An electric car costs less to own than a comparable gas car when its cumulative savings in energy, maintenance and other running costs overtake any higher purchase, financing or setup costs. There is no universal break-even year: the answer depends on the vehicles, your mileage, local gasoline and electricity prices, charging mix, insurance, financing, resale value and eligibility for incentives.
For a U.S. buyer deciding today, calculate both vehicles over the period you expect to keep them. The electric vehicle (EV) breaks even in the first year its cumulative total cost becomes lower than the gas vehicle’s. Treat fuel savings as one input—not the complete ownership result.

What “cost less to own” should include
A useful comparison is total cost of ownership (TCO), not the sticker price or fuel bill alone. Use the same ownership period and include every major cash cost for both vehicles:
- Net transaction price after only the incentives for which you and that vehicle actually qualify.
- Loan interest and other financing costs.
- Sales tax, registration and recurring government fees.
- Insurance premiums based on quotes for your address and drivers.
- Gasoline for the combustion vehicle or electricity for the EV, including public-charging fees.
- Scheduled maintenance, tires and expected repairs.
- Home charging equipment and installation when needed.
- Expected resale proceeds or trade-in value at the end of the period.
Subtract the expected resale value from the costs paid during ownership. If depreciation estimates are uncertain, calculate a low and high case instead of presenting a precise year that the evidence cannot support.

Build an apples-to-apples vehicle comparison
Compare vehicles with similar size, capability, age and purchase condition. A new long-range electric SUV versus a used compact gas sedan can make the EV look artificially expensive or artificially cheap. Record the actual transaction prices you can obtain rather than a national average.
Use the same assumptions for both vehicles
- Choose one annual-mileage estimate and one ownership horizon, such as five, eight or 12 years.
- Use current local gasoline and electricity prices, then document the date and source of each figure.
- Use the same financing term and down-payment assumption, or compare cash prices for both.
- Obtain insurance quotes for the exact trims and drivers.
- Apply resale estimates at the same future date and mileage.
For an EV, also specify whether most charging will happen at home, at work or at public stations. A driver who regularly uses expensive DC fast charging has a different energy cost from one who charges overnight at home.
Calculate energy cost per mile
Start with a simple operating-cost calculation, then add the other ownership categories.

Gas cost per mile = local price per gallon ÷ the gas vehicle’s real-world miles per gallon. Multiply that result by annual miles and the number of years. Use observed or credible real-world fuel economy rather than an optimistic laboratory figure.

Home electricity
Home electricity cost per mile = local price per kilowatt-hour × the EV’s kilowatt-hours per mile. Include charging losses if your efficiency figure does not already include them. Add workplace or public charging at the rates you actually expect to pay.
A dated benchmark, not a promise
The U.S. Department of the Treasury reported that selected paired 2022-model-year vehicles cost about $120 in gasoline versus $60 in electricity per 1,000 miles. Those figures used $3.49 per gallon and $0.17 per kilowatt-hour residential electricity prices collected June 6, 2024. Your result changes when prices, efficiency, charging location or driving conditions change.
The Environmental Protection Agency lists 39 kWh per 100 miles as the median energy consumption for a typical model-year 2025 EV. The EPA describes that figure as an energy-consumption assumption for an emissions comparison tool, not a cost guarantee for any particular model.

- Set the scope. Write down your state, purchase date, new or used status, annual miles and expected ownership years.
- Select comparable vehicles. Record the exact trim, battery or engine, equipment, transaction price and expected delivery date.
- Determine net purchase cost. Subtract only verified incentives. Add taxes, registration and dealer or delivery charges consistently.
- Model financing. Enter the same down payment, term and interest-rate method for each vehicle. If rates differ because lenders price the vehicles differently, use actual quotes.
- Gather local energy inputs. Record gasoline price, residential electricity rate, time-of-use charges, workplace rates and public-charging prices. Estimate the percentage of miles supplied by each charging source.
- Compute annual energy cost. Apply the per-mile formulas to your annual miles and charging mix.
- Estimate maintenance and repairs. Use the manufacturer’s schedule, tire requirements and a conservative repair allowance. Do not assume an EV has no maintenance; it still needs tires, brakes, fluids and other service.
- Add insurance. Get quotes for both vehicles using the same coverage limits, deductibles and driver information.
- Add home-charging costs. Include a Level 2 unit, electrical work, permits and possible panel upgrades only if your situation requires them. Exclude the cost if suitable equipment is already available.
- Estimate resale. Enter a low and high future value when depreciation, battery condition or market demand is uncertain.
- Build cumulative totals by year. Add each year’s financing, energy, maintenance, insurance and fees to the initial net cost, then subtract the estimated resale value in the final year.
- Identify the crossover. The break-even year is the first year in which the EV’s cumulative total is lower than the gas vehicle’s. If the EV never crosses during your planned ownership period, it does not break even for that plan.
Which inputs move the answer most?
Purchase-price premium
A large upfront premium creates a bigger gap for operating savings to overcome. Compare transaction prices for the specific alternatives, not a broad average for all new cars. A used EV may have a smaller premium than a new one, while battery size, range and equipment can move prices substantially within the same class.

