What to Do With RMD Money You Don’t Need

If you do not need the cash from a required minimum distribution (RMD), you still generally must take the distribution on schedule. After it leaves the retirement account, you can hold it, spend it, invest it in a taxable account, or—if you qualify—send it directly to charity as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). You generally cannot put the RMD itself back into another tax-deferred account or treat it as a tax-free Roth conversion.

The right choice depends on the distribution’s tax treatment, your liquidity needs, investment horizon, charitable plans, and the rules for the account that produced it. The IRS does not recommend a particular investment for unused RMD proceeds.

What an RMD is—and what it is not

An RMD is a minimum amount that must be withdrawn from certain retirement accounts each year after you reach the applicable starting age. It is a withdrawal requirement, not a requirement to spend the money. Once the distribution is complete, deciding what to do with the proceeds is a separate financial decision.

For a traditional IRA, the distribution is generally included in taxable income for the year you receive it, even if you leave the proceeds in a bank account or invest them elsewhere. Nondeductible contribution basis and specific exceptions can make some or all of a distribution nontaxable. Employer-plan distributions have their own rules, so do not assume an IRA treatment applies automatically to a 401(k), 457(b), or another plan.

An RMD amount generally cannot be rolled over into another tax-deferred account. That means you cannot take the RMD and make it a tax-free rollover to another IRA, and you should not describe the RMD portion as a tax-free Roth conversion. A conversion involving other eligible funds can have separate tax consequences, but the RMD itself is not rollover-eligible.

Four practical choices for money you do not need

Choice When it may fit Important check
Hold the proceeds in cash or a bank account You expect near-term spending, want an emergency reserve, or prefer to avoid market risk. Decide how much liquidity you need and how this cash fits with your broader reserves. No particular cash product is required by the IRS.
Invest outside the retirement account You do not need the money soon and your plan calls for continued investment. The proceeds generally cannot simply be rolled into another tax-deferred account. Consider risk, time horizon, diversification, taxes, and account costs.
Use the money for spending or debt You have planned expenses, a mortgage, credit-card balance, medical costs, or another liability. The distribution generally remains taxable even when the money pays an expense.
Make a direct QCD You are at least 70½, want to support an eligible charity, and have not already received the money. The transfer must be made directly by the IRA trustee to an eligible organization. Confirm the current-year limit, eligibility, and records.

Holding cash

Keeping the proceeds in cash can be sensible when the money will cover living costs, a planned large purchase, an emergency reserve, or a period when you do not want exposure to market declines. Treat the RMD as part of your overall cash plan rather than automatically moving it into a new investment. Review how much you already hold in readily available accounts and whether the RMD fills a genuine gap.

Investing in a taxable account

If the money is not needed for years, investing it outside the retirement account may preserve a long-term growth allocation. The investment decision is not determined by the fact that the cash came from an RMD. Use the same questions you would use for other taxable assets: how much volatility you can tolerate, when you may need the money, whether your holdings are diversified, and how taxes and account expenses affect the result. The available IRS guidance does not select a fund, security, or asset mix.

Spending or paying debt

Using the distribution for a planned expense can be the most efficient choice when it prevents new borrowing or reduces an existing liability. Paying a bill does not remove the income-tax event created by a taxable distribution, so include the RMD in your annual tax estimate before committing the full amount to spending.

Giving through a QCD

A QCD can be useful when charitable giving is already part of your plan. It can satisfy an RMD while keeping a qualifying amount out of adjusted gross income, subject to the rules and limits described below. A QCD is not a general-purpose way to move money to a family member, donor-advised arrangement, or personal account.

How to make a qualified charitable distribution

A QCD is a direct payment from an eligible IRA to an organization that can receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. You must be at least 70½ when the transfer is made. The distribution must go directly from the trustee or custodian to the charity; if the money is first paid to you, it does not follow the direct-transfer procedure.

  1. Confirm the account. Ask the custodian whether the IRA is eligible. The IRS description excludes an ongoing SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA from the standard QCD pathway.
  2. Confirm your age on the transfer date. You must have reached age 70½ when the QCD is made, not merely by the end of the tax year.
  3. Verify the recipient. Check that the organization is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. Obtain its payment instructions and legal name before initiating the transfer.
  4. Instruct the trustee to pay the charity directly. Do not have the custodian send the distribution to you first. Ask how the check or electronic payment will be made payable and delivered.
  5. Specify the tax year and amount. Make sure the payment is completed in the year for which you want it considered. Confirm the current annual exclusion limit with the custodian because limits are tax-year-specific.
  6. Keep documentation. Retain the custodian’s distribution record and the charity’s acknowledgment. The acknowledgment should identify the organization and amount and state whether you received goods or services in return.
  7. Report it correctly. A QCD that is excluded from income cannot also be claimed as a charitable contribution deduction. Give your tax preparer the custodian and charity records.

IRS Publication 590-B (2025) states: “A QCD will count towards your required minimum distribution.” That does not mean every charitable payment qualifies; the direct-transfer, account, age, recipient, and limit requirements still apply.

