What to Do When Your Mutual Fund Returns Fall: A Step-by-Step Checklist

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

A falling mutual-fund return is a signal to investigate, not an automatic sell instruction. First establish exactly what declined and over what period; then compare the fund with an appropriate benchmark, read its prospectus and shareholder report, account for fees, and decide whether the holding still fits your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and overall portfolio.

This checklist is general educational information for U.S. investors reviewing a fund they already own. It is not a personalized evaluation or a recommendation to buy, hold or sell any particular investment.

Before you act: separate a fund’s return from your account balance

A mutual fund’s net asset value (NAV) reflects the value of its portfolio after expenses and liabilities. The fund’s reported total return is a performance measure for a stated period; the dollar value shown in your account can differ because of purchases, withdrawals, reinvested or paid distributions, and the dates on which transactions occurred. Start with the fund’s official performance table and your current account statement rather than relying on a single percentage displayed in an app.

Mutual funds are investments, not bank deposits. They are not guaranteed or insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any government agency, and investors can lose some or all of the money invested. Income distributions can also change as market conditions change. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov overview of mutual funds explains these risks and the limits of historical performance.

Step 1: Confirm what fell and the period it covers

Identify the exact performance figure

Record the fund name, share class, period and return shown in the fund’s materials. A one-day move, a year-to-date result, a trailing 12-month return and a 10-year average annual return answer different questions. Do not compare a year-to-date number with a calendar-year benchmark or treat a daily change as evidence of a long-term trend.

  • Write down the beginning and ending dates.
  • Note whether the figure is a total return, price/NAV change, or account gain or loss.
  • Check whether distributions were included and reinvested.
  • Record the share class, because different classes can have different expenses or sales charges.

Reconcile the account statement

Use the statement covering the same dates as the performance figure. Check beginning shares, purchases, exchanges, redemptions, distributions, ending shares and ending value. A cash distribution that was not reinvested can lower the account’s market value even though the fund’s total return calculation treats the distribution as part of the investor’s return. New contributions or withdrawals can change the account balance without changing the fund’s published return.

If the statement and the fund’s published figure still do not make sense together, preserve the statement, transaction confirmations and distribution history. Ask the fund company or your brokerage to explain how the account value was calculated before making a trade.

Step 2: Compare the fund with the right benchmark

Match the mandate and market segment

A useful benchmark should represent the market segment and strategy the fund actually follows. A broad stock index may be a required reference point in a report, but it may not be an appropriate comparator for a municipal-bond fund, a small-company fund, a balanced fund or a strategy that concentrates in a particular sector. Compare like with like: asset class, geography, company size, credit quality, duration and investment approach all matter.

Read the fund’s stated objective and benchmark description in the prospectus and shareholder report. If the fund changed its benchmark or strategy, mark the date of the change; a long historical series may combine periods that are not fully comparable.

Use matching dates and return definitions

Compare the fund and benchmark over identical periods. If the fund’s table shows average annual total returns for one, five and ten years, use the benchmark figures for those same periods. Do not pair a fund’s total return with an index’s price-only change.

Benchmark returns may not deduct the fees and expenses charged to you. A fund can therefore trail an index partly because the index result is shown before costs that the fund must pay. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on performance claims advises investors to understand how a comparison was calculated and to question presentations that omit reasonable periods or different market conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question What to check
Is the benchmark relevant? Does it represent the fund’s asset class, market segment and strategy?
Are the dates identical? Use the same start and end dates, including the same treatment of distributions.
Are return definitions comparable? Compare total return with total return, and note whether each figure is before or after expenses.
Did the mandate change? Check prospectus or report disclosures for a benchmark, objective or strategy change.

Step 3: Read several periods, not just the latest number

Use the shareholder-report performance table

SEC shareholder-report guidance describes a table showing average annual total returns for the past one, five and ten years, or for the fund’s life if it has existed for less than ten years. The same report generally includes a graph of a hypothetical $10,000 investment and portfolio information such as net assets, number of holdings and portfolio turnover. These are disclosure periods and portfolio statistics, not forecasts or an independent performance study.

