s Cypriot Investment Firms register, or confirm the relevant EU home-state authorisation for a passported firm.
  2. Check that its status is current and that it is not listed only among former investment firms.
  3. Compare the licence number and approved services with the products you intend to trade.
  4. Verify the website or app domain in CySEC’s approved-domain list.
  5. Check CySEC’s non-approved-domain list.
  6. Confirm that the legal entity in the client agreement matches the register.
  7. Identify whether the account is retail or professional.
  8. Read the CFD leverage, margin close-out and negative-balance terms.
  9. Review the client-money, withdrawal, conflicts-of-interest and complaints policies before depositing.
  10. Read the risk warning and the broker’s percentage of losing retail CFD accounts.

FAQ

Is a CySEC-regulated broker safe?

CySEC regulation provides a supervisory and conduct framework, client-asset safeguards and possible access to the Investor Compensation Fund for eligible claims. It does not eliminate market, fraud, operational or insolvency risk, and it does not guarantee profits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the CySEC Investor Compensation Fund cover trading losses?

No. The ICF is designed for eligible covered claims connected with a participating investment firm’s failure to meet its obligations. It does not compensate for losing trades or adverse market movements.

How much does the CySEC compensation scheme pay?

For covered clients, compensation is generally the lower of 90% of cumulative covered claims and €20,000. The limit generally applies to the client’s total covered claims against the member, not separately to each account.

How can I check whether a broker is really regulated by CySEC?

Search the exact legal entity in CySEC’s Investment Firms register, confirm its status and permissions, check the website in CySEC’s approved-domain list and compare the result with the client agreement. You can also verify the firm in ESMA’s register, where the entity type should be Investment firm and the status active.

Can a CySEC broker offer 1:500 leverage?

Not generally to a retail client trading a CFD covered by the applicable product-intervention rules. Higher leverage may relate to a different product or professional-client classification, which can involve the loss of retail protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I have a complaint against a CySEC broker?

Complain to the broker first and retain all supporting records. The firm should acknowledge the complaint within five days and normally respond within two months, with a maximum process period of three months. If unresolved, you may be able to approach the Financial Ombudsman, subject to eligibility.

The Bottom Line

A CySEC-regulated broker can be a sensible choice because its legal identity, website and authorised services can be checked, while MiFID II, client-asset rules, retail CFD restrictions and formal complaint procedures provide a defined layer of protection.

Verify the specific entity before signing up. Regulation is a reason to begin comparing brokers—not a substitute for checking fees, execution, withdrawals, product risk and whether the account’s protections match your client status.
