Treat any deposit as money you can afford to lose—not money needed for bills, emergencies, or savings goals. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) puts it plainly: “All speculation involves risk.”
How prediction-market contracts work—and what the price means
Many event contracts are structured as swaps and ask a yes-or-no question. A contract commonly has a fixed payout, usually $1, and expires at a specified time or when the event concludes. Other markets may offer multiple outcomes or partial-payout ranges, so the terms of the specific contract matter.

A contract price reflects what buyers and sellers are willing to trade at; it is not a guaranteed probability or return. In the CFTC’s illustration, a 70-cent “yes” contract that pays $1 if the event occurs produces 30 cents of gross profit before fees and taxes. If the prediction is wrong, the buyer loses the amount invested in that position. The example describes a possible payoff, not a prediction about actual market outcomes. CFTC consumer guidance
What can go wrong after you deposit?
You can lose the amount paid for a position
If the contract settles against your position, you can lose the amount you paid. A fixed, clearly defined payout does not make a contract safe: the outcome may be uncertain, and the position can still lose its full purchase amount.

Fees and taxes reduce returns
Commissions, other fees, penalties, and taxes can change the break-even point and reduce any gain. Check the current fee schedule for the platform and contract rather than relying on a fee figure quoted elsewhere. Include applicable costs in your calculation before trading. CFTC consumer guidance
An early exit may be costly—or unavailable at a useful price
You may be able to sell or otherwise trade out before settlement, but the price will be the current market price. An order being accepted does not guarantee that it will fill immediately or at a favorable price. Some complex contracts may have fewer participants and lower liquidity, making it harder to exit without accepting a substantial price concession. Check bids, asks, and market depth for the contract you are considering. CFTC consumer guidance

The settlement rules may not match the headline
A familiar-sounding event description is not a substitute for the contract rules. Those rules determine how the event is defined, what evidence or source is used to resolve it, who makes the settlement determination, and when the contract expires. Read them before buying; a headline can sound broader or simpler than the outcome the contract actually measures. CFTC consumer guidance

CFTC-regulated exchanges and intermediaries are subject to oversight and applicable rules; certain intermediaries must follow customer-fund protection requirements. The protections depend on the regulated entity and how your account is arranged. Regulation does not prevent a position from losing money, and protections are not identical for every account. The CFTC warns that unregistered entities outside the United States may provide little or no protection. CFTC consumer guidance

Market-integrity violations can affect confidence in a market
Fraud, manipulation, wash sales, and misuse of nonpublic information are among the practices that can undermine market integrity. In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC Enforcement Division described two cases handled by Kalshi: a candidate apparently traded a contract on their own candidacy, and a YouTube-channel editor likely traded with advance knowledge of videos. Kalshi imposed penalties and suspensions in both cases. The examples establish that such incidents have occurred; they do not establish how common they are. The CFTC says it can police illegal trading practices on designated contract markets and notes exchanges’ audit-trail, surveillance, and enforcement duties. CFTC enforcement advisory
Scams and counterfeit apps can target would-be traders
Be wary of pitches promising large payoffs or “free money,” celebrity endorsements, glowing reviews, or recommendations from a recent online acquaintance. Verify that the website and app belong to the claimed entity; one practical check is to follow an app link from the entity’s official website. CFTC consumer guidance

Repeated deposits can push you past your limit
Set a firm amount you are willing to risk before trading, and do not use money needed for living expenses or savings. Promotional prompts or the urge to recover a loss can encourage larger deposits than you intended. Keep your limit independent of what a platform makes available to deposit. CFTC consumer guidance

What to check before funding an account
- Confirm the operator and your eligibility. Identify the precise legal entity, verify its registration through appropriate official information, and check whether its services are available where you live. Do not assume one platform’s status applies to another; the CFTC advises using registered entities and cautions about unregistered offshore operators. CFTC consumer guidance
- Read the exact contract rules. Find the event definition, resolution source, settlement decision maker, deadline, and payout. Make sure the wording describes the outcome you intend to trade, not merely a similar headline. CFTC consumer guidance
- Calculate the total cost and loss you can tolerate. Review the current fee schedule, account for commissions and other charges, and consider taxes. Determine the amount at risk if the position settles against you before placing an order. CFTC consumer guidance
- Assess the exit before relying on one. Look at current bids and asks and available market depth. Consider whether an early sale would require accepting a much worse price than you paid; do not base your plan on being able to exit at a fair or guaranteed price. CFTC consumer guidance
- Understand the account arrangement. Read the account agreement to learn how customer funds are handled, what protections apply to your account, how you can access funds, what statements or records you receive, and how to submit a complaint. Customer-fund rules and safeguards vary with the entity and account structure. CFTC consumer guidance
- Review integrity rules and conflicts. Check prohibitions on trading with confidential information or influence over an outcome, and understand what surveillance and enforcement measures the operator describes. CFTC enforcement advisory Kalshi market-integrity policy
- Verify the site or app before entering payment details. Use the operator’s official website to confirm its app and account links rather than relying on an unsolicited message or a search result alone. CFTC consumer guidance
