Banking jobs built around routine information processing face the greatest exposure to AI: tellers, data-entry and clerical workers, bookkeeping and payroll staff, and some customer-service, analyst and underwriting roles. The clearest growth areas are fintech engineering, AI and machine learning, data science, software development, cybersecurity and digital transformation. Exposure does not mean a job will vanish: AI is more likely to automate particular tasks first, changing how many banking roles are done.
Which banking jobs are most exposed to AI automation?
Roles centered on repeatable transactions, record handling and standard information processing are the clearest exposure zone. International Labour Organization (ILO) financial-sector occupation projections identify several clerical and analytical roles as declining, while the World Economic Forum (WEF) lists many of the same occupations among the fastest-declining globally for 2025–2030.

These lists indicate direction, not a guaranteed outcome for every employee, bank or country. A role can be exposed because some of its tasks are automatable even when the occupation remains necessary.
| Banking work | Why it is exposed | What the outlook indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Bank tellers and related clerks | Many duties involve routine transaction processing and handling standard information. | Named as a declining occupation in the ILO financial-sector report and among the fastest-declining roles in WEF’s 2025–2030 outlook. |
| Data-entry clerks | Entering, checking and transferring structured information is repeatable and digital. | Listed as declining by both the ILO financial-sector report and WEF’s 2025–2030 outlook. |
| Accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks | Routine records, calculations and processing can be assisted or automated. | Listed as declining in the ILO financial-sector report and among the fastest-declining roles in WEF’s outlook; WEF also lists accountants and auditors among the fastest-declining. |
| Client-information and customer-service workers | Standard requests and information retrieval can involve predictable, repeatable tasks. | Included among declining occupations in the ILO financial-sector report. |
| Financial analysts | Some information gathering, document writing and basic analysis are more automatable than judgment-heavy work. | Included among declining occupations in the ILO financial-sector report. This is not a forecast that every analyst position will be eliminated. |
| Insurance underwriters | Standardized information review and assessment can be supported by automated systems. | Some underwriting work appears among declining occupations in the ILO financial-sector report. |
Are bank tellers going away?
There is evidence of pressure on teller work, but not a basis for saying all tellers will disappear. WEF places bank tellers and related clerks among the fastest-declining occupations in its 2025–2030 outlook, while the ILO identifies them as declining in its financial-sector projections. Those are directional forecasts, not a count of branches closing or jobs removed.
#1 Best Overall
The work itself is a mixture of tasks. Routine transactions are more exposed than assistance requiring personal interaction, judgment or handling an unusual situation. As banks automate more standard service, branch roles may change toward resolving exceptions and helping customers with needs that are harder to address through a standardized process. That is a task-based interpretation, not a bank-specific prediction.
Will AI reduce financial analyst jobs?
Some analyst tasks are exposed, but the job title alone cannot tell you how much of a position is at risk. The ILO financial-sector report includes financial analysts among declining occupations; the Bank of England says AI tools may be more likely to automate routine administration, information processing, document writing and basic analysis. Work that depends on interpreting results, weighing uncertainty or taking responsibility for a recommendation is less straightforward to automate fully.
For an analyst, the practical question is how much of the working week goes to repeatable preparation versus interpreting evidence and communicating its significance. Automating parts of research or report preparation can change the amount and type of work without removing the need for a professional who can challenge assumptions and explain a decision.

Which banking and fintech jobs are growing?
Growth is concentrated in roles that build, operate, secure or apply digital systems and data. The ILO financial-sector report identifies the following as emerging occupations; WEF’s 2025–2030 outlook also names several technology roles among the fastest-growing jobs.
| Growth area | Roles identified in the outlooks | What the work broadly involves |
|---|---|---|
| AI and data | AI and machine-learning specialists; data analysts and scientists; big-data specialists | Developing or applying models and turning large or complex data into usable analysis. |
| Financial technology and software | FinTech engineers; software and applications developers | Building and maintaining digital financial products, applications and supporting systems. |
| Security and infrastructure | Information-security analysts; cybersecurity specialists; database and network professionals | Protecting information and supporting the technology infrastructure on which digital services rely. |
| Digital change and user experience | Digital-transformation specialists; UX and human-machine-interaction designers | Adapting services and workflows to digital delivery and designing how people interact with systems. |
WEF specifically names Big Data Specialists, FinTech Engineers, AI and Machine Learning Specialists, and Software and Applications Developers among the fastest-growing roles in its 2025–2030 outlook. The ILO financial-sector list provides a broader set of emerging occupations, including security, database, network and human-machine-interaction work.
Does AI replace whole banking jobs or automate tasks?
Usually, the first change is to tasks rather than an entire occupation. The ILO’s 20 May 2025 update says one in four workers globally are in an occupation with some generative-AI exposure, but most jobs are expected to be transformed rather than made redundant. Clerical occupations have the highest exposure; 3.3% of workers are in the highest exposure category.

