Pay cash when the award value is weak, the paid fare earns benefits you need, or the cash itinerary is materially better. The decision is a calculation for the specific flight—not a universal cents-per-mile rule.
The short answer: compare the net value of the exact booking
Start with the cash price of the same flight, then compare it with the miles or points required for an award seat. Subtract the award ticket’s taxes, carrier surcharges and other fees from the cash fare you would otherwise pay. Convert the remaining amount to cents and divide by the number of miles required.

The basic calculation is:
Value per mile = ((comparable cash fare − award taxes, fees and surcharges) × 100) ÷ miles required

That figure is only the starting point. A paid ticket may earn airline miles, credit-card points or elite-qualifying credit that an award ticket does not. An award may also involve a worse connection, a positioning flight, an extra hotel night or less useful change and cancellation terms. Include those differences before deciding.

There is no universally correct redemption threshold. A value that is attractive to one traveler may be poor for another, depending on cash budget, travel flexibility, status goals and alternative uses for the points.
What to compare before you book
Match the itineraries as closely as possible
Use the same dates, origin, destination, cabin and, where possible, the same flight numbers. Compare equivalent fare conditions as well: a refundable or flexible cash fare is not directly comparable with a restrictive award, and a nonstop flight is not equivalent to an award requiring a long connection.
If an exact match is unavailable, compare genuinely similar options and put a value on the differences. A cheaper award that requires an overnight stay is not cheaper after adding a hotel, meals and the time cost of the stop. An award departing from another airport may require a positioning flight, ground transportation and additional schedule risk.
Record every award cost
Airlines can collect taxes, government charges, booking fees and carrier-imposed surcharges on award tickets. Enter the total amount you would pay at checkout, not just the advertised mileage figure. Those charges reduce the cash value you are avoiding and therefore reduce the redemption value.

Account for what a paid ticket would earn
A cash fare may generate redeemable miles, points or elite credit. If those benefits matter, estimate their value and subtract it from the cash fare avoided. Elite credit can be especially important when a paid trip would move you close to a status qualification target; it may be worth little if you are not pursuing status.
Price flexibility and convenience differences
Change and cancellation rules can materially alter the comparison. If an award can be changed with a modest penalty while the cash ticket is nonrefundable, that flexibility has value. Conversely, if the award has a difficult redeposit process or fewer available alternatives, a cash fare may be worth paying even when its arithmetic value is lower.
A worked example using the formula
The following is an illustration, not a quote for a particular route. Suppose the same economy itinerary costs $420 in cash. The award requires 30,000 miles plus $60 in taxes and fees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Subtract award costs from the cash fare: $420 − $60 = $360.
- Convert the result to cents: $360 × 100 = 36,000 cents.
- Divide by the mileage requirement: 36,000 ÷ 30,000 = 1.2 cents per mile.
The raw redemption value is therefore 1.2 cents per mile. Before treating that as a final answer, estimate the miles, points and elite credit the $420 fare would have earned. If you value those foregone benefits at $35, the adjusted cash alternative is effectively $385, and the adjusted redemption value becomes about 1.08 cents per mile. If the award also requires a less convenient connection, its practical value is lower still.

The reverse can happen. An award with a high mileage price may still be sensible when the comparable cash fare is unusually expensive and the award itinerary is equally convenient. The formula reveals the trade-off instead of relying on the miles number alone.
When using miles is usually the stronger choice
The cash price is high relative to the award price
High cash fares increase the amount of money avoided by a redemption. If taxes and fees remain modest and the itinerary is equivalent, the resulting cents-per-mile figure may be attractive. Check the fare on the exact dates and cabin you would otherwise buy; a high price on a different date does not justify the award you found.
The award preserves the trip’s quality
A redemption is easier to justify when it provides the same nonstop routing, similar departure times and comparable cabin or fare conditions. Do not measure value solely by the nominal cash price if the award forces costs or inconveniences that you would not accept on a paid ticket.

Personal liquidity matters. If paying cash would interfere with rent, debt payments, emergency savings or another high-priority use, redeeming points can be rational even when the calculated value is not the highest you could theoretically obtain. This is a budget decision, not just a rewards optimization exercise.

