When to Claim Social Security: A Guide to Early, Full, and Delayed Retirement

There is no universally best age to claim Social Security. You can generally start retirement benefits at 62, claim at full retirement age for your unreduced worker benefit, or delay up to 70 to increase the monthly amount. The right choice depends on your personal estimate, cash needs, work plans, health and longevity expectations, earnings record, spouse or survivor considerations, and Medicare timing—not on a single break-even age.

This guide explains what changes at each claiming age, how continued work can affect both your benefit calculation and near-term payments, and a practical process for comparing your own options using Social Security Administration (SSA) estimates.

What early, full-retirement-age, and delayed claiming mean

These are different start dates for the same worker retirement benefit, not separate benefit programs. Your monthly amount is based on your earnings record and the age at which you begin. The SSA says, “We base your basic Social Security benefit — the amount you would receive at your full retirement age — on your lifetime earnings.”

Claiming point What happens Questions to answer
Early: as soon as 62 You may start before full retirement age, but the monthly worker benefit is permanently reduced according to how many months early you claim. Do you need income now, and can your household manage a lower monthly amount later?
At full retirement age You receive the full retirement benefit calculated for your earnings record. Full retirement age varies by birth year; it is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. How does the full-retirement-age estimate compare with your early and delayed estimates, especially if you will keep working?
Delayed: after full retirement age through 70 Delayed retirement credits increase the worker’s monthly amount until age 70. Waiting beyond 70 adds no further increase. Can you cover expenses while waiting, and would a larger later benefit help you or a survivor?

For people whose full retirement age is 67, the SSA’s current benefits planner illustrates that claiming at 62 can produce a reduction of up to 30%. That is a cohort-specific illustration, not a universal percentage for every birth year. Check your birth year and personal estimates.

Why your birth year matters

Full retirement age is set by birth year, so two people who claim at the same chronological age can face different reductions or delayed-credit calculations. The SSA’s 2026 guidance identifies age 67 as full retirement age for people attaining age 62 in 2026. Use the SSA’s current table or your account estimate to confirm your exact full retirement age.

How Social Security calculates your worker benefit

The highest 35 years of earnings

Retirement benefits use your highest 35 years of covered earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, years with no earnings are included in the calculation. Even with 35 years, a low-earning year can reduce the average.

Why working longer can change the estimate

Additional covered work can replace a lower year in the 35-year record. That means stopping work before claiming can affect your benefit independently of the claiming age. Ask the SSA calculator to show whether expected earnings would replace a lower or zero year; do not assume that another year of work automatically produces a large increase.

Get estimates for several start ages

Create a side-by-side record of your own SSA estimates at 62, your full retirement age, and one or more ages between full retirement age and 70. Record the start month used for each estimate, because changing the month changes the number of months of reduction or credit. The estimates are more useful than a generic percentage or an internet break-even chart.

A decision framework that fits your household

Work through these questions in order. The answers can point toward different claiming ages, and no single answer overrides the rest.

1. What income do you need now?

List essential monthly spending, cash reserves, pensions, investment withdrawals, wages, and other predictable income. If claiming at 62 prevents high-cost debt or an unaffordable withdrawal rate, early benefits may solve an immediate cash problem. If you can meet expenses from other resources, delaying may buy a larger later-life payment.

2. What happens if you keep working?

Estimate your earnings by year and compare them with the lower years in your Social Security record. Also account for the separate earnings test that can temporarily withhold benefits before full retirement age. A claim-and-work plan can have a different near-term result from a claim-and-stop-work plan.

3. How do health and longevity affect the choice?

Your expected years of receiving benefits matter because early claiming provides payments sooner while delayed claiming provides larger payments later. Health history and family longevity are personal variables, not a government formula that identifies one correct age. Consider whether you are insuring against the financial risk of living a long time, not just comparing the first few years of checks.

4. Who else relies on your record?

If you are married, divorced, widowed, or supporting a dependent, compare the effect on each potentially eligible benefit. A higher worker benefit can matter to a surviving spouse, while a filing choice that looks attractive for one person may not maximize household income.

5. Can you cover the years before a delayed claim?

Model the bridge from your planned retirement date to the delayed claiming date. Include taxes, investment volatility, health costs, housing expenses, and emergency reserves. A plan that works only if markets rise every year is not a reliable bridge.

6. What is your Medicare plan?

Medicare eligibility remains at 65, regardless of when you start Social Security retirement benefits. Delaying Social Security does not automatically enroll you in Medicare. Confirm your enrollment window and whether employer group coverage changes the correct action.

Working while receiving benefits

You can work and receive retirement benefits, but before full retirement age the annual earnings test may cause SSA to withhold part of your benefit. The limits are year-specific and apply to earnings, not investment income.

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule
Under full retirement age for the entire year $24,480 $1 withheld for every $2 earned above the limit.
Year you reach full retirement age, for earnings before the month you reach it $65,160 $1 withheld for every $3 earned above the limit.
Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age No earnings-test reduction Earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test.

These are SSA’s 2026 figures. Recheck the current SSA earnings-test page for the year in which you will work and claim. Tell SSA about expected earnings and update the estimate if your work pattern changes; an incorrect estimate can lead to unexpected withholding.