QCD limits and special rules

For 2025, Publication 590-B lists a $108,000 annual QCD exclusion. Confirm the limit for the year of your distribution before acting, because Congress can change thresholds and reporting rules. The publication also describes a $54,000 one-time election for certain split-interest entities, including a charitable remainder annuity trust, charitable remainder unitrust, or qualifying charitable gift annuity. That specialized election is not the standard direct-to-charity route and requires the statutory conditions.

Prior deductible IRA contributions made when you were age 70½ or older can reduce the amount of a QCD that is otherwise excludable. Therefore, do not assume the full nominal limit will always be available to you. Ask the custodian or tax professional to review your contribution history.

Tax questions to settle before choosing

How much of the distribution is taxable?

A traditional IRA distribution is generally taxable in the year received. If you made nondeductible contributions, your basis can make part of the distribution nontaxable under the applicable allocation rules. A qualifying QCD is another exception because the amount excluded from income is handled under QCD rules rather than treated as an ordinary taxable distribution. Your account type, contribution history, and other exceptions determine the result.

Can I put an RMD back into an IRA?

Generally, no. The RMD itself is not eligible for rollover into another tax-deferred account. Even if you intend to invest the money for retirement, you generally must use a taxable account after receiving it. Do not ask a custodian to label an RMD as a rollover or assume that depositing it into a Roth IRA makes the transaction tax-free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could the distribution affect other parts of my tax picture?

A larger income year can interact with federal income-tax brackets and other thresholds. The personal effects on state income tax, taxation of Social Security benefits, Medicare premiums, and similar programs depend on facts not established by the RMD rule alone. Review those effects using current official guidance or with a qualified tax professional before deciding whether to accelerate, defer, or redirect other income.

RMD timing and account-by-account rules

First-year deadline

First RMDs are generally due by April 1 of the year after you reach age 73. Later RMDs are generally due by December 31 each year. Delaying the first distribution until April 1 can put two RMDs into the following tax year: the delayed first payment plus that year’s regular payment. Consider the effect on your complete income picture rather than looking at either distribution in isolation.

Separate IRAs versus employer plans

For IRA owners, the RMD is calculated separately for each IRA, but you can generally take the combined IRA amount from one or more of your IRAs. RMDs from a 401(k), 457(b), and similar employer plans generally must be taken separately and cannot simply be combined across plans. Plan terms and employment status can affect employer-plan deadlines, so confirm the requirement with each plan administrator.

You remain responsible for taking the correct amount even when a custodian calculates an RMD. Compare the calculation with your prior-year-end balance, age, account type, and the applicable IRS table or plan statement. If you have several accounts, keep a written schedule showing which account will satisfy each amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if you miss an RMD?

The IRS describes a potential excise tax equal to 25% of an RMD shortfall. If you correct the shortfall within two years, the tax can be reduced to 10% under the current rules. A reasonable-error waiver may be available when you take corrective steps and file Form 5329 with an explanation. Relief is not automatic, so act promptly rather than waiting for a tax notice.

  1. Calculate the amount that should have been distributed and the amount actually received.
  2. Withdraw the shortfall as soon as possible, following the account’s procedures.
  3. Keep evidence of the correction and the reason for the mistake.
  4. Review the applicable Form 5329 instructions and ask a tax professional whether to request a waiver.

A decision process for unused RMD proceeds

  1. Take the required amount on time. Identify every IRA and employer plan, its deadline, and the amount assigned to it.
  2. Estimate the tax cost. Determine how much is likely taxable, including any basis or QCD treatment, and set aside cash for taxes if needed.
  3. Match the proceeds to a time horizon. Money needed soon belongs in a liquidity plan; money that can remain invested for years can be evaluated in your taxable portfolio.
  4. Check charitable intent before receiving the funds. If a QCD is appropriate, arrange the direct trustee-to-charity transfer before the distribution is paid to you.
  5. Coordinate with the rest of your income. Include wages, pensions, investment income, Social Security, conversions, and planned sales when considering the year’s total income.
  6. Document the result. Keep RMD calculations, custodian confirmations, charity acknowledgments, and tax forms together for the year.

Examples of how the choice can differ

Near-term reserve

A retiree with a planned home repair and limited liquid savings may keep the RMD in cash. The key question is not whether cash is universally best; it is whether the reserve meets a known need without forcing a sale of investments at an inconvenient time.

Long-term investment

An investor with several years before needing the money may place the proceeds in a taxable investment account. The investor must accept taxable-account treatment and choose investments based on risk, diversification, time horizon, and costs rather than trying to recreate a tax-deferred rollover.

Charitable giving

An owner who is at least 70½ and routinely gives to an eligible charity may request a direct QCD before receiving the funds. The owner should verify the year’s limit, obtain written acknowledgment, and avoid claiming a second charitable deduction for the amount excluded from income.

Questions to verify before you act

  • Which accounts are subject to an RMD this year?
  • What is the deadline for each account, and would delaying a first RMD bunch two payments into one tax year?
  • What portion of the distribution is taxable after considering basis or a QCD?
  • Will the proceeds be needed for spending, debt, reserves, or a long-term investment?
  • If giving to charity, is the recipient eligible and will the trustee pay it directly?
  • Have you checked current-year IRS limits and your state and federal tax implications?

RMD and QCD limits, reporting instructions, and related law can change. Use the IRS publication and forms for the year of the distribution, and obtain individualized tax advice when the account structure, charitable plan, or income effects are complicated.
