Yes, but not every family. The Social Security Administration’s estimated January 2027 averages exceed $3,000 for a widowed mother with two children, a disabled worker with a spouse and at least one child, and an aged couple in which both people receive benefits. These are category averages, not guaranteed checks for individual households.

Widowed mother with two children
This is the highest listed family average, at $4,074 for January 2027. The category combines survivor benefits payable on a deceased worker’s record for a mother and two eligible children. Actual payments depend on the worker’s earnings record and whether each family member remains eligible.
#1 Best Overall
Disabled worker with a spouse and children
SSA estimates $3,077 for a disabled worker with a spouse and one or more children. The estimate is an average for the entire category; it is not the amount produced automatically whenever a household has those relationships.
Aged couple with two beneficiaries
An aged couple in which both people receive benefits has an estimated average of $3,355. This category exceeds $3,000 even though it is not a survivor or disabled-worker family.

Aged widow(er) receiving benefits alone
The estimated average for an aged widow(er) alone is $2,005, so that category does not cross the $3,000 threshold. A surviving spouse with eligible children can fall into a different, higher-paying category because more than one person may be paid on the deceased worker’s record.
Why an individual family may receive more or less
SSA’s averages do not replace an individual benefit calculation. The amount on a particular record varies with the worker’s earnings history, the primary insurance amount, the number of eligible relatives and each person’s eligibility status.
Rank #3
Family payments can also be limited by the statutory family maximum. SSA defines it as “the maximum monthly amount that can be paid on a worker’s earnings record.” It limits the total payable on that record, so family members’ individual estimates should not simply be added together.
For 2027, the retirement and survivor family-maximum bend points are $1,712, $2,471 and $3,223. SSA applies the specified percentages to portions of the worker’s primary insurance amount and then caps the combined family benefit under that formula. The bend points are calculation thresholds, not extra payments or guaranteed minimums.
Rank #4
- A change in the number of eligible children can change the family total.
- A child’s age, disability status or other eligibility condition can affect whether benefits continue.
- The worker’s earnings record determines the underlying benefit from which family payments are calculated.
When the 2027 increase appears
The 3.6% COLA applies to Social Security benefits payable in January 2027. Most beneficiaries can see their individualized COLA notice in the Message Center of a my Social Security account in late November 2026.
SSA calculated the adjustment from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The third-quarter 2026 average was 328.746, compared with a 2025 base average of 317.265; the resulting increase rounds to 3.6%.

Social Security and SSI follow different payment dates
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients also receive the 3.6% 2027 increase, but SSI is not the same program as Social Security. Because January 1 is a holiday, the SSI payment scheduled for January is issued on December 31, 2026. That earlier deposit date does not mean the Social Security COLA starts in December for regular Social Security benefits; the Social Security increase applies to benefits payable in January.
How to check whether your family could exceed $3,000
- Identify the worker’s record involved: retirement, disability or survivor benefits.
- List every family member currently eligible on that record and verify whether eligibility is expected to continue in January 2027.
- Review the worker’s primary insurance amount and the family-maximum rules that apply to the record; do not total separate category averages.
- Check the COLA notice in the Message Center of your my Social Security account when notices become available in late November 2026.
- Compare the notice’s individual amounts and the combined family total with the applicable family maximum. Contact SSA if a listed family member, payment status or eligibility date is incorrect.
What the $3,000 headline does—and does not—tell you
The published figures establish that some common family categories have estimated averages above $3,000 in January 2027. They do not establish that every household with children, every widow or every disabled worker will receive that much, and SSA has not published a category-specific national count of families receiving more than $3,000. The decisive factors for an individual household remain the worker’s record, eligible family members and the family-maximum calculation.
