Chime grew quickly but reported a large GAAP net loss, so it is not profitable on that measure. Revolut reported strong profit growth for its global group, but that does not establish that its U.S. business is profitable.
The useful answer is not a single league table. These companies use different structures, report different geographies, and earn money in different ways. To judge a digital bank in 2026, separate GAAP earnings from revenue growth and adjusted metrics, identify the actual deposit-taking bank, and read the revenue mix and cost risks behind the headline numbers.

What counts as a profitable neobank?
Profitability means the company produces positive earnings after expenses under the accounting measure being discussed. For a public company, the most comparable starting points are GAAP net income or loss and diluted earnings per share (EPS). Revenue growth, active-customer growth, contribution profit, adjusted EBITDA and other management-defined measures can explain operating momentum, but none substitutes for a GAAP profit.
That distinction matters because a payments-led fintech can add customers and revenue while spending heavily on marketing, technology, compliance, credit losses and public-company costs. A lending-heavy company can report strong revenue while provisions for loan losses or funding costs reduce earnings. A global group can be profitable even when a newly built U.S. operation is still investing.
#1 Best Overall
The figures below come from fiscal 2025 company reports available in 2026, except where a source specifically describes a different period. They are not a census of every U.S. neobank and should not be treated as a permanent ranking.

SoFi: positive EPS from a diversified model
SoFi’s 2025 filing is the strongest direct profitability evidence among these examples because it reports positive diluted EPS, not merely an adjusted operating measure. The company generated $3.6 billion in total net revenue, a 35% annual increase, while fee-based revenue reached $1.5 billion, up 59%.
Those results cover three broad activities rather than one narrow checking-account business:
- Lending: interest and fees tied to originating, servicing or otherwise supporting loans.
- Financial services: account, payment and investment-related activity that can create recurring or transaction-based fees.
- Technology platform: services sold to other financial institutions and businesses.
The mix matters for durability. Lending can produce substantial revenue but is sensitive to credit performance, demand, funding costs and the volume of loans originated or sold. Fee-based services and technology contracts may diversify income, yet they face competition, client concentration and implementation costs. SoFi’s filing itself warns that future profitability depends on lending volumes, product activity, technology-platform clients, competition and economic conditions.
Calling SoFi a profitable neobank without qualification would therefore be misleading in two ways. First, the evidence is for a broader financial-services company, not a stand-alone deposit app. Second, one profitable fiscal year does not guarantee that earnings will persist through a credit cycle or a change in funding markets. The useful conclusion is narrower: SoFi demonstrated positive fiscal-2025 diluted EPS while expanding revenue, and its diversified businesses provide more than one potential source of earnings.

Chime: rapid growth, payments economics and a large loss
Chime’s 2025 Form 10-K describes a financial-technology company that provides services through The Bancorp Bank and Stride Bank. Chime itself should not be described as the deposit-taking bank. The partner banks are the institutions that provide the banking services and FDIC-insured deposits described in the filing.

Chime states that it “primarily generate[s] revenue when members spend using a Chime-branded debit or credit card, based on fees paid via the card networks, rather than fees paid to us by our members.” In practical terms, card usage creates network-funded revenue, while direct-deposit relationships can support products that provide access to liquidity and encourage more frequent account use.
For fiscal 2025, Chime reported $2.187 billion in revenue, up 31%. Payments revenue was $1.501 billion and platform-related revenue was $686.2 million. It reported 9.5 million active members at December 31, 2025. Those are substantial scale and engagement indicators, but the same filing reported a $1.010 billion GAAP net loss.
The loss changes how the growth should be interpreted. More members and card transactions can improve operating leverage over time, but they also require customer support, fraud controls, regulatory compliance, product development and marketing. A payments-heavy company is exposed to transaction volumes, interchange economics, network rules and the cost of serving accounts. Platform-related revenue can diversify the mix, but it does not by itself prove that the core consumer operation is profitable.
Chime describes its broader purpose as delivering products for “spending, saving, accessing liquidity, and building credit” through direct relationships with FDIC-insured bank partners. That is a company statement, not independent proof that each product line is profitable. The 2025 net loss is the essential qualification whenever Chime’s growth is discussed.

Revolut is useful as a comparator because its reported scale and earnings illustrate why geography must be attached to every statistic. Its 2025 annual report says group profit-before-tax grew 57% year over year. It also reports more than 80 million retail customers worldwide, $67.5 billion in total balances and a 45% increase in retail customers choosing Revolut as their primary account.
Rank #3
These are global group figures, not U.S.-segment results. The report uses GBP as its reporting currency and presents dollar amounts as illustrative conversions. A global group can earn profits in established markets while investing in licensing, compliance, hiring and product development for a newer market. Consequently, Revolut’s results do not establish that its U.S. business is profitable.
The company says it received a UK banking licence and applied for a U.S. banking charter in 2026. An application is not approval, and a charter’s status can change after the date of the report. Readers evaluating U.S. deposits should verify the current legal entity, charter and deposit-insurance arrangement rather than infer them from worldwide customer totals.
How digital banking businesses make money
The three cases show several monetization channels. The channel mix is often more informative than the app’s customer count.

