What to Do When Your Investment Portfolio Is Too Concentrated in One Asset

If one stock, fund, employer security, property investment, or other exposure dominates your portfolio, first measure the concentration across all accounts, then choose a target mix that fits your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for loss. You can reduce the overweight by selling part of it, directing new money elsewhere, or combining both approaches. The right path depends on taxes, fees, liquidity, account rules, and whether you actually need the money soon; there is no universal percentage that automatically defines “too concentrated.”

This is general U.S. educational information, not individualized investment, legal, or tax advice.

What concentration risk means

Concentration risk arises when a large share of your portfolio depends on one investment, asset class, industry, geographic market, or other common driver. A fall in that exposure can therefore cause an outsized decline in your total wealth. Concentration can be obvious, such as holding one company’s shares, or hidden inside several funds that own many of the same securities.

Liquidity is a separate but related risk. FINRA notes that an asset may be difficult to sell promptly or at a reasonable price, especially in stressed markets. Private investments, restricted securities, thinly traded shares, and some real-estate interests can leave you unable to rebalance when you want to. See FINRA’s explanation of concentration and liquidity risk at “Concentrate on Concentration Risk.”

Diversification can reduce dependence on a single outcome, but it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses. A broadly diversified portfolio can still fall when markets decline.

Step 1: Inventory every exposure before changing anything

Start with a complete list of investments and cash, not just the account you check most often. Include taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace plans, health or other investment accounts, and material holdings outside those accounts. Record the current value, number of shares, account type, ownership, and whether you can sell or transfer the position.

Where to look What to record Concentration question
Taxable brokerage accounts Each security, market value, cost basis, purchase dates, unrealized gain or loss, and trading restrictions Would selling create a taxable gain, and how much of the total portfolio does the position represent?
Employer retirement plans Plan funds, employer stock, contribution elections, vesting, and any automatic-rebalance feature Do your paycheck, benefits, and investments all depend on the same employer or industry?
IRAs and other retirement accounts Holdings, available investment options, fees, and distribution rules Can new contributions be directed to underweighted categories without selling?
Mutual funds and ETFs Top holdings, sector and geographic weights, and fund expenses Do several funds own the same companies or rely on the same narrow sector?
Other investments Private or restricted interests, real estate, options, digital assets, and concentrated cash positions How quickly could you obtain cash, and what valuation or transfer limits apply?

Use current statements and, where available, the fund company’s holdings file or prospectus. A fund’s name does not prove diversification: a narrowly focused sector fund can be highly correlated with a single-stock position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Measure overlap, not just the number of holdings

Calculate each position’s percentage of the investable portfolio and then look through funds to identify duplicate exposures. For example, owning a total-market fund, a technology-sector fund, and a technology company’s shares may create a much larger technology and single-company exposure than the account screens suggest.

Analyze concentration at several levels:

  • Single security: the percentage tied to one company, issuer, fund, or property.
  • Asset class: the share in stocks, bonds, cash, real estate, commodities, or other categories.
  • Sector and geography: dependence on an industry, country, currency, or economic driver.
  • Economic exposure outside the portfolio: salary, commissions, business ownership, or employer benefits linked to the same company or sector.
  • Liquidity: the time, price uncertainty, and transaction cost required to turn each holding into cash.

Official investor guidance does not establish a single concentration threshold that applies to everyone. Treat the result as a risk diagnosis, then decide how much exposure is appropriate for your circumstances rather than applying a rule of thumb.

Step 3: Set a target mix tied to your circumstances

Asset allocation is the intended mix among categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. The SEC explains that the appropriate mix depends primarily on your investment time horizon and risk tolerance. A goal due in a few years generally cannot absorb the same volatility as a retirement goal decades away, and two people with the same horizon may reasonably choose different risk levels.

Write down the purpose and date of each major goal, the amount you may need before then, and the largest temporary loss you could withstand without abandoning the plan. Include an emergency reserve and near-term spending needs before deciding how much can remain exposed to market risk. Your target should describe ranges or percentages for broad categories and, if relevant, a maximum you are comfortable holding in a single issuer or narrow segment. It is a personal planning choice, not an official limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revisit the target when your goals, income, family circumstances, tax status, or risk capacity changes. The SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guide explains that rebalancing restores a portfolio to its intended mix after market movements cause drift.

Step 4: Choose how to reduce the overweight

There are three basic ways to move from your current mix toward the target. Compare them using the same exposure analysis so that a change in one account does not simply recreate the concentration elsewhere.

Approach How it works Main benefits Key costs and risks
Sell part of the overweight Dispose of enough of the concentrated holding and invest the proceeds in underweighted categories. Reduces risk immediately and can move the portfolio close to its target in one transaction. May create commissions, spreads, fund fees, and taxable gains; a volatile or illiquid asset may be costly to sell.
Redirect new contributions Send payroll deferrals, automatic deposits, dividends, or other new money only to underweighted categories. Can reduce concentration without selling the existing position, which may defer realization of gains. Works slowly if contributions are small; the portfolio remains exposed to the overweight while you wait.
Combine both Sell a measured portion now, then direct future contributions and periodic rebalancing to the remaining gaps. Balances faster risk reduction with control over taxes and transaction size. Requires a written plan and follow-through; future purchases can drift if allocations are not monitored.

Employer plans may offer automatic rebalancing or assistance, according to FINRA. Check the plan’s current menu, rules, and costs rather than assuming the feature is available.

