Start by treating AI as a change to your tasks, not an automatic verdict on your occupation. List the work you actually do, identify which parts software can already assist with, and separate those from duties requiring judgment, relationships, accountability, physical presence or local knowledge. Then discuss the changes with your employer, build skills tied to a specific next role, and prepare income and job-search options before a crisis. If your position is eliminated, use public employment services, benefits agencies and retraining support in your jurisdiction as soon as possible.
AI exposure is not the same as a prediction that your job will disappear
The International Labour Organization (ILO) distinguishes between a job’s exposure to generative AI and the eventual outcome for the worker. Its 20 May 2025 occupational-exposure explainer assesses the potential automation of individual tasks and aggregates those scores by occupation. It finds that few jobs consist of tasks that current generative AI can fully automate. Because most occupations still require human input, transformation of jobs is the most likely impact of GenAI

That does not make disruption harmless. An employer may reduce headcount, change schedules, deskill a role or expect the same employee to produce more with AI. ILO economist Janine Berg wrote on 9 October 2024 that the realist view, first and foremost, acknowledges that the outcomes are not set in stone.
Exposure estimates are not counts of people already displaced or guarantees about an individual’s future.
For context, the ILO’s 2024 estimates put 2.3% of global employment—about 75 million jobs—at high risk of automation from generative AI. In high-income countries, the estimate was 5.1%, or about 30 million jobs. The article also reported that women were 2.5 times as exposed as men, largely because women are concentrated in clerical support work. These figures describe estimated exposure, not certain realized job losses.

Step 1: Map the tasks in your current role
Job titles hide the parts of work that are actually changing. Make a two-column inventory covering a typical week.

Do not assume a task belongs in one column forever. Note the tools your employer already uses, the quality checks they require and the consequences of an error. A task that appears easy to automate may still require a person to verify facts, protect confidential information or make a legally or financially consequential decision.
Use the task map to identify three scenarios
- Augmentation: AI handles a first draft or routine analysis while you review, correct and deliver the result.
- Role redesign: Some duties disappear, but new duties—workflow design, quality control, client communication or exception handling—are added.
- Displacement: The employer removes the role or cannot offer enough work after changing the process.
Write down evidence for each scenario: announcements, pilot projects, changes in performance targets, software purchases, vacancies being frozen or new skills appearing in job postings. This turns a vague fear into a decision you can revisit.

Step 2: Talk with your employer before decisions are final
Ask for a practical conversation with your manager, human-resources team or worker representative. The goal is to learn how work is changing and to make your contribution visible, not to promise that you can prevent automation.

Questions to ask
- Which tasks or outputs are expected to change in the next six to 12 months?
- What work will remain important, and how will quality or performance be measured?
- Which AI systems are approved, and who is responsible for checking their outputs?
- What training, paid practice time or mentoring will be available?
- Could duties, hours or teams be adjusted so experienced staff can move into emerging work?
- Are there internal vacancies, redeployment options or a transition timetable?
The ILO identifies internal redeployment as one way to avoid job loss. Its discussion of the Termination of Employment Recommendation, 1982 (No. 166), encourages employers and workers to explore measures such as adjusted working hours and hiring policies, with consultation, before termination where possible. Keep notes of answers and follow up in writing so that commitments and dates are clear.
Make your value legible
Document outcomes rather than only duties: errors prevented, customers retained, processes improved, revenue protected, staff trained and difficult cases resolved. Show where your judgment, context or relationships made the result possible. This evidence helps with an internal move and later becomes material for a résumé or interview.
Step 3: Build skills that lead to a specific next step
Begin with AI literacy, but do not stop at a generic course. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) framework describes foundational AI literacy as a starting point and recommends visible progression to specialized training, job-specific tools and career advancement.

- Foundational literacy: Learn what the systems used in your field can and cannot do, common failure modes, privacy and security risks, and how to verify an output.
- Role-specific practice: Apply an approved tool to real tasks in a controlled way. Measure time saved, error rates and review work; never put confidential data into an unapproved service.
- Complementary expertise: Develop capabilities that make AI useful rather than merely operating it. The OECD’s work highlights creative and social intelligence, reasoning and dealing with uncertainty.
- Recognized progression: Choose a credential, apprenticeship, supervised project or portfolio that employers in your area actually request.
Complementary skills are not an “automation-proof” guarantee. They improve your options because many employers still need people to set goals, handle exceptions, explain decisions and take responsibility for outcomes.