Read the annual and shorter-period figures together. A fund may have a weak recent year but a longer record that reflects a different market environment; conversely, a strong long-term average can conceal a recent change in risk or management. Historical returns can help you understand variability, but they cannot reliably predict future results. Investor.gov states: “A fund’s past performance is not as important as you might think because past performance does not predict future returns.”

Look for changing volatility and concentration

Review the report’s holdings, sector or issuer concentrations and turnover for the relevant reporting date. A large position in one industry, country, issuer or maturity range can make returns diverge sharply from a broad benchmark. High turnover can indicate more trading and may create transaction-cost or taxable-account considerations. Use the report’s own period and definitions when interpreting each metric; do not treat a single turnover figure as a prediction of future trading.

Consider market conditions without turning them into a forecast

Ask whether the decline occurred during a broad market selloff or in a period when the fund’s particular segment lagged. That context helps explain a result, but it does not establish what will happen next. SEC staff guidance about performance presentations emphasizes reasonable periods that include different market conditions; the guidance is educational, not a rule or regulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Audit fees, expenses and share-class costs

Start with the standardized prospectus fee table

Open the current prospectus and locate the fee table. It shows ongoing operating expenses deducted from fund assets and may list shareholder transaction charges. Depending on the fund and share class, charges can apply to purchases, exchanges or redemptions, and a sales load may apply when shares are bought or sold. Because these costs reduce returns, identify each one before judging whether performance is disappointing.

The SEC’s July 23, 2025 Investor Bulletin on mutual-fund and ETF fees and expenses points investors to FINRA’s Fund Analyzer as a resource for comparing fund costs. Treat any calculator result as an estimate based on the assumptions you enter, and verify the fund’s current prospectus and your own transaction charges.

Distinguish recurring and one-time costs

  • Operating expenses: recurring costs paid from fund assets, including management and other administrative expenses listed in the fee table.
  • Sales loads: charges that may apply when shares are purchased or redeemed, depending on the class and arrangement.
  • Transaction charges: fees that may apply to purchases, exchanges or redemptions in addition to operating expenses.
  • Account-level costs: charges imposed by an intermediary or account provider rather than by the fund itself.

Check whether a fee waiver or expense reimbursement is temporary and when it expires. Compare the net expense ratio shown for the current period with the gross expense ratio when both are provided; a lower net figure may depend on a contractual waiver that can end.

Step 5: Check the fund’s strategy, holdings and risks

Read the objective and principal strategies

The prospectus states what the fund seeks to do and how it intends to do it. Confirm whether the fund still owns the types of securities you expected: stocks or bonds, domestic or international holdings, a particular company-size range, a maturity or credit-quality range, or a blend of assets. A fund can underperform because its chosen segment is out of favor, because holdings differ from the benchmark, or because implementation costs reduce results.

Read the principal-risk section

Risk disclosures identify exposures such as market, interest-rate, credit, foreign-currency, liquidity, concentration and derivatives risk when applicable. Compare those risks with your ability to tolerate losses and with the role the fund plays in your portfolio. A decline may reveal that the fund’s volatility or concentration is greater than you understood, even if the stated objective has not changed.

If it is an index fund, investigate tracking difference

An index fund seeks to track an index; it does not promise an exact match. Fees, trading costs, cash holdings, portfolio sampling, corporate actions and timing can create tracking error or a persistent difference from the index. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation of index funds notes that these funds retain the risks of the underlying securities. Compare the fund’s reported return with the index after considering the index’s cost treatment and the fund’s expense ratio.

Check for material changes

Look through recent shareholder reports, prospectus supplements and shareholder letters for a change in adviser, portfolio manager, objective, benchmark, fees, distribution policy or principal risks. A return that falls after a mandate change should be evaluated against the new mandate rather than the old one.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 6: Reassess whether the fund still fits your situation

Review the job the fund is meant to do

Write a one-sentence purpose for the holding: long-term growth, income, diversification, a portion of a retirement allocation or another defined role. Then check whether the fund’s objective and current holdings support that purpose. Performance alone cannot determine suitability; the SEC’s performance-claim guidance cautions that presentations may not account for an investor’s personal circumstances.

