Do not turn an “overvalued” reading into an automatic sell order. Valuation measures can signal that prices are high relative to certain fundamentals, but they cannot tell you when a decline will begin or how large it will be. Use the warning to review your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification and portfolio weights. If market gains have pushed you away from your intended allocation, rebalance according to a written plan while accounting for taxes and trading costs.
What “overvalued” actually means
A market is described as overvalued when a price-based measure looks high compared with a historical range, company earnings, economic output or another fundamental yardstick. That is a statement about relative pricing, not a calendar prediction. A high reading can persist through a long bull market, and a market can fall before a measure returns to an earlier average.

Different indicators answer different questions:
Shiller CAPE
The cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio (CAPE) compares current stock prices with the average earnings per share from the previous 10 years, adjusted for inflation. The long earnings window is intended to smooth recessions and unusually strong or weak profit years. It also creates limitations: the measure is backward-looking, and changes in accounting practices, corporate share buybacks and the composition of the market can affect comparisons across decades.

Buffett Indicator
The Buffett Indicator compares the total value of publicly traded stocks in a country with that country’s gross domestic product. It relates the market’s aggregate value to the size of the economy, but it is not a direct measure of what any individual company or portfolio is worth. Global company revenues, interest rates, profit margins and the mix of listed and privately held businesses can all influence the relationship.

Charles Schwab’s January 27, 2026 explanation says valuation measures are useful for historical context but cannot accurately forecast the next market move or precisely time entry and exit. Its CAPE chart runs through November 28, 2025; that date matters, because a chart ending then is not a live valuation reading for every later trading day.
Why a high valuation is not a sell signal
Valuation can indicate that expected future returns may be less attractive than they were at cheaper prices, but it does not identify a reliable exit date. Vanguard’s guidance puts it plainly: “High valuations are not a market timing tool; instead, they are a useful signal warning us of market risks.” The same article says no one can predict the timing or magnitude of a correction.
That uncertainty creates two risks when investors react impulsively:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Exiting too early: you may miss additional gains while waiting for a decline that does not arrive on your schedule.
- Re-entering too late: after a fall, fear can make it difficult to buy back in, particularly if prices recover before the news feels reassuring.
Investor.gov summarizes the broader principle as: “It’s time in the market that counts, not timing the market.” That does not mean holding every investment forever. It means changes should be tied to your plan and circumstances rather than to a single headline or indicator.
Start with the purpose of the money
Asset allocation should follow the goal, time horizon and risk tolerance for the account. Money needed for a near-term objective generally should not carry the same stock-market risk as money intended for a distant objective. A high valuation does not change that basic match.

Identify the goal and deadline
- List what each account is intended to fund, such as living expenses, education, a home purchase or retirement.
- Record when the money may be needed and whether the date is flexible.
- Separate essential spending from money that can remain invested through a prolonged decline.
Measure your ability to absorb a loss
Risk tolerance is your emotional willingness to endure losses; risk capacity is your financial ability to do so without derailing the goal. A portfolio that looks acceptable on a statement may be unsuitable if a drop would force you to sell to pay a near-term bill. Conversely, a long-horizon investor with stable income may be able to tolerate fluctuations that would be inappropriate for a short-term reserve.
Write down a target mix
Define the intended percentages for major asset categories before deciding whether the market looks expensive. The target can include stocks, bonds and cash, along with any other category that is appropriate for your plan. There is no single stock-to-bond mix that fits everyone; the correct target depends on the circumstances above.
Check whether the portfolio has drifted
Market gains can silently increase your exposure. Investor.gov illustrates the idea with a hypothetical portfolio whose stock share rises from 60% to 80% after stocks outperform. Those figures are an example, not a recommended allocation. The key question is whether your actual percentages still match the targets you selected for the goal.
- Calculate the current dollar value of each major asset category.
- Divide each category by the total portfolio to obtain current percentages.
- Compare those percentages with your written targets.
- Look through funds and accounts for overlapping holdings, sector bets and large positions in one company.
- Decide in advance what amount of drift will trigger action, if any.
Concentration can arise even when you own several funds. A fund focused on one industry is not necessarily broadly diversified, and multiple funds may own many of the same companies. Diversification spreads risk among holdings and asset categories, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Choose a response that fits the plan
Once you know the goal, target mix and current exposure, select the least disruptive action that restores an appropriate risk level. These approaches are not rankings; suitability depends on your account, timeline and tax situation.

