1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf most of your retirement account is in cash, do not make a sudden all-or-nothing move. First identify exactly what the account calls “cash,” then separate money needed for near-term withdrawals from money intended to fund later retirement years. Set an allocation you can maintain through market declines, compare the diversified funds available in your plan, and change contributions or holdings deliberately after checking fees, taxes and plan rules.
Cash can stabilize a portfolio and preserve liquidity. Its long-term danger is purchasing-power loss: if prices rise faster than the return on your cash holding, the balance buys less. The right response depends on your retirement date, spending plan, other income, account type and ability to tolerate losses—not on a universal stock percentage.

Start by finding out what “cash” actually means
Look at your latest statement and the plan’s investment menu. “Cash” may be an uninvested settlement balance, a bank deposit, a money-market fund, a money-market deposit account, a certificate of deposit, Treasury bills or a stable-value option. These products can differ in yield, guarantees, liquidity, fees and the way their value changes. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lists deposits, CDs, Treasury bills, money-market deposit accounts and money-market funds among examples of cash equivalents in its asset-allocation guide.

- What is the legal name and ticker, if any, of the holding?
- Is the balance earning interest, and is the quoted rate fixed, variable or promotional?
- Are there withdrawal restrictions, surrender charges or limits on transfers?
- What expense ratio, account fee or plan-level fee applies?
- Is the balance the plan’s default for new contributions, or did you select it?
Do not assume that a holding labeled “stable” is guaranteed in every circumstance. Read the plan description and the fund prospectus or contract. You need to know what you own before deciding whether its role is appropriate.

Why keeping retirement money in cash can be both sensible and costly
What cash does well
Cash and cash equivalents generally have the least short-term price fluctuation among the three broad asset categories discussed by the SEC. That stability can be useful for a withdrawal you expect soon, for a known expense during the transition into retirement, or for money that would otherwise force you to sell a volatile investment during a market drop.
The inflation problem
The trade-off is lower expected growth. The SEC states: “The principal concern for investors investing in cash equivalents is inflation risk.” If your holding earns 3% while the cost of your regular spending rises 4%, your account has lost purchasing power even though its dollar balance increased. This is a risk over time, not a prediction about any particular year or interest rate.
Cash is not automatically “bad”
Whether cash is excessive depends on when you will spend the money and what other resources you have. A person beginning withdrawals next year may reasonably keep more in stable assets than someone with decades before retirement. A pension, Social Security benefit or other reliable income can also change how much portfolio volatility a household can withstand. No reviewed source establishes one reserve amount that fits every household.

Match the investment mix to your time horizon and risk capacity
Asset allocation is personal. SEC guidance says it changes with both your investing timeframe and your risk tolerance; its overview is available at Investor.gov.
Money needed soon
List withdrawals and obligations for the next several years: living expenses not covered by other income, taxes, health costs, a planned move or a required distribution. Money with a near spending date has little time to recover from a market loss, so stability may deserve priority. Keep this calculation separate from the rest of the account instead of treating the entire balance as one pool.
Money for later retirement years
Assets you will not need for many years have more time to recover from temporary declines. Growth-oriented investments may therefore have a role, but they can fall sharply and can remain below their previous value for extended periods. The longer horizon increases your capacity to take risk; it does not guarantee a profit.

Capacity versus willingness
Risk capacity is the financial ability to absorb a loss without jeopardizing essential spending. Risk willingness is how you feel when an account drops. Both matter. If a temporary loss would make you sell in panic, an allocation that looks attractive on paper may be unworkable. Conversely, avoiding every fluctuation can leave too little growth to support a long retirement.

Use the actual funds in your workplace plan or IRA. The categories below describe general roles, not a recommendation to buy a particular investment.
| Choice | Potential role | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cash and cash equivalents | Liquidity and stability for near-term spending | Returns may not keep pace with inflation; products differ in guarantees, fees and access |
| Bonds or bond funds | Generally less volatility than stocks, income and diversification | Usually more modest long-term returns than stocks; interest-rate, credit and other risks remain. High-yield bonds carry higher risk than investment-grade bonds |
| Stocks or stock funds | Long-term growth potential | Greater short-term volatility and possible losses; suitability depends on your capacity and willingness to bear risk |
| Diversified mutual funds or ETFs | Exposure to many securities through one investment | A fund name does not guarantee diversification; inspect holdings, concentration and overlap |
| Target-date fund | Professionally managed allocation and automatic rebalancing that typically becomes more conservative near a stated date | Target date, glide path, holdings, strategy and fees vary; “more conservative” does not mean risk-free or personally suitable |
When comparing options, check the investment objective, underlying holdings, volatility, fees, trading restrictions and how the choice fits with investments elsewhere. Two funds can own many of the same companies, creating more concentration than their labels suggest. A narrowly focused fund is not necessarily diversified.

