SSI recipients must report any change that could affect eligibility or payment. That includes wages and other income, work, resources, household and living arrangements, address, marital status, certain benefits, institutional stays, immigration or citizenship status, and other circumstances SSA identifies. Report a change as soon as possible and no later than the tenth day of the month after the month it occurred. Wages must be reported every month; SSA’s October 7, 2026 guidance states that the tenth day is the deadline and encourages reporting by the sixth day after wages are received.
What SSI recipients must report
Supplemental Security Income is based on financial need and other eligibility conditions. A change does not have to reduce your check before you report it. If it might affect eligibility or payment, tell the Social Security Administration and let SSA determine the result.

Income and work
Report changes in earned and unearned income. Examples include wages, net earnings from self-employment, pensions, unemployment payments, child support, and cash or other help received from another person. If you are married and living with your spouse, your spouse’s income may be counted in determining SSI. A child’s SSI case can involve parental income. Report those household income changes even when the money is not paid directly to the SSI recipient.
Resources and assets
Tell SSA when you obtain, sell, transfer, or experience a change in the value of a resource. Resources can include bank or other financial accounts, cash, vehicles, real property, and other assets. A spouse’s resources may matter when a recipient is married and living with that spouse; parental resources can matter in a child’s case.
Household and living arrangements
Report someone moving into or out of your household and any other change in household size or living arrangement. Changes in rent, utilities, or the amount you pay toward household expenses can affect the value of in-kind support and maintenance and therefore must be reported. Entering or leaving an institution, such as a hospital, nursing home, or correctional facility, is also reportable.
Marriage, separation, divorce, and deaths
Report marriage, separation, divorce, annulment, and the death of a spouse or household member. SSA also identifies certain changes involving ineligible children who live in the household. These family changes can alter income deeming, household composition, or living-arrangement calculations.

Status and other eligibility events
- A change in citizenship or lawful noncitizen status.
- Becoming eligible for another benefit or payment.
- For some noncitizens, specified changes involving a sponsor or the sponsor’s spouse.
- A change in school attendance for a recipient under age 22.
- Improvement in a disability recipient’s medical condition.
- Certain unsatisfied felony or arrest warrants.
- Leaving the United States for a full calendar month or for 30 consecutive days or more.
These categories do not mean every event applies to every recipient. They are a practical checklist of the situations SSA says can affect SSI. When uncertain, report the event rather than trying to predict the calculation yourself.
When each change is due
General rule for non-wage changes
SSA’s 2026 reporting-responsibilities guidance says to report a change as soon as possible and no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which it happened. In ordinary calendar terms, that means the tenth day of the following month. For example, a household change that occurs on September 2 or September 30 is generally due by October 10.
SSA’s August 2026 FAQ describes the same requirement as reporting within the first 10 days of the month after the change. The regulation, 20 CFR § 416.708, establishes reportable events; SSA’s current operational guidance supplies the practical deadline and methods.

Wages are not a one-time report. Report wages every month, including wages from a new job, a continuing job, changed hours, or changed pay. SSA’s October 7, 2026 guidance states that wages are due by the tenth day of the month after you receive them. The same guidance encourages reporting by the sixth day to reduce the chance of an overpayment. Thus, the tenth is the stated deadline; the sixth is SSA’s recommended earlier target.

SSA’s wage instructions also say self-employment income is reported yearly by January 10 and whenever your estimate changes. Keep monthly wage reports separate from reports of other income changes, which are made when the change occurs and no later than the tenth day of the next month.
How to report a change
The appropriate channel depends on what changed and what options SSA has enabled for your account. Availability can differ, so follow the instructions SSA gives you and retain proof of submission.
| Change or task | Available route | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Non-wage change, such as address, household, resources, or marital status | Call your local Social Security office; the general number is 1-800-772-1213, or TTY 1-800-325-0778 | SSA may require documents or additional details. |
| Document submission for a reported change | Signed-in users may upload documents with an explanation and identifying and contact information | Use the upload instructions in your SSA account and save confirmation. |
| Monthly wages | SSA mobile wage-reporting app or automated telephone reporting at 1-866-772-0953 | Contact SSA before first using automated wage reporting and after changing employers. |
| Monthly wages through an employer | Payroll Information Exchange (PIE) through an authorized employer | Continue another reporting method until SSA confirms PIE has started. |
| Reminders | Monthly email or text reminders | Sign up through SSA if the option is offered for your case. |
Do not assume that an app, PIE, online upload, or automated line is available to every recipient. If you change employers, contact SSA before relying on a previous wage-reporting setup. With PIE, continue reporting another way until SSA confirms the exchange is active.

