Where to Keep Cash You May Need to Invest Soon: Savings Accounts, Money Market Funds, and Treasury Bills

If you may need the money on an uncertain date, keep it in an FDIC-insured savings account (or another qualifying insured bank deposit) so access and principal protection are clear. A money market fund can suit investors who accept mutual-fund risks and business-day redemption rules. A Treasury bill is useful when you can match a known cash date to a 4- to 52-week maturity and can tolerate selling at a market price if plans change.

This guide applies to U.S. accounts and taxes. There is no universally best choice or reliable ranking by yield without a dated comparison of current rates, fees, and terms.

What matters when cash may be invested soon?

Short-term investment cash has a different job from long-term savings. You are protecting an opportunity to invest while preserving the ability to move quickly when the opportunity appears. Evaluate each holding on five questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Access: How soon can the money reach the account where you will invest, and what could delay a withdrawal or transfer?
  • Protection: Is the balance a bank deposit with applicable insurance, a mutual-fund share whose value can fluctuate, or a Treasury security backed by the U.S. government?
  • Yield mechanics: Does the return reset with short-term rates, depend on a fixed maturity, or change after fees?
  • Timing: Must you choose a maturity date, or can you redeem whenever the market is open?
  • Taxes: How is the return treated for federal, state, and local tax purposes?

Separate the word “money market” from the product behind it. A bank money market deposit account is a deposit account. A money market fund is a mutual fund. They do not carry the same insurance or operating rules.

Option How you access cash Protection and principal risk How return changes Timing requirement Tax points
FDIC-insured savings account Withdraw or transfer under the bank’s rules; timing, transfer limits, and holds are provider-specific. Deposit insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, subject to FDIC rules. The insured deposit balance does not fluctuate with securities markets. The bank sets the rate and can change it; fees and minimum-balance rules vary by account. No maturity date. Confirm transfer and settlement time before an investment deadline. Interest is generally reported as bank interest; the exact tax result depends on your circumstances.
Money market fund Shares are generally redeemable on demand on a business day, but your broker or fund can impose processing cutoffs and other terms. Mutual-fund shares are not FDIC-insured. A stable $1 net asset value (NAV) is not a government guarantee; the SEC describes possible repricing, liquidity fees, and permitted redemption suspensions in specified circumstances. Income usually follows short-term interest rates and changes over time. Government, prime, and tax-exempt funds hold different assets and follow different rules. No fixed maturity, but business-day redemption and settlement must fit your investment schedule. Tax treatment depends on the fund’s distributions and your jurisdiction; tax-exempt funds have specific eligibility and distribution rules.
Treasury bill Hold to maturity for the scheduled face-value payment, or sell through a market channel before maturity. Marketable U.S. government security backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, not FDIC insurance. Selling early exposes you to the market price at that time. The auction sets a fixed rate for that bill. You buy at a discount or at par and receive face value at maturity. Choose a 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26-, or 52-week term that matches a known cash date. Interest is taxable federally but exempt from state and local income taxes, according to TreasuryDirect.

Rates, fees, auction results, transfer times, and sweep terms change. Check the current offering and your account agreement when you are ready to act rather than using an undated yield comparison.

Where to keep cash you may need to invest soon?

Use an insured savings account when the date is uncertain

An account at an FDIC-insured bank is a deposit product. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation states that the standard maximum is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Coverage is calculated by ownership category, so balances at different banks or in different legal ownership structures are not automatically combined into one limit. Verify that the institution is FDIC-insured and that your balance, including accrued interest, fits the applicable limit.

A savings account has no maturity date. That is valuable when an investment opportunity might arise tomorrow or several months from now. You can leave the cash in place while the bank changes its rate, then transfer it when needed. The trade-off is that the account’s yield, withdrawal limits, transfer cutoffs, minimums, and fees are set by the provider. A transfer that appears immediate may still require a business day or more to settle, so read the account’s timing rules before promising funds to an investment account.

Do not confuse a bank money market account with a money market fund

A bank may call a deposit product a “money market account.” If it is a qualifying deposit at an FDIC-insured bank, it falls under the bank-deposit insurance framework, subject to the same ownership and coverage rules. A money market fund, by contrast, is a mutual fund and is not covered by FDIC insurance. The similar names describe different legal products.

Should I put cash in a savings account or money market fund?

How a money market fund works

A money market fund pools investor money to buy liquid short-term debt, cash, and cash equivalents. Its income generally moves with short-term interest rates, so the distribution you see today can differ later. The fund’s category matters:

  • Government money market funds: The SEC reported in 2024 that these funds must hold 99.5% or more of total assets in qualifying government securities, cash, or repurchase agreements.
  • Prime money market funds: These can hold a broader set of short-term instruments, including corporate and financial-sector obligations, with risks and liquidity characteristics that differ from government funds.
  • Tax-exempt money market funds: The SEC reported in 2024 that these funds invest at least 80% of assets in municipal securities, subject to the fund’s rules and tax disclosures.

Fund shares are generally redeemable on demand on a business day. “On demand” does not mean an instantaneous, guaranteed transfer to your bank or brokerage account. A fund and its intermediary can have a cutoff time, settlement cycle, or other operational requirement. The SEC also describes circumstances in which liquidity fees may apply, a stable-NAV fund could reprice below $1, and redemption suspension may be permitted. Those possibilities are why a money market fund should not be treated as a bank deposit or as free of investment risk.