Spouse, divorced-spouse, family, and survivor benefits

Do not evaluate a worker benefit in isolation when another person may qualify on the record. Eligibility depends on relationship, age, work history, and filing circumstances.

Family benefits do not always follow the worker’s delayed credits

SSA’s retirement-planning guidance says family or survivor benefit amounts are highest at full retirement age and do not increase when a person waits beyond full retirement age. That differs from the worker’s own retirement benefit, which can grow with delayed retirement credits through age 70. Survivor full retirement age may also differ from the worker’s full retirement age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Married and divorced households

A spouse or qualifying divorced spouse may have rights based on your record, while each person may also have a benefit based on their own earnings. Compare both records and the likely survivor outcome. Do not assume that the higher earner should always claim first or that the lower earner should always claim early.

Deemed filing and dual eligibility

SSA has deemed-filing rules for people eligible for both their own retirement benefit and a spouse benefit, with exceptions based on birth date and circumstances. Because the exceptions are fact-specific, review the current SSA filing rules or ask SSA for a personal determination before choosing a filing strategy.

Medicare is a separate age-65 decision

Starting Social Security at 62 does not enroll you in Medicare early, and delaying Social Security past 65 does not delay Medicare eligibility. If you are eligible, plan for Medicare at 65 even when your retirement benefit will start later.

How and when to file

SSA says a retirement application can be filed as early as four months before the intended start month. The month you name on the application matters: it is the start month for the benefit, while payment generally arrives in the month after the month for which it is due.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose candidate start months. Select an early date, your full-retirement-age date, and any delayed dates you can realistically fund.
  2. Check your SSA earnings record. Look for missing wages, incorrect employers, or years that should be replaced by expected future earnings.
  3. Run the estimates. Save the estimated monthly amount and assumptions for every candidate start month.
  4. Review work income. If you will be below full retirement age and working, apply the 2026 earnings-test rules or the limits for the relevant future year.
  5. Analyze household benefits. Ask about spouse, divorced-spouse, family, and survivor eligibility, plus deemed-filing rules.
  6. Make a Medicare plan. Decide how and when to enroll at 65, including the effect of employer coverage.
  7. Apply on time. File within the four-month window for the intended start month, and verify the start month shown in the application confirmation.

Why a single break-even age can mislead

A break-even calculation compares earlier smaller payments with later larger payments, but its result changes with the assumed lifespan, investment return, taxes, inflation, work income, and the exact start months. It also ignores the value of survivor protection and other household benefits unless those are modeled separately. The available guidance does not establish an individualized break-even age or a universal claiming recommendation.

Use break-even math, if at all, as one sensitivity test inside a broader plan. Run several longevity and spending scenarios, then check whether the household can tolerate the result if either spouse lives much longer than expected.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating 62 as the “full” age

Age 62 is the earliest ordinary claiming age, not the age for an unreduced benefit. Confirm full retirement age by birth year before comparing estimates.

Mistake: assuming delayed credits continue after 70

The worker’s monthly amount can increase through age 70. Waiting beyond 70 provides no additional delayed-retirement increase, so coordinate any later decision with Medicare and other income needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: overlooking low or missing earnings years

Review the 35-year record. A missing year or a low year can matter as much as the choice between two nearby claiming months.

Mistake: ignoring the earnings test

If you claim before full retirement age and continue working, compare expected earnings with the applicable annual limit. Recheck the limit for each calendar year rather than reusing a prior year’s number.

Mistake: assuming Social Security filing handles Medicare

Retirement claiming and Medicare enrollment are separate. Put a specific age-65 enrollment task on your calendar.

Mistake: applying without checking the start month

Because payments arrive after the month for which they are due, verify both the start month and the first expected payment month before submitting.

A practical comparison worksheet

Prepare one row for each candidate start month and fill in the following fields:

  • Age and calendar month when benefits begin.
  • SSA-estimated monthly worker benefit.
  • Expected wages and whether the earnings test applies.
  • Other income available before and after claiming.
  • Monthly essential spending and emergency reserves.
  • Spouse, former-spouse, dependent, and survivor effects.
  • Medicare enrollment date, premiums, and employer-coverage status.
  • What changes if either spouse lives substantially longer than expected.

Take this worksheet to SSA or a qualified retirement-income professional if your household has multiple benefit records, a recent divorce or widowhood, continued work, or a complicated Medicare situation.

Questions to ask SSA before you file

  • What is my exact full retirement age based on my birth year?
  • What are my estimated benefits at each candidate start month?
  • Does my earnings record contain missing or incorrect years?
  • Could future work replace a lower year in my highest-35 calculation?
  • How will my expected earnings affect benefits before full retirement age?
  • Am I eligible for a spouse, divorced-spouse, family, or survivor benefit?
  • Do deemed-filing rules apply to my application?
  • What Medicare action is required at 65 given my employer or spouse’s employer coverage?
  • What start month and first payment month will appear on my application?

The best claim is the one that fits your verified estimates, cash-flow capacity, work plans, health and longevity assumptions, household benefit rules, and Medicare obligations. Compare those factors together rather than treating any age as automatically correct.
