Do not let a price drop make the decision for you. First determine whether one company, an industry, or the whole market fell; then test the investment against your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, concentration, cash needs, taxes, and trading costs. Holding, selling, rebalancing, and changing contributions can each be sensible in different circumstances, and no source cited here can guarantee that a particular stock will recover.
What should I do when my stocks lose value?
A falling price is information, not an instruction. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says a company may fail to grow and that investors can lose the money they invest. Prices can move because of company-specific developments or wider political and market events. A decline by itself therefore does not establish either a buying opportunity or a reason to sell.

- Identify the scope of the decline. Compare the stock with its industry and a broad market benchmark. A problem confined to one issuer calls for a different review from a market-wide selloff.
- Revisit why you own it. Write down the original reasons for buying, the assumptions behind them, and what new facts would invalidate them. Do not treat a lower quote as proof that the business is permanently impaired or certain to rebound.
- Check your portfolio structure. Measure the position against your intended allocation and look for unintended concentration in one company, sector, or asset category.
- Recheck your circumstances. Goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, income stability, and the amount of cash you may need should determine how much volatility you can accept.
- Compare the consequences of each action. Include taxes, commissions or spreads, account type, and the possibility that an order executes at a different price than expected.
This sequence follows SEC investor-education guidance to keep a plan aligned with your goals and risk tolerance rather than making major changes solely because markets are volatile.

| Possible action | When it may fit the plan | Important consequences to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hold | The investment case remains intact, the position fits your target allocation, and you can meet near-term cash needs without selling. | The price can fall further; holding is not a promise of recovery. Reassess if facts, goals, or risk capacity change. |
| Sell or reduce | The original thesis no longer applies, the position is too concentrated, your horizon has shortened, or you need liquidity and cannot bear further losses. | You lock in the loss, may owe taxes on other gains, and may incur fees or unfavorable execution. You also give up future participation if the price rises. |
| Rebalance | Market movements have pushed an asset category above its intended weight and you want to restore the allocation. | Rebalancing can mean selling overweight assets, buying underweight assets, or redirecting new contributions. Fees and tax effects matter. |
| Direct new contributions elsewhere | You want to move gradually toward target weights without immediately selling an overweight holding. | Contributions change future exposure but do not remove the existing position’s risk; review whether the portfolio can still meet your target. |
When holding is coherent
Holding can be reasonable when your written investment case still matches current facts, the position is diversified enough for your plan, and your time horizon allows you to tolerate substantial volatility. It requires the financial capacity to keep paying bills and meeting planned withdrawals without relying on a sale at an unfavorable price. Set a review date and specific conditions that would change your decision instead of monitoring every intraday move.
When selling or reducing is coherent
A sale may be justified when management, finances, competitive conditions, or another central assumption has changed; when one holding has grown or remained so large that it dominates portfolio risk; or when a shorter time horizon makes the original allocation inappropriate. Selling can also provide needed liquidity. The reason should be tied to the plan, not simply to discomfort caused by a red number.
When rebalancing is coherent
Rebalancing is a method for returning to an intended mix of stocks, bonds, cash, or other categories. The SEC describes three broad approaches: sell assets that are above target, buy assets below target, or direct new contributions to underweight categories. It is not a forecast that a losing investment must rebound. Before trading, estimate commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses, and any taxable gain or loss.
How do I know if a stock will recover?
No cited SEC source provides a stock-specific recovery test, recovery rate, or average recovery time. A price chart alone cannot tell you whether a decline is temporary or permanent. Instead, separate two questions:

- Has the investment case changed? Examine the business facts and the assumptions that supported ownership. If the reason for owning the security is no longer valid, waiting solely for the old price to return is not a plan.
- Can your portfolio and finances withstand more volatility? Even a sound company can experience a prolonged decline. Your allocation should reflect the loss you can financially and emotionally bear, not an assumed date of recovery.
For a broad market fall, selling every stock can create a timing problem. The SEC Investor.gov article “Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio?” states: “If you sell all of your stock assets when the market is down, you can lose a significant amount of money.” That warning does not mean every holding should be kept; it means an all-or-nothing reaction can permanently realize losses and move you away from your plan.
Should I hold or buy more when stocks fall?
Buying more is an allocation decision, not an automatic response to a discount. Consider additional purchases only after checking that the security still fits your investment case, the position will not become too concentrated, and you have adequate emergency cash and no higher-priority use for the money. A broad, diversified allocation may be easier to maintain than adding to a single-company position whose prospects are uncertain.
If you are following a recurring contribution plan, directing contributions to underweight categories can help restore target weights without an immediate sale. Keep records of the resulting cost basis and confirm that the change is consistent with your risk tolerance. Neither regular investing nor buying during a decline guarantees a profit.

