Where Retirees Can Keep Cash for Income and Access

Retirees generally need more than one place for cash. Keep money needed for near-term bills in an immediately accessible, qualifying bank deposit; consider time deposits or Treasury securities only for money whose timing is more predictable. The right mix depends on when the money will be spent, how much access is required, what protection applies, and whether the interest rate can change.

Savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit and Treasury securities are different products. Comparing their access rules, protections, rates and terms is more useful than choosing solely by the highest advertised yield.

Start with the spending date, not the advertised rate

Separate cash by when you expect to use it. Money for rent, utilities, medical bills, taxes and other expenses due soon should remain in an account that permits the withdrawals and transfers you actually need. Cash with a later, reasonably predictable use can potentially earn a defined rate in a time deposit or security held to maturity. Money that is not truly cash may have price risk or different access rules.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Savings Fitness guide identifies savings accounts, money market mutual funds, CDs and U.S. securities as possible savings vehicles and says a low-risk strategy is more prudent for people nearing retirement who will depend on investment income. That is general education, not an individualized reserve size or asset-allocation recommendation.

How the main cash options differ

Savings accounts

A savings account is a bank deposit designed for storing money and making withdrawals or transfers under the bank’s rules. At an FDIC-insured bank, a qualifying savings deposit is automatically covered by FDIC insurance within the applicable limits. The interest rate is generally variable, so the bank can change it. Check the current account agreement for minimum balances, fees, transaction limits and transfer timing before moving retirement cash.

Money market deposit accounts

A money market deposit account is also a bank deposit. It may offer deposit access features such as transfers or check writing, but the exact features and limits are institution-specific. When held at an FDIC-insured bank, it can qualify for FDIC coverage subject to the insurance rules. Its rate can change, so an account paying more today may not pay more later.

Money market mutual funds

A money market mutual fund is an investment, not a bank account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau states: “A money market mutual fund is considered an investment, and it is not a savings or checking account, even though some money market funds allow you to write checks.” Read the CFPB’s explanation of a money market account at consumerfinance.gov.

Because a fund is not a qualifying bank deposit, FDIC deposit insurance does not apply to the fund itself. A fund may provide convenient access through its provider, but the applicable settlement, check-writing, balance and transaction rules come from the fund and account agreement. Do not assume that similar names mean identical protections.

Certificates of deposit

A certificate of deposit is a time deposit. You agree to leave money with the institution for a stated term in exchange for the institution’s stated rate. The maturity date matters: money needed before maturity may be subject to an early-withdrawal penalty or other restriction. The official material reviewed here does not establish current terms for any particular CD, so read the bank’s disclosure for the penalty, renewal instructions, maturity notice and withdrawal process before committing funds.

A CD at an FDIC-insured bank can qualify for FDIC insurance within the applicable limits. Insurance does not remove the access trade-off: a deposit can be insured and still be inconvenient or costly to withdraw early.

Treasury bills, notes and bonds

Treasury securities are government securities, not bank accounts and not FDIC-insured deposits. Bills, notes and bonds have stated maturity structures and can be held for maturity or sold earlier. If you may need the money before maturity, access depends on the account used to hold the security and the sale or transfer process, including any market-price movement. Verify those mechanics with the current provider or Treasury documentation.

The general limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, as explained in the FDIC’s Deposit Insurance At A Glance.

Deposits in the same ownership category at one bank are aggregated for the limit. Opening several accounts at the same bank does not automatically multiply coverage. To evaluate coverage, identify the legal owner, the bank and the ownership category for every deposit, then total deposits that fall into the same category. If a balance could exceed the applicable limit, ask the bank or FDIC how the account is categorized before depositing additional cash.

FDIC insurance applies to qualifying deposits, not to every product offered by a bank or brokerage. A money market mutual fund remains an investment even if its provider is affiliated with a bank or permits check writing. Treasury securities have their own government-security status and should not be described as FDIC-insured accounts.

Use rate data carefully

The FDIC’s national-rate table dated March 16, 2026, reported these averages: savings accounts, 0.39%; money market deposit accounts, 0.56%; six-month CDs, 1.47%; and 12-month CDs, 1.52%. The table is available at FDIC National Rates and Rate Caps.