Test a course before paying or resigning
- Read recent local job postings and list the exact tools, credentials and experience they request.
- Confirm total time, cost, prerequisites, accessibility, schedule and whether training is paid.
- Ask how assignments are assessed and whether graduates receive a work sample, credential or placement support.
- Check the provider’s outcome definitions. “Employed” may include a different occupation, temporary work or a result measured at a particular date.
Step 4: Choose an adjacent route with a decision framework
Most workers have more than one possible next move: remain in the occupation with redesigned duties, transfer to a related role or retrain for a different field. Compare options against the same criteria instead of choosing the most fashionable AI job.

Score each route with evidence from vacancies, informational interviews and public labor-market data. If a route fails on job quality or accessibility, a short training course will not fix the underlying problem.
Step 5: Prepare a transition plan while you still have income
- Set a trigger: For example, a formal automation announcement, a hiring freeze, a major duty change or a performance target you cannot meet without new training.
- Update your résumé and profiles: Describe measurable results, tools used, decisions made and transferable skills. Keep versions aimed at your current occupation and each adjacent route.
- Create work samples: A documented process improvement, quality-check protocol, analysis or customer case can demonstrate ability better than a course certificate alone.
- Expand contacts: Speak with former colleagues, professional associations, unions, local employers and public career advisers. Ask what entry-level candidates actually do in the target role.
- Protect cash flow: Review essential expenses, emergency savings, debt payments and health coverage. Do not assume a future benefit or training allowance will be available until the responsible agency confirms eligibility.
In the United States, the DOL framework says workforce agencies may integrate AI literacy into Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) services and career navigation. Availability, funding and eligibility vary by state and local area, so contact your public workforce agency rather than assuming a national entitlement.
If your job is eliminated: act quickly on income and services
Apply promptly for unemployment insurance or other income support available in your jurisdiction, and ask the same agency about retraining, job-search assistance, transportation, childcare, disability accommodations and career counseling. The ILO describes social protection, reskilling and upskilling as measures that can give displaced workers time to find quality reemployment. OECD guidance similarly calls for training over working life, support for displaced workers and access to new labor-market opportunities.

Keep copies of the termination notice, pay records, training approvals and applications. Deadlines can be short, and a benefit may require registration before training begins. A union, worker center or legal-aid service can help explain consultation, severance or discrimination rules that apply locally; those rights differ by country and contract.

Programs are location-specific. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower describes the Career Conversion Programme and SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme as pathways that combine training with career transition or matching support. It reported that close to nine in 10 participants aged 51 and above remained employed 24 months after starting the Career Conversion Programme, measured among that participant group over the preceding five years. That is a program-specific outcome, not a general success rate for retraining and not evidence that the same program is available elsewhere.
Readers outside Singapore should look to their national or regional labor ministry, public employment service, unemployment-benefit agency, union and employer training resources. Verify the current name, eligibility, location, funding and outcome measure before relying on any program.

- Waiting for certainty: By the time a role is formally eliminated, internal training and redeployment windows may have closed.
- Learning a tool without a job target: A certificate has little value if local employers do not use the skill or recognize the credential.
- Calling yourself “AI-proof”: Every occupation can change; emphasize adaptability and evidence instead.
- Ignoring quality and safety: Faster output is not better if it introduces confidential-data breaches, bias, fabricated information or regulatory violations.
- Quitting before checking support: Voluntary resignation can affect benefits and removes access to employer-paid training in some systems.
- Measuring only salary: A route with higher advertised pay may have unstable hours, expensive training, long travel or barriers that make it unsustainable.
A 30-day action checklist
- List the 10 to 20 tasks that occupy most of your workweek and mark evidence of AI change.
- Schedule a documented conversation with your manager or worker representative.
- Collect five local job postings for roles that could use your experience.
- Identify the common tools, credentials and human capabilities those postings request.
- Select one low-risk, approved practice project and one recognized training route.
- Update your résumé with measurable achievements and create one work sample.
- Contact your public workforce or career service and confirm eligibility rules before paying for training.
- Review essential expenses and identify the documents you would need for benefits.
The practical objective is not to predict exactly what AI will do. It is to keep multiple viable paths open: improve the role you have, move inside the organization, transfer to an adjacent occupation or use public and workplace support to retrain after displacement.

Usually not. First ask about the timetable, training, redeployment and any effect on benefits or severance. Resign only after you understand the financial and legal consequences and have a realistic next step.
