No verified Q2 2026 ranking of credit unions by combined loans and leases is established in the available official material. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) does provide the underlying quarterly Call Report records and an active-institution spreadsheet, so a defensible list can be built—but only after choosing the exact account definition, population, units and quarter.
The latest comparable quarter is Q2 2026, reported as of June 30, 2026. NCUA reported $1.76 trillion in systemwide loans outstanding, but that figure covers all federally insured credit unions and does not identify the institutions with the largest individual portfolios.

What is known about the largest portfolios
The direct answer is that the names and balances of the largest loan-and-lease portfolios have not been verified from the published material available here. A third-party page does rank 4,299 credit unions that filed for Q2 2026, but its visible ranking measure is total assets. Asset size is not the same as the balance of loans and leases, so that list cannot answer this question.
NCUA’s own data route is more appropriate. Its quarterly Call Report system covers federally insured credit unions, and its active-institution spreadsheet includes key fields such as membership, assets and loans. The agency also publishes final, comma-delimited quarterly files that can be imported into a spreadsheet, database or statistical program. Those records are the right starting point for an institution-by-institution ranking.

A published table should therefore either provide a reproducible calculation from those records or clearly label itself as pending verification. Inferring loan-portfolio leaders from an asset ranking would overstate what the data show.
Q2 2026 system figures provide context, not a leaderboard
NCUA’s Q2 2026 release, issued September 14, 2026, describes the federally insured credit union system as of June 30, 2026. These figures help establish the scale and condition of the market, but none is an individual credit union’s portfolio.
| Measure | Q2 2026 value | Change or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Total loans outstanding | $1.76 trillion | Up $82 billion, or 4.9%, from a year earlier; systemwide |
| Total assets | $2.50 trillion | Up $120 billion, or 5.0%, from a year earlier; not a loan balance |
| Average outstanding loan balance | $19,906 | Up $978, or 5.2%, year over year; an average loan, not an average institution |
| Delinquency rate | 96 basis points | Six basis points above the prior-year quarter; systemwide |
| Net charge-off ratio | 78 basis points | NCUA described it as little changed from Q2 2025 |
| Loan-to-share ratio | 82.9% | Compared with 83.1% one year earlier |
The $1.76 trillion total is useful as a reasonableness check: the sum of institution-level balances should be on a compatible basis and close to the agency’s system total after accounting for population, account definition and rounding. It should not be divided among institutions or treated as the balance of the largest credit union.

Why an asset ranking cannot substitute for a loan ranking
Total assets include cash, investments, property, other receivables and other balance-sheet items in addition to loans and leases. Two credit unions with similar assets can have very different lending strategies. One may hold a larger investment portfolio or more liquidity, while another may put a greater share of its balance sheet into consumer, mortgage, commercial or member-business lending.
The reverse is also possible: an institution with fewer assets can have a higher loan concentration. An asset table can be a useful secondary context column, but it cannot establish the order of loan-and-lease portfolios. The third-party Q2 2026 page should therefore be treated only as an asset-size reference, not evidence of the requested leaders.
How to build a defensible ranking from NCUA data
The following workflow produces a list that another reader can reproduce. It also prevents the most common errors: mixing reporting dates, using the wrong population, or sorting a proxy measure.
Rank #3
- Fix the population. State whether the table covers all federally insured credit unions, only federal credit unions, or another defined group. The NCUA active-institution file is designed for federally insured institutions; do not silently combine insured and uninsured entities.
- Fix the reporting date. For the latest surfaced quarter, use Q2 2026, with a reporting date of June 30, 2026. Every row must refer to that same quarter-end date. Do not combine a March filing for one institution with a June filing for another.
- Download the matching records. Obtain the active-institution spreadsheet and the corresponding quarterly Call Report file. NCUA describes the quarterly files as final and comma-delimited, making them suitable for spreadsheet or database import.
- Identify the correct account definition. Locate the Call Report line for total loans and leases, or the documented components that must be added. The exact account code and whether a combined line exists must be checked in the relevant Call Report form and account instructions. Do not guess from a column labeled simply “loans.”
- Choose the balance basis. Record whether the ranking uses gross outstanding balances, balances net of allowances, or another reported measure. Use one basis for every institution. If leases are reported separately, document whether they are included in the total or added as a component.
- Normalize units. Confirm whether the source reports dollars, thousands or millions. Convert every row to the same unit before sorting, and retain the original unit in the methodology note.
- Handle filing status consistently. Decide how to treat missing, amended or superseded filings. A practical rule is to use the latest valid record for the selected quarter and flag any amended filing rather than retaining duplicate versions.
- Sort descending. Sort the resulting combined balance from largest to smallest. Keep the institution name, charter or identification number, reporting date, balance and unit in the output so a reader can trace each row.
- Verify the leaders. Check the highest-ranked records against the official Call Report or an individual Financial Performance Report (FPR). Investigate any unusually large value, missing component or mismatch with the system total before publication.
- Preserve the evidence. Save the file name, download date, quarter, account definition, unit conversion and treatment of amendments. A ranking without these details is difficult to audit and can become misleading when a later quarter is released.
Defining “loans and leases” before adding numbers
The phrase sounds precise but can conceal accounting choices. A Call Report may present a combined total, or it may list loan categories and lease balances separately. Categories can include real-estate loans, consumer loans, commercial loans, member-business loans and other receivables. The relevant instructions determine which lines belong in the requested total.