Those figures are dated national averages in an FDIC rate-cap table. They are not live offers, a ranking of the best accounts, or guaranteed returns. Actual yields, compounding, minimums, fees and withdrawal conditions vary by institution and can change. If you publish or use a rate after March 2026, check for a newer FDIC release and the provider’s current disclosure. Compare the annual percentage yield only after confirming the balance and activity requirements needed to receive it.

A practical process for organizing retirement cash

  1. List the cash uses and dates. Write down recurring bills, known annual expenses and irregular costs such as insurance premiums, property taxes or planned repairs. Mark which amounts might be needed without warning.
  2. Set an access tier. Keep the most time-sensitive spending in a bank account whose transfer and withdrawal methods you understand. Do not place emergency money in a product that requires a maturity date, a sale or an early-withdrawal decision.
  3. Check protection before yield. For each proposed account, confirm whether it is a deposit at an FDIC-insured bank, an investment fund or a Treasury security. Record the bank, ownership category and combined balance when evaluating the $250,000-per-depositor limit.
  4. Match the term to the spending date. A CD or Treasury security may suit money with a known later use, but its maturity should not collide with an uncertain bill. If timing is uncertain, value flexibility more heavily than a small rate difference.
  5. Read the complete disclosure. Verify minimum balance, monthly or activity fees, transfer limits, check-writing rules, early-withdrawal penalties, maturity and renewal procedures, statement access and how to contact the institution. These details were not established for any specific provider and must be checked directly.
  6. Test access before committing more money. Make a small transfer, confirm how long it takes to arrive, and verify that the account can connect to the checking account used for bills. Provider procedures, cutoff times and settlement can affect practical access.
  7. Schedule reviews. Recheck balances, upcoming maturities, rates and insurance categories when spending changes, a CD matures or an institution changes its terms. A variable-rate account may need a new comparison even when the account itself has not changed.

Questions to ask when comparing accounts

  • Is this a bank deposit, a mutual fund investment or a Treasury security?
  • If it is a deposit, is the bank FDIC-insured and how is the balance counted within my ownership category?
  • Can I withdraw or transfer the exact amount I may need, and what are the cutoff times or transaction limits?
  • Is the quoted rate variable or fixed, and what date and conditions apply to the quote?
  • What minimum balance, monthly fee or activity requirement affects the actual return?
  • For a CD, what is the maturity date, what happens at maturity and what does early withdrawal cost?
  • For a fund or Treasury security, how do checks, sales, transfers and settlement work in the account I will use?
  • How will I receive statements, tax documents and maturity notices, and who handles an access problem?

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Treating every “money market” product as a deposit

The phrase can describe a bank money market deposit account or a money market mutual fund. Correct the mistake by reading the account title and disclosure, then identify whether the balance is a qualifying deposit or an investment.

Assuming several accounts create several insurance limits

Multiple deposits in the same ownership category at one insured bank are combined for the FDIC limit. Before adding accounts, total the category rather than counting account numbers.

Locking up money needed for an uncertain expense

A CD can impose an early-withdrawal cost or delay access until maturity. Keep uncertain or near-term spending in the access tier and reserve time deposits for money with a dependable timetable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an old or national-average rate as a promise

Rates move, and an average is not an offer. Date every rate comparison and confirm the provider’s current APY, balance conditions and fees before acting.

Calling Treasury securities “insured savings”

Treasury bills, notes and bonds are government securities, not FDIC-insured bank deposits. Describe their protection separately and account for the consequences of selling before maturity.

Choosing a product before mapping cash flow

A higher rate cannot compensate for missed bills, a penalty or an access process that does not work when needed. Build the spending calendar first, then select products for each time horizon.

An illustrative way to think about the tiers

Consider a retiree with three different needs: bills that must be paid this month, a known expense several months away and money that is not expected to be spent until a later date. The first need points toward an accessible bank deposit. The second might fit a deposit or security whose maturity and access terms match the expense. The third can be evaluated for a longer term, while still accounting for the possibility that plans change.

This example is a decision framework, not a recommended percentage or number of months of expenses. The appropriate amounts depend on income sources, health and housing costs, insurance, debt, taxes, portfolio withdrawals and other personal facts that are not established here.

When to seek additional help

Ask the bank for written insurance and ownership information when balances approach an insurance limit or accounts have complex ownership. A qualified financial or tax professional can help coordinate cash with a broader retirement-income plan, especially when withdrawals, required distributions, estate ownership or securities sales are involved. The product comparison itself does not determine an individualized withdrawal order or asset allocation.
