When Should You Claim Social Security: Early, Full Retirement Age, or Later?

There is no universally best age to claim Social Security. Starting as early as 62 provides income sooner but permanently lowers the worker’s monthly retirement benefit. Waiting until full retirement age (FRA) avoids the early-claiming reduction, and delaying beyond FRA increases the worker’s monthly amount through age 70. Claiming age and the age you stop working are separate decisions, so compare your own Social Security estimates with your work plans, household benefits, taxes, health coverage and expected longevity.

What changes when you claim at 62, full retirement age or 70?

Social Security retirement benefits can generally begin at age 62. If you claim before your FRA, the monthly amount is reduced for the months you receive benefits early. For people whose FRA is 67, claiming at 62 can reduce the worker’s benefit by as much as 30% compared with the FRA amount. That reduction generally applies for life, although cost-of-living adjustments and later benefit recalculations can change the dollar amount.

Claiming at FRA gives you the benefit calculated for your record without the early-claiming reduction. Delaying after FRA earns delayed retirement credits through age 70, producing a larger monthly retirement benefit. Social Security does not add further delayed-retirement credits after age 70, so waiting beyond 70 does not increase the worker’s retirement benefit.

Full retirement age depends on birth year. It is 67 for people born in 1960 or later, and it is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. Because the exact FRA and dollar amount are personal, use your birth date and the estimates in your my Social Security account rather than relying on a general age or an example benefit.

SSA’s illustration of the permanent adjustment

The Social Security Administration’s publication When to Start Receiving Retirement Benefits illustrates the formula with a hypothetical $2,000 monthly benefit at FRA 67:

Claiming age Monthly amount in SSA’s example What the figure means
62 $1,400 Early-claiming amount, 30% below the $2,000 FRA example
67 $2,000 Full-retirement-age amount
70 $2,480 Delayed amount; about 77% more than the age-62 example

These are SSA’s stated example values, not a forecast for your earnings record and not a universal lifetime “break-even” calculation. Your estimates, taxes, investment returns, health, family benefits and lifespan can produce a different result.

Claiming Social Security is not the same as retiring

You can stop working and wait to claim, or claim while continuing to work. The choice affects both cash flow and the size of your eventual benefit.

Stop work, delay benefits

Leaving a job at 62 does not require you to file for Social Security. Savings, a pension or other income can bridge the period until FRA or 70. During the delay, the worker’s retirement benefit can grow through delayed-retirement credits, and additional covered earnings are no longer being added unless you continue working.

Work and claim before FRA

You may receive retirement benefits while working, but the earnings test can cause SSA to withhold benefits before FRA when your wages or net self-employment earnings exceed the annual limit. The test is separate from the formula used to calculate your underlying benefit.

Continue working and delay

Additional work can increase your benefit if a new year of covered earnings replaces a lower year in your highest-35-year record. If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, zero years are included; a later year can replace one of those zeros. This can make continued work valuable even when you are not relying on a paycheck for daily expenses.

How the 2026 earnings test affects people who claim while working

For 2026, SSA lists an annual earnings-test limit of $24,480 for a person who is under FRA for the entire year. In the calendar year you reach FRA, the limit is $65,160 for earnings received before the month you reach FRA. SSA applies its withholding formula to earnings above the relevant limit. Beginning with the month you reach FRA, the earnings test no longer reduces your benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
2026 situation Annual limit Important qualification
Under FRA for the entire year $24,480 Applies to earnings during that year under SSA’s 2026 rule
Year you reach FRA $65,160 Applies to earnings before the month you reach FRA
Month you reach FRA and later No earnings-test reduction Work does not reduce benefits under this test from that month forward

The limits are annual figures that can change. Recheck SSA’s current limits for the year you claim. If benefits are withheld before FRA, SSA says it recalculates the benefit after FRA to account for months in which checks were withheld; withholding is therefore not identical to losing those months permanently.

A practical comparison of claiming ages

Build a side-by-side comparison using the estimates in your my Social Security account for several start dates between 62 and 70. Do not compare only the first check. Compare the consequences that matter to your household.

Question Claim earlier Claim at FRA Delay toward 70
Cash flow Provides income sooner and may reduce withdrawals from savings. Starts the unreduced FRA amount. Requires another income source during the delay.
Later monthly income Lower worker benefit for life, subject to later adjustments. Middle point in the age-based adjustment. Highest worker retirement amount available by age 70.
Work before FRA Earnings test may withhold benefits above the applicable limit. Test ends when FRA is reached. No earnings-test reduction if you have not claimed yet.
Highest-35 record Filing does not stop later earnings from replacing lower years, but fewer additional years may be worked. More work may replace lower years. More time to add higher earnings years before filing.
Household protection May produce a smaller survivor or spousal foundation in some situations. Uses the FRA amount. A larger worker benefit may support a higher survivor benefit for an eligible spouse.