Before acting, the SEC advises: “Before you decide to rebalance, make sure to consider whether the method of rebalancing you decide to use will involve transaction fees or tax consequences.” Read the full guidance in the SEC’s Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

Taxes, fees, and account rules to check before a sale

The same trade can have very different consequences depending on where the holding sits. In a taxable account, gather the cost basis and acquisition dates for each tax lot. A sale may realize a capital gain or loss, and the holding period can affect the applicable tax treatment. Confirm how your broker handles specific-lot identification, wash-sale issues when replacing a position, and transaction charges. The sources cited here do not calculate an individual tax bill.

Retirement accounts generally have different tax mechanics, but plan restrictions, distribution rules, investment menus, and administrative fees still matter. A workplace plan may limit transfers or impose rules around employer stock. Restricted shares, options, private-company interests, and very low-basis positions can require specialized advice; do not assume that a standard online trade is available or appropriate.

  • Obtain an up-to-date statement and tax-lot report.
  • Ask the custodian for commissions, bid-ask spreads, redemption fees, transfer fees, and any minimums.
  • Confirm settlement timing and whether selling would leave enough cash for taxes or near-term spending.
  • For a large, unusual, or illiquid position, consult a qualified tax professional and investment adviser before placing an order.

Use diversification tools carefully

Broad mutual funds and ETFs

Broad funds can spread exposure across many issuers and sectors, but inspect the actual portfolio. Compare the fund’s objective, top holdings, sector and country weights, turnover, expenses, tracking approach, and trading liquidity. Two funds that appear different can hold the same largest companies, so combine their look-through holdings before deciding that you are diversified.

Life-cycle or target-date funds

Life-cycle funds automatically change their mix over time according to a stated retirement date or glide path. They can simplify allocation and rebalancing, but the glide path, equity level at the target date, underlying holdings, and total costs differ by fund. “Target date” does not guarantee a particular risk level or protect principal.

Automatic plan features

Some employer plans allow automatic rebalancing or provide allocation assistance. Read the plan’s description for frequency, available investments, fees, and whether employer stock is excluded. An automatic feature follows its programmed rules; it cannot account for every investment or income exposure you hold outside the plan.

Charitable giving of appreciated securities

If you already intend to support a qualified charity, donating appreciated securities may be an alternative to selling them and donating cash. FINRA discusses this strategy in Investing with Charitable Giving in Mind (September 18, 2024). The tax result depends on the asset, recipient, holding period, valuation, and your circumstances.

A contribution is generally irrevocable once transferred. Verify that the organization is an eligible recipient, obtain its transfer instructions, document the contribution and fair-market value, and review deduction limits before acting. IRS Publication 526 (2025) explains charitable-contribution rules and limitations; check the current publication or a tax professional because rules can change: IRS Publication 526.

Do not use a charitable gift merely as a substitute for a diversification plan. It makes sense only when the charitable purpose is genuine and the irrevocable transfer fits your cash-flow and tax needs.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Freeze the assumptions. Set a date for your inventory and download statements from every account.
  2. Map exposures. Add each holding’s market value, then look through funds for duplicated issuers, sectors, and regions.
  3. Separate money by purpose. Identify emergency cash and near-term spending that should not depend on selling a volatile or illiquid asset.
  4. Write the target. Base the mix and any single-issuer limit on goals, time horizon, and loss tolerance.
  5. Model alternatives. Compare a partial sale, contribution-only changes, and a combination. Estimate the resulting exposure after each option.
  6. Check implementation details. Review tax lots, holding periods, account restrictions, liquidity, spreads, commissions, fund expenses, and settlement dates.
  7. Get appropriate advice. Use a qualified tax professional for tax questions and an appropriately qualified investment professional for complex or restricted holdings.
  8. Execute in manageable steps. Place orders or change contribution elections according to the written plan; retain confirmations and updated records.
  9. Review on a schedule. Recheck after major market moves, contributions, withdrawals, job changes, inheritances, or changes in goals. FINRA recommends regular reviews and rebalancing to keep investments aligned with objectives.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting fund labels instead of exposures: several “different” funds may own the same securities.
  • Waiting for a perfect exit price: delaying indefinitely leaves the original concentration in place and may increase dependence on one forecast.
  • Ignoring non-investment exposure: employer stock plus a job, bonus, or business tied to that employer can magnify the same risk.
  • Overlooking liquidity: a paper value is not the same as cash you can access quickly at a predictable price.
  • Trading without a target: selling one asset does not create diversification unless the proceeds are allocated intentionally.
  • Assuming diversification eliminates losses: diversified portfolios still lose value in broad market declines.

When professional help is especially important

Consider personalized advice before acting if the position is a large share of your net worth, has a very low basis, is inherited, restricted, private, option-based, pledged as collateral, or intertwined with your employer or business. A professional can coordinate tax lots, account locations, charitable plans, cash needs, and an allocation without assuming facts that general guidance cannot establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of one investment is too much?

There is no official percentage that applies to every investor. Judge the position against your goals, time horizon, ability to withstand loss, liquidity needs, and other exposures, including your job or business.

Can I diversify without selling my concentrated holding?

Yes. Direct new contributions, dividends, and other additions to underweighted categories, or combine that approach with a measured sale. Contribution-only changes reduce concentration gradually and leave the existing risk in place while you wait.

Should I donate appreciated shares to solve concentration?

Only if you have genuine charitable intent and accept an irrevocable transfer. Confirm the recipient, documentation, deduction limits, valuation, and current tax rules before transferring securities.

Does a target-date fund automatically fix every concentration problem?

No. It manages the assets inside that fund according to its glide path. Review its holdings and costs, and consider investments and employer exposure held elsewhere.
