Superannuation pension starts when the member retires at age 58; qualifying members who leave employment before 58 may seek an early pension. For a new entrant, the statutory formula is monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70. The result is not determined by your last salary alone: EPS service records, salary ceilings, the 1 September 2014 transition, and any higher-wage provisions can change the calculation.
What EPS pension covers
The Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), administered by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), provides several types of benefits. The member-retirement formula answers only the ordinary member pension question. Disability pension and survivor benefits for a spouse, children, or other eligible family members have separate eligibility and calculation rules.

| Benefit or case | Main age or event condition | Service requirement | How to treat the calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superannuation pension | Retirement on attaining age 58 | At least 10 years of eligible service | Use the applicable member-pension provisions and records. |
| Early pension | Retirement or other cessation of employment before age 58 | At least 10 years of eligible service | Eligibility exists under the scheme, but the amount depends on the provisions applicable to the member’s dates and records. |
| Disability pension | Qualifying disability under EPS rules | Separate scheme conditions | Do not apply the ordinary member formula without checking the disability provisions. |
| Survivor and family benefits | Death of a member or pensioner and qualifying family relationship | Separate scheme conditions | Spouse, child, and other family entitlements are governed by their own EPS rules. |
Who qualifies for the ordinary member pension?
The 10-year service threshold
The central threshold is 10 years of eligible service. A member with at least 10 years can qualify for a superannuation pension on retiring at 58. The same 10-year threshold applies to the scheme’s early-pension route when the member retires or otherwise ceases employment before reaching 58.
Service is not simply the number of years shown on an appointment letter. EPS ties pensionable service to contributions received or receivable for the member. Missing contribution periods, unrecorded employment, transfers between establishments, and incorrect dates can therefore affect the credited service used in a calculation.

Age determines the pension route
- At age 58: a member meeting the 10-year service condition falls under superannuation pension provisions.
- Before age 58: a member meeting the same service condition may qualify for early pension after retirement or another cessation of employment.
- Family or disability claims: age and service tests differ; the ordinary member-pension formula is not a substitute for those provisions.
The scheme text states: “A member shall be entitled to: – (a) superannuation pension if he has rendered eligible service of 10 years or more and retires on attaining the age of 58 years; (b) early pension, if he has rendered eligible service of 10 years or more and retires or otherwise ceases to be in the employment before attaining the age of 58 years.”
The standard EPS pension formula
For a new entrant, EPS states:
Monthly member’s pension = Pensionable salary × Pensionable service ÷ 70
Each input has a specific meaning:
- Pensionable salary is the scheme-defined average monthly pay over the relevant contributory period, subject to the wage ceilings and special provisions that apply to the member.
- Pensionable service is the service credited by reference to EPS contributions, including the scheme’s rounding rules and any applicable weightage.
- 70 is the divisor written into the statutory formula; it is not a rate selected by the employer or member.
The formula is a legal calculation framework, not a promise that multiplying a current salary by years worked will produce the final pension. Existing-member provisions, past-service benefits, higher-wage eligibility, and the date pension begins can all change which calculation applies.

Illustrative arithmetic
Suppose the applicable pensionable salary were ₹15,000 and the credited pensionable service were 20 years. Applying the basic formula alone gives ₹15,000 × 20 ÷ 70, or about ₹4,286 per month. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not an entitlement quote. A member’s actual salary average, ceiling treatment, service credit, weightage, and historical provisions must be confirmed from EPFO records.
How pensionable service is credited
Contribution-based service
EPS defines pensionable service by reference to contributions received or receivable for the member. Your service record should therefore be checked alongside the contribution history rather than relying only on total employment tenure.
Rounding partial years
Under the current scheme text, a service period of less than six months is ignored for this purpose, while a period of six months or more is rounded to a full year. For example, a credited period of 12 years and five months is treated differently from 12 years and six months under that rule. The precise periods used are those established in the EPS record, not an estimate based on calendar dates alone.

Two-year weightage at superannuation
For a member who superannuates at age 58 and has at least 20 years of pensionable service, the scheme text provides an additional two years as weightage. This is a specific superannuation rule. It should not be added automatically to an early-pension claim or to every service total.

How pensionable salary is determined
It is not automatically your last drawn salary
EPS uses a scheme-defined average of contributory-period pay. Consequently, a final month’s basic wage, total take-home pay, or current gross salary is not automatically the pensionable salary. The relevant average window and the ceiling applied to that window depend on the dates and provisions governing the member.
The ordinary 60-month average
The current EPS text describes pensionable salary as an average of pay over 60 months. The calculation also addresses non-contributory periods and partial months, so an uninterrupted 60-month sequence of identical wages is not the only possible record. EPFO’s actual service and contribution data determine which months and amounts enter the average.

