First compare your current holdings with the allocation you intended to own, then confirm that the target still fits your goal, time horizon and tolerance for risk. If the target remains appropriate, rebalance deliberately—using contributions and income first when practical—while checking taxes and trading costs.
Start with a diagnosis, not a trade
A portfolio is “out of balance” when its current percentages differ materially from the percentages in your investment plan. A market move can create that difference even when you have not placed a single order. For example, if stocks fall faster than bonds, stocks become a smaller share of the account; if bonds or cash fall less, their shares rise. The reverse happens after a period in which stocks outperform. The market drop tells you what happened to prices, not whether your long-term plan is wrong.

Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward its chosen target allocation. Its purpose is to keep the risk exposure of the plan aligned with what you decided—not to guarantee a recovery, increase returns or predict which asset will rise next. Vanguard describes the discipline this way: “Rebalancing isn’t about market-timing; it’s about sticking to Vanguard’s principles for investing success and creating a strategy to stay in sync with your long-term goals.”

1. Reconfirm the target before changing holdings
Your target mix is only useful if it still reflects your circumstances. Write down the intended percentages for major asset classes, such as stocks, bonds and cash, and ask whether the reasons for choosing them are still true.

Check the goal and time horizon
A portfolio supporting a retirement decades away may be able to tolerate larger short-term swings than money needed for a home purchase or tuition soon. If the date or purpose of the money has changed, the appropriate allocation may have changed too. In that case, revise the plan intentionally rather than treating the latest market move as a signal.
Check risk tolerance and financial capacity
Risk tolerance is your ability and willingness to withstand losses. A recent decline can reveal that the original mix was more volatile than you could realistically hold. That is a reason to reconsider the target, but make the decision based on your broader financial situation and behavior—not on a single frightening week. Investor.gov advises investors to reassess allocation when goals, time horizon or tolerance for risk change.
Separate a changed plan from temporary discomfort
If your job, emergency savings, debt, cash needs and investment horizon are unchanged, a market drop alone does not establish that your target should be rewritten. Changing the target after every bout of relative performance can turn a long-term plan into a series of improvised market calls.

Use the same level of detail as your plan. If the plan has targets for stocks, bonds and cash, begin there. If it has separate targets for domestic and international stocks or for different bond categories, calculate those as well. Do not compare a detailed current portfolio with an overly broad target and assume the result is precise.
An illustrative allocation example
Investor.gov uses a 60% stock target to show how performance can change weights: after stocks gain relative to other assets, stocks can become 80% of the portfolio. That 60%-to-80% example is an illustration of allocation drift, not a prediction, market statistic or recommendation. A market decline can create the same problem in the opposite direction, leaving stocks below their target.
Decide what “out of balance” means in your plan
There is no single drift percentage that fits every investor. Some people set a threshold for each asset class; others review on a calendar and act whenever the allocation is meaningfully different. Record the rule in writing so that a stressful market day does not make the decision for you.

3. Choose a rebalancing method
Once the target is confirmed and drift is measured, choose the least disruptive method that can move the portfolio back toward plan. The main approaches differ in their use of sales, cash flows and monitoring.

| Method | How it works | Sales, taxes and costs | Monitoring and cash-flow use |
|---|---|---|---|
| New contributions | Send new money to asset classes below target instead of buying more of an overweight. | Can avoid selling and therefore may avoid sale-related transaction costs and taxable gains. | Works best when you are regularly adding money; review the resulting weights. |
| Dividends or interest | Direct portfolio income toward underweighted holdings rather than automatically reinvesting it everywhere. | Usually reduces the need for sales, although the income itself can have tax consequences depending on the account. | Uses an existing cash flow; requires instructions or periodic redirection. |
| Sell and buy | Sell part of an overweight position and use the proceeds to buy an underweight. | May create trading fees, spreads or taxable gains in a taxable account; check before placing orders. | Can restore the mix more quickly but requires decisions about lots, order sizes and timing. |
| Partial adjustment | Move only part of the distance back to target, combining cash flows with a smaller sale. | May reduce immediate tax and transaction exposure compared with a full sale, but does not completely restore the target at once. | Requires a follow-up review under your written rule. |
| Automatic fund or plan rebalancing | Use a target-date fund or retirement-plan feature that maintains its published allocation. | Trading is handled inside the fund or plan; your personal tax treatment still depends on the account and structure. | Reduces hands-on monitoring, but you must understand the fund’s glide path and allocation. |
4. Use cash flows before selling when that fits
Directing contributions, dividends and interest to underweighted assets is often the simplest first move. It adds to the portion that fell below target without requiring you to dispose of an appreciated holding. This approach is especially useful in a taxable account when the desired adjustment is modest and you are still making regular deposits.
Cash-flow rebalancing is not magic: if the account is no longer receiving money, or the drift is large, contributions alone may take too long. Recalculate the percentages after each deposit rather than assuming a fixed dollar amount will produce the intended mix.
5. Sell overweight assets only after checking implementation costs
Selling can be appropriate when cash flows cannot correct the drift or when the allocation is far from target. Before submitting an order, identify the account type, the tax lots that would be sold, any fund or brokerage transaction charges, and the spread or other trading cost. Investor.gov specifically cautions that a chosen rebalancing method can trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. The SEC and FINRA likewise discuss tax considerations when selling securities.
In a taxable account, a sale can realize a gain or loss. The amount and treatment depend on your cost basis, holding period, account, jurisdiction and other facts; a general article cannot calculate your tax bill. Consider whether a contribution-first or partial approach can accomplish enough of the adjustment without a large realization. If the proposed sale is substantial, unusually complex or tied to a tax deadline, qualified tax or financial advice may be worthwhile.