Check time horizon and loss capacity

Match the investment’s risks with when you may need the money and how much loss you could financially and emotionally withstand. A long horizon does not eliminate risk, and a short horizon does not make a volatile fund safer. Consider whether a withdrawal deadline, emergency need, job change or other life event has altered the decision you originally made.

View the fund in the broader portfolio

List your other accounts and look for overlapping holdings, concentration in one sector or country, and the combined mix of stocks, bonds and cash. A fund that looks diversified by itself may duplicate exposures elsewhere. Also consider the account’s tax situation and whether a sale, exchange or distribution could have tax consequences; obtain tax advice when the consequences are material.

Step 7: Decide what information you need before changing anything

A short-term decline by itself does not establish that a fund is unsuitable, nor does a recent gain establish that it should be kept. Use the evidence you collected to classify the issue:

  • Broad-market movement: the fund and an appropriate benchmark declined over the same period, with no unexplained change in mandate.
  • Persistent relative underperformance: the fund trails a suitable benchmark over several matching periods after considering fees and strategy differences.
  • Cost problem: expenses, loads or transaction charges are materially higher than comparable choices for the role the fund serves.
  • Strategy or risk mismatch: holdings, concentration or volatility no longer match your objective or loss capacity.
  • Recordkeeping discrepancy: your statement, transactions or distributions do not reconcile with the reported return.

Each category calls for a different next question. A broad-market decline may call for monitoring and a portfolio review; a recordkeeping discrepancy calls for clarification; a strategy mismatch may justify researching alternatives. None of these classifications is a personalized buy, hold or sell instruction.

How to compare your current fund with another fund

If you are considering an alternative, compare both funds on the same evidence rather than choosing the one with the most attractive recent number.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Mandate and exposure Do the objective, asset class, market segment, strategy and actual holdings serve the same purpose?
Benchmark and period Is each benchmark appropriate, and do the funds report returns for identical short and long periods?
Costs What are the expense ratios, transaction charges, sales loads and intermediary fees? Which costs are included in each performance figure?
Risk and volatility What do the prospectuses say about principal risks, concentration and historical variability? For an index fund, how large is the tracking difference?
Personal fit Does the fund match your time horizon, goals, ability to tolerate loss, tax situation and broader portfolio?

Use the current prospectus and latest shareholder report for each fund. If one document uses a different reporting date or share class, note that limitation rather than presenting the numbers as directly comparable.

Records to gather for a calm review

  • Current account statement and the statement for the period in which the decline occurred.
  • Fund name, ticker or account identifier and exact share class.
  • Prospectus, including the fee table and principal-risk disclosures.
  • Latest shareholder report and any more recent report available.
  • Transaction confirmations for purchases, exchanges and redemptions.
  • Distribution notices showing whether income or capital-gain distributions were paid in cash or reinvested.
  • Benchmark name and return definition used in the fund’s report.
  • Notes about any change in adviser, objective, benchmark, fees or portfolio manager.

When to ask for help

Contact the fund company or your account provider when you cannot reconcile the NAV, distributions, share count, fees or account value. Ask for an explanation in writing and keep the documents you used. A qualified financial professional can help you evaluate the fund’s role alongside your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, taxes and other holdings. Give that person the prospectus, shareholder report, statements and your comparison notes; a return percentage alone is not enough to evaluate suitability.

For official explanations of fund performance, fees, reports and index tracking, use the SEC’s investor resources: Mutual Funds, Performance Claims, Mutual Fund and ETF Fees and Expenses, How to Read a Mutual Fund or ETF Shareholder Report and How to Read a Mutual Fund Prospectus.

The practical decision rule

Do not let a single falling number make the decision for you. Verify the measurement, compare a suitable benchmark over matching periods, inspect costs and strategy, and then test the fund against your current goals and ability to tolerate loss. If the documents reveal a mismatch, unexplained costs or an account error, address that specific issue; if they do not, keep the review focused on your plan rather than on predicting the next market move.
