RBI’s failed-payment rules provide ₹100 a day for specified transaction failures; other reported rules cover delayed credit-card closure, return of loan property documents and credit-report disputes. A locker-loss limit is different: it is not a per-day delay payment.
Which delays may lead to compensation?
The deadline and remedy depend on what went wrong. The table separates the five situations commonly grouped together, including the locker example that does not pay by the day. For the credit-card, property-document, credit-information and locker figures, the source is ET Online’s 2026 reporting; those figures are reported rules, not independently verified here against the underlying current RBI directions.

| Situation | Reported or applicable deadline | Remedy described | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specified failed digital payments | T+1 or T+5, depending on transaction type | ₹100 per day after the applicable deadline | RBI’s 2019 framework says compensation for covered failures should be credited automatically. |
| Credit-card closure | Seven working days, as reported | ₹500 per calendar day after the deadline | ET Online reports this rule; check the current direction and how it applies to your request. |
| Return of original property documents after loan repayment or settlement | More than 30 days, as reported | ₹5,000 per day for a delay attributable to the lender | ET Online describes this as arising under RBI guidelines dated September 13, 2023. |
| Credit-information dispute | More than 30 days, as reported | ₹100 per calendar day | Responsibility, the start of the clock and applicable rules depend on the dispute. |
| Loss of items in a bank locker | Not a processing-delay deadline | Reported liability cap of 100 times annual rent | This is a reported limit for loss, not a daily compensation amount. |
1. Failed digital payments: the deadline depends on the transaction
RBI’s September 20, 2019 circular sets transaction-specific reversal timelines for covered failed transactions. In that framework, compensation is due at ₹100 per day once the applicable deadline is exceeded. The table below distinguishes the examples covered by the circular; it is not a rule that every UPI or card problem has the same deadline.
| Failure described by RBI | Reversal period | Compensation if late |
|---|---|---|
| ATM cash was not dispensed, but the account was debited | By T+5; working-day counting was addressed in a 2021 modification | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
| Card-to-card transfer failure | By T+1 | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Listed failed IMPS or UPI fund transfer | By T+1 | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Listed PoS failure | By T+5 | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
| UPI payment where the customer’s account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation | By T+5 | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
Here, T means the transaction date. Follow the day-counting convention applicable to the specific transaction and the relevant RBI direction; do not treat all the periods above as interchangeable.

When should the failed-payment compensation arrive?
The RBI circular says that, where financial compensation applies, it should be credited suo motu—on the bank’s own initiative—without waiting for the customer to complain or claim it. That automatic-payment rule relates to the failures covered by the circular; it should not be assumed to govern the other situations in the table.
What if the payment was unauthorized?
A transaction you did not authorize is not automatically the same as a failed transaction. RBI’s separate unauthorized-electronic-transaction directions make customer liability depend on responsibility and reporting time. They provide for zero customer liability in specified cases, including certain bank-fault cases and third-party breaches reported promptly. Use that separate framework when the issue is fraud or an unauthorized debit, rather than relying only on the failed-payment deadlines.
2. Credit-card closure: a reported seven-working-day limit
ET Online reported in 2026 that delayed credit-card closure may attract ₹500 per calendar day after seven working days. The article’s report is not a substitute for checking the underlying RBI direction and any later changes. Keep the closure request, the issuer’s acknowledgement and evidence of when the account was actually closed so the dates can be assessed.

3. Return of property documents after repaying a loan
ET Online’s 2026 report describes a ₹5,000-per-day remedy if a lender takes more than 30 days to return original property documents after full repayment or settlement, where the delay is attributable to the lender. It attributes the rule to RBI guidelines dated September 13, 2023. Preserve proof of repayment or settlement, the list of documents held by the lender and your written request for their return. Check the current RBI text and the facts behind any delay before treating the reported amount as automatically payable.

4. Credit-report correction: identify who must resolve the dispute
ET Online reported ₹100 per calendar day for an unresolved credit-information dispute beyond 30 days. The responsible party and the start of the 30-day period matter; the reported figure alone does not establish who owes compensation in an individual case. Keep a copy of the dispute, the credit report showing the error, acknowledgements and replies, and confirm the governing direction before making a claim.
5. Locker loss is not a daily delay penalty
The locker example concerns liability when items are lost, not a bank taking too long to process a request. ET Online reported a liability cap of 100 times the locker’s annual rent. That figure is not a per-day amount and should not be presented as one of the daily delay payments. The applicable facts and current rules need to be checked for a particular loss.

Keep a dated record
- For a transaction, save the reference or UTR, account statement showing the debit, payment alert and any merchant confirmation or failure message.
- For a closure, document request dates and the bank’s acknowledgement. For loan documents, keep repayment or settlement proof and an inventory or list of the originals held.
- For a credit-report dispute, retain the report, the correction request and all replies. For any issue, save follow-up correspondence and note the dates.
Complain to the bank in writing first
State what happened, when it happened, the relevant transaction or request reference, the remedy you are seeking and the records supporting it. Keep the complaint acknowledgement and the bank’s response.
