When to Claim Social Security: How Benefits Change With Your Claiming Age

There is no universally best age to claim Social Security retirement benefits. You can generally start at 62, but claiming before your full retirement age (FRA) permanently lowers the monthly worker benefit. Claiming at FRA provides the unreduced amount based on your earnings record. Waiting beyond FRA increases the monthly benefit through delayed retirement credits, up to age 70.

The sound choice comes from comparing your own Social Security estimates at several start ages with your cash-flow needs, work plans, health and longevity expectations, tax situation, Medicare costs, and spouse or survivor benefits. The figures below explain the rules; they do not replace an estimate based on your earnings record.

The three claiming milestones

When you claim Effect on the worker benefit Key qualification
Age 62 Earliest ordinary age for retirement benefits, but the monthly amount is reduced for every month before FRA. For people born in 1960 or later, claiming at 62 can mean a maximum reduction of 30% compared with the FRA benefit. The exact reduction depends on birth year and months claimed early.
Full retirement age Provides the unreduced benefit calculated from your covered earnings record. FRA is based on birth year. Someone attaining age 62 in 2026 (born in 1964) has an FRA of 67.
After FRA through age 70 Raises the monthly worker benefit with delayed retirement credits. For workers reaching 62 in 2005 or later, the reference rate is 8% per year; the precise total depends on birth year and months delayed. Credits stop at 70.

These are permanent monthly-benefit adjustments, not temporary introductory rates. Starting earlier gives you more payment months; waiting gives you larger checks later. Social Security does not publish a single age that wins for every person.

How your claiming age changes the monthly amount

Claiming before full retirement age

Social Security reduces a worker benefit when it begins before FRA. The reduction is based on the number of months early and the claimant’s birth year. The often-quoted 30% figure applies as a maximum reduction at 62 for people born in 1960 or later; it should not be applied to every birth cohort.

Use the Social Security Administration’s explanation of early filing and delayed credits for the governing rules: You Can Receive Benefits Before Your Full Retirement Age. The reduction in the base worker amount remains in place even if your circumstances later change.

Claiming at full retirement age

FRA is the point at which the early-claim reduction no longer applies. It is not automatically 65, and it is not the same as Medicare eligibility. The SSA table is birth-year specific. For example, the SSA says the FRA for people who attain age 62 in 2026 is 67. A January 1 birthday may be treated under the prior year’s entry in the table, so check your exact date of birth rather than estimating from a calendar year.

See the current SSA answer, What is full retirement age?, for the table and the Medicare-age reminder.

Delaying after full retirement age

After FRA, delayed retirement credits increase the worker’s monthly amount for each month you defer, but only until age 70. For workers reaching 62 in 2005 or later, SSA’s reference rate is 8% per year. The exact cumulative increase depends on the birth year and the number of months delayed, so do not multiply 8% by a rounded number of years without checking the applicable table.

As the SSA puts it: “If you wait until age 70 to start your benefits, your benefit amount will be higher because you will receive delayed retirement credits for each month you delay filing for benefits.” Once you reach 70, waiting longer does not create additional delayed-retirement credits; there is no reason to postpone a worker retirement claim solely to earn more of those credits.

Your earnings record can matter as much as your age

Claiming-age percentages apply to the benefit produced by your earnings history. SSA generally uses your highest 35 years of covered earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, each missing year is counted as zero; low-earning years can also remain in the calculation until replaced.

Continuing covered work can therefore affect two separate issues: it may raise the underlying benefit by replacing a lower year, and, if you claim before FRA, your wages or net self-employment income may be subject to the earnings test. Review the mechanics at Your Retirement Age and When You Stop Working.

Questions to ask about your record

  • How many years of covered earnings are currently on your record?
  • Are there zero or unusually low years that another year of work could replace?
  • Will your planned work produce wages or net self-employment earnings before FRA?
  • Does your SSA estimate reflect your expected future earnings, or does it assume you stop working now?

Working while receiving benefits: the 2026 earnings test

If you work while receiving retirement benefits before FRA, SSA applies an annual earnings test. For 2026, the limits are:

2026 situation Earnings limit What is counted
Under FRA for the entire year $24,480 Wages and net earnings from self-employment under SSA’s earnings-test rules.
Reaching FRA during 2026 $65,160 Earnings received before the month you reach FRA.
Beginning with the month you reach FRA No earnings test The test stops at FRA.

These are 2026 limits published by SSA, not permanent figures; check the current year’s amount if you are planning for a different year. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans’ benefits, and other government or military retirement income do not count as earnings for this test according to SSA’s 2026 FAQ. Read the current rule at What happens if I work and get Social Security retirement benefits?.

Earnings-test withholding is different from the permanent reduction for claiming early. If checks are withheld because your earnings exceed the limit, SSA says it recalculates your benefit at FRA to account for months in which benefits were reduced or withheld under the earnings test. Do not treat withheld checks as proof that your original claiming-age reduction has been erased.