When a money market fund can fit

Consider one when you already use a brokerage account, want a floating short-term-rate return, and can accept mutual-fund structure and business-day processing. Read the prospectus for the fund type, eligible investments, NAV method, fees, liquidity provisions, and settlement timing. Compare the net yield after expenses, not just a headline annualized figure, and check whether the broker charges transaction or account fees.

When a savings account is the cleaner choice

Prefer an insured savings deposit when preserving a known dollar amount and reliable access matters more than pursuing a potentially different short-term yield. It is also simpler when your balance is within applicable FDIC limits and you do not want to evaluate a fund’s holdings, NAV, or liquidity rules.

Are Treasury bills safe for short-term cash?

What you buy and how payment works

Treasury bills are short-term, marketable U.S. government securities issued electronically. TreasuryDirect lists terms of 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26, and 52 weeks. Bills are sold at a discount or at par. At maturity, the Treasury pays the bill’s face value; your return is the difference between what you paid and that face value. The auction fixes the interest rate for that specific bill.

TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum purchase. Bills from 4 through 26 weeks are auctioned weekly, while 52-week bills are auctioned every four weeks, according to the TreasuryDirect schedule. Treasury securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. That backing is different from FDIC deposit insurance: a Treasury bill is not an insured bank deposit.

Holding to maturity versus selling early

TreasuryDirect states, “We sell Treasury Bills (Bills) for terms ranging from four weeks to 52 weeks,” and, “You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.” Holding to maturity gives you the scheduled face-value payment, assuming the Treasury performs its obligation. Selling early is a market transaction: you receive the price available through your broker or other market channel, which can be higher or lower than your purchase price and is not the same as receiving face value at maturity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a bill only when the maturity date leaves enough time for the cash to settle and reach the investment you plan to make. If the opportunity date is uncertain, laddering several maturities can reduce the chance that all of the cash is locked until one date, but every rung still has a maturity and market-sale considerations.

Tax treatment

TreasuryDirect says bill interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income taxes. Keep the federal tax treatment in your cash-flow estimate; the state and local exemption can matter if you live in a jurisdiction with income tax. Tax rules for other accounts and funds can differ, so use the fund or bank’s tax documents and professional advice for your situation.

What happens to cash already sitting in a brokerage account?

A brokerage cash-sweep program may place uninvested cash in a bank deposit program, a money market fund, or leave it as a free credit balance. The default is not the same at every broker, and the yield, FDIC coverage, minimums, fees, and withdrawal terms can differ substantially.

The SEC advises investors to examine available sweep choices and the account agreement. Before relying on the cash for a near-term investment, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which option is the default and whether you can change it.
  • Whether the balance is a bank deposit, a fund share, or a free credit balance.
  • What protection applies, including the FDIC bank, ownership category, or absence of deposit insurance.
  • The current rate after fees and whether it resets with market rates.
  • Minimum balances, transaction charges, transfer cutoffs, and settlement timing.

A sweep that looks liquid on the screen may still require a transfer or settlement step before you can place the intended investment order.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down the earliest plausible investment date and the latest date. If you cannot narrow the window, treat the money as uncertain-date cash.
  2. Set the loss tolerance. If a dollar shortfall would force you to cancel the investment, favor an insured deposit or a Treasury bill held to maturity over a fund whose NAV or liquidity terms can change.
  3. Check account location and transfer mechanics. Confirm whether the cash is already at the investing brokerage, how long an external transfer takes, and whether orders require settled funds.
  4. Apply the protection limit. For bank deposits, map balances by depositor, insured bank, and ownership category against the $250,000 standard maximum. Do not count mutual funds or Treasury bills as FDIC-insured deposits.
  5. Match the product to the date. Choose a Treasury bill maturity only when the date is sufficiently predictable. Otherwise, use a no-maturity deposit or a fund whose redemption process you understand.
  6. Compare current net economics. Check the dated rate, expense ratio, account fees, transfer charges, and taxes. Do not compare an insured deposit’s quoted rate with a fund’s gross yield without accounting for these differences.
  7. Recheck before investing. Confirm the sweep setting, available balance, settlement status, and any changed terms on the day you place the investment order.

Examples of matching the option to the situation

The investment could appear any day

Keep the reserve in an FDIC-insured savings account if a missed opportunity or delayed transfer would be costly. A money market fund may work inside the brokerage account if you have reviewed its redemption cutoff, settlement, and liquidity provisions, but it does not provide FDIC insurance.

The investment date is about three months away

A 13-week Treasury bill can match the date if you can hold it through maturity and allow settlement time. Keep any amount that might be needed earlier in a liquid deposit or another arrangement you can access without selling the bill.

You have several possible dates over a year

Use a combination rather than locking all funds into one 52-week bill. Keep the uncertain portion liquid and consider staggered bill maturities for amounts tied to more predictable dates. Selling a bill early remains an option, but the sale price is determined by the market at that time.

Pitfalls that can derail a short-term investment plan

  • Assuming “money market” means insured: Identify whether the statement says money market deposit account or money market mutual fund.
  • Exceeding an insurance limit unknowingly: Aggregate deposits by insured bank and ownership category, not just by brand or app interface.
  • Buying a bill with the wrong maturity: A 26-week bill is not a substitute for cash needed next month unless you are prepared to sell it at a market price.
  • Ignoring settlement: Redemption, transfer, and securities settlement schedules can make displayed cash unavailable for an order placed immediately.
  • Comparing stale rates: Savings rates, fund yields, and Treasury auction rates change. Use quotes and disclosures dated close to your decision.
  • Overlooking taxes and fees: Include federal tax on Treasury bill interest, fund expenses, account charges, and any transfer cost when estimating usable return.