When a customer uses a branded debit or credit card, the merchant’s payment economics can send a fee through the card network to the issuing side. Chime says this is its primary revenue engine. The model benefits from active spending and direct-deposit relationships, but it depends on transaction frequency, network rules and the cost of fraud prevention and support.
Lending income and credit performance
Lenders earn interest and fees, but they also absorb funding costs, servicing costs and expected credit losses. SoFi identifies lending as one of its major businesses. A period of high originations can lift revenue while weakening underwriting or rising delinquencies later reduce earnings. Any profitability analysis should therefore examine provisions and credit trends, not just loan growth.
Fee-based financial services
Account, payment, investment and other financial-services activity can add fees that are less dependent on a single loan portfolio. SoFi’s filing reports fee-based revenue separately, making the growth of that stream visible. Fees still carry costs for technology, compliance, customer acquisition and service delivery.
Rank #4
Technology-platform revenue
A fintech may sell infrastructure or processing capabilities to other institutions. SoFi includes a technology platform in its business description, while Chime reports platform-related revenue. Platform contracts can diversify consumer revenue, but they bring competition, implementation obligations and dependence on business clients.
Bank charter versus fintech brand: why the distinction matters
A banking app’s brand is not always the legal institution holding deposits. In a partner-bank model, the fintech designs the interface and products while a chartered bank provides deposit accounts and regulated banking services. The arrangement can give consumers access to FDIC insurance through the partner bank, subject to the insurance rules and account ownership structure, but it also creates dependence on that partner’s systems and oversight.
An institution with its own charter faces a different cost and compliance structure, including capital, liquidity, supervision and examinations. A charter can improve control over products and deposits, yet it does not guarantee profits. For any provider, check the account agreement and disclosures for the actual bank, insurance status, and limits before treating the app as a bank.
A practical framework for judging profitability
Use the following sequence when a company announces fast growth or a new “profit” metric:
- Identify the period and geography. Label the result as fiscal 2025, a 2026 quarter, a U.S. entity or a global group. Do not combine them in one ranking.
- Start with GAAP net income or loss and diluted EPS. Record the exact measure and whether it is attributable to the company or a segment.
- Separate operating metrics. Put revenue growth, active members, balances, contribution profit and adjusted EBITDA in a separate column from GAAP earnings.
- Map the revenue sources. Determine how much comes from card payments, lending, financial-services fees and platform activity. A concentration in one stream increases sensitivity to that stream’s rules and market conditions.
- Check the cost structure. Look for credit losses, funding costs, customer acquisition, support, fraud, technology, compliance and partner-bank expenses.
- Verify the legal provider. Confirm whether the company is a bank, a bank holding company, a fintech using partner banks or a global group operating through multiple entities.
- Test durability. Read management’s stated risks and ask whether earnings depend on unusually strong lending demand, transaction growth, low losses or one large platform client.
This approach prevents a common error: treating the largest customer base or fastest revenue growth as the winner before examining what each dollar of revenue costs to produce.

What the wider U.S. banking data says
The Federal Reserve’s December 2025 supervision report provides context, not a neobank scorecard. It said more than 99% of U.S. banks were well-capitalized in 2025’s second quarter. Aggregate commercial-bank deposits reached $18.3 trillion in August 2025. For the first half of 2025, the system recorded approximately 1% return on average assets and 10.5% return on equity.

Those figures cover the banking system as a whole, including institutions with very different charters, balance sheets and business models. They cannot be used to infer that a particular digital bank is profitable. They do show the environment in which digital providers compete: deposits are a major funding base, capital and liquidity matter, and returns must be judged against the risks and requirements of regulated banking.

What to watch in 2026
Whether profits survive changing credit conditions
For lending-oriented companies, monitor delinquency, charge-offs, provisions and funding costs alongside originations. Revenue growth without stable credit performance can reverse quickly.
Whether payments growth converts into earnings
For payments-led providers, watch active usage, transaction economics and operating expenses. Member growth is valuable only if each account can be served at a sustainable cost.
Whether diversification is real
Platform and fee-based businesses can reduce reliance on lending or interchange, but investors should look for disclosed revenue and earnings contribution rather than assuming product breadth creates cross-selling automatically.
Whether regulatory structures change
Partner-bank relationships, charter applications and licensing decisions can alter who holds deposits, which entity bears compliance duties and how products are offered. Recheck the latest filing and account disclosures before relying on an older description.
The bottom line on profitable U.S. neobanks
On the latest disclosed figures, SoFi is the clearest profitable U.S.-focused example, with positive fiscal-2025 diluted EPS and strong growth across a diversified financial-services platform. Chime is a large, fast-growing fintech whose 2025 revenue and membership gains came with a $1.010 billion GAAP net loss; its partner banks, not Chime itself, provide the banking services described in its filing. Revolut’s 57% global profit-before-tax growth is notable, but it cannot answer whether Revolut’s U.S. operation is profitable.

The durable lesson is methodological: compare like periods and geographies, use GAAP earnings first, trace each revenue stream to its costs, and verify the legal bank behind the app. That is more informative than ranking digital providers by downloads, customer counts or headline growth.
