An airline website sells its own flights. An online travel agency (OTA) sells tickets as an intermediary. A metasearch service compares offers and then identifies the airline or agency that will take your payment and service the booking. Before paying, confirm the named ticket seller, the complete fare conditions, and who you must contact for changes, cancellations, or refunds.
What each online flight-booking option actually is
These channels can show similar itineraries, but they do not play the same role in the transaction. The distinction matters most after you have paid, when a schedule change, cancellation, missed connection, or refund request requires a specific company to act.

| Channel | What you do there | Who normally issues or services the ticket | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airline website | Buy a fare directly from the carrier operating or marketing the flight. | The airline named in the checkout and confirmation. | You already know the carrier, or want the airline to be your direct seller. |
| Online travel agency (OTA) | Purchase through an intermediary that displays and sells airfares. | The OTA or another named ticket provider shown before payment. | You need an agency’s inventory, packaging, or comparison of several carriers. |
| Metasearch | Search and compare offers, then proceed with the provider shown for the selected result. | The airline or OTA that completes the transaction; in some cases the transaction can finish within the metasearch interface. | Discovering a wide range of schedules and prices quickly. |
A search result is not proof that the search service is the seller. KAYAK’s terms put it plainly: “When you book, you book with the Travel Provider.” KAYAK says that provider sets the price and fees and handles confirmation, modifications, cancellations, and refunds.
Booking directly on an airline website
On an airline’s own site, you select a flight, enter passenger details, choose any available extras, and pay the carrier. The confirmation should identify the airline as the ticket seller, although a marketed flight can still be operated by a partner carrier under a codeshare.

Why travelers choose this path
- The seller is usually clear from the start: the airline’s name appears throughout search, checkout, and confirmation.
- You can review that carrier’s fare family, baggage rules, seat terms, and loyalty conditions in one place.
- If the airline cancels or retimes the flight, you begin with the company that issued the ticket rather than tracing a third-party reservation.
Direct booking is not a universal guarantee of the lowest fare, better support, or more generous rules. Compare the actual fare and conditions against other channels for the same itinerary. A direct airline page can also show only that carrier’s inventory, so it may not reveal a better schedule on another airline.
Using an online travel agency
An OTA is an intermediary: you buy through the agency rather than directly from the airline’s checkout. The agency may combine flights from multiple carriers, apply its own service terms, or present several fare families. The important question is not whether an agency is “cheap,” but exactly what you are buying and who will service it.
What to verify before an OTA purchase
- Named seller: Identify the merchant or ticket provider displayed immediately before payment and in the confirmation email.
- Fare rules: Read whether changes, cancellations, or no-shows are permitted and what fees apply.
- Support route: Note the agency’s contact method and hours, and whether the airline will recognize the reservation directly.
- Ticketing status: Distinguish a temporary reservation or “booking received” message from an issued ticket number.
Two agencies can display the same flight while attaching different service fees, payment conditions, or after-sales processes. Do not assume every OTA fare is cheaper than the airline’s price or that an airline will handle an agency-issued ticket without involving the agency.

How metasearch services work
Metasearch sites gather flight offers so you can compare schedules and prices in one interface. KAYAK describes its role as searching and comparing travel options and connecting travelers to airlines and OTAs. After you choose an offer, the booking flow identifies the provider responsible for the transaction. KAYAK notes that some partner bookings can be completed without leaving its site, so check the provider attached to the final checkout rather than assuming every result is an outbound click.
Google Flights says it works with more than 300 airlines, OTAs, and aggregators. That broad coverage is useful for discovery, but Google does not necessarily issue your ticket. A displayed combination may involve multiple airlines or an interline arrangement; the details page and the provider’s checkout determine what you are actually purchasing.
What metasearch is good at
- Scanning many carriers, dates, airports, and connection patterns quickly.
- Exposing price differences between an airline checkout and one or more agencies.
- Highlighting flexible-date or nearby-airport options before you commit to a seller.
What it does not settle for you
- Whether a fare includes a checked bag, seat assignment, or other optional service.
- Whether the itinerary is one protected ticket or separate self-transfer reservations.
- Which company must process a refund or itinerary change after purchase.
Who handles your booking after payment?
Servicing follows the booking provider that issued the ticket. KAYAK’s booking help explains that the selected provider determines the costs and process for changes or refunds. Your confirmation email, receipt, and e-ticket should therefore be treated as operational documents, not just proof of payment.

Find these details in your confirmation
- The legal or trading name of the ticket seller.
- The airline reservation code (often called a record locator) and the e-ticket number, if issued.
- A customer-service phone number or online support path for the seller.
- The fare basis or branded fare name and the rules for changes, cancellation, and no-show.
If an airline cancels a flight bought through an OTA, start with the OTA or other merchant of record shown on your ticket. The airline may still help with airport-day logistics, but the seller generally controls rebooking and refund processing under its contract and the fare rules.