How diversification should work
Diversification means spreading money across asset classes and also across securities within each class. A broad stock fund paired with a broad bond fund may provide wider exposure than several narrowly focused funds. Review the top holdings and the percentage invested in a single sector, company or country. The SEC’s explanation of allocation and diversification is at Investor.gov.
A target-date fund can simplify the process by selecting and rebalancing an investment mix for a stated retirement year. Before using one, compare its glide path, stock and bond percentages, fees, and whether the date represents the year you expect to begin withdrawals or the year you expect to stop working. Funds with the same target year can have materially different strategies.

A measured way to move out of excess cash
- Inventory the account. Download the statement, name every holding and note the current balance, yield, fees and restrictions. Confirm whether new contributions are also landing in cash.
- Separate near-term spending. Estimate withdrawals and obligations that must remain stable, considering other income and emergency savings. Keep only the amount justified by that plan in stable holdings; the evidence does not support a universal number of months or years.
- Write down your allocation constraints. Record years until withdrawals, expected retirement income, debt and emergency reserves, tax status, account type, and the largest temporary loss you could tolerate without selling. Include your reaction to a hypothetical market decline, not just your answer to a risk questionnaire.
- Screen the plan menu. Compare broad stock and bond funds, a target-date option if available, and any stable-value or cash choices. Read the expense ratio, plan administrative fee, investment objective, principal risks and holdings. Check for overlap with other accounts.
- Pick an implementation method. You can sell an overweight cash or other holding and buy underweight categories, direct new contributions to those categories, or change ongoing contributions gradually. The SEC describes calendar-based and allocation-band rebalancing approaches in its rebalancing guidance. Choose a rule in advance rather than changing investments in response to each headline.
- Review the result. Confirm that trades settled, future contributions use the intended funds and the resulting percentages match your written plan. Set a periodic review date or a predetermined tolerance band. Frequent tinkering can add costs and make your strategy harder to follow.
What changes inside a 401(k), IRA or other retirement account
Workplace-plan menus and fees
Employer plans differ in investment choices, matching formulas, recordkeeping charges and restrictions. The IRS says participant-directed plans such as some 401(k)s must offer at least three diversified options with different risk-and-return characteristics under the rules described on its plan-assets page. That requirement does not mean your plan offers every fund category or the lowest-cost option. Read the fee disclosure and ask the administrator how the match is invested.

Tax treatment is separate from allocation
Traditional accounts may provide a deduction and tax-deferred growth; Roth accounts generally use after-tax contributions and can provide tax-free qualified withdrawals. Employer plans and IRAs have different rules, and your personal circumstances determine the result. Changing funds within an account is generally different from taking money out of it. Review the account terms before assuming a trade creates a tax bill. The SEC summarizes account types at Investor.gov’s retirement-savings page.
Be careful with a distribution or rollover
If you are moving money out of a plan, stop and check current IRS rules or obtain tax advice before initiating the transaction. The IRS generally describes a 60-day rollover period for an eligible distribution paid to you. A taxable eligible rollover distribution paid by an employer plan is generally subject to 20% mandatory withholding; a direct rollover to another eligible account avoids that withholding. Required minimum distributions and some other distributions cannot be rolled over. Any amount not properly rolled over may be taxable, and someone under 59½ may owe an additional tax unless an exception applies. Details depend on the account, distribution and your facts; see IRS Topic No. 413.
Risks people overlook when they leave or exit cash
- Market-timing pressure: Moving the entire balance after a rally or a crash turns an allocation decision into a prediction. A written schedule or contribution change can reduce that temptation.
- Underestimating volatility: Large-company stocks, for example, have lost money on average about one out of every three years, according to an Investor.gov historical illustration. That is not a forecast or guarantee, but it shows why stock exposure requires a plan for bad years.
- Assuming bonds cannot fall: Bond funds can decline when interest rates rise, and credit-sensitive bonds can lose value when borrowers weaken.
- Ignoring fees: A small annual expense difference compounds over decades. Compare both fund expenses and plan-level charges.
- Counting overlapping funds as diversification: Several funds may own the same large companies or sectors. Examine holdings instead of relying on labels.
- Forgetting future contributions: A one-time trade will not fix an allocation if every paycheck continues buying the cash option.
- Confusing an allocation with guaranteed income: A defined-contribution balance is not guaranteed to be adequate for retirement. The SEC discusses this limitation in its lifetime-income guidance.
When individualized help is worthwhile
Consider advice from a qualified tax or financial professional if you are close to retirement, have several account types, expect a large withdrawal, are deciding between a rollover and leaving money in a plan, or cannot determine how much volatility your spending can tolerate. Bring statements, fee disclosures, beneficiary information, expected income and a list of planned withdrawals. Ask the adviser to explain fees, conflicts, tax consequences and the assumptions behind any proposed allocation.
The goal is not to eliminate risk. It is to keep near-term spending dependable while giving longer-term retirement assets a diversified, appropriately sized opportunity to grow—using investments and rules you understand well enough to maintain during both calm and difficult markets.
