Most workers can start retirement benefits at 62, but claiming before full retirement age permanently lowers the monthly worker benefit. Waiting beyond full retirement age raises it through age 70. The sound choice comes from comparing your own Social Security estimates with your health, cash needs, work plans, taxes, Medicare coverage, and family benefits—not from guessing what Congress might do.
Use current law for a claiming decision, then treat trust-fund projections and proposed rule changes as reasons to stay informed rather than as changes that have already happened.

Begin with several personal Social Security estimates
The most useful first step is to compare your retirement benefit at multiple claiming ages in your personal Social Security account. Check at least age 62, your full retirement age, and age 70; add an intermediate age if you may claim then. The estimates use your earnings record, so they are more relevant than a national average or a generic break-even chart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Review your earnings record and look for missing or incorrect years. Your retirement benefit depends on covered earnings, so an error can affect every age estimate.
- Record the estimated monthly amount at 62, full retirement age, and 70. Save the date of the estimate because benefit formulas, cost-of-living adjustments, and administrative guidance can change.
- List the income you would have at each start date: wages, savings withdrawals, pensions, annuities, and any spouse or survivor benefit.
- Test each option against your expected spending, taxes, health coverage, and the possibility that you or a spouse will live well into later life.
Social Security Administration guidance emphasizes that one choice does not work for everyone. An estimate is a planning input, not a promise that a particular claiming age will maximize your lifetime total.

What changes at 62, full retirement age, and 70?
| Claiming point | What the rule does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Age 62 | Allows an eligible worker to begin retirement benefits, usually at the smallest monthly amount. | Benefits claimed before full retirement age are permanently reduced. For people born in 1960 or later, the reduction can be as much as 30% compared with claiming at 67; the exact percentage depends on birth year and the number of months claimed early. |
| Full retirement age | Provides the worker’s unreduced primary retirement benefit under current law. | For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. Earlier birth years have different full-retirement-age schedules. |
| After full retirement age, up to 70 | Delayed retirement credits increase the worker’s monthly benefit. | For people born in 1943 or later, the annual credit rate is 8%. The increase stops at age 70; delaying beyond 70 does not create a larger retirement benefit. |
The early-claiming reduction is permanent, while delayed credits permanently increase the worker benefit once claimed. Neither rule says which age is best for your household. Starting early can provide needed cash and more years of payments; waiting can provide a larger inflation-adjusted monthly amount for the rest of your life.
An illustrative way to view the tradeoff
Suppose a worker’s full-retirement-age estimate is treated as 100% solely for comparison. A claim at 62 could be as low as 70% for the applicable birth cohort, while a claim at 70 would include delayed credits accumulated after full retirement age. Those percentages illustrate the direction of the adjustment, not an individual’s dollar result. Your account estimate reflects your earnings record and the months between your actual start date and full retirement age.
Rather than relying on a single “break-even” age, compare the situations in which each option would be useful. A break-even calculation assumes a lifespan, ignores investment returns and taxes, and may omit a spouse’s survivor benefit. It can therefore be a helpful sensitivity check but not a universal recommendation.
Health, longevity, and cash needs
Health and expected longevity matter because claiming age changes the size and duration of monthly payments. If you need income now, have limited savings, or face a shorter expected lifespan, an earlier claim may fit your resources. If you are healthy, have other income, and want to insure against living into your 80s or 90s, a larger payment beginning later can be valuable.

Do not turn a diagnosis or family history into a precise forecast. Instead, test a range of lifespans and ask whether your plan still pays essential expenses if you live longer than expected. Include inflation-sensitive costs such as housing, food, insurance premiums, and care. Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustments apply to benefits, but a larger starting benefit generally means larger dollar adjustments later.
Working while receiving benefits
Work interacts with claiming before full retirement age. Under the earnings test, Social Security may withhold some benefits when earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. The limit changes over time, and special rules can apply in the year you reach full retirement age, so check the current limit with the Social Security Administration before filing.
Withheld payments are not simply lost. Social Security later adjusts the benefit to account for months in which payments were withheld. Once you reach full retirement age, earnings from work no longer reduce your retirement benefit under the earnings test. Continuing to work can also improve your eventual benefit if a new year of earnings replaces a lower year in the calculation of your highest covered earnings years.

Questions to answer before claiming while employed
- How much will you earn in the calendar year you claim, and does the current earnings limit apply to you?
- Will withholding create a cash shortfall, and do you have reserves to cover it?
- Could additional covered earnings replace lower years in your earnings record?
- Would delaying your claim allow your employer plan or savings to bridge the period until a larger benefit?
Medicare at 65 is a separate decision
Delaying retirement benefits does not automatically mean you should delay Medicare. Social Security advises people to consider Medicare enrollment at 65 even when they postpone their retirement check. A person who keeps working may have employer coverage that changes the enrollment analysis, while someone without qualifying coverage can face gaps or penalties if enrollment is delayed.

