Genesis is not an independent automaker owned by a separate luxury-car corporation. Hyundai Motor Company launched Genesis as its luxury brand in 2015 and remains its corporate owner. That distinction matters when you are comparing manufacturing origin, warranty support, resale value, parts availability and the financial strength behind the brand.
Where Genesis cars are made
Genesis identifies two current assembly locations:

Production can change by model year, destination market and factory allocation. A vehicle’s badge alone does not prove where that specific example was built. For a purchase or import decision, confirm the country of origin from the vehicle identification number, window sticker, manufacturer documentation or dealer records.
Ulsan, South Korea
Ulsan is Hyundai’s major Korean manufacturing complex and the primary production center for the Genesis lineup. Different production lines within the complex build the GV60 electric crossover, GV70, Electrified GV70, GV80, G70, G80 and G90.

Hyundai is also developing a dedicated electric-vehicle plant in Ulsan. Hyundai has said that a Genesis electric SUV is planned as the first model produced there. That is a future production plan, however, and should not be confused with a complete list of Genesis vehicles currently assembled at the dedicated facility.
Montgomery, Alabama
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery builds the Genesis GV70 and Electrified GV70. It also produces Hyundai-branded vehicles, including the Santa Fe, Santa Fe Hybrid, Tucson and Santa Cruz.
For U.S. buyers, Alabama assembly means that some Genesis SUVs are domestically produced even though Genesis is a Korean-owned luxury brand. It does not mean that every Genesis vehicle, or every component in an Alabama-built vehicle, is made in the United States. Modern vehicles use globally sourced parts, and final assembly location is only one part of a vehicle’s origin.

Is every Genesis made in South Korea?
No. The claim that every Genesis is made in South Korea is outdated for the U.S. market. The GV70 and Electrified GV70 are also assembled in Montgomery, Alabama.
At the same time, the answer can differ in other countries. Genesis Canada, for example, states that all Genesis cars and SUVs sold there are manufactured in South Korea. This is why a general statement about “where Genesis cars are made” can be incomplete: the relevant answer depends on the model, model year and market where the vehicle is sold.
If origin affects your buying decision, use this checklist:
- Identify the exact model and model year.
- Ask the dealer where that vehicle was assembled.
- Check the window sticker or build sheet.
- Verify the VIN and country-of-origin information before signing a purchase contract.
- For tax credits, import rules or other eligibility questions, check the rules in effect for the vehicle’s delivery date rather than relying only on the factory location.
Who owns Genesis?
Hyundai Motor Company owns Genesis. Hyundai launched Genesis as a standalone luxury marque in November 2015. The brand was designed to operate with a distinct identity, products, dealerships and customer experience, but “standalone brand” does not mean “separately owned automaker.”
Hyundai Motor Company is part of the broader Hyundai Motor Group, which also includes Kia and other automotive affiliates. The group is the larger corporate family; Hyundai Motor Company is the company identified as Genesis’ owner in Genesis’ U.S. materials.

Genesis’ U.S. materials also identify the Genesis name, winged logo and vehicle model names as trademarks owned by Hyundai Motor Company and/or Hyundai Motor America. Genesis therefore has a separate brand identity without being financially or legally detached from Hyundai’s corporate organization.
Why ownership and manufacturing location matter to buyers
Warranty and service support
Ownership by Hyundai does not automatically mean that every warranty, dealership or service policy is identical to Hyundai-branded vehicles. Genesis has its own warranty programs and customer-support channels. Before buying, read the warranty for the exact market and model, and confirm which repairs must be completed through an authorized Genesis retailer.
Resale value
A vehicle assembled in Alabama is not automatically worth more or less than one assembled in South Korea. Resale value is usually influenced more heavily by model demand, condition, mileage, accident history, maintenance records, incentives on new vehicles and the supply of used examples. The corporate relationship with Hyundai can provide manufacturing and parts infrastructure, but it does not guarantee a particular depreciation rate.
Parts and repair costs
Genesis shares some corporate resources and engineering relationships with Hyundai Motor Group, but luxury models can still have expensive body panels, electronic systems, tires and scheduled maintenance. A buyer should obtain an insurance quote and compare routine service prices before purchasing, especially for the G80, G90, GV80 and electrified models.

Tax and import considerations
Final assembly location can matter for country-of-origin labeling, tariffs and government incentive eligibility. Those rules are separate from the question of who owns the brand and can change over time. If a tax credit or import classification affects your budget, rely on current government guidance and the vehicle’s exact VIN rather than assuming that all Genesis models share the same treatment.