The SEC defines asset allocation as choosing among categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. Diversification spreads money among investments to reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee gains or eliminate losses. A portfolio that was suitable for a retirement goal decades away may be unsuitable when withdrawals are close.

Shorter time horizon
If you will need the money soon, a large stock allocation can expose essential spending to a market decline. Review whether planned withdrawals can be met from cash or less volatile assets without forcing a sale.
Changed income or obligations
Job loss, a new debt payment, a large purchase, or a reduced emergency reserve can lower your capacity to bear losses even if your attitude toward risk has not changed.
Changed tolerance
If a decline causes you to abandon your plan, your actual risk tolerance may be lower than the level you selected. A measured allocation change can be more durable than repeatedly switching after each market move.

Can I claim a tax loss if I sell stock at a loss?
For U.S. taxable accounts, selling below your adjusted basis can create a capital loss, but the tax result depends on all of your transactions, holding periods, account details, and current law. IRS Publication 550 (2025), listed by the Internal Revenue Service on March 9, 2026, says that when net capital losses exceed capital gains, an individual generally may deduct the lesser of the total net loss or $3,000 for the tax year, or $1,500 if married filing separately. Unused losses generally carry forward to later years under the rules in that publication. The amount is a deduction limit, not a guaranteed refund and not a reason by itself to sell.

Watch the wash-sale rule
The same publication discusses wash-sale restrictions when you acquire substantially identical securities during the 30 days before or 30 days after a sale at a loss. A wash sale can defer or disallow the immediate deduction under the applicable rules. Include purchases in other accounts and transactions by a spouse when determining whether the rule may apply, and keep complete trade records. Because the rule is fact-specific, verify the treatment with the current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
Account and jurisdiction matter
Capital-loss rules generally concern taxable investing. Retirement accounts, state taxes, filing status, basis adjustments, and transactions in other jurisdictions can produce different results. The figures above are for the 2025 U.S. tax-year publication and should not be applied automatically to a later year or another country.

Order mechanics can change the result of a decision to sell. In a bulletin updated August 18, 2026, the SEC explains that when a stop order is triggered it becomes a market order. The execution price can therefore differ significantly from the stop price, especially in a fast or thin market. A stop-limit order may set a minimum or maximum price but carries a risk of not executing.
Recommended Free Tools
Before entering any order, read your brokerage’s current descriptions, trigger standards, trading-session rules, and fees. Ask which order types are available for the security and what happens during gaps or trading halts. A stop level is not a guaranteed sale price.

Common situations and the questions to ask
Only one company fell
Look for issuer-specific developments and test whether your original thesis survives them. Compare the position with your concentration limit. If the case is broken or the position is too dominant, reducing it can be a risk-control decision rather than a prediction about tomorrow’s quote.
An industry or the whole market fell
Check whether your target allocation has materially changed and whether your goals still support it. Avoid abandoning a diversified plan solely because of volatility; the SEC’s “Don’t Panic, Plan It!” article concludes, “Most importantly, whatever you do, don’t panic, plan it!” This is institutional education, not individualized advice.
You need cash soon
Prioritize liquidity. A stock that might recover eventually may still be unsuitable for money needed on a known schedule. Identify which assets can fund the need while keeping the remaining portfolio aligned with its purpose.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You are tempted to average down
Ask whether you would buy the same security today at its current price, independent of your old purchase price. If not, adding merely to lower your average cost can increase concentration without improving the investment case.
A practical review checklist
- Record the percentage and dollar change, and whether the move is company-specific, sector-wide, or market-wide.
- Write the current investment thesis and list facts that would disprove it.
- Calculate the holding’s percentage of your portfolio and compare it with your intended allocation.
- List goals, dates, withdrawals, emergency reserves, income risks, and debts that affect your capacity for loss.
- Model holding, selling, rebalancing, and redirecting contributions, including fees, spreads, taxes, and lost upside.
- For a U.S. taxable sale, check basis, realized gains and losses, wash-sale dates, and carryforwards under current IRS rules.
- Confirm the brokerage order type and understand that a stop order may execute far from its trigger price.
- Document the decision and schedule the next review instead of reacting to every quote.
When professional help is sensible
Consider an investment adviser, tax professional, or other appropriately qualified specialist when the position is a large share of your assets, a sale could create complex tax consequences, you are coordinating several accounts, or a major life change has altered your goals. Ask what they charge, whether they owe you a fiduciary duty for the service provided, and what assumptions support their recommendation. General education cannot account for your complete financial and tax facts.
A calm decision rule
Use the price decline as a prompt to review the investment and your life, not as the conclusion. Keep a holding only when its role, risk, and expected use of the money still fit your plan. Sell or rebalance when the thesis, allocation, liquidity requirement, or risk capacity calls for it, and complete the tax and execution checks before placing an order.