- Identify the date and type of change. Write down when the income, move, household change, institutional admission, status change, or other event occurred. For wages, record the date you received the pay and the pay period.
- Collect supporting information. Keep pay stubs, employer details, benefit letters, lease or utility information, bank or asset records, admission or discharge paperwork, and documents showing marriage, divorce, death, immigration, or address changes, as applicable.
- Calculate the deadline. For a general change, count to the tenth day of the next month. For wages, use the tenth day after receipt as the deadline and aim for the sixth day when possible.
- Choose the matching SSA channel. Call the local office for non-wage changes, use the document-upload option when directed, and use the wage app, automated line, or confirmed PIE process for monthly wages.
- State the facts clearly. Include your name, identifying information, contact details, what changed, the effective date, amounts involved, and the names of other people affected in your household.
- Save evidence of the report. Keep confirmation screens, upload receipts, call details, mailed copies, wage-reporting acknowledgments, and the documents you supplied. Record the date, method, and any SSA representative or confirmation number.
- Respond to follow-up requests. SSA may ask for proof or clarification. Send requested information by the stated deadline and keep a copy of everything.
Why prompt and accurate reporting matters
Payment corrections and overpayments
Late or inaccurate information can produce either an underpayment or an overpayment. If SSA later determines that you received too much, it may ask you to repay the overpayment. Prompt reporting gives SSA a chance to adjust the payment closer to the month when the change occurred.

Possible payment reductions for missed reports
SSA says it may reduce a payment by $25 to $100 for each time a required change is not reported or is reported late. This is a possible reduction, not an automatic flat fine in every case. The amount and action depend on the circumstances and SSA’s determination.
Sanctions for intentional concealment or false statements
Knowingly making a false or misleading statement, or intentionally failing to report an important change, can lead to payment sanctions. SSA describes the first sanction period as six months of withheld payments, followed by 12 months and then 24 months for later sanction periods. Its August 2026 FAQ also warns that intentional concealment may result in criminal prosecution. These outcomes are not automatic consequences of every late report; they concern knowingly false or deliberately withheld information.

You start work or receive a raise
Report the job and the wages each month. Include the employer, pay dates, gross amounts shown on pay records, and any change in hours or rate. Do not wait to see whether the earnings will lower SSI; SSA must make that determination.
You move in with someone or someone moves out
Report the date the household composition changed, who now lives in the home, and how rent, utilities, food, or other expenses are paid. A change in the amount you contribute can matter even when no one’s income changed.

You enter a hospital or other institution
Report admission and discharge dates for a hospital, nursing home, correctional facility, or similar institution. The length and type of stay can affect SSI eligibility or payment, so provide the facility name and documentation if requested.
You marry, separate, divorce, or lose a household member
Report the event and its effective date. Include the spouse or household member’s income and resources when SSA asks for them, because deeming and living-arrangement rules may apply.
You plan to leave the United States
Tell SSA if you will be outside the United States for a full calendar month or for 30 consecutive days or more. Report the departure and return information and follow SSA’s instructions about continuing eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecordkeeping that prevents disputes
Maintain one reporting log for the calendar year. For every entry, record the event date, the date you reported it, the channel used, the amounts or people involved, documents sent, and the confirmation you received. For wages, retain each pay stub and note whether the report was made by the sixth-day target or the tenth-day deadline. If you report by phone, write down the date, number called, and any confirmation or representative name provided.
Keep copies until SSA has processed the change and your payment reflects it. If a notice later uses an incorrect amount or effective date, your log and documents make it easier to request a correction and explain what you reported.
A practical monthly routine for wage recipients
- At each pay date, set aside the pay stub and note the amount received.
- By the sixth day after receipt when feasible, submit the wage report using an SSA-approved method.
- If you have not reported by the sixth, submit no later than the tenth day after the month in which the wages were received, following SSA’s current instructions.
- Check that SSA accepted the report and preserve the acknowledgment.
- Tell SSA immediately if the employer, pay rate, schedule, or job status changes.
This routine does not replace annual self-employment reporting. Self-employment income must also be reported by January 10 and whenever your estimate changes.
When to contact SSA instead of guessing
Contact SSA when you cannot tell whether an asset is a resource, whether help from another person counts as income, whether a household member’s circumstances must be included, or which wage channel is active. Also contact SSA after a change in employer, immigration or citizenship status, institutional stay, disability condition, or international travel. Your responsibility is to report the facts; SSA decides how the facts affect SSI.
