If your inheritance arrived as cash, place it temporarily in a liquid deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank or an NCUA-insured credit union while you decide what comes next. A savings account or money market deposit account keeps the money accessible without forcing an immediate investment decision. A short-term certificate of deposit (CD) can work when you know you will not need the funds before maturity, but an early-withdrawal penalty can reduce what you receive.
Before moving the money, identify whether you inherited cash, an IRA or other retirement account, securities, or property. Those assets have different transfer, distribution, valuation, and tax rules. The U.S.-focused framework below is a way to preserve access and avoid preventable mistakes; your state law, account documents, beneficiary status, and existing balances may change the right choice.

Start with a temporary holding plan
Give yourself a defined decision window rather than leaving the money in an account you do not understand. During the first few days, verify the amount received, the legal owner of the account, and whether the transfer is complete. Keep the money separate from everyday spending so an emotional purchase or an automatic bill does not consume funds you intended to preserve.
Use a liquid insured deposit account for cash
An FDIC-insured savings account at a bank or an NCUA-insured share savings account at a federally insured credit union is a straightforward interim location. A bank money market deposit account can serve the same purpose if its balance, withdrawal, minimum-balance, and fee rules fit your needs. These are deposit products, not promises of a particular rate; compare the institution’s current terms when you open or move the account.

Set a decision date
Choose a review date—perhaps 30, 60, or 90 days—and write down what must be decided by then: paying identified debts, reserving taxes, distributing family property, selecting an investment policy, or obtaining professional advice. A date prevents an “temporary” account from becoming an unexamined permanent arrangement.
Compare the available temporary locations
The best interim location depends on how quickly you may need the funds, how much is already held at the same institution, and whether the inherited asset is actually cash. Use this comparison before opening anything.
| Holding choice | Protection | Access and trade-offs | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insured savings account | Eligible bank deposits may receive FDIC coverage; eligible credit-union shares may receive NCUA coverage, subject to limits. | Generally easy to withdraw; interest, fees, transfer limits, and opening requirements vary. | You need flexible access while making a plan. |
| Money market deposit account | A deposit account can receive FDIC or NCUA coverage within applicable limits. | Often liquid, but minimum balances, transaction limits, or withdrawal conditions may apply. | You want deposit-account access with terms that suit a larger balance. |
| Short-term CD | An eligible bank or credit-union deposit remains subject to the applicable insurance limit. | The term fixes a maturity date; withdrawing early can trigger a contract penalty. | You can identify when the money will be needed and can leave it untouched until then. |
| Money market mutual fund | It is an investment fund, not an FDIC- or NCUA-insured deposit. | Value, settlement timing, and protections differ from a bank account; principal is not guaranteed by deposit insurance. | You already use a brokerage account and understand investment risk and settlement. |
| Treasury bills or other Treasury securities | They are U.S. government securities, not FDIC-insured deposits. | Maturity and sale timing matter; buying and selling requires brokerage or TreasuryDirect mechanics. | You accept a security rather than an on-demand deposit and can manage the timing. |
Rates and yields change. Check the rate as of the day you open the account, whether it is promotional, and what happens after any introductory period. Do not select an account solely because its advertised rate is the highest if its access rules or insurance arrangement do not fit.
Understand the $250,000 deposit-insurance rule
For an FDIC-insured bank, the standard coverage limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The FDIC combines eligible deposits that you own in the same category at that bank when applying the limit. A savings account, checking account, and bank money market deposit account in your individual name therefore count together rather than receiving separate $250,000 limits.

Existing balances change the amount covered
Suppose you already have $80,000 in individual deposits at a bank and receive a $220,000 cash inheritance. Your combined individual deposits would be $300,000 at that institution, leaving $50,000 above the standard category limit. The fact that the new account has a different product name does not create a new limit.
List every eligible deposit at each institution before transferring the inheritance. Include accounts held under the same ownership category and check whether a bank operates multiple brands that are actually one insured institution. Ask the bank or credit union to confirm the legal insured entity, not just the marketing name.
Use separate ownership categories only when they are genuine
FDIC rules treat certain ownership categories separately, such as qualifying joint accounts and some trust or retirement arrangements, but the requirements are specific. Do not retitle an account casually to manufacture coverage. The account agreement, beneficiaries, number of owners, and applicable category rules determine how balances are counted. The FDIC’s “Understanding Deposit Insurance” and “Deposit Insurance At A Glance” explain the aggregation framework; NCUA guidance provides the corresponding rules for federally insured credit-union shares.
Do not confuse a money market deposit account with a mutual fund
The names sound similar but describe different products.

Money market deposit account
A bank or credit-union money market deposit account is a deposit product. As the CFPB explains, “Like other deposit accounts, money market accounts are insured by the FDIC or NCUA, up to $250,000 held by the same owner or owners.” Insurance still depends on the institution being properly insured, the funds being eligible deposits, and your total balance staying within the applicable limit. Read the disclosure for minimum balances, transaction limits, and fees.
Money market mutual fund
A money market mutual fund is held through an investment account. It is not an insured bank deposit, and its value and liquidity are governed by fund and brokerage rules. Brokerage protections such as SIPC coverage, where applicable, address a broker’s custody failure under specified conditions; they do not turn the fund into an FDIC-insured deposit or guarantee against investment losses. If preserving principal and immediate access are your priorities, compare the fund with an insured deposit account rather than treating them as interchangeable.
When a short-term CD makes sense—and when it does not
A CD can be useful when the likely holding period is clear. Select a term that ends before you expect to need the money, and confirm whether the account automatically renews. Put the maturity date on your calendar so the funds do not roll into a new term accidentally.