Household benefits can change the answer

Spousal and deemed-filing rules

If you qualify for both your own retirement benefit and a spousal benefit, deemed-filing rules generally link those applications. Eligibility timing and exceptions matter, so you cannot assume that filing for one benefit lets you postpone the other. Review your exact status with SSA, including whether you are married, divorced or eligible on a former spouse’s record.

Divorced-spouse benefits

A divorced person may qualify on a former spouse’s record if the statutory requirements are met. The interaction with your own retirement benefit, filing dates and deemed filing is fact-specific. Obtain an estimate for each potentially available benefit rather than applying a general rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Survivor benefits

Survivor benefits follow different filing rules. SSA says deemed filing does not apply to survivor benefits. In an applicable case, a surviving spouse may start a survivor benefit while allowing their own retirement benefit to grow, or use another sequence. That example does not mean every spouse can freely choose any sequence; eligibility, age and the two records must be checked.

The worker’s claiming decision can affect the surviving spouse. SSA’s publication explains that waiting longer can produce a higher survivor benefit, so the household comparison should include the income the survivor might need, not just the claimant’s cumulative checks.

Taxes belong in the claiming comparison

Social Security taxation depends on the whole federal tax return, not simply on your claiming age. IRS guidance says some benefits may be taxable when one-half of your Social Security benefits plus other income, including tax-exempt interest, exceeds the applicable base amount.

Filing status IRS base amount cited in current FAQ
Single, head of household or qualifying surviving spouse $25,000
Married filing jointly $32,000
Married filing separately Special rules apply

The IRS thresholds above were stated in its current FAQ accessed October 13, 2026. The taxable portion depends on the complete income picture, including withdrawals, wages, pensions and interest. A claiming age that looks attractive before tax can produce a different after-tax result. Use a tax professional or a careful projection of your own return before treating tax as a reason to claim early or late.

Medicare starts on a separate timetable

Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, not at your Social Security FRA. Delaying Social Security does not automatically delay Medicare obligations. If you are not receiving Social Security at 65, SSA says you may need to apply for Medicare separately.

People covered by an employer health plan should check how that coverage coordinates with Medicare and when Part B enrollment is required. Employer size, active employment and health-plan details can affect whether delaying Part B creates a penalty or coverage gap. Treat Medicare enrollment as a separate deadline in your retirement calendar.

A step-by-step method to choose a claiming age

  1. Confirm your FRA. Use your birth date and SSA’s current table; do not assume every worker has the same FRA.
  2. Record personalized estimates. In my Social Security, save the projected monthly amount at multiple ages from 62 through 70.
  3. Map your bridge income. List wages, pensions, cash reserves, taxable investments and other income available if you delay.
  4. Model continued work. Estimate whether earnings will exceed the 2026 limit or the limit in the year you claim, and whether new earnings could replace lower years in your 35-year record.
  5. Check household records. Identify possible spousal, divorced-spouse and survivor benefits, and ask SSA how deemed filing applies to your situation.
  6. Estimate after-tax cash flow. Include withdrawals and other income when assessing whether benefits may be taxable under IRS rules.
  7. Handle Medicare separately. Mark the month you turn 65 and verify enrollment and employer-coverage coordination.
  8. Stress-test longevity and care needs. Compare the value of income now with the value of a larger payment later, including the possibility that a spouse may rely on the higher worker benefit.
  9. Recheck before filing. Earnings-test limits, tax thresholds and administrative rules can change. Confirm current information with SSA and the IRS.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating 62, FRA or 70 as a universal answer. The best choice depends on your estimates, resources, family and health.
  • Using a generic break-even age. A break-even calculation changes with taxes, investment returns, marital status, survivor needs and lifespan assumptions.
  • Assuming claiming means you must stop working. You can work without claiming, claim while working, or combine work and a delayed claim.
  • Ignoring the earnings test. Before FRA, wages above the applicable annual limit can lead to withholding.
  • Overlooking the highest-35 rule. Additional earnings can replace lower or zero years, potentially raising the benefit.
  • Assuming spousal and survivor rules are identical. Deemed filing generally affects retirement and spousal applications, while SSA says it does not apply to survivor benefits.
  • Confusing FRA with Medicare age. Medicare generally begins at 65 and has its own enrollment decisions.
  • Repeating an old dollar limit. Earnings-test and tax figures are time-sensitive; use the limits for the year in question.

What a sound decision looks like

A sound decision documents the personal tradeoff instead of chasing a supposedly optimal age. It shows how much income the household needs now, what resources can fund a delay, how work changes the benefit record, which spouse or survivor benefits are at stake, and what taxes and Medicare require. SSA’s own publication puts the decision plainly: “Weigh all the facts carefully before making the crucial decision about when to begin to receive Social Security benefits.”

Start with your official estimates, test more than one claiming date, and obtain individualized advice when a spouse, former spouse, survivor claim, substantial earnings or complicated tax and health coverage makes the choice difficult.