Annual mileage and time kept
Every mile driven applies the energy-cost difference, so high-mileage drivers can reach a crossover sooner. Someone who drives a few thousand miles a year or sells after two or three years may not recover a premium, charger installation or early depreciation. Model the ownership period you realistically expect, not an assumed 15-year life unless you truly plan to keep the vehicle that long.
Gasoline, electricity and charging location
The U.S. Department of Energy said in its 2024 calculator announcement that potential savings are greatest where gasoline is expensive, electricity is inexpensive and drivers travel longer distances. Home charging is often cheaper than public fast charging, but rates vary by utility, time of day and network. Include demand charges or special tariffs when they apply.
Vehicle efficiency
Compare the exact EV’s kWh-per-mile figure with the gas car’s real-world MPG. A heavy, high-performance EV can use much more electricity than an efficient small EV; an efficient hybrid or compact gas car can narrow the energy-cost gap. The EPA’s 39 kWh per 100 miles median is a reference point, not a substitute for model-specific data.
Maintenance and repairs
EVs generally have fewer engine-related service items, but maintenance costs are not automatically zero. Tires can be expensive, and collision or battery-related repairs can be costly. Gas vehicles have oil, exhaust and engine services that an EV does not. Use schedules and local estimates for the actual vehicles.

Insurance and financing
Insurance can offset part of an EV’s energy savings if the EV has a higher replacement cost or your insurer prices it differently. Financing matters twice: a higher amount financed increases interest, and a different rate changes the monthly and cumulative totals. Use quotes instead of assuming either vehicle receives the same rate.
Resale value
Resale is often the largest uncertain figure after purchase price. Battery age, warranty coverage, new-model pricing and used-EV demand can all affect future value. A range of resale assumptions is more honest than a single forecast; show how the break-even year changes in each case.

What published estimates can—and cannot—tell you

|---|---|---|
| Up to $2,200 annual fuel savings for a battery-electric vehicle | U.S. Department of Energy, 2024 calculator announcement | “Up to” is a modeled potential, not a guaranteed household result or a full TCO comparison. DOE identified higher gasoline prices, lower electricity prices, longer distances and older, less-efficient vehicles as conditions that increase savings. |
| $1,750 average annual fuel and maintenance savings; $21,000 discounted savings over a typical 15-year life | U.S. Department of the Treasury, 2024 release | The estimate reflected 2024 assumptions and the then-current clean-vehicle upfront discount. It is not a universal current EV-versus-gas result. |
| $120 gasoline versus $60 electricity per 1,000 miles | Treasury comparison of selected paired 2022-model-year vehicles | Used $3.49/gallon gasoline and $0.17/kWh residential electricity values collected June 6, 2024. It does not represent every model or location. |

Use a calculator without mistaking it for a buying decision
The Department of Energy’s local fuel-savings calculator asks for your location and vehicle details such as size, model year, fuel economy and annual mileage. Its output addresses fuel savings. Add purchase price, financing, insurance, maintenance, charging equipment, taxes and resale to turn that result into a TCO comparison.
For a practical worksheet, create one column for the EV and one for the gas vehicle, with rows for initial price, financing, taxes, insurance, energy, maintenance, charger setup and resale. Add a low-cost and high-cost case for electricity, gasoline, repairs and resale. The result should be a range such as “breaks even between years six and eight,” not a false precision based on uncertain inputs.
Illustrative break-even example
Consider a hypothetical comparison, not a market forecast. Suppose the EV costs $7,000 more after verified incentives, requires $1,500 of charging work, and saves $1,500 per year in combined energy and maintenance. Ignoring financing, insurance and resale for the moment, the initial gap is $8,500 and the simple crossover is about 5.7 years ($8,500 ÷ $1,500). If the EV later loses $3,000 more in resale value than the gas car, the gap becomes $11,500 and the simple crossover moves to about 7.7 years. Higher public-charging use, higher insurance or lower annual mileage would push it later; cheaper home electricity, more miles or stronger resale would pull it earlier.
Real calculations should restore every omitted category and use your actual quotes. The example demonstrates why a fuel-only answer can be materially different from a complete ownership answer.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Using an expired credit. Older articles may assume a federal credit that is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
- Comparing unlike vehicles. Match class, capability, age and purchase condition before comparing costs.
- Using national averages. Local electricity tariffs, gasoline prices, taxes, insurance and labor rates can change the result.
- Counting only fuel savings. Include financing, maintenance, insurance, charger installation and resale.
- Ignoring charging mix. Public fast charging can cost much more than home charging.
- Assuming the EPA median fits your model. Use the specific vehicle’s energy-consumption rating and your driving conditions.
- Hiding uncertainty. Show ranges for resale, repairs, energy prices and annual mileage.
- Calling a short-term saving a lifetime result. A two-year owner and a 12-year owner can reach opposite conclusions with the same vehicles.
Decision checklist
- Have you selected genuinely comparable EV and gas vehicles?
- Are the transaction prices current for your location?
- Did you verify every incentive and its acquisition-date rule?
- Do your energy calculations use local prices and the expected home/work/public mix?
- Did you obtain insurance and financing quotes?
- Did you include maintenance, tires, repairs, taxes, registration and charger installation where applicable?
- Are resale values shown as a range?
- Does the EV break even before you expect to sell it?