In a tax-advantaged retirement account, the mechanics and consequences can differ, but that does not eliminate the need to check plan rules, available investment choices and any fees. Do not assume that a transaction is consequence-free merely because it occurs inside a retirement arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Pick a repeatable review rule
A rule turns rebalancing into maintenance instead of an emotional response to headlines. Three common formats are available.
Calendar review
Review on a set schedule—such as annually or at another interval you can follow consistently—and rebalance if the allocation is meaningfully off target. Calendar reviews are easy to schedule and can limit constant checking. Vanguard says its research found annual rebalancing optimal for many investors; that is Vanguard guidance, not a universal result or a requirement for every portfolio.
Threshold review
Review whenever an asset class moves a specified number of percentage points from target. Vanguard illustrates a five-percentage-point threshold with a 60% stocks/40% bonds portfolio. In that example, action would be considered when an allocation moved sufficiently away from its target under the stated rule. The example is not a universal threshold; your costs, cash flows and tolerance for monitoring may justify another rule.

Combined review
Check on a calendar and act only when a threshold is breached. This can balance a simple appointment with a guard against allowing drift to grow too large. Threshold systems may require more frequent attention during volatile markets, while calendar systems are simpler to administer.
Whichever rule you choose, document the target, the trigger, the accounts covered and the person responsible for placing trades. A written process helps prevent a market drop from becoming an unplanned change in risk.
7. Check whether a fund or plan already does this
Before making separate trades, inspect your retirement plan and any target-date fund. Such funds generally maintain an allocation and may gradually change it as the target date approaches. Your plan may also offer an automatic rebalancing feature. Read the current fund or plan description to understand its allocation, glide path, frequency and fees. Adding separate trades on top of an existing rebalancing system can unintentionally make the portfolio more aggressive or more conservative than intended.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInvestor.gov notes the target-date-fund context when discussing allocation. The fact that a fund rebalances internally does not mean its allocation is suitable for every investor; you still need to decide whether the fund’s risk level and time path match your goal.
What not to do after a drop
- Do not sell everything to stop the discomfort. That abandons the allocation decision and can lock in losses or leave you with a risk level you never chose.
- Do not buy more solely because an asset fell. Rebalancing buys an underweight only because it is below a suitable target, not because a rebound is certain.
- Do not rewrite the plan from recent performance alone. A short period of outperformance or decline is not evidence that your long-term objective has changed.
- Do not ignore concentration. A portfolio can appear balanced by broad asset class while one security or narrow sector dominates the risk. Compare holdings with the level of diversification your plan actually specifies.
- Do not overlook fees and taxes. A theoretically perfect allocation can be an expensive practical choice if frequent sales create avoidable costs.
A worked decision sequence
- Write the target. Record the percentages and the goal, time horizon and risk assumptions behind them.
- Calculate current weights. Use current market values and compare each asset class with its target in percentage points.
- Ask why the drift exists. Identify the market move, contributions, withdrawals or other change that produced it.
- Confirm the target still fits. If your circumstances changed, make a deliberate plan change; if not, keep the target for the rebalancing decision.
- Apply your rule. Determine whether the calendar date, threshold or combined rule calls for action.
- Use available cash flows. Redirect contributions, dividends or interest to underweights when that can reasonably close the gap.
- Model any sale. Check account type, tax lots, possible gains or losses, fees and the amount needed before selling.
- Place only the necessary trades. A partial adjustment is an option when a full restoration would create disproportionate costs.
- Record the result. Note the post-trade weights and the next review date so the process is repeatable.
When professional help is sensible
General education cannot determine a suitable allocation or individual tax treatment. Consider qualified advice when several accounts have different tax treatments, a sale would realize a large gain, your goal or time horizon is changing, you hold concentrated or complicated positions, or you cannot tell whether a target-date fund and your other holdings overlap. Bring the adviser or tax professional your target, current weights, account types, cost bases and the decision rule you are considering.
A concise checklist
- Target allocation written down
- Goal, time horizon and risk tolerance still current
- Current percentages calculated
- Drift measured in percentage points
- Calendar, threshold or combined rule selected
- Contributions and portfolio income directed to underweights where practical
- Fees, spreads and taxable gains checked before any sale
- Target-date fund or plan-level rebalancing reviewed
- Trades and next review date recorded
The sound response to an out-of-balance portfolio is a process: verify the plan, measure the drift, choose the least costly method that fits, and act without pretending to know what the market will do next. Rebalancing keeps risk connected to your chosen objective; it is not a promise that prices will recover.