Put Medicare on its own timeline. Confirm your Initial Enrollment Period, coordinate with an employer’s group health plan if applicable, and understand how premiums are paid if you have not started Social Security. The decision to claim a retirement benefit and the decision to enroll in health insurance are related cash-flow questions, not the same election.
Marriage, divorce, and survivor benefits can change the answer
Your own estimate is only part of a household decision. A spouse may qualify for a spousal benefit, and a surviving spouse may later qualify under survivor-benefit rules. A larger worker benefit created by delaying can produce a larger survivor benefit for the spouse who lives longer, which is especially important when one spouse has substantially higher earnings.
For people eligible for both their own retirement benefit and a spousal benefit, deemed-filing rules generally prevent claiming one while delaying the other. In practice, an application for one benefit can be treated as an application for both, subject to the rules for the claimant’s birth year and eligibility. Survivor benefits are different: do not assume the worker/spousal deemed-filing rule applies identically to every survivor situation.
Divorced people should check whether a former marriage meets the requirements for a divorced-spouse benefit and whether claiming on that record affects their own benefit. Marriage, divorce, remarriage, age differences, and caregiving can all alter the household result. Ask Social Security for a benefit-specific explanation before filing if your family situation is complex.

The Social Security Fairness Act and public pensions
The Social Security Fairness Act of 2025 ended the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset for affected people whose pensions came from work not covered by Social Security. The Social Security Administration began adjusting monthly payments in February 2025. The agency reported that more than 2.8 million people had been affected by those provisions before the law changed. If you or a spouse has such a pension, review your earnings and payment records and check your adjustment status with Social Security rather than relying on an older estimate.

The latest Trustees projections describe a financing problem, not an automatic date on which checks become zero. Under the 2026 Trustees’ intermediate assumptions, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) trust-fund reserves are projected to be depleted in 2032. At that point, continuing income is projected to cover 78% of scheduled OASI benefits. The combined Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) trust funds are projected to be depleted in 2034.
| Projection | What it means under the 2026 intermediate assumptions |
|---|---|
| OASI reserves | Reserves projected to be exhausted in 2032; ongoing income projected to pay 78% of scheduled OASI benefits then. |
| Combined OASDI reserves | Reserves projected to be exhausted in 2034. |
Trust-fund depletion means accumulated reserves are exhausted. It does not mean payroll-tax income and other incoming revenue disappear, nor does it specify the benefit formula Congress will set in the future. The Trustees’ dates are projections based on economic, demographic, and policy assumptions under current law. Future reports can move the dates, and Congress can change taxes, benefits, eligibility, or financing before then.
Recommended Free Tools
For planning, use the benefit estimate available under current law, maintain a savings strategy that does not depend on one government projection, and revisit the plan when the Trustees issue new reports or Congress enacts a change. Do not reduce a current benefit estimate simply because a proposal or headline discusses insolvency.

Retirement-age proposals are not current eligibility rules
The Social Security Administration analyzes proposals that would increase or otherwise change retirement ages. An analysis shows what a proposal could do; it does not enact the proposal. Unless Congress changes the law and the change takes effect for your birth cohort, the current age range remains generally 62 through 70, with the full-retirement-age schedule set by existing law.
When you read that the retirement age “could” rise, identify three separate facts: the law in force today, the proposal’s text and status, and the group of people the proposal would affect if enacted. Check current SSA eligibility information when you are close to applying. Do not claim early solely to beat an unpassed proposal, and do not delay solely because someone predicts a future age increase.
A practical claiming checklist
- Compare ages: Save SSA estimates for 62, full retirement age, 70, and any realistic middle option.
- Verify earnings: Correct missing wages or self-employment credits before filing.
- Map cash flow: Show how expenses are paid during any years you delay, including taxes on withdrawals and other income.
- Review work plans: Apply the current earnings-test rules if you will work before full retirement age.
- Plan Medicare: Decide how you will enroll at 65 and pay premiums if you are delaying Social Security.
- Check family eligibility: Include spousal, divorced-spouse, and survivor possibilities, and ask about deemed filing where relevant.
- Consider longevity: Test the plan against a long life, not just an average life expectancy.
- Track law and projections: Recheck official SSA guidance, earnings limits, and Trustees reports before submitting an application.
The decision is reversible only in limited circumstances and can affect decades of income, so obtain a benefit-specific explanation before filing if your record includes a public pension, a former spouse, a disabled family member, or unusual work history.