Household benefits can change the answer

Spousal benefits

Check whether either spouse could qualify on the other’s record before choosing a start date. SSA’s reference describes a spousal benefit of up to 50% of the worker’s primary insurance amount when claimed at the spouse’s FRA. Claiming before the spouse’s FRA can reduce that amount. The household result may differ from the result for either individual considered alone.

Deemed filing and dual eligibility

Many people who qualify for both a retirement benefit on their own record and a spousal benefit are subject to deemed filing: applying for one can be treated as applying for the other. The rules differ for people born before January 2, 1954. Review the filing rules at Filing Rules for Retirement and Spouses Benefits before assuming you can file for one benefit while postponing the other.

Survivor benefits

A surviving spouse’s planning is not simply the worker-retirement calculation repeated. Survivor eligibility, claiming ages, and reduction rules differ. SSA notes that survivor benefits can reflect delayed retirement credits earned by the deceased worker, making the higher earner’s claiming decision important to the surviving household. Use SSA’s survivor-specific guidance rather than a worker-benefit calculator for that analysis.

Voluntary suspension

Suspending a benefit is not a universal reset button. SSA’s rules changed for suspension requests made on or after April 30, 2016. Understand the current consequences before using suspension as a strategy.

Medicare, taxes, and health costs are separate decisions

Medicare at 65

Medicare eligibility generally remains tied to age 65 even when you delay Social Security. Delaying a retirement check does not by itself enroll you in Medicare or settle whether you should enroll. Coordinate the Medicare decision with your employment-based coverage and enrollment deadlines. SSA highlights this issue in Plan for Retirement and its FRA guidance.

Taxes

Some Social Security benefits may be taxable, but the result depends on your total income, filing status, and other circumstances. SSA flags taxation as part of retirement planning; obtain current guidance from the Internal Revenue Service or a qualified tax professional for your situation. Do not compare claiming ages using the gross benefit alone if one option changes your taxable income or Medicare-related costs.

Health and longevity

Earlier filing supplies income sooner and may be valuable when cash is tight or health is poor. Delaying creates a larger later-life monthly benefit, which can matter if you live a long time or want to protect a surviving spouse. These are planning assumptions, not guarantees; no source establishes a universal break-even age.

A practical process for choosing a start month

  1. Confirm your birth date and FRA. Use SSA’s birth-year table, including its treatment of January 1 birthdays.
  2. Open your personal estimate. Create or sign in to your SSA account and compare projected benefits at 62, FRA, and later ages up to 70. The estimates are based on your earnings record, not a generic example.
  3. Audit the earnings record. Look for missing, zero, or low-earning years and consider whether continued work could replace one of the 35 years used in the calculation.
  4. Map your cash flow. List essential expenses, other income, savings withdrawals, debt payments, insurance, and healthcare costs for each possible start date.
  5. Model work before FRA. If you will have wages or net self-employment income, apply the correct 2026 earnings limit (or the limit for the year you will claim) and account for possible withholding.
  6. Analyze the household. Check your own, spouse, divorced-spouse, and survivor eligibility; determine whether deemed filing applies; and identify which spouse has the larger potential benefit.
  7. Coordinate Medicare and taxes. Plan for Medicare at 65 separately from the Social Security start month and estimate after-tax, after-healthcare income.
  8. Choose a month and revisit assumptions. Your claim month is a trade-off among payment duration, monthly amount, work, health, and household protection. Recheck the decision if employment, marital status, health, or caregiving needs change.

SSA’s planning hub, Plan for Retirement, links to personalized estimates and calculators. Those tools can show your actual dollar differences; a general article cannot calculate your personal optimum.

How the trade-offs look in common situations

You need income soon

Starting at 62 can provide checks during a period when you have little other income, but the payment is permanently smaller than the FRA amount. Compare the value of those earlier checks with the income you could obtain by working longer or drawing from savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are healthy and expect a long retirement

Deferring to FRA or later can produce a larger monthly payment for life and may strengthen survivor protection for a spouse. It also requires enough resources to cover the years without Social Security and does not create additional credits after 70.

You plan to keep working below FRA

Estimate both effects: additional earnings may improve a low year in your 35-year record, while wages or net self-employment earnings above the applicable limit may cause temporary withholding. Treat those as separate calculations.

You are deciding as a couple

Compare the household’s combined cash flow and the survivor outcome, not just each person’s individual break-even calculation. A higher earner’s delay can affect the survivor benefit, while deemed-filing rules may limit the ability to claim only one type of benefit.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming everyone has an FRA of 65 or 67 without checking birth year.
  • Applying the 30% early-claim reduction or 8% delayed-credit rate to a cohort without verifying the applicable SSA table.
  • Confusing an earnings-test withholding with the permanent actuarial reduction for an early claim.
  • Ignoring zero or low years in the highest-35-years calculation.
  • Waiting past 70 expecting more delayed retirement credits.
  • Assuming delaying Social Security automatically delays Medicare at 65.
  • Using a worker-benefit calculator to estimate survivor benefits.
  • Comparing gross checks while ignoring taxes, healthcare premiums, and other household income.
  • Relying on a universal break-even age instead of your own SSA estimates and assumptions.
