Why Bond ETF Prices Fall When Yields Rise

Bond ETF prices generally fall when market yields rise because the bonds in the fund become less valuable relative to newly issued bonds offering higher yields. An older bond with a fixed coupon must usually trade at a lower price so its remaining payments provide a competitive return. The fund’s duration gives a useful first estimate of the price impact, but credit spreads, income, convexity, portfolio changes, hedges, and the difference between the ETF’s market price and its net asset value (NAV) can change the result.

The fixed-coupon reason prices and yields move in opposite directions

Imagine a bond paying a fixed 3% coupon while comparable new bonds begin offering 4%. The older bond still pays the same dollar coupons, so investors would not normally pay the same price for it as for a new bond offering the higher yield. Its market price has to fall until the coupon payments and repayment at maturity produce a yield closer to what the market now demands.

The reverse also applies. If comparable market yields fall, an existing bond paying a relatively generous coupon becomes more attractive, and its price generally rises. As iShares puts it, “Bond prices and bond yields generally are inversely related, meaning when yields increase, bond prices drop and vice versa.” This is a general relationship, not a promise that every bond or every fund will move by the same percentage at every moment.

A bond ETF owns many securities, so the same repricing happens across its portfolio. The ETF’s share price reflects investors’ bids and offers for the fund, while the NAV represents the value calculated for the underlying holdings. Those two prices usually stay close but can differ, especially when the bond market is less liquid or when the ETF and its holdings are being valued at different times.

How a yield increase reaches an ETF share price

1. The underlying bonds are repriced

When market yields rise, the present value of a bond’s future coupons and principal falls. Longer-dated cash flows are generally more sensitive because investors must wait longer to receive them. A portfolio containing many long-maturity, fixed-rate bonds therefore tends to show a larger immediate price response than a portfolio of short-maturity bonds.

2. The portfolio’s NAV changes

Fund administrators value the bonds held by the ETF and use those values to calculate NAV. If the holdings are worth less after yields rise, NAV normally declines. The valuation inputs can differ by pricing service, market liquidity, and time of day, so the NAV change is not always identical to the price change visible on an exchange.

3. The ETF trades around NAV

ETF shares trade continuously during market hours. Buyers and sellers may temporarily push the market price above NAV (a premium) or below NAV (a discount). In a fast-moving market, the ETF can appear to fall more or less than the reported NAV because the exchange price incorporates current trading conditions while the underlying bonds may be priced less frequently.

4. Coupon income offsets part of the price loss

A falling price is only one component of a bond ETF’s total return. The fund continues to receive coupon income and may distribute some of it to shareholders. That income can offset part of a price decline over a holding period. It does not, however, prevent the market value of the bonds from falling when required yields rise.

Duration is the first estimate of rate sensitivity

Duration summarizes how sensitive a bond or portfolio is to a change in yields. A simple first-order rule is:

Estimated percentage price change ≈ −duration × change in yield

Use the change in yield in decimal form. A one-percentage-point increase is 0.01; a one-percentage-point decrease is −0.01. The negative sign expresses the usual inverse relationship.

The duration-5 example

iShares gives the example of a bond with a duration of 5: if interest rates fall by 1 percentage point, its value is expected to rise by about 5%. Applying the same approximation in the other direction, a duration-5 portfolio might lose about 5% for a 1-percentage-point rise in relevant yields before income and other effects.

Yield move Duration-5 first estimate Interpretation
+1.00 percentage point About −5% Price decline, before income and other drivers
+0.50 percentage point About −2.5% Smaller increase in yields, smaller estimated decline
−0.50 percentage point About +2.5% Estimated price gain as yields fall
−1.00 percentage point About +5% Estimated gain, not a guaranteed result

This is an approximation, not an exact daily-return formula. It assumes the relevant part of the yield curve moves in a reasonably comparable way and does not fully capture convexity, changing credit spreads, portfolio turnover, embedded options, leverage, or derivatives. Effective-duration calculations also use models and assumptions. BlackRock describes effective duration as an aggregate measure that can adjust for leverage, hedging transactions, and non-bond holdings, so figures from different fund providers are not always perfectly interchangeable.

Why longer duration usually means a larger move

All else equal, a fund with a longer duration has more price exposure to a given yield change. As a dated illustration, the TLT fund page reported an effective duration of 14.69 years on October 9, 2026. A rough one-percentage-point rise in relevant yields would therefore imply a first-order price effect near 14.69% in the opposite direction, before income and other factors. That is an illustration of sensitivity, not a forecast or recommendation, and the figure can change as the portfolio changes.

By contrast, the IGBH fund page reported an effective duration of 0.10 years on October 9, 2026. Its stated strategy uses interest-rate swaps to manage duration while retaining exposure to long-term investment-grade corporate bonds. The near-zero duration limits broad interest-rate sensitivity in the estimate, but it does not eliminate credit, liquidity, counterparty, spread, or market-price risks.

Illustration Effective duration (October 9, 2026) What the number indicates
TLT 14.69 years High sensitivity to changes in relevant long-term yields
IGBH 0.10 years Much lower measured rate sensitivity after its stated swap-based hedge

Why the actual return can differ from the duration estimate

The yield curve may not move in parallel

“Yields rise” is not one single event. Short-term, intermediate-term, and long-term yields can move by different amounts. A fund concentrated in 20-year bonds responds mainly to the long end of the curve, while a short-term fund responds to different maturities. A single portfolio duration cannot describe every twist, steepening, or flattening of the curve.

