When Should You Claim Social Security to Increase Retirement Income?

There is no universally best age to claim Social Security. The right choice depends on your personal benefit estimates, need for income, plans to keep working, earnings record, health and longevity expectations, and whether a spouse or survivors may rely on your record. You can start as early as 62, but starting before full retirement age permanently lowers the monthly worker benefit. Waiting after full retirement age raises the monthly amount through age 70, with no further increase after 70.

What changes when you claim

Social Security claiming age changes the size and timing of your monthly check; it does not change the underlying earnings record used to calculate your benefit. The Social Security Administration (SSA) generally bases a retirement benefit on your highest 35 years of covered earnings and then adjusts the result for the age at which payments begin.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Claiming before full retirement age: You receive payments for more months, but the monthly worker benefit is reduced.
  • Claiming at full retirement age: You receive the unreduced worker benefit associated with your record.
  • Delaying after full retirement age: Delayed retirement credits raise the monthly benefit until you reach 70. There is no additional increase for waiting beyond 70.

SSA summarizes the decision this way: “You’ll decide when to apply based on what works best for you.” A larger check is valuable only if your cash-flow needs, health outlook and household plan support waiting for it.

Full retirement age is tied to your birth year

Full retirement age (FRA) is not the same for everyone. For a person attaining age 62 in 2026, FRA is 67. Other birth cohorts have different FRA rules, so check SSA’s age-by-birth-year guidance rather than applying 67 automatically.

Your FRA matters for three separate reasons: it determines whether your worker benefit is reduced for early filing, it determines when the retirement earnings test stops applying, and it marks the point after which delayed retirement credits can increase your benefit until age 70.

Compare the claiming ages that matter

Start with your own SSA estimates for age 62, your FRA and age 70 (or any age you are seriously considering). Do not substitute a national average or a maximum benefit example for your estimate.

Starting age Monthly-benefit effect Payment timing Questions to resolve
62 Lowest monthly worker benefit among the three benchmark ages Payments begin earliest Do you need income now, and can you accept a smaller check for life?
Full retirement age Unreduced worker benefit for your record Payments begin later than 62 Will waiting improve your cash flow without creating a gap you cannot fund?
70 Highest monthly worker benefit available through delayed retirement credits Payments begin latest; no further increase after 70 Can other income cover you until 70, and are you likely to benefit from larger later payments?

For scale only, SSA’s 2026 maximum-benefit FAQ gives these examples for a worker who earned the taxable maximum every year beginning at age 22: $2,969 per month at 62, $4,152 at full retirement age and $5,181 at 70. Those are high-earner examples for a specified claim year, not typical amounts or a forecast of your benefit.

Use a personal estimate before choosing

Your decision should begin with the estimate in your my Social Security account. The account can show projected amounts at different starting ages, but the result is only as reliable as the earnings record and assumptions behind it.

  1. Review your date of birth and earnings history. Look for missing years, incorrect wages or self-employment income and unusual entries.
  2. Compare at least three ages. Record the projected monthly amount at 62, your FRA and 70, plus any age at which you might actually file.
  3. Test your work plans. Enter the income you expect before FRA and determine whether the earnings test could withhold benefits.
  4. Check household eligibility. Note whether a spouse, ex-spouse or survivor benefit could affect the filing sequence.
  5. Check Medicare timing separately. If you delay Social Security, identify how you will enroll in Medicare around 65 and how premiums will be paid.
  6. Correct the record before applying. If earnings are missing or wrong, address the issue with SSA and keep documentation.

Working while collecting Social Security

Before FRA, earnings above the applicable annual limit can cause SSA to withhold part of your benefits. The limit and formula depend on whether you are below FRA for the entire calendar year or reach FRA during the year.

If you are below FRA all year in 2026

SSA deducts $1 in benefits for each $2 of earnings above $24,480. This is the 2026 annual limit and should not be reused for a later year without checking the current figure.

If you reach FRA during 2026

SSA deducts $1 for each $3 earned above $65,160, counting only earnings received before the month you reach FRA. Once you reach FRA, the earnings test no longer reduces benefits because of work.

What happens to withheld months

Withholding under the earnings test is not the same as losing those months permanently. SSA says withheld months are later credited through a recalculation, which can raise the benefit after FRA. Include the timing of that adjustment when you compare filing while working with delaying your application.

