Why a Raise May Not Increase Your Take-Home Pay as Much as Expected

A raise almost always increases your gross pay, but your bank deposit rises by less because payroll withholds federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare taxes, and possibly state, local, benefit, or retirement deductions. A smaller increase in one paycheck does not mean the raise reduced your annual after-tax income.

The key is to separate your eventual tax liability from paycheck withholding. Your tax return calculates what you actually owed for the full year; each paycheck is only an estimate and prepayment. Compare equivalent pay stubs, identify which deductions changed, and use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for a current federal estimate.

Why did my paycheck go down after a raise?

  • Federal income-tax withholding rises. Payroll recalculates withholding from the larger paycheck using your Form W-4 information, filing status, credits, deductions, and other income reported through the form.
  • FICA withholding rises. Social Security and Medicare are separate payroll taxes. They generally increase when covered wages increase.
  • A pay-period adjustment changes the comparison. The first check after a raise might cover only part of a pay period, include retroactive pay, or contain a commission or bonus.
  • Other deductions change. Retirement contributions, health insurance, flexible-spending accounts, and other employer-plan deductions may be calculated as a percentage of pay or may change during an enrollment period.
  • State or local withholding changes. Federal guidance cannot determine your state or city tax treatment.

Look at the entire pay stub rather than only the net-pay line. A higher gross wage with higher taxes or benefits deductions can produce a deposit that feels unexpectedly small, while still leaving you better off over the year.

Does a raise put me in a higher tax bracket?

Moving into a higher federal marginal bracket does not make all of your income subject to that higher rate. Only the taxable dollars inside the new bracket are taxed at that rate; earlier dollars remain taxed in lower brackets. Your effective rate—the total tax divided by the relevant income measure—will usually be lower than your highest marginal rate.

For tax year 2026, the Internal Revenue Service lists federal marginal rates from 10% through 37%. Bracket thresholds vary by filing status. For example, the 22% bracket begins above $50,400 of taxable income for a single filer and above $100,800 for married filing jointly. Those are taxable-income thresholds, not salary cutoffs: deductions, adjustments, and credits affect the amount that reaches the brackets.

Concept What it means What it does not mean
Marginal tax rate The rate applied to the next dollar of taxable income within the applicable bracket. It does not apply to every dollar you earn.
Effective tax rate Total federal income tax divided by the income measure used in the calculation. It is not the same as your highest bracket.
Paycheck withholding An employer’s periodic estimate and prepayment based on payroll data and Form W-4 entries. It is not your final annual tax bill.

Therefore, “my raise was taxed at 22%” can be misleading. Some of the increase may fall in a lower bracket, and Social Security, Medicare, state taxes, and deductions are separate from federal income-tax brackets.

Withholding is not the same as your final tax liability

Employers withhold federal income tax throughout the year. When you file a return, the IRS compares your actual annual liability with withholding and other payments. If too much was withheld, the excess generally becomes a refund; if too little was withheld, you may owe the difference. A paycheck that withholds more after a raise is not proof that the raise caused a tax loss.

Your Form W-4 supplies information used for federal withholding. Filing status, multiple jobs, a working spouse, dependents, credits, deductions, and other household income can materially change the result. A W-4 adjustment changes federal income-tax withholding; it does not directly change ordinary Social Security or Medicare withholding. The IRS estimator FAQ puts it this way: “Forms W-4 and W-4P do not address Social Security or Medicare taxes, known as FICA, which are fixed percentages taken out of your pay.”

Why withholding can change more than expected

  • Your employer annualizes the larger per-pay-period wage when calculating withholding.
  • A W-4 entry may no longer match your household’s income or credit situation.
  • A raise may be combined with a one-time payment, making that check look unlike a normal salary check.
  • Payroll may have corrected an earlier under-withholding or applied a new payroll-year table.

Withholding tables are designed to approximate annual tax, not to predict the exact amount on your return. Use the full year’s figures when judging whether your withholding is reasonable.

How Social Security and Medicare affect the increase

FICA taxes are separate from federal income tax. For 2026, the employee Social Security rate is 6.2% on covered wages up to the $184,500 annual wage base. Once your year-to-date wages exceed that base, additional wages are no longer subject to the employee Social Security tax for that year. Medicare tax is 1.45% on all covered wages, with no wage-base limit.

Payroll tax Employee treatment in 2026 What happens after a threshold
Social Security 6.2% of covered wages, up to $184,500 for the year. Employee Social Security withholding stops after year-to-date wages pass the wage base.
Medicare 1.45% of all covered wages. There is no ordinary wage-base limit.
Additional Medicare withholding An extra 0.9% withheld by the employer after it pays you more than $200,000 in the calendar year. The employer trigger does not vary with filing status; final Additional Medicare Tax liability uses filing-status thresholds.