Adding a subtotal to its components would double-count. Conversely, leaving out a separately reported lease balance would understate a combined loans-and-leases measure if the definition requires it.
Gross and net balances also answer different questions. Gross outstanding shows the amount owed before loss allowances; a net figure reflects an accounting deduction. The ranking must state which one it uses and apply that choice uniformly. If the Call Report instructions do not establish a combined line, publish the component formula beside the table instead of presenting an unexplained total.

A practical spreadsheet procedure
After importing the final quarterly file, create a working sheet with one row per institution. Keep the source identifier in a separate column so names that changed during the quarter do not create duplicate rows.
- Filter the reporting-date field to June 30, 2026 and the selected insured-institution population.
- Keep only the validated loan-and-lease account or the documented component columns. Remove duplicate institution records created by amended versions according to the rule stated in the methodology.
- Convert the reported unit to dollars, if necessary, with a clearly labeled formula. For example, a value reported in thousands should be multiplied by 1,000; never mix converted and unconverted rows.
- If the definition requires components, add them in a new column and label the formula. Do not overwrite the source fields.
- Sort the calculated column from largest to smallest and assign a rank with a tie rule, such as equal rank for equal balances.
- Compare the sum of the ranked balances with NCUA’s $1.76 trillion systemwide loans-outstanding figure. Differences can be legitimate when the account definition, population or gross/net basis differs, but they must be explained rather than hidden.
A database workflow follows the same logic: filter one quarter and population, select the documented account fields, convert units, group by institution identifier, calculate the defined total, order descending and retain the source version. The software is less important than an explicit definition and an auditable input file.

NCUA’s Financial Performance Reports summarize an individual credit union’s assets, liabilities, capital, income and expenses. Users may request an FPR after the institution has submitted and NCUA has validated its Call Report. An FPR is useful for checking that the leading rows use the expected balance-sheet measure and that the institution identity matches the spreadsheet record.

Peer and aggregate reports are normally available six to eight weeks after a cycle date. That timing matters when comparing a newly released quarter: an institution’s raw Call Report record may appear before a peer report is available. Use the same quarter and version for every verification, and note whether an amended filing appeared after the initial download.
How to interpret a completed ranking
Portfolio size is not lending quality
A large balance indicates scale, not safety or performance. Once a verified size table exists, readers should examine delinquency, net charge-offs, capital and concentration separately. NCUA’s systemwide Q2 2026 delinquency rate of 96 basis points and net charge-off ratio of 78 basis points are context measures; they do not identify which institution has the largest portfolio or determine whether an individual portfolio is sound.
Loan-to-share is a different exposure measure
The 82.9% system loan-to-share ratio compares lending with member shares. It can help describe funding and liquidity posture, but it is not a ranking of loan dollars. Keep it in a separate column or discussion from portfolio size.

Including total assets beside loans can show how lending-heavy an institution is, provided the two measures are labeled separately and come from the same quarter. Never present assets as a substitute when the headline question is loans and leases.
What a trustworthy published table should disclose
- Population, such as all federally insured credit unions.
- Quarter and exact as-of date, such as Q2 2026, June 30, 2026.
- The Call Report account code, line name or component formula used.
- Gross or net balance basis and treatment of allowances.
- Whether leases are included in a combined line or added separately.
- Units, rounding and any conversion from thousands or millions.
- Rules for missing, amended, superseded or duplicate filings.
- The official file name or report version used to produce the table.
- A separate label for any asset, delinquency, charge-off or loan-to-share context.
Until those fields are documented and the records are actually sorted, claims about named leaders remain unverified. The official data route exists; the missing step is a transparent institution-level calculation using one definition and one quarter.