Your work history can raise benefits independently of waiting

Delaying a claim is only one way to improve a retirement benefit. If your record has fewer than 35 years of earnings, zero years enter the calculation. Additional covered work can replace a zero or replace a lower-earning year with a higher one, increasing the calculated benefit even if you do not wait until 70 to file.

Ask SSA how another year of work would affect your estimate. Someone with a long, high-earning record may gain little from replacing an existing year, while someone with gaps or several low years may gain more.

Spouse, ex-spouse and survivor rules can change the answer

A household decision is not always the same as an individual decision. Review both partners’ records and the possible effect of each person’s filing age.

Spousal eligibility and deemed filing

People who qualify for both a worker benefit and a spousal benefit can be subject to deemed-filing rules. Those rules can require an application for both types of benefits when one application is filed, depending on age and eligibility. Do not assume you can choose only the larger payment or switch freely without checking the rule that applies to your birth year and circumstances.

Survivor benefits

Survivor benefits follow different rules from retirement benefits. A surviving spouse may be able to claim a survivor benefit while allowing their own retirement benefit to continue growing, or may use a different sequence depending on eligibility and age. The best sequence depends on both records, ages and the timing of each application. Ask SSA to evaluate the specific case before filing.

Divorced-spouse situations

An ex-spouse’s record can matter if the marriage and other eligibility requirements are met. Because filing choices can interact with your own worker benefit and with survivor rights, obtain a case-specific answer rather than relying on a general claiming rule.

Medicare is a separate decision at 65

Delaying Social Security does not automatically mean you should delay Medicare. SSA advises people to consider Medicare enrollment around age 65 even when they postpone retirement benefits. Part B premiums may be deducted from monthly Social Security payments, so delaying the benefit requires a plan for paying those premiums and confirming that your other coverage permits a later enrollment date.

Check enrollment timing for your actual coverage situation. Employer coverage, retiree coverage and other insurance can change the applicable steps; do not treat a Social Security filing date as a Medicare enrollment date.

Use break-even analysis carefully

A simple break-even calculation compares the extra checks received by claiming earlier with the larger checks received after delaying. It can help you see the trade-off, but it is not a universal answer. The break-even age changes with assumptions about how long you live, taxes, investment returns, inflation, earnings before FRA and household benefits.

Earlier filing provides more months of payments and may solve an immediate cash-flow problem. Delaying provides fewer initial payments but a larger monthly amount later. Frame the result as a planning range, not a prediction of your lifespan or a guaranteed investment return.

Questions to ask before you apply

  • What are my SSA estimates at 62, FRA and 70?
  • How many years are in my earnings record, and are any years missing or unusually low?
  • Will I work before FRA, and could my earnings exceed the 2026 limit or the limit in the year I claim?
  • What income, savings or pension will cover expenses if I delay?
  • How would my choice affect a spouse’s potential benefit or a survivor’s future income?
  • Could deemed-filing rules apply to me?
  • When and how will I enroll in Medicare, and how will Part B premiums be paid?
  • Have I asked SSA about any spouse, divorced-spouse, survivor or disability eligibility that could change my filing sequence?

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Ignoring work after filing

Filing before FRA while earning above the annual limit can trigger withholding. Build the earnings test into your cash-flow plan and remember that SSA later recalculates withheld months.

Overlooking low or missing earnings years

With fewer than 35 years, zeros can reduce the calculation. Additional covered work may replace a zero or a lower year.

Choosing a filing order without checking household rules

Spousal, divorced-spouse and survivor benefits have distinct rules, including deemed filing. Ask SSA about your exact eligibility before submitting an application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delaying Social Security and forgetting Medicare

Review Medicare enrollment at 65 independently of your Social Security start date.

A practical decision framework

  1. Establish the numbers: verify your record and save the SSA estimates for each candidate age.
  2. Cover the bridge: identify reliable income for every month you delay and account for health-insurance and Medicare costs.
  3. Model work: estimate earnings before FRA and apply the correct annual-limit rule for the year involved.
  4. Evaluate longevity and protection: consider your health outlook and whether a larger later benefit would protect a spouse or survivor.
  5. Confirm the rules: contact SSA for household-specific filing, deemed-filing and survivor guidance.
  6. Apply at the chosen age: recheck current earnings limits and Medicare requirements immediately before filing, since annual figures and administrative guidance can change.

The strongest choice is the one that fits your verified benefit estimates, cash-flow needs, work plans, health expectations and household protection goals. Revisit the decision if those facts change before you apply.
