Why Berkshire Hathaway Is No Longer Really a Warren Buffett Company

Berkshire Hathaway is no longer a Warren Buffett-led company in the operating sense. Since January 1, 2026, Greg Abel has been president and CEO, and on September 18 Berkshire made the separation explicit: Warren Buffett became chairman emeritus, Howard G. Buffett became board chair, and Buffett remained a director. Buffett’s ownership, reputation and principles still influence Berkshire, but day-to-day authority now belongs to Abel.

That distinction matters because Buffett previously combined the CEO, chair, capital allocator, annual-letter author and public-interpreter roles in one person. Berkshire’s latest move distributes those functions across an operating successor and a family-linked guardian of governance and culture.

Is Berkshire Hathaway still Warren Buffett’s company?

It is still Buffett’s institution in heritage and culture, but it is no longer his company in the managerial sense. The September 18, 2026 leadership change ended the arrangement in which one person simultaneously ran operations, chaired the board, allocated capital and explained Berkshire to shareholders.

Greg Abel now has operating authority. Howard G. Buffett chairs the board and is positioned to protect Berkshire’s values. Warren Buffett remains a director and an influential shareholder for now, but he is no longer the executive in charge.

What changed on September 18, 2026?

Berkshire’s announcement formalized the final stage of a succession plan that had already transferred the CEO job to Abel at the start of the year.

Date Change Practical significance
January 1, 2026 Greg Abel succeeded Warren Buffett as president and CEO. Operating leadership moved to a professional successor.
September 18, 2026 Buffett became chairman emeritus and remained a director; Howard G. Buffett became chair of the board. Executive management and board stewardship became separate roles.
By December 31, 2034 Buffett intends to donate all remaining Berkshire shares to four foundations, subject to mortality uncertainty. Buffett’s direct ownership block is expected to decline over time, although the stated timetable is not guaranteed.

The change is therefore more than a title adjustment. It creates a structure in which the person making operating decisions is not the same person who embodies Berkshire’s history and safeguards its culture.

Who runs Berkshire now?

Greg Abel has the operating mandate

Abel is CEO and is responsible for running Berkshire’s collection of businesses and making decisions within the authority delegated by the board. The 2026 proxy says directors discuss succession planning at every board meeting and had already approved Abel’s appointment effective January 1, 2026. That record supports a planned institutional handoff rather than an emergency replacement.

Berkshire’s operating platform gives Abel something Buffett’s personal stock-picking image does not: a large, diversified group of businesses that can be managed through systems and delegated authority. Berkshire describes operations spanning insurance and reinsurance, utilities and energy, freight rail, manufacturing, services and retailing. Its 2026 news archive also lists continuing acquisitions, including OxyChem and Taylor Morrison.

Howard Buffett is the board and culture steward

Howard G. Buffett’s job is not to run subsidiaries or replace Abel as capital allocator. He is chairman of the board, with a role centered on governance and the preservation of Berkshire’s principles.

“Greg runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values – both worth more than anything on our balance sheet. Think of Howard as a policy the shareholders own and hope never to claim against.”

Warren Buffett’s formulation, as reproduced by the Associated Press in 2026

The wording captures the new division of labor: Abel is the operating executive, while Howard Buffett is intended to be a cultural backstop if Berkshire’s identity or standards appear to be at risk.

Why does separating the roles change Berkshire’s identity?

For decades, Berkshire’s public identity was fused with Warren Buffett personally. Investors received strategy, capital-allocation explanations and much of the company’s interpretation through Buffett’s letters, annual-meeting appearances and reputation. A single voice made a sprawling conglomerate feel unusually coherent.

The new arrangement makes Berkshire less dependent on that personal fusion. Management can be evaluated on Abel’s decisions, while the board can assess whether those decisions remain consistent with Berkshire’s long-standing approach. That is a different kind of company even if the subsidiaries, balance sheet and stated values remain familiar.

It also changes communication. Buffett’s personal letters and annual-meeting presence set the tone for shareholder relations. Under Abel, Berkshire’s disclosures and board communications will carry more of the explanatory burden, rather than relying on one founder-like interpreter.

How credible is the succession?

The transition has several features that make it more credible than a sudden handoff.