Why the 1 September 2014 transition matters
The salary ceiling is not one universal figure for every month of service. The current scheme text applies the earlier ₹6,500-per-month ceiling to service up to 1 September 2014 on a pro-rata basis and specifies a ₹15,000-per-month ceiling for the period after that date. The transition means a member with service spanning the date may have two different salary-ceiling treatments inside one pension calculation.
| Service period | Ceiling described in the current EPS text | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 September 2014 | ₹6,500 per month, applied on a pro-rata basis | Earlier months are not automatically recalculated using the later ₹15,000 ceiling. |
| After 1 September 2014 | ₹15,000 per month | Later months are treated under the post-transition ceiling, subject to the applicable provisions. |
Because the average is built from the relevant contributory periods, applying ₹15,000 to every month of a long career can overstate the result when earlier service is included. The transition must be handled month by month or by the scheme’s prescribed pro-rata method.
Higher-wage pension cases require separate checking
Members who contributed or seek pension based on wages above the ordinary ceiling cannot assume that the basic new-entrant calculation settles the issue. Eligibility, contribution adjustments, effective dates, and the applicable salary average are governed by additional provisions and EPFO guidance.

Pension commencement date changes the cited averaging period
EPFO’s December 2023 circular distinguishes specified higher-wage cases by the date pension commenced:
- Where pension commenced before 1 September 2014, the cited eligible cases use the 12 months preceding exit.
- Where pension commenced on or after 1 September 2014, the cited eligible cases use the 60 months preceding exit.
These are case-specific official instructions, not a replacement for checking the member’s own dates. They should not be presented as a universal rule for every higher-wage applicant or every EPS pension.
Why a higher-wage application may change the result
- The member may need to establish that the higher-wage option and contribution conditions were satisfied.
- Additional dues or contribution differences may be calculated for the relevant period.
- The salary average can depend on whether pension commenced before or after the transition date.
- EPFO records, employer filings, and the member’s election or application history can control the outcome.
Do not treat an online higher-wage figure as an approval or final pension order. It is an estimate until the competent EPFO office verifies the underlying records.

How to check your own EPS eligibility and amount
- Collect your Universal Account Number and member IDs. Multiple employments may appear under different member accounts, so gather every period that should be linked to your pension service.
- Review the EPFO service history. Check each employer’s joining date, exit date, transfer entry, and whether any period is missing or duplicated.
- Compare the contribution record with employment documents. Look for months in which EPS contributions were absent, reported under the wrong wage, or not transferred after a job change.
- Identify the pension route. Decide whether the claim concerns superannuation at 58, early pension before 58, disability, or a family benefit. Do not mix the rules for these categories.
- Apply the correct salary period and ceiling. Determine whether service crosses 1 September 2014 and whether the ordinary ceiling or a documented higher-wage provision applies.
- Calculate only as an estimate. Use the statutory formula with the pensionable salary and service supported by your records. Keep the result labelled as an estimate until EPFO confirms it.
- Ask the Regional Office to resolve discrepancies. EPFO states that its higher-wage dues calculator provides a ballpark estimate and that the Regional Office calculation based on records is authentic.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong estimate
- Using last salary instead of pensionable salary: EPS generally relies on an applicable contributory-period average, not simply the final payslip.
- Applying ₹15,000 to all historical service: the pre-1 September 2014 period has the ₹6,500 ceiling treatment described in the current text.
- Counting every employment month automatically: pensionable service follows contribution records and the scheme’s rounding rules.
- Adding two years to every claim: the two-year weightage is tied to superannuation at 58 with at least 20 years of pensionable service.
- Using the member formula for a survivor or disability claim: those benefits have separate EPS provisions.
- Treating a calculator result as final: an online higher-wage result is expressly a ballpark estimate pending record-based verification.
- Ignoring pension commencement date: the cited higher-wage guidance uses different averaging examples before and from 1 September 2014.
What the formula can—and cannot—tell you
The formula gives a transparent starting point once the legally correct salary and service inputs are known. It can show how a change in credited service or pensionable salary affects the arithmetic, and it explains why two members with different contribution histories may receive different amounts.
It cannot, by itself, decide whether a member has 10 years of eligible service, establish a missing contribution period, select the correct historical ceiling, approve a higher-wage option, or determine a family or disability benefit. Those questions require the member’s EPFO records and the provisions applicable to the relevant dates.
Bottom line for EPS members
For ordinary member pension, start with the 10-year eligible-service threshold and the age of 58 for superannuation. Then apply the statutory formula—pensionable salary multiplied by pensionable service, divided by 70—using the scheme-defined salary average, contribution-based service, rounding rules, and any applicable weightage. If service crosses 1 September 2014 or involves wages above the standard ceiling, treat the case as date-sensitive and obtain a record-based EPFO determination rather than relying on a simplified online estimate.
