Zavvi is no longer a working option for online orders. A notice from the Joint Administrators of ZavviGroup Ltd says the company ceased trading with immediate effect after their appointment on 12 October 2026. The notice says outstanding orders and pre-orders cannot be fulfilled, new orders should not be placed, and returns cannot be accepted. If you paid for goods that were not delivered, contact your bank, card issuer or payment provider promptly to ask about possible recovery routes.
For new purchases, match the retailer to what you need: HMV or Rarewaves for physical films, ShopTo for games and consoles, and Forbidden Planet for franchise merchandise, comics and genre books. None should be treated as automatically cheapest, fastest or most reliable. Compare the exact edition, stock status, delivered total and terms on the live listing before paying.

Zavvi’s status and what existing customers should do
The current website notice from ZavviGroup Ltd’s Joint Administrators records an appointment date of 12 October 2026 and says the company “has ceased trading with immediate effect.” It also states: “The Company is unable to fulfil any outstanding orders or pre-orders. Customers should not place any new orders through the Company’s website.” The notice says the administrators cannot accept returns.
That changes the shopping question. Zavvi should not be presented as an alternative retailer, and a listing that still appears in a search result is not evidence that an order can be completed. Do not place a new order or send a return to the company while that notice remains in force.
#1 Best Overall
If you are waiting for an order
Gather the order confirmation, payment date, amount, promised dispatch or release date and any correspondence. Then contact the bank, card issuer or payment provider used for the transaction and ask what recovery routes may be available for goods that were not delivered. The administrators’ notice directs customers to those providers; the provider will explain which process applies to your payment method and circumstances.
If you have a pre-order
Treat it as unfulfilled rather than assuming a delayed release will ship later. Save evidence of the pre-order and ask your payment provider about recovery options. If the same film, game or collectible is still wanted, make a separate purchase from a currently trading retailer only after checking its present price, edition and release terms.

Buying films: HMV and Rarewaves
HMV for physical film formats and selected pre-orders
HMV’s catalogue covers 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, SteelBooks and pre-orders. Its listings include releases from labels such as Arrow Video, Criterion, Eureka and 88 Films, so it can be useful when you need a particular restoration, label edition or premium steelbook rather than simply any copy of a film.
Search by the film title, then read the product heading and specification carefully. A title may have separate listings for 4K UHD, standard Blu-ray and DVD, and a SteelBook may differ from the regular case edition even when the disc content is similar. Check whether the page says the item is available now or is a pre-order, and note the stated release date. Compare the delivered total rather than the headline item price.

Rarewaves for films, offers and pre-orders
Rarewaves lists film pre-orders and 4K UHD products alongside other entertainment categories. Its UK-facing site currently advertises free UK delivery on orders over £10. That threshold is a changeable offer, so verify that it still applies to your basket and destination at checkout; do not build a budget around it until the checkout page confirms the terms.
Rarewaves’ marketplace-style range means availability can vary by channel and product. A category page or search result is not proof that every edition is in stock. Open the exact listing, confirm the format and seller information shown there, and check the estimated dispatch or release timing before paying.

