Audi cars are made by AUDI AG, the German automaker headquartered in Ingolstadt. AUDI AG is wholly owned by Volkswagen AG, the parent company of the Volkswagen Group.
However, “German brand” does not mean every Audi is built in Germany. Audi uses its own factories, other Volkswagen Group plants and manufacturing joint ventures in Europe, North America, South America, India and China. The exact assembly location depends on the model, body style, market and production year—details that can matter when comparing prices, researching a used Audi or checking a vehicle’s history.
Who owns and manufactures Audi?
Audi is manufactured by AUDI AG. The company operates Audi plants in Germany and several other countries, while selected vehicles are assembled at Volkswagen Group factories or through local joint ventures.
AUDI AG is part of Volkswagen AG, which also owns or controls brands including Volkswagen, Škoda, SEAT/CUPRA, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini. That group structure explains why an Audi may be built at a facility that also produces vehicles for other Volkswagen Group brands.

For buyers, the important distinction is this: the Audi badge identifies the brand, but the factory responsible for assembly can vary significantly.

Audi production in Germany
Ingolstadt
Ingolstadt is Audi’s headquarters and one of its main production locations. The plant currently builds the A3, Q3, A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Audi also says production of the A2 e-tron is scheduled to start there in 2026.
Neckarsulm
Neckarsulm produces several higher-end Audi lines, including the A5, A6, A8 and e-tron GT. The site is also associated with Audi’s more specialized and performance-oriented manufacturing operations.
Zwickau
The Q4 e-tron is built at Zwickau. Unlike Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, this is part of Volkswagen Sachsen’s wider electric-vehicle manufacturing network. The plant is therefore an example of Audi using shared Group manufacturing capacity rather than relying only on Audi-branded factories.
Where Audi SUVs and other models are built overseas
Hungary: Győr
Audi’s Győr operation builds the Q3, Q3 Sportback and their e-hybrid versions. It also produces Audi and Volkswagen Group engines, electric drives and other components. As a result, Győr is more than an assembly plant: it is an important powertrain and component location for the Group.
Slovakia: Bratislava
The Q7 and Q8 are built at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant. The site produces vehicles for four Volkswagen Group brands, so an Audi assembled there shares a broader manufacturing environment with other Group products.
Mexico: San José Chiapa
Audi’s Mexican plant at San José Chiapa produces the Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback. Older descriptions sometimes refer to the location only in connection with Q5 production, but Audi’s current plant information lists both body styles.
Brazil: São José dos Pinhais
The facility near Curitiba builds the Q3 and Q3 Sportback for the Brazilian market. Local production can affect which versions, engines and equipment are offered compared with vehicles imported from Europe or elsewhere.

India: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
At the Škoda Auto Volkswagen India factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Audi models built for the Indian market include the Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, A4 Sedan and A6 Sedan. The site was formerly referred to as Aurangabad, so both names may appear in older vehicle information or automotive coverage.
Audi factories and joint ventures in China
Audi manufactures vehicles in China through joint ventures with FAW and SAIC. Audi currently identifies seven production sites at six Chinese locations: Changchun, Foshan, Tianjin, Qingdao, Anting in Shanghai and Ningbo.

The China-only AUDI E5 Sportback is also produced in Anting by SAIC. Its uppercase “AUDI” branding is intentional. It belongs to a separate sister-brand initiative created by Audi and SAIC for the Chinese market, and should not be confused with the standard four-ring Audi brand sold globally.
What does the manufacturing location mean for a buyer?
The country where an Audi is assembled is useful information, but it should not be treated as a simple quality ranking. Audi applies its manufacturing standards across its production network, while the individual vehicle’s specifications depend on its model generation, equipment, engine, market and production date.
Manufacturing location can still matter financially in several practical ways:
- Pricing: imported vehicles can be affected by shipping costs, taxes, tariffs and exchange rates.
- Equipment: a model sold in one market may have different engines, safety equipment or trim levels from the same-named model sold elsewhere.
- Parts and servicing: most routine service is handled through the local dealer network, but unusual components may have different ordering or availability considerations.
- Resale research: knowing the exact model and specification helps prevent comparisons between vehicles that share a name but were built for different markets.
- Vehicle history: the build location can help confirm whether a listing’s description matches the vehicle’s documentation.
How to check where a specific Audi was built
A plant’s model list is a useful starting point, but it cannot identify the factory for every individual car. Production can change with a new generation, body style, market allocation or production year.
- Identify the car’s exact model, body style and model year. “Q5,” for example, is not enough if different generations or Sportback versions are involved.
- Check the vehicle identification number (VIN), build sheet or manufacturer documentation supplied with the car.
- Ask an Audi dealer to confirm the vehicle’s production information using the VIN.
- For a used-car purchase, compare the documentation with the registration record, import paperwork and service history.
- Do not assume that a vehicle’s destination market is the same as its assembly country. An Audi can be built in one country and exported to another.
These checks are more reliable than relying on a general statement such as “Audi cars are made in Germany.”
Is every Audi made in Germany?
No. Audi’s principal German sites are Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm and Zwickau, but current production also takes place in Hungary, Slovakia, Mexico, Brazil, India and China.

It is also important to avoid outdated plant lists. Audi discontinued vehicle production at its Brussels site during the first quarter of 2025, so Brussels should not be presented as a current Audi production location.

Not by itself. Reliability is influenced by the specific engine, transmission, electrical systems, model generation, maintenance history and how the vehicle was used. Assembly country alone is not a dependable way to predict repair costs or long-term ownership expenses.
For a purchase decision, focus on the exact vehicle’s service records, warranty coverage, recall history, inspection results and expected maintenance costs. Factory location is useful context, not a substitute for those checks.