If your raise takes effect before you reach the Social Security wage base, the increase generally produces additional Social Security withholding. If you pass the wage base later in the year, the same salary may produce a larger net check afterward because Social Security withholding stops. Medicare continues, and the additional 0.9% may begin when the employer’s $200,000 payment trigger is crossed.

Why is my raise taxed so much on one paycheck?

Partial-period or retroactive pay

Payroll may pay the new salary for only part of a pay period, then add a retroactive adjustment for the days covered by the raise. The gross amount and withholding can look unusual compared with a normal check. Confirm the effective date and the number of days or hours paid at each rate.

Bonus, commission, or other variable pay

Bonuses and commissions are subject to withholding, but the method used for that payment can differ from the calculation used for regular wages. The IRS treats bonuses, commissions, regular pay, and other listed forms of compensation as wages subject to withholding. A different withholding amount on a bonus does not create a separate final tax system: your return considers total annual income, deductions, and credits.

Do not assume one universal bonus-withholding percentage applies in every case. Ask payroll which method it used and compare the year-to-date totals, rather than judging your annual tax from one unusual deposit.

Benefit and retirement deductions

Inspect lines for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement-plan contributions, health savings accounts, flexible-spending accounts, garnishments, and other deductions. Some are pretax, some are after-tax, and some are fixed while others are percentage-based. The applicable treatment depends on your employer’s plan and your election. Payroll should explain a new or changed line.

Pay frequency or annualization differences

Check whether the raise was quoted as an annual salary while the stub shows a biweekly, semimonthly, weekly, or hourly amount. A calendar can contain an extra pay period under some schedules. Compare checks covering the same number of days and the same type of earnings.

How much of my raise will I take home?

No universal percentage applies. The result depends on filing status, taxable income, pay frequency, state and local taxes, FICA status, benefits, retirement elections, and credits. You can make a useful estimate by isolating the incremental deductions:

  1. Convert the annual raise into the amount per pay period. Divide by the number of regular pay periods, and separately identify any bonus or retroactive amount.
  2. Estimate federal income-tax withholding using accurate current-year income and Form W-4 information in the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
  3. Apply the applicable FICA rates to the additional covered wages, remembering the $184,500 Social Security wage base and the continuing Medicare tax.
  4. Review state and local withholding through the relevant revenue or labor authority; the federal estimator does not calculate those taxes.
  5. Add or subtract changed benefit and retirement deductions shown on the actual stub.
  6. Compare the resulting net increase with a normal pre-raise check, not with a bonus or a partial-period check.

For example, an employee who is still below the Social Security wage base generally sees both the 6.2% employee Social Security tax and 1.45% Medicare tax applied to additional covered wages, before federal, state, local, and benefit deductions. That illustrates why the deposit is less than the gross raise; it is not a prediction of any individual’s net amount.

  • State and local withholding.
  • Retirement, insurance, health-account, flexible-spending, garnishment, and other deductions.
  • Number of pay periods and the pay-period dates.

If gross pay rose but a deduction line changed by more than expected, ask payroll for the plan rule or correction that produced it. Keep copies of both stubs and record the year-to-date totals.

What to do if federal withholding looks wrong

  1. Gather your latest pay stub, year-to-date federal withholding, spouse’s or other household income, expected bonuses, and relevant deduction or credit information.
  2. Open the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. The IRS describes it as a free tool that helps workers and retirees estimate federal income tax to withhold now for taxes owed next year. As of the IRS March 12, 2026 description, it does not require a login or personally identifiable information.
  3. Enter current-year income and withholding carefully. Inaccurate inputs, unusual compensation, or circumstances outside the estimator’s coverage can make its result inaccurate.
  4. Review the suggested adjustment. If appropriate, submit a new Form W-4 to your employer; changing the W-4 changes federal income-tax withholding, not ordinary FICA rates.
  5. Recheck a later normal pay stub to confirm that the requested change took effect.

The estimator is a federal withholding tool. It excludes state and local taxes, and its W-4 calculation does not replace the fixed Social Security and Medicare payroll-tax rules. For those items, use the applicable state or local authority and your employer’s payroll explanation.

Could a raise affect benefits?

Some income-tested programs use household income, assets, filing status, or local rules. A raise may affect eligibility or the amount for a particular program, but the outcome cannot be determined from federal payroll withholding alone. Thresholds and calculations differ by program and jurisdiction. Check the authoritative agency for the specific benefit rather than assuming that every raise reduces benefits or that none do.

When the deposit is lower than the previous one

A genuinely lower net deposit can result from a payroll correction, a new insurance election, a higher retirement contribution, an additional Medicare withholding trigger, state or local changes, or a check that contains fewer paid hours. First verify gross wages and the pay-period dates. Then trace every changed deduction and year-to-date threshold. If payroll cannot explain a changed line, request a written breakdown and retain the stubs for your records.