- Identify the format. Decide whether you need 4K UHD, Blu-ray or DVD. If a listing mentions a digital code, verify whether the physical disc is included and whether the code is usable in your region.
- Identify the edition. Compare standard cases, SteelBooks, collector packaging and label releases. Product photographs alone are not enough; read the edition description.
- Check stock and date. “Pre-order” means the item has not been released for dispatch. Record the stated date and any dispatch wording.
- Add delivery. Include the delivery charge and any spend threshold for a free-delivery offer. The total at checkout is the figure to compare.
- Keep confirmation. Save the order number, listing title and promised timing in case you need to query a delay or payment issue.
Buying games and consoles: ShopTo and HMV online
ShopTo for game and console purchases
ShopTo is identified as a destination for games, consoles and accessories. Use the platform filter first: a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or PC listing is not interchangeable, and a “deluxe” or “ultimate” edition can contain different physical items or download entitlements from the standard release.
Check whether the product is physical or digital, the release date, the retailer’s dispatch wording and the complete delivered cost. For a console bundle, confirm every component named in the specification, such as the console model, storage capacity, controller count and included game. Keep the product page and confirmation because bundle contents can matter more than a small headline-price difference.
HMV’s online games and consoles service
HMV says games and consoles are available through hmv.com rather than for direct purchase in its high-street stores. A store can arrange a console order using the hmv Delivers service. That distinction matters if you are budgeting around a store visit: seeing a shop display does not establish that the item can be taken away immediately.
Rank #3
For an HMV game or console order, check the platform, edition, stock status, release or dispatch date and current returns terms on the online listing. If you arrange a console through a store, ask how the delivery and collection arrangements are recorded so you retain a clear order reference.
Pre-order controls for games
- Write down the announced release date and leave room in your budget for a date change.
- Check when payment is taken under the retailer’s current terms rather than assuming it happens on dispatch.
- Compare the physical edition with any digital version; storage, resale and download requirements differ.
- For a console, price the required accessories and games separately before deciding that a bundle is cheaper.
Buying figures, toys and licensed collectibles
Forbidden Planet for franchise merchandise and genre items
Forbidden Planet’s official description covers merchandise, figures, toys and collectibles across film and television franchises. It also carries comics, graphic novels, manga and genre books. This breadth is useful when you are looking for a specific character, publisher or series rather than a general gift.
Search for the exact character or title and inspect the item’s edition, scale or format, manufacturer information and stock status. Limited, exclusive or numbered wording should be treated as a product description to verify, not as proof of future value. Buy because the item meets your collecting goal; no evidence here establishes resale performance or investment returns.
International delivery from Forbidden Planet
Forbidden Planet says international orders receive a shipping quote after the order is placed, and that the customer must respond to the quote before billing proceeds. If you are outside the UK, obtain and accept that quote before assuming the order is complete. Include the quoted shipping amount and any destination charges you may owe when comparing with another retailer.
Rarewaves for toys and collectibles
Rarewaves lists toys and collectibles as well as films and games. Confirm the exact item and the channel selling it, because the company states that marketplace sales do not guarantee every product is available on every channel. Check stock, dispatch timing, delivery charge and the total shown for your destination.
Rank #4
Buying comics, graphic novels, manga and books
Forbidden Planet is the clearest match among these options for comics, graphic novels, manga and genre books. Search by title and edition: a collected volume, a single issue and a special cover can have different prices and release dates. Availability shown for one format does not establish availability for another.
For an international order, follow the retailer’s shipping-quote process before treating the purchase as final. For UK delivery, still check the charge and expected dispatch date, particularly for pre-release books or items listed as temporarily unavailable.
How to compare the real cost
The item price is only one part of the decision. Use this checklist for every retailer and every format.
- Start with the exact item. Record the title, platform or format, edition and quantity. Do not compare a standard Blu-ray with a 4K SteelBook or a base console with a bundle.
- Check live stock. A category page, search snippet or old bookmark can remain visible after stock changes. The product page and checkout status are more useful indicators.
- Add delivery. Include the stated fee, any free-delivery minimum and, for international orders, the quoted shipping amount. Rarewaves’ advertised UK free-delivery threshold is currently £10 but can change.
- Allow for destination costs. International buyers should ask how taxes, duties or carrier charges are handled when the retailer does not show a complete landed total. Do not assume a UK item price is the final amount abroad.
- Check timing. Separate “in stock,” “dispatches by,” “pre-order” and “release date.” A cheaper pre-order is not equivalent to an item available now.
- Read current terms. Review payment timing, cancellation, returns and damaged-item instructions before submitting an order.
- Save evidence. Keep the listing, checkout total, order confirmation and promised date. These records are useful if the item is delayed, cancelled or materially different from the description.
What the UK physical-film market tells you
The Film Distributors’ Association 2025 yearbook reports UK 2024 sales of £82 million for Blu-ray and 4K UHD, up 5% from 2023. It also reports £75 million in DVD sales and says Blu-ray/4K UHD sales exceeded traditional DVD for the first time. These are historical UK sales figures for the reporting year, not a forecast and not evidence that one retailer has the lowest price or greatest stock.
For a shopper, the practical implication is format choice: 4K UHD and Blu-ray listings deserve the same careful edition check as DVD listings. A higher-resolution format may require compatible playback equipment, while a SteelBook or label edition can change the price without changing the film itself.
Best Value

- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Making a safe purchase decision
Use a two-column comparison
For each candidate listing, write down the exact edition and the checkout total on one side, then delivery timing and the retailer’s current terms on the other. This prevents a low item price from hiding a delivery fee or a long pre-order wait.
Separate want-to-own from want-to-watch
If your goal is simply to watch a film, a premium physical edition may not be necessary. If you collect label releases, SteelBooks or franchise figures, the edition details are central. Decide that priority before comparing prices so that you do not pay extra for packaging you did not want or buy a cheaper format you cannot use.
Be cautious with scarcity language
“Exclusive,” “limited” and “last chance” can describe a retailer’s current stock position, but they do not establish future value. Confirm what is actually included and set a maximum budget before checkout, especially for collectibles and numbered editions.

Quick routes by shopping mission
| If you need | Start by checking | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A new 4K UHD or Blu-ray edition | HMV and Rarewaves | Both list physical film formats, including 4K UHD; HMV also lists SteelBooks and label releases. |
| A DVD or SteelBook pre-order | HMV, then Rarewaves | Both publish film pre-orders; compare the exact release and checkout terms. |
| A game, console or accessory | ShopTo and HMV online | Both are documented sources for games and consoles, with HMV directing these purchases to hmv.com. |
| A film or television figure | Forbidden Planet and Rarewaves | Both list toys or collectibles; verify the precise franchise item and stock. |
| A comic, manga or graphic novel | Forbidden Planet | Its catalogue covers these categories; international buyers should obtain the shipping quote before billing. |
Final checks before you click “buy”
- Is the retailer currently trading and accepting orders?
- Does the listing name the exact format, platform, edition or collectible?
- Is it in stock, a pre-order or awaiting a release date?
- What is the complete delivered total for your destination?
- When is payment taken, and what do the current cancellation and returns terms say?
- Have you saved the confirmation and promised dispatch or release date?
After Zavvi’s October 2026 collapse, the safest replacement is not one universal shop. It is a deliberate match between item and specialist, followed by a live check of stock, edition, delivery and payment terms. HMV and Rarewaves cover much of the physical-film market; ShopTo and HMV online cover games and consoles; Forbidden Planet is the strongest fit for comics and franchise collectibles. Verify every listing at checkout because prices, promotions, availability and shipping conditions can change.
