United Airlines Holdings reported 1,066 mainline aircraft in its 2025 Form 10-K; American Airlines Group reported 1,013 in its 2025 Form 10-K. The filings were submitted in 2026 and record fleet size at the close of 2025. The comparable figures put United 53 aircraft ahead of American.

What counts as an airline’s fleet?
This comparison uses each carrier’s reported mainline aircraft count. That boundary matters: airlines also work with regional carriers, whose aircraft may be reported separately or described as supporting the mainline operation. United listed 424 regional aircraft under capacity purchase agreements at December 31, 2025, separate from its 1,066 mainline aircraft. American says wholly owned and third-party regional carriers operate as American Eagle under capacity purchase agreements.
Adding regional aircraft to one airline’s total while leaving another airline’s regional partners out would produce an uneven comparison. The filings do not provide a single, consistently defined census of all airlines worldwide, so the figures support a comparison of reported mainline fleets rather than a definitive live ranking that includes every affiliate, cargo operator, or other fleet category.

Fleet size is not the same as airline size in every sense
Aircraft count measures the number of aircraft in a defined fleet at a point in time. It does not by itself establish which airline carries the most passengers, earns the most revenue, serves the most routes, or offers the most capacity. United’s 2025 annual report describes it as the world’s largest airline by available seat miles—a capacity measure, not a claim about having the most aircraft.
Fleet inventories also do not measure service quality or passenger traffic. The ranking can differ when the metric or the counting boundary changes.

How current is the ranking?
The figures above are as of December 31, 2025. Because fleets change as aircraft enter, leave, or move between operating categories, they should not be presented as an exact count for October 2026. The company filings provide authoritative year-end snapshots, but no formal regulator or standards-body definition of “largest airline by fleet size” is established here. The clearest comparison is therefore to name the fleet boundary and the measurement date.