Credit spreads can move independently of government yields

Corporate and other credit funds are affected by the extra yield investors demand over comparable government bonds. That extra amount is the credit spread. Spreads can widen when investors become more concerned about issuers or the economy, pushing prices down even if government yields are unchanged or falling. Spreads can narrow and support prices even during a period of rising government yields.

Convexity changes the size of large moves

Duration is a linear approximation. Bond price relationships are curved, a property known as convexity. For larger yield changes, the actual price response can be higher or lower than the duration-only estimate. Bonds with embedded call or put options can behave differently again because the expected timing of cash flows changes as rates move.

Portfolio composition changes over time

An ETF may receive maturities, buy new bonds, sell holdings, or change its exposure through derivatives. Its duration, credit mix, average maturity, and sector weights therefore move over time. A duration number is meaningful only with its measurement date and definition.

Hedges reduce one exposure, not every exposure

A rate hedge can offset much of the effect of a particular interest-rate move, but swaps and other derivatives introduce their own valuation, counterparty, collateral, and basis considerations. A hedged corporate-bond ETF can still lose value if credit spreads widen or if trading conditions deteriorate. Treating a low duration as a guarantee against losses is a mistake.

A historical example: the 2022–2023 rate shock

The Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index decreased by 8.8% from March 2022 to July 2023, according to an iShares/BlackRock educational article published October 7, 2025 and accessed October 13, 2026. The source links that period to the Federal Reserve’s increase in short-term rates. The figure is an example for that broad index and period; it is not the return of every bond ETF, and the full decline should not be attributed mechanically to one policy rate. Duration, curve changes, credit conditions, income, and valuation all affect an individual fund.

How to diagnose a bond ETF price move

  1. Identify which price moved. Check the exchange-traded market price, the published NAV, and the premium or discount between them. A sharp market-price move with a smaller NAV move may reflect trading conditions rather than an equivalent change in every holding.
  2. Record the fund’s effective duration and date. Use the current fund page or prospectus. Do not apply an old duration figure to a portfolio that has changed.
  3. Match the fund to the relevant yield. A Treasury fund is most directly exposed to the maturities it owns. A corporate fund responds to both government yields and credit spreads. A long-duration fund is not explained by a short-term rate move alone.
  4. Check credit spreads and sector exposure. For corporate, high-yield, mortgage, or emerging-market funds, determine whether spread widening or a sector-specific shock contributed to the decline.
  5. Separate price return from income. Review distributions and the fund’s stated yield measure over the same period. Income can cushion a price loss but does not reverse the repricing of the holdings.
  6. Review hedges and derivatives. Confirm what a swap or other hedge is designed to offset and what exposures remain. A hedge may target duration while leaving credit exposure intact.
  7. Check trading conditions. Look at bid-ask spreads, unusual volume, and the time used for NAV valuation. These details help explain a temporary premium or discount.

How to compare bond ETFs when rates are changing

Use the same date and definitions for every fund. The following framework separates the risks that are often mixed together:

Comparison point What to examine Why it matters
Effective duration Years, definition, and measurement date Longer duration generally means greater sensitivity to a comparable yield move
Credit exposure Treasury, investment-grade corporate, lower-rated, mortgage, or other holdings Spread changes can add to or offset the effect of government-rate changes
Hedging design Whether swaps or other derivatives are used and which exposure they target A rate hedge does not remove credit or trading risk
Costs and income Current prospectus expense ratio and clearly identified yield measure Costs reduce returns, and a yield statistic is not a total-return forecast
Trading and valuation Market price, NAV, premium or discount, bid-ask spread, and valuation timing These determine how closely the price you trade follows the portfolio value

Do not confuse distribution yield with expected return

A fund’s distribution yield describes recent income under a stated methodology. The 30-day SEC yield is a standardized recent-income measure, not a promise of future distributions and not a forecast of total return. A fund can show a substantial yield while losing more than that amount in price when rates or spreads rise. Conversely, a price gain can lift total return even when the distribution yield is unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For any numerical yield, return, expense ratio, or duration, use the current fund page and prospectus and note the date. These figures change as holdings, prices, income, and market conditions change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming the inverse move is exact: Duration gives a first estimate; convexity, curve shape, spreads, income, and trading can produce a different result.
  • Using a fund’s distribution yield as a safety margin: Income does not cap the possible price decline.
  • Comparing undated duration numbers: A duration without a measurement date may no longer describe the portfolio.
  • Treating a hedge as a complete shield: Hedging interest-rate exposure leaves other risks in place.
  • Looking only at the ETF ticker price: Compare market price with NAV and inspect any premium or discount.
  • Blaming every decline on the central bank: Policy rates can influence the market, but the ETF’s maturity profile, spreads, income, and valuation determine its realized return.

What the price move means for an investor

A falling bond ETF price after yields rise is usually the market updating the value of its existing cash flows to compete with higher-yielding alternatives. Start with duration to estimate the scale, then investigate the yield-curve segment, credit spreads, income, hedges, portfolio changes, and market-price/NAV gap. That process explains the move without turning a broad relationship into a precise prediction for any particular fund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a bond ETF eventually return to its old price when yields stop rising?

Not necessarily. Stabilizing yields stop one source of downward pressure, but the ETF’s future price also depends on income, credit spreads, portfolio turnover, curve movements, and whether its market price is at a premium or discount to NAV. Unlike an individual bond held to maturity, a bond ETF generally continues to buy and sell holdings and does not have one maturity date at which all investors receive a fixed principal amount.

Can a bond ETF rise even while some yields are rising?

Yes. The fund may be exposed to maturities whose yields are falling, its credit spreads may narrow, coupon income may outweigh the price effect over the period, or its market price may move from a discount toward NAV. The relevant yield change and the fund’s other exposures matter.
