Polestar cars are made in more than one country. Depending on the model and market, production has taken place in China, the United States and, through manufacturing partnerships, is planned or being expanded in other locations.

The brand is Swedish in origin and design identity, but it is not an independent automaker in the same sense as a privately controlled standalone manufacturer. Polestar is a publicly traded company whose largest strategic backer is Geely, the Chinese automotive group associated with Volvo Cars and other brands.

Where are Polestar cars made?

Polestar production is model-specific. The main assembly locations have included factories in China, while the Polestar 3 is also produced in the United States for some markets.

Model Known production location Important qualification
Polestar 1 Chengdu, China Limited-production plug-in hybrid coupe; production has ended.
Polestar 2 Luqiao, China; additional production has been arranged for some markets Country of assembly can vary by market and model year.
Polestar 3 Chengdu, China, and Ridgeville, South Carolina, United States U.S. production supports the North American market; exact sourcing can change.
Polestar 4 Hangzhou Bay, China Production is based at a Geely manufacturing facility.

These locations describe vehicle assembly, not every part’s origin. Batteries, electric motors, software, body panels and other components can come from different suppliers and countries.

China: the brand’s main manufacturing base

China has been Polestar’s primary production base since the brand began selling its own vehicles. The company uses manufacturing facilities connected to Geely and Volvo’s broader industrial network rather than operating a completely separate Polestar factory for every model.

Chengdu

The Polestar 1 was assembled at a specialized plant in Chengdu. It was a low-volume grand-tourer built with a carbon-fiber body and plug-in hybrid powertrain, and production ended after the planned run.

Chengdu has also been associated with production of the Polestar 3. The SUV was initially built in China, with production later added at Volvo Cars’ Ridgeville, South Carolina, facility for North American deliveries.

Luqiao

The Polestar 2 has been built at the Luqiao manufacturing facility in Zhejiang province. The plant is operated within the Volvo Cars and Geely manufacturing network. That arrangement is one reason the Polestar 2 shares technology and industrial infrastructure with products from the wider Geely group.

Hangzhou Bay

The Polestar 4 is assembled at a Geely facility in the Hangzhou Bay area. The electric SUV-coupe uses the group’s wider electric-vehicle engineering and manufacturing resources, but it remains a Polestar-branded vehicle.

Is the Polestar 3 made in the United States?

Yes, some Polestar 3 vehicles are built in the United States. Production takes place at Volvo Cars’ plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The facility also produces Volvo vehicles, so it is not a factory owned and used exclusively by Polestar.

U.S. assembly was important for Polestar’s North American supply chain and may affect the vehicle’s tariff treatment, delivery logistics and eligibility calculations for certain government incentives. Those rules depend on the vehicle’s model year, battery sourcing, final assembly and the law in force when the vehicle is purchased.

A Polestar 3 assembled in South Carolina is not necessarily identical in sourcing to one assembled in China. Equipment, software versions, battery components and delivery specifications can vary by market.

Are Polestar cars Swedish or Chinese?

The most accurate answer is: Polestar is a Swedish-origin brand with Chinese-linked corporate ownership and substantial Chinese manufacturing.

Polestar was established as a standalone electric-performance brand after developing from Polestar Performance, the performance division associated with Volvo Cars. Its headquarters and design identity have been tied to Sweden, and the brand is commonly described as Swedish. That does not mean every Polestar is assembled in Sweden.

For a buyer, these are separate questions:

  1. Where was the brand developed? Sweden is central to Polestar’s brand identity, design and corporate history.
  2. Where was the car assembled? The answer depends on the model, market and production date—often China, and for some Polestar 3 vehicles, the United States.
  3. Who controls the company? Geely and entities connected to its founder are the dominant strategic owners, while public investors also own shares.

Who owns Polestar today?

Polestar is a publicly traded company, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker PSNY. Its corporate parent is Polestar Automotive Holding UK PLC, the listed holding company used for the Polestar group.

Geely is the key controlling influence behind Polestar. Geely-linked entities are major shareholders and provide access to vehicle platforms, factories, technology and corporate resources. Geely’s founder, Li Shufu, is also closely associated with the group’s ownership structure.

Volvo Cars helped create and develop Polestar and has remained an important industrial and strategic partner. However, Volvo Cars is not the same thing as Polestar’s ultimate owner. Volvo reduced its direct stake in Polestar during the company’s 2024 restructuring, leaving it with a minority interest rather than control.

That produces a structure that is easy to misstate:

Entity Role
Polestar Automotive Holding UK PLC Publicly traded holding company behind the Polestar group.
Geely-linked shareholders Largest strategic ownership and controlling influence.
Volvo Cars Former parent-level partner, minority shareholder and manufacturing/technology partner.
Public shareholders Own the remaining publicly traded shares, subject to changes in the capital structure.

So “Volvo owns Polestar” is now too simple, and “Polestar is completely independent of Geely” is misleading. Polestar is a public company, but it operates within a corporate and industrial ecosystem dominated by Geely.

What is the relationship between Polestar, Volvo and Geely?

Geely acquired Volvo Cars in 2010. Polestar later developed from Volvo’s performance business and became a separate electric-car brand. The companies continue to share technology, platforms, production facilities and engineering relationships in various areas.

That does not mean every Polestar is simply a rebadged Volvo. Polestar has its own exterior design, interiors, software strategy, sales model and product planning. But common platforms and group manufacturing mean the companies are connected operationally.

Geely’s wider automotive sphere also includes brands and businesses such as Geely Auto, Zeekr, Lotus and smart through joint-venture arrangements. The exact legal ownership differs between those businesses, so they should not all be described as divisions of one company.

How to check where a specific Polestar was made

Online model pages may describe a typical production location, but the most reliable answer for a particular car is its vehicle identification number and certification label.

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the vehicle, registration paperwork or purchase documents.
  2. Check the manufacturer label on the driver-side door jamb or door frame. It may identify the final assembly location and manufacturing date.
  3. Ask the Polestar retailer or customer-support team to confirm the vehicle’s country of final assembly.
  4. For an imported or used vehicle, compare the VIN, import records and title documents rather than relying on a seller’s statement.

The VIN’s first characters can provide origin information, but VIN-decoding conventions are not a substitute for the vehicle certification label. A car assembled in one country can contain major systems produced elsewhere.

Common claims that need qualification

  • “Every Polestar is made in Sweden.” No. Sweden is important to the brand’s identity, but the principal assembly locations have been in China, with U.S. production for some Polestar 3 vehicles.
  • “Every Polestar is made in China.” Not necessarily. Polestar 3 production has also been established in South Carolina.
  • “Volvo owns Polestar outright.” Outdated. Volvo was a central founder and partner, but it holds a minority position after reducing its stake.
  • “Polestar is just a Volvo model.” Too simplistic. The brands share industrial resources and technology, but Polestar is a separate publicly traded marque.
  • “Geely manufactures every Polestar directly.” The practical relationship is broader and more complicated: Geely-linked factories and partners assemble vehicles, while the listed Polestar company owns and markets the brand.

Polestar is a Swedish-origin electric-vehicle brand, not a Swedish-built-only automaker. The Polestar 1, 2 and 4 have been produced in China, while the Polestar 3 is also assembled in South Carolina for some markets. Ownership is equally nuanced: Polestar is publicly traded, Volvo is a minority shareholder and manufacturing partner, and Geely-linked interests provide the company’s dominant strategic ownership and industrial backing.
