Be candid about condition. “Needs repair” is not the same as “ready for a family,” and a broken or contaminated item should not be passed to a charity as if it were usable. Photographing the item and its labels helps a recipient or collection service decide whether it is suitable.

Give good items away locally

Habitat for Humanity ReStore guidance generally looks for gently used or like-new furniture and home goods. Its general appliance guidance calls for appliances to be less than 10 years old, working, and supplied with their included parts. Local ReStores decide what they can accept and some offer pickup, so confirm with the individual center rather than assuming the general guidance guarantees acceptance.
For any organization, disclose recalled, unsafe, incomplete, stained, infested, or damaged goods. A refusal at the door is frustrating; an unannounced unsafe donation can create a disposal problem for the charity.
Recycle by material, not by guesswork
Use your city, county, council, or regional recycling locator to identify the correct outlet for each material. Check whether an item must be dismantled, emptied, cleaned, bundled, or taken to a special facility. Portland directs residents to Metro household hazardous-waste facilities for paint, chemicals, and cleaners. A San Diego-area moving guide also lists pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, batteries, and fluorescent tubes as household hazardous waste; that guide dates from 2018, so its procedures should not be treated as current or universal. - Keep products in their original, labeled containers when possible.
- Do not mix chemicals or transfer them into food or drink containers.
- Tell the service the product name, approximate quantity, and container condition.

Use an authorized route for bulky leftovers
Large furniture, mattresses, appliances, and piles of debris usually need municipal bulky collection, a waste facility, or a licensed private collector. Compare more than the headline price:
- Accepted materials and maximum dimensions
- Earliest pickup date and arrival window
- Whether you must move items outside or leave them inside

Protect data before giving away electronics or papers
Remove personal information from phones, computers, tablets, drives, printers, and smart devices before donation or recycling. Plan the calendar so the move does not fail
- Four or more weeks out: Set the selling cutoff, inventory every room, and contact donation centers, reuse organizations, and hazardous-waste services about rules and appointments.
- Two to three weeks out: List usable items for free pickup with firm deadlines. Book bulky collection or a licensed hauler if large items are unlikely to move through donation.
- One to two weeks out: Deliver confirmed donations, take recyclable materials to the correct outlet, and separate hazardous goods. Keep receipts or booking confirmations.
- Final week: Run the inventory again, remove data from electronics, and confirm every pickup. Do not leave anything in the rental or on public property.
- Move-out day: Photograph cleared rooms, storage areas, and any collection handoff. Take remaining authorized waste to the booked facility or complete the scheduled collection.
Pickup capacity can be limited. The WasteFreeSD guide published in 2018 reported waits of up to a month for some thrift-store pickups; that is a dated local planning example, not a current or universal wait time. Treat any promised collection date as something to verify, not a guarantee that every organization can meet.
Handle common failure points
The charity refuses the item
Do not argue or leave it outside. Ask whether another branch, reuse center, municipal program, or specialist recycler accepts it. If the item is unsafe, incomplete, or contaminated, use the appropriate disposal route.
A free recipient cancels
Contact the next interested person only if your listing terms allow it, or move to donation, bulky collection, or disposal before the cutoff. Do not keep an item in the home past the date needed to clean and hand over the property.
The collector cannot take everything
Ask what was excluded and why. Separate hazardous materials, electronics, recyclables, and oversized pieces, then book the service designed for each category. Never place excluded items in a general bin without checking local rules.

What the cheapest route really means
Free is not always lowest cost. A free pickup may require several messages, waiting at home, and help moving a heavy item. A donation drop-off may cost fuel and time but clear the room in one trip. Municipal collection may be inexpensive for eligible residents but have a long booking window. A private hauler may be fastest while charging more. Compare each option on acceptance, timing, effort, direct cost, likelihood of reuse or recycling, and authorization for the waste involved.
Use household items you already own for packing and transport where possible. Portland’s moving guidance specifically favors using available household materials and avoiding unnecessary new supplies.
Rules vary by location

Local authorities determine collection dates, fees, accepted materials, hazardous-waste procedures, and enforcement.