CD contracts commonly impose an early-withdrawal penalty. The penalty may consume some or all of the interest and, depending on the contract, can affect principal. Read the disclosure before depositing the inheritance; a slightly higher rate is not worth losing flexibility if an estate settlement, tax bill, home purchase, or family obligation could require cash sooner.

Use a CD only for the portion with a known date
If you expect staggered needs, do not lock the entire inheritance into one maturity. Keep the near-term amount in a liquid account and consider separate short terms for money with later, reasonably certain uses. This “ladder” approach is a planning method, not a promise of higher returns, and every CD remains subject to the institution’s insurance limit and contract.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.First identify what you actually inherited
A transfer described as an “inheritance” may contain several asset types. The temporary account decision is different for each.
Cash bequest
If an executor or financial institution delivered cash to you, use the insured-deposit framework above. Preserve the closing statement, distribution letter, and records showing the amount and date received. Those documents help reconcile the estate and explain the source of funds to your tax professional or financial institution.

Do not cash out or move an inherited retirement account as if it were an ordinary savings balance. Beneficiary distribution timing and income-tax rules depend on the account type, your relationship to the decedent, the date of death, and your beneficiary category. The IRS “Retirement Topics: Beneficiary” guidance and Publication 590-B describe the governing framework. Keep the inherited account titled in a way that identifies the decedent and beneficiary, and ask the custodian what transfer or distribution method is permitted before authorizing a transaction.

Inherited securities
Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other investments are not automatically converted to cash by becoming yours. Selling may create a gain or loss, and the account may have beneficiary or estate-transfer paperwork still outstanding. Obtain the custodian’s valuation and transaction history before deciding whether to sell, transfer in kind, or retain the investment.
Inherited real estate or personal property
For inherited property, the IRS generally ties basis to fair market value at the decedent’s date of death, subject to exceptions. Keep the appraisal, estate inventory, date-of-death valuation, and improvement records. If you later sell for more than your basis, a taxable gain may result; selling for less can produce a different result. Do not sell or distribute property before you understand the valuation and ownership documents.
A practical process for choosing the account
- Confirm the asset and title. Determine whether the money is unrestricted cash, an inherited retirement account, securities, or property, and identify every beneficiary or ownership document.
- Separate known obligations. Reserve amounts for estate expenses, taxes, debt payments, or a planned distribution before calculating what is genuinely available for temporary holding.
- Inventory current deposits. Record each institution, account owner, ownership category, and balance. Add the inheritance to the relevant totals.
- Verify insurance. Confirm FDIC membership for a bank or NCUA federal insurance for a credit union. Ask how the institution will classify the account and whether any portion will exceed the applicable limit.
- Set your access requirement. Decide whether you may need same-day access, ordinary electronic-transfer timing, or can wait until a specified CD maturity.
- Compare total terms. Review rate, fees, minimum balance, transaction limits, transfer cutoffs, withdrawal penalties, automatic-renewal provisions, and customer-service procedures.
- Open or move only the needed amount. Keep a cash buffer liquid and avoid moving retirement assets or property proceeds until their tax and transfer rules are clear.
- Document the review date. Recheck the balance, insurance coverage, and plan on the date you selected. Rates and account terms can change while the money is waiting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Leaving an uninsured excess unnoticed: Combine balances by institution and ownership category before depositing the inheritance.
- Assuming a familiar name means a deposit: Read whether the product is a deposit account or a mutual fund held in a brokerage account.
- Locking up all the money: Match a CD term to a credible need date and keep uncertain expenses liquid.
- Ignoring fees and minimums: A high stated rate can be offset by monthly fees, balance requirements, or a penalty for an avoidable withdrawal.
- Moving an inherited IRA into your own IRA: Beneficiary accounts have separate rules; obtain custodian and tax guidance first.
- Discarding estate records: Keep valuation, distribution, and ownership documents, especially for property and securities.
- Treating federal guidance as universal: State inheritance or estate taxes, probate requirements, and non-U.S. rules are not established by the federal sources discussed here.
Tax and professional-help boundaries
The receipt of an inheritance, the income earned while it sits in an account, and a later sale of inherited property are separate questions. Do not assume that the inheritance is automatically taxable income, and do not assume every later transaction is tax-free. Federal treatment can depend on the asset, valuation, beneficiary status, and timing. State rules may add obligations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Obtain qualified tax or financial advice before acting when the balance is large enough to exceed deposit-insurance limits, the inheritance includes an IRA or employer plan, property has a difficult valuation, several beneficiaries disagree, or you are considering an irreversible investment. Bring the account statements, beneficiary paperwork, date-of-death valuations, and estate distribution records to that conversation.
How long should the money stay in the temporary account?
Keep it there until you can answer three questions in writing: what the money is legally and tax-wise, how much must remain available and when, and what longer-term plan matches your goals and risk tolerance. A liquid insured deposit account is a holding place, not a complete financial plan. Once those questions are resolved, you can deliberately pay obligations, distribute funds, invest, purchase property, or retain a reserve rather than making a rushed decision immediately after the inheritance.