| Approach | How it works | Risk and maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Continue the plan | Keep the existing allocation and scheduled contributions when it still matches the goal and tolerance for loss. | Maintains market exposure and avoids a timing decision, but does not reduce an allocation that has become too large. |
| Direct new contributions | Send incoming money toward categories that are below target rather than selling appreciated holdings immediately. | Can reduce drift with fewer trades; the correction depends on contribution size and the gap. |
| Rebalance by selling overweight assets | Sell enough of an overweight category and buy underweight categories to restore the target mix. | May create transaction fees and taxable gains in a taxable account; it restores risk rather than forecasting returns. |
| Use a combined method | Apply new contributions first, then trade only what remains outside the chosen range. | Can limit turnover while still addressing larger deviations. |
| Use an automatic allocation fund | A target-date or lifecycle fund maintains an asset allocation and rebalances automatically as its design specifies. | Reduces the need for manual decisions, but you still need to check that the fund’s strategy fits your goal and risk capacity. |
How to rebalance without trying to forecast the market
Rebalancing means “bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix,” according to Investor.gov. It is a risk-management process, not a prediction that one asset will fall or another will rise.

Calendar review
Review the portfolio on a regular schedule and rebalance when it is outside your rules. A calendar approach is easy to remember, but it can lead to trades even when the portfolio has barely moved.
Threshold review
Set a permitted deviation from each target and act only when a holding or category crosses that boundary. This focuses trades on meaningful drift, although it requires monitoring.
Combined review
Check on a schedule and trade only when a threshold is breached. This combines a predictable review date with a limit on unnecessary turnover.
Before placing an order, check the fund’s transaction costs, bid-ask spreads where relevant, account rules and the tax effect of realizing gains. In a taxable account, selling can create a taxable event; in any account, fees reduce the amount that remains invested. If the portfolio is inside a retirement account, the tax treatment may differ from a taxable brokerage account, so use the rules that apply to that account and your jurisdiction.

What a dated valuation comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Vanguard’s published discussion assessed U.S. stocks as overvalued by most of its measures while broadly viewing non-U.S. markets as fairly valued in that article’s publication context. It explicitly did not predict an imminent correction. Its performance illustrations used MSCI indexes for the 10 years ended December 31, 2024, so they describe a completed historical period rather than a current forecast.
One example cited a 1.4-times difference—$470 versus $334—for U.S. growth stocks compared with the broad U.S. market over that period, based on Vanguard calculations using relevant MSCI indexes. That is a historical illustration, not a promise that growth stocks will outperform or underperform next.
Use such comparisons to understand why diversification may matter, not to make a geographic switch solely because one region appears cheaper. A foreign market can remain cheap for structural reasons, and a highly valued market can continue rising.
Tax, fees and account details to check before changing investments
- Taxable gains: selling an appreciated holding may create a capital-gains tax liability.
- Trading costs: commissions, spreads, fund redemption fees or other charges can reduce the value of a rebalance.
- Account restrictions: workplace plans, retirement accounts and managed portfolios may have different exchange, withdrawal or transaction rules.
- Contribution timing: directing future deposits to underweight categories can sometimes reduce the need for sales.
- Documentation: keep the target allocation, review schedule and trigger rules so a stressful market does not rewrite the plan.
When the tax impact or concentration is substantial, a qualified tax or financial professional can help apply the rules to your specific account and location. The decision still belongs to your goals and circumstances, not to a generic market threshold.

Your stock allocation is above target
Use your stated rebalance method: redirect contributions, sell part of the overweight, or combine both. Do not increase or decrease the target merely because an indicator crossed a widely quoted level.
You own one company or sector heavily
Concentration creates a risk that a broad-market valuation measure will not capture. Review overlapping funds and employer-stock exposure, then decide whether reducing the position is necessary for the goal. Diversification lowers dependence on one holding but cannot eliminate losses.
You are tempted to move everything to cash
Write down the re-entry rule before selling. If you cannot specify when and how you would invest again, the move is likely an attempt to time two decisions—exit and re-entry. Investor.gov warns that leaving the market can mean missing gains while waiting to return.

- Record your tolerance and financial capacity for a temporary loss.
- Write the target percentages for the account.
- Calculate current percentages and identify drift or concentration.
- Review whether funds actually provide the diversification you expect.
- Choose calendar, threshold or combined rebalancing rules.

- Estimate taxes, fees and spreads before selling.
- Place only the trades needed to restore the target mix.
- Schedule the next review and keep the rules unchanged unless your life circumstances change.
Bottom line
An overvalued-looking market is a reason to inspect your portfolio, not a reliable signal to abandon it. Valuation measures provide context and a reminder that risk may be elevated; they do not provide a dependable sell date. Keep each account aligned with its goal, time horizon and tolerance for loss, correct concentration or allocation drift, diversify appropriately and rebalance with taxes and costs in view. That process manages the risk you can control without pretending to know when the market will turn.
