Amazon Web Services was still recruiting in large numbers after cutting several hundred roles during the week of April 1–5, 2024. The reductions mainly affected selected sales, marketing, global services, training, and physical-stores-technology teams, while job postings remained concentrated in infrastructure, operations, software development, support engineering, solutions architecture, and related cloud functions.
This is a historical explainer: “this week” refers to the week ending April 5, 2024, not the current week in 2026.

The apparent contradiction: layoffs alongside thousands of vacancies
Layoffs and hiring can happen at the same company at the same time. A reduction in one organization does not necessarily mean a hiring freeze across every team. Companies may eliminate roles with lower demand, reorganize functions, replace selected positions, or redirect investment toward different skills.
That was the pattern reported at AWS in April 2024. Amazon said the cuts did not represent a complete hiring freeze and that it continued recruiting for core parts of its cloud business. The available reporting described a targeted reorganization—not a company-wide elimination of AWS jobs. (Associated Press)

Which AWS teams were affected?
Amazon eliminated several hundred roles, with reported reductions concentrated in:
- AWS sales
- Marketing
- Global services
- Training
- Physical-stores technology
The evidence does not support describing the event as a blanket elimination of “hundreds of engineering jobs.” Nor should every technical worker be assumed to have been protected. The more defensible description is that selected AWS business and customer-facing organizations were affected, while other parts of AWS continued to recruit.
Where AWS was still hiring on April 5, 2024
GeekWire counted approximately 3,770 AWS job postings globally on April 5, 2024. Those were job-board postings, not an official Amazon headcount plan or a guarantee that every listed requisition would be filled.

The composition suggested that AWS was reallocating hiring toward the capabilities needed to operate, expand and implement cloud infrastructure. That is an inference from the posting mix, not a formal Amazon statement that these categories were protected.
The main hiring areas for applicants
Infrastructure, operations and support engineering
This was the largest category in the 2024 snapshot. Roles could involve reliability, networking, systems administration, incident response, technical support, hardware deployment and data-center operations.

AWS data-center careers also include construction, electrical and mechanical work, plumbing, HVAC, fiber optics, logistics, security and infrastructure delivery. These jobs can provide alternatives to conventional software engineering, but many are site-specific, on-site or shift-based. (AWS data-center careers)
Software and systems development
Software-development postings were the second-largest group. Relevant work includes distributed systems, databases, infrastructure services and AI-related products. Systems-development engineering may suit candidates with experience in automation, operating systems, networking or large-scale production environments.

Solutions architects translate customer requirements into AWS designs. The work can span infrastructure, security, data, analytics, application modernization and AI. It is technical and customer-facing, making it a better fit for experienced technologists who enjoy explaining trade-offs than for applicants seeking purely hands-on coding roles. (AWS careers hub)
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and data
AWS’s current recruiting material highlights generative AI and machine-learning careers, including model training and inference, data engineering, analytics, machine-learning infrastructure, AI solution architecture and customer enablement.
That material supports the conclusion that AI is a strategic recruiting area. It does not establish a precise number of AI openings, a guaranteed hiring target or protection from future reductions.

Security and public-sector work
AWS promotes secure-cloud and public-sector opportunities, including roles supporting government customers. Depending on the requisition, applicants may need a security clearance, citizenship, residency or other eligibility. Read the individual job description carefully rather than assuming that all public-sector roles have identical requirements.
Professional services, support and global services
AWS Global Services includes training and certification, professional services, support and managed services, security, products and solutions, and partner initiatives. These areas remain relevant to customer adoption, but they should not be described as untouched: the April 2024 reporting specifically identified reductions in related organizations.
Where the jobs were located
AWS recruiting has historically included major U.S. hubs such as Seattle and Bellevue, Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., area, along with other engineering, sales and data-center locations. International hiring has included hubs across Europe, India, Canada, Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
Location counts require caution. A large number of listings in one area may reflect multiple shifts at a data center, a construction or infrastructure expansion, local posting rules, duplicate location listings or evergreen requisitions. Do not infer strategic importance from a raw city count alone.
Use the AWS careers page and individual Amazon Jobs requisitions to filter by team, location, job category, keyword, clearance and early-career status. Verify the job ID, employing organization, location, posting date and application button before relying on a listing.

What “still hiring” does—and does not—mean
Important caution for applicants
- A job posting is not a guarantee that the role will be filled.
- A requisition can be paused, canceled or filled before its page disappears.
- One job may appear in multiple locations.
- The AWS category includes different organizations and types of work.
- Hiring in a function does not make that team immune from future layoffs.
- During a workforce reduction, internal applicants may receive priority over external candidates.
Posting totals show demand for particular skills at a point in time. They do not show net employment growth. Some openings are replacement hires, some represent internal transfers, and some may be duplicated or stale.
How to evaluate an AWS opening
- Confirm the requisition. Record the job title, job ID, organization, location and posting or update date.
- Check the requirements. Look for experience expectations, work authorization, clearance requirements and education criteria.
- Assess the work arrangement. Data-center and operations roles may require on-site work, shifts or on-call duties; remote eligibility varies by job.
- Match the role to your skills. Engineering, architecture, AI, public-sector, support and sales roles have different technical and customer-facing demands.
- Apply through the official source. Use Amazon Jobs or AWS Careers rather than relying on an aggregator’s cached copy.
2025 and 2026 context
Amazon later announced broader workforce reductions, including approximately 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025 and approximately 16,000 roles in January 2026, while also saying it would continue hiring in strategic areas. Those announcements are separate from the AWS-specific April 2024 cuts and should not be merged into that chronology. (Amazon’s 2025 announcement; Amazon’s January 2026 announcement)
AWS category pages crawled in 2026 displayed roughly 7,600–7,700 jobs, depending on the regional page and crawl date. That figure is not directly comparable with GeekWire’s April 2024 count without the same methodology. It may include duplicates, replacement roles and listings that change quickly.
The bottom line
AWS’s April 2024 layoffs were targeted reductions affecting selected sales, marketing, global-services, training and physical-stores-technology roles—not proof that every AWS organization was shrinking. At the same time, the job-board snapshot showed substantial recruitment in operations, infrastructure, software, support engineering, solutions architecture and related technical functions.