  • It was approved in advance. The 2026 proxy says the board addresses succession planning at every meeting and had formally approved Abel as CEO before the effective date.
  • The chair change was part of the same plan. Berkshire’s September release described Howard Buffett’s appointment as a long-standing succession step, not a reaction to a crisis.
  • Abel inherits a functioning operating base. Berkshire’s businesses cover multiple industries and continue to make acquisitions, reducing the need for the CEO to recreate the company from scratch.
  • Buffett’s advice remains available during the transition. The 2025 annual report said Buffett had been in the office five days a week and available to help with insurance underwriting, non-insurance operations and capital deployment.

That last point is important. The handoff is staged, not an overnight disappearance. Abel has formal authority while Buffett’s experience and reputation remain available as a resource.

How much influence does Buffett still have?

Buffett’s continuing influence has two measurable dimensions: governance and ownership.

He remains a director

Chairman emeritus is consistent with a reduced operating role, but Buffett has not left Berkshire’s board. He can therefore remain part of formal governance even though Abel runs the company.

His voting power exceeds his economic stake

Berkshire’s 2026 proxy reported that Buffett held approximately 30.0% of the voting interest and 13.7% of the economic interest at the time of filing. The difference reflects Berkshire’s share-class structure: his ability to influence votes was substantially larger than his proportionate claim on the company’s economics.

The ownership connection is designed to diminish

A July 2026 release said Buffett intended to donate all remaining shares to four foundations by December 31, 2034. The statement is an intention, not a promise that every transfer will occur on that exact schedule; it is expressly subject to mortality uncertainty. As those donations occur, Berkshire should become less directly owned by Buffett even while the Buffett name remains central to its culture.

What does Buffett’s performance record mean for the Abel era?

Investors care about succession because Buffett’s historical results set an exceptionally high benchmark. The Associated Press reported that Berkshire compounded at 19.9% annually during Buffett’s tenure, compared with 10.4% for the S&P 500.

That statistic explains the intensity of the transition debate, but it is historical context rather than a forecast. Abel does not inherit a guaranteed return rate, and Berkshire’s future results will depend on operating performance, insurance conditions, acquisition prices, investment opportunities and capital-allocation decisions that have not yet been made.

What should investors watch after the leadership change?

The most useful way to judge the post-Buffett Berkshire is to watch the institution rather than search for a replacement personality.

  • Capital allocation: whether Abel deploys Berkshire’s cash through acquisitions, investments, buybacks or balance-sheet protection with the discipline shareholders expect.
  • Insurance underwriting: whether the insurance businesses maintain the risk controls that support Berkshire’s financial flexibility.
  • Decentralized management: whether operating managers retain autonomy while the parent company exercises appropriate oversight.
  • Board effectiveness: whether Howard Buffett’s chairmanship provides meaningful cultural and governance scrutiny without interfering with management.
  • Communication quality: whether shareholder reports explain decisions clearly enough to replace the information role Buffett personally filled.

The central test is continuity of standards without dependence on one individual. If Berkshire can preserve its discipline while Abel makes decisions on his own record, it will have completed a genuine institutional succession.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “chairman emeritus” mean for Warren Buffett at Berkshire?

It marks Buffett as a former chair with an honorary status rather than the company’s operating leader. Berkshire’s September 18, 2026 announcement also said he would remain a director, so he still has a formal governance role.

Are Warren Buffett’s Berkshire shares already donated?

No. The July 2026 statement described an intention to donate all remaining shares to four foundations by December 31, 2034, and noted that mortality uncertainty could affect the timing. The 2026 proxy therefore still recorded substantial voting and economic interests for Buffett.

Can Greg Abel simply copy Warren Buffett’s investment strategy?

Abel inherits Berkshire’s businesses, financial resources and decision-making culture, but no successor can reproduce another person’s exact opportunities or judgment. Buffett’s 19.9% historical compound rate is a record of the past, not a target Berkshire has promised to match.

Why separate Berkshire’s CEO and board-chair jobs?

Separating them lets the CEO concentrate on operations while the board evaluates management and protects the company’s principles. Berkshire is using Howard Buffett’s chairmanship to provide that cultural oversight without placing him in the CEO role.