Compare equivalent offers, not headline prices
A fair comparison uses the same flights and the same conditions. Follow this sequence before choosing a checkout button.
- Match the itinerary. Check departure and arrival airports, dates, flight numbers, connection airports, total travel time, and whether a connection is self-transfer.
- Match the ticket structure. Confirm that each option is one ticket or understand exactly how multiple tickets interact. Separate tickets can require you to collect and recheck bags and may leave you responsible for a missed onward flight.
- Price the required extras. Add baggage, seat selection, payment charges, and any mandatory service fees that apply to your trip. A low base fare is not comparable if another option already includes a checked bag.
- Read change and refund terms. Record whether changes are allowed, the fee, any fare difference, and whether a refund is cash, credit, or unavailable for voluntary cancellation.
- Identify the seller. Write down the airline, OTA, or other provider named at checkout. That is the party to contact later.
- Recheck at payment. Prices and inventory can change between search and checkout. Confirm the final total, passenger names, dates, and conditions on the payment screen.
One ticket, codeshares, and self-transfers
“Direct” can mean direct to the airline website, not nonstop. An airline site may sell a codeshare operated by a partner. Look for an “operated by” note and verify baggage handoff, check-in responsibility, and disruption handling.

Metasearch results can also combine airlines. A single reservation with an interline relationship may provide coordinated ticketing, while separate reservations create a self-transfer. Treat the latter as a different product: allow time to exit immigration, collect bags, check in again, and meet the next carrier’s cutoff. Do not infer protection from the fact that both segments appeared in one search result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.U.S. airfare and refund rules: what they cover
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Buying a Ticket” guidance applies to travel to, from, or within the United States. It says an advertised airfare must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. Optional items—such as checked bags, seat selection, or other add-ons—are not automatically included in that displayed fare.
DOT’s “Refunds” guidance says a ticket agent that is the merchant of record must provide the proper airfare refund when an airline cancels or significantly changes a flight to, from, or within the United States. This is not a worldwide rule, and it does not promise a cash refund for every voluntary change or cancellation. Your fare terms and the applicable jurisdiction still matter.

A practical decision framework
Choose an airline site when
- You have selected a carrier and its fare is competitive after adding required extras.
- The itinerary is complicated enough that you want one airline’s rules and contact path.
- You value direct access to the carrier’s reservation system and loyalty account.
Choose an OTA when
- Its final, like-for-like price is lower after all fees and baggage costs.
- It offers an itinerary unavailable on the airline’s own site.
- You have read its change, cancellation, and support terms and accept the intermediary role.
Use metasearch first when
- You need to scan many carriers, airports, or travel dates.
- You want to compare the airline’s checkout with one or more agency offers.
- You are comfortable moving from discovery to a separately identified ticket seller.
Step-by-step booking workflow
- Search broadly. Enter exact passenger count, cabin, dates, and airports on a metasearch service or airline site.
- Filter for a workable trip. Remove overnight or self-transfer options you cannot realistically manage.
- Open the fare details. Check baggage, seats, changes, refunds, and the number of tickets.
- Compare the seller pages. Open the airline and agency versions of the same itinerary when available and record the final totals.
- Confirm the provider. On the payment page, verify the merchant name, currency, contact details, and ticketing timeline.
- Pay and save evidence. Keep the receipt, e-ticket number, fare rules, and a screenshot or PDF of the final conditions.
- Verify issuance. Use the airline’s manage-booking tool when possible, but retain the provider’s support details because the seller may still control changes and refunds.
Common problems and how to respond
The price rises at checkout
Inventory and fares can change between search and payment. Recheck the exact itinerary on the airline site and at least one other provider. If the total no longer fits your budget, restart the comparison rather than assuming the first price will return.
You cannot find the reservation on the airline site
Confirm that the agency has issued a ticket, not merely captured a request. Try the airline record locator and passenger surname exactly as shown. If it still fails, contact the named seller and request the e-ticket number and the airline confirmation code.
The airline cancels or significantly changes the flight
Locate the merchant of record on your confirmation and contact that provider for the available rebooking or refund process. For U.S.-connected travel, the DOT refund rule may apply when the statutory conditions are met; it does not automatically govern trips with no U.S. connection.
You want to cancel voluntarily
Read the fare rule before contacting support. A voluntary cancellation can be nonrefundable, subject to a fee, or eligible only for credit. The provider may also charge its own service fee in addition to the airline’s rule.
Final pre-payment checklist
- Are the airports, dates, flight numbers, and connection times correct?
- Is this one ticket, a codeshare, or separate self-transfer bookings?
- What baggage and seat costs must be added?
- Who is the named seller and who will handle a change or refund?
- What happens if you cancel voluntarily or miss a segment?
- Does the final checkout total match your comparison?
- Have you saved the confirmation, e-ticket number, fare rules, and support contact?
Bottom line
Use metasearch to discover and compare, then judge the actual airline or OTA checkout on equal itinerary and fare terms. Book directly with an airline when its offer and service path suit you; use an OTA only after accepting its intermediary role. The decisive detail is always the provider named on the ticket: that is where your post-purchase questions, changes, cancellations, and refund requests begin.