The award offers flexibility you would otherwise have to buy
When the award’s change or cancellation terms are meaningfully better than the available cash fare, include that protection in your decision. The value depends on your likelihood of changing plans and on the actual rules for the program and itinerary.
When paying cash is usually the stronger choice
The redemption produces weak value
If the cash fare is low, the award requires many miles or the award fees are high, the calculation may produce a result you do not consider worthwhile. There is no mandated cutoff; compare your result with realistic alternative uses for the points and with published estimates used only as context.
You need the paid ticket’s earnings
Choose cash when the fare’s redeemable rewards or elite credit have meaningful value for you. A traveler close to status qualification may rationally pay for a fare that earns qualifying credit, while a traveler with no status objective may not assign any value to it.
The cash itinerary is materially better
Paying can be preferable when the award requires a positioning flight, an extra overnight stay, a much longer connection or a less useful schedule. Add transportation, lodging, meals and the risk of separate tickets to the award side of the comparison. If those costs exceed the savings, the award is not a bargain.

You need to keep the points for a more valuable, time-sensitive use
Points are a limited resource. If you have a confirmed future redemption that would deliver substantially more value, using miles for a low-value flight has an opportunity cost. Confirm the future program rules and award availability before assuming that alternative will remain possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How published valuations should influence your decision
Published valuations can provide a reference point, but they are not promises. NerdWallet says its mile valuations are estimates based on observed comparisons of cash and award prices for the same flights. Its 2026 analysis compares economy fares across routes and booking horizons, with program-level figures reported as medians from its dataset. A median cannot predict the value of your specific date, route, cabin or fare.
| Program | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Air Canada Aeroplan | 1.1 cents per mile — NerdWallet, 2026 | Dated benchmark from NerdWallet’s October 2026 valuation table; not a guaranteed return. |
| Air France / KLM Flying Blue | 1.0 cent per mile — NerdWallet, 2026 | Dated benchmark from the same table; individual awards can be higher or lower. |
Use a published number as a reasonableness check after calculating your own itinerary. Do not transfer points or book solely because a redemption exceeds a published average. Current award inventory, pricing, taxes, surcharges and change or cancellation terms depend on the exact program and flight.
A step-by-step cash-versus-miles workflow
- Search the cash option. Record the total price, including taxes, the exact dates, routing, cabin, fare type and refund or change conditions.
- Search the award option. Record the miles or points required, every tax and fee, the flight numbers, connection times and award restrictions.
- Confirm itinerary equivalence. Note any different airport, connection, overnight stay, separate ticket or schedule disadvantage.
- Calculate the raw value. Apply the cents-per-mile formula to the comparable cash fare and award cost.
- Estimate foregone paid-ticket rewards. Include redeemable points, airline miles and elite credit only if they have real value in your situation.
- Price indirect costs. Add positioning transportation, lodging, meals, extra baggage costs and the value of additional travel time where applicable.
- Value flexibility. Compare change, cancellation, redeposit and no-show rules. Treat a difference as valuable only if you are likely to use it.
- Check alternative uses. Consider whether the same points have a confirmed or realistic higher-value use, while recognizing that future award inventory and program terms can change.
- Verify before transferring. If you must move transferable points into an airline program, confirm the exact award seat, price, fees and booking rules first. Transfers can be irreversible or difficult to undo.
- Book the better net option. Choose the option that best fits your calculated value, budget, schedule and risk tolerance—not the one with the most impressive headline number.
Common mistakes that distort the calculation
- Using the wrong cash comparator: comparing a fully flexible cash fare with a restrictive award, or a nonstop with a connecting itinerary, overstates redemption value.
- Ignoring taxes and surcharges: dividing the full cash fare by miles without subtracting award costs makes the redemption look better than it is.
- Counting points at an arbitrary price: the value of foregone rewards depends on your actual earning rate, redemption plans and status goals.
- Overlooking separate-ticket risk: a positioning flight booked separately may require a new ticket if the first segment is delayed.
- Treating averages as guarantees: a published program valuation is a dated estimate, not a floor or ceiling for every award.
- Transferring before confirming inventory: availability can disappear and program terms can vary by itinerary. Verify the bookable award first.
- Forgetting the value of time: an overnight connection or a much longer journey can erase nominal savings even when no new cash fee appears.
A practical decision checklist
Before selecting “pay” or “redeem,” write down answers to these questions:
- What is the all-in cash price for the itinerary I would actually take?
- What is the all-in award price in points or miles plus taxes, fees and surcharges?
- Are the dates, airports, cabin, connections and fare conditions genuinely comparable?
- What redeemable rewards and elite credit would the paid fare earn?
- Would the award require a positioning flight, hotel night, extra meals or a less convenient schedule?
- Which option has better change and cancellation terms for my circumstances?
- Do these points have a more valuable, realistic use, and have I verified that alternative?
- Have I confirmed the exact award seat and program rules before transferring points?
If the award remains attractive after those adjustments and fits your budget, redeem. If the calculation is weak or the paid fare’s earnings and convenience matter more, pay cash and keep the points.