The Bank of England’s task distinction helps explain why exposure is not a simple replacement forecast: “AI tools may be more likely to automate tasks involving routine administration, processing information, writing documents or basic analysis.” It says tasks requiring physical skills, interpersonal interaction, judgment, creativity or complex decision-making may be harder to automate. A single banking job can contain both kinds of work, so an exposure label should not be read as a prediction about an individual worker.
How can you compare the automation risk of two banking jobs?
Compare the tasks and responsibilities inside each role, rather than relying only on job titles. The following five questions offer a practical framework; the resulting comparison is an inference from task evidence, not a bank-specific forecast.
- How much work is routine information processing? A role dominated by repeatable data entry, transaction handling or standard checks is more exposed than one where those tasks are a small part of the week.
- How much judgment and accountability does it require? Consider whether the person must interpret rules, resolve ambiguous cases, explain a decision or accept responsibility for the outcome.
- How much depends on interpersonal work? Customer relationships, sensitive conversations and adapting to a person’s circumstances are less reducible to a standardized process than basic information retrieval.
- How data- and software-intensive is it? Digital fluency can mean a role is affected by automation, but it can also create opportunities to work on, oversee or improve the systems being introduced.
- Does AI substitute for the task or augment a professional? A system that prepares information for review may change the workflow while leaving the human decision-maker’s role intact; a system that handles a standardized task end to end may reduce the need for that task to be performed manually.
For example, a teller role with a large share of standard transactions is more exposed on the routine-processing axis. A risk, compliance, relationship or advisory role generally involves more judgment and accountability, suggesting heavier augmentation than full substitution. These are relative task-based comparisons, not guarantees that one occupation is safe or another will disappear.

What does AI exposure mean in different countries?
Exposure estimates vary substantially by national income group. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that AI may affect about 60% of jobs in advanced economies, 40% in emerging markets and 26% in low-income countries. These are broad estimates of job exposure, not banking-only figures or counts of positions that will be lost.

A global occupation list cannot predict a specific bank’s staffing decisions. Local regulation, branch strategy, labor costs, adoption speed and collective bargaining can change how quickly tasks are automated and whether efficiency gains lead to redesigned jobs, fewer hires or role reductions. A teller or analyst in one market may therefore face a different pace of change from someone with the same title elsewhere.

The ILO’s 25 March 2024 financial-sector report calls for investment in training, diversity and well-being policies as digitalization changes work. For an individual, a sensible development plan combines relevant technical skills with the human responsibilities that remain important when routine work is automated.

- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Build AI literacy. Learn what AI systems can and cannot do, how to check their outputs, and when a person must review or escalate a result.
- Strengthen data skills. Data analytics and data interpretation can help workers move from preparing information toward assessing what it means.
- Develop cybersecurity awareness. Security is a named growth area, and understanding safe information handling is relevant beyond specialist security posts.
- Explore fintech and software skills. Fintech engineering and software development are among the identified growth areas for people interested in building or maintaining digital financial services.
- Practise judgment and communication. Interpreting uncertain information, explaining decisions and handling complex customer needs complement capabilities that are harder to automate.
Training is not a guarantee of promotion or protection from restructuring. It is a way to prepare for changing task mixes and to qualify for work in the areas where the outlook identifies demand.
What does the overall jobs outlook say?
WEF’s 2025 report estimates that 170 million jobs will be created and 92 million displaced globally by 2030, for a net increase of 78 million; it also estimates that 22% of jobs will be disrupted. These economy-wide figures provide context for the scale of labor-market change, but they do not predict how many banking posts will be added or lost. For banking workers, the more useful signal is the contrast between declining routine clerical occupations and growing technology, data and security roles.

Does an AI-exposed job mean a bank has decided to cut that role?
No. Exposure describes the potential for technology to affect tasks; it does not reveal a particular employer’s budget, staffing plan or implementation schedule. A bank can adopt a tool to support existing staff, redesign jobs or reduce some work, and the occupation-level outlooks do not determine which choice it will make.
Can a banking employee move into a technology role without becoming a programmer?
The outlook includes work in data analysis, information security, digital transformation and user experience as well as engineering. The exact entry requirements vary by employer and role, so workers should compare job descriptions and training requirements rather than assume every growth occupation requires the same coding background.
Are AI forecasts specific to my bank or city?
The cited occupation outlooks are not bank-by-bank staffing forecasts, and the global figures are not a substitute for local labor-market data. For a local decision, look at your employer’s announced service and technology changes and the requirements in relevant vacancies.
Is moving into a growing field a guaranteed way to avoid layoffs?
No. A growing occupation can still face competition, reorganizations or changing skill requirements, and a sector-wide projection cannot promise an individual outcome. Evaluate a move by the actual duties, required qualifications and opportunities available in your market.
