First confirm what actually changed, then read the fund’s current objective, strategy, risks, fees and holdings. Next test whether the fund still fits your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance and overall portfolio. Only after that should you consider holding, selling, switching or continuing regular contributions. A qualified financial professional can help when the tax, portfolio or personal-finance consequences are difficult to assess.
Start with a calm, fact-based check
Equity mutual funds own stocks, so their net asset value (NAV) can move sharply in either direction. Investor.gov explains that a stock fund can rise or fall quickly and substantially over short periods, and that investors can lose some or all of the money invested. The NAV is the value of the portfolio after expenses and liabilities; a lower NAV therefore represents a real decrease in the account’s current value, but it does not predict the fund’s next return. See Investor.gov’s mutual-fund guide.

Before making a trade, write down the fund name and share class, the current number of shares, the latest NAV, your account value, recent contributions and any distributions. A statement balance can fall because the NAV fell, because a distribution was paid, or because you withdrew money. Your personal total return also depends on when you bought shares and whether distributions were reinvested. This distinction prevents an apparent “loss” from being misread as a new change in the fund itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Use the fund company’s statement or your investment platform for the current NAV and share balance.
- Compare the latest value with the previous statement and identify the date of the change.
- Record any dividend or capital-gain distribution, contribution, withdrawal or transfer during that period.
- Do not infer a permanent impairment from one day, week or month of performance.
Read the documents that describe what you own
Open the latest prospectus and shareholder report, rather than relying on the fund’s name or a performance chart. The prospectus explains the objective, principal strategies, principal risks, expenses and procedures. The shareholder report shows the portfolio and discusses operations for the reporting period. Investor.gov’s guidance on reading a mutual-fund prospectus emphasizes matching the stated objective and risks to your own objective and risk tolerance.

| Document or section | Questions to answer | What a mismatch may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Investment objective | Is the fund seeking growth, income, a sector exposure or another stated result? | The fund may no longer serve the purpose for which you bought it. |
| Strategy and holdings | Which companies, industries, countries and security types dominate the portfolio? | A fund that sounds broad may in fact be concentrated in one industry, region or style. |
| Principal risks | Does the document identify equity, concentration, foreign-market, small-company, interest-rate or other relevant risks? | You may be exposed to losses you did not intend to accept. |
| Fees and expenses | What operating expenses, sales charges, account fees or redemption charges apply to your share class? | Costs can reduce returns and may affect the economics of switching. |
| Portfolio and report discussion | Did the holdings, manager, strategy or risk profile change materially? | A fund can behave differently from the one you originally selected. |
Past performance can describe how volatile a fund has been, but it cannot predict future results. Treat a recent ranking or return as context, not as a reason by itself to trade.
Match the fund to the goal and the time horizon
Asset allocation should reflect both the date you need the money and your ability and willingness to tolerate losses. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation and diversification guidance distinguishes a long-term goal from a near-term spending need. Money needed soon generally cannot depend on an equity fund recovering on an unknown schedule; a distant goal may allow more time for market fluctuations, but only if you can continue to withstand them.
Ask three personal questions
- When will I need the money? Identify the date or range, not just “retirement” or “emergency.” Include tuition, a home purchase, a tax bill or any planned withdrawal.
- Can I financially withstand another decline? Consider income stability, emergency savings, debt payments and other assets. Capacity for loss is different from simply feeling comfortable with risk.
- Has my willingness to take risk changed? A fall can reveal that the original allocation was more aggressive than you can realistically maintain. That is a planning signal, not proof that the fund is defective.
If a near-term obligation is now at risk, address the cash need and the allocation rather than waiting for a forecasted rebound. If the goal is distant and the fund still fits the documented plan, a fall alone does not establish that a sale is appropriate.

Check the whole portfolio for concentration and overlap
A mutual fund is not automatically diversified. A sector-focused fund can hold many companies in one industry, and several apparently different funds can own the same large companies. Investor.gov notes that concentration and overlap can leave a portfolio more exposed than its fund count suggests. Compare the fund’s largest holdings and industry weights with your other funds, retirement accounts and individual securities.
- List each account and its percentage in equities, bonds, cash and other assets.
- Identify repeated companies, industries, countries or investment styles across funds.
- Check whether one declining sector or company now represents more of your wealth than intended.
- Compare the current allocation with the target allocation you deliberately chose for the goal.
For Indian investors, the Association of Mutual Funds in India explains that equity prices fluctuate daily and principal is at risk in its risk guidance. Its scheme-categorization information also describes how sector-focused schemes have limited diversification and greater concentration risk. Fund categories, disclosures and protections vary by country, so use the documents issued for your jurisdiction.
Decide whether this is a rebalancing issue
Rebalancing means returning the portfolio to a chosen allocation; it is not a prediction that a falling asset will rise next. Investor.gov describes two common rules: review at intervals such as every six or 12 months, or act when an allocation moves beyond a preset percentage threshold. It also says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. Choose a rule that fits your plan and apply it consistently instead of reacting to every market move.

- Write the target percentage for each major asset class and, if relevant, each fund.
- Measure the current percentage using current market values.
- Check whether the decline caused a material drift beyond your chosen threshold.
- Use new contributions, withdrawals or carefully selected trades to move toward the target.
- Document the date, rule and reason so the next review is not driven by headlines.
Rebalancing can require selling an asset that has risen or buying one that has fallen. That is different from adding money simply because a price is down. Your rule should be based on the allocation and goal, not on confidence that you can call the market bottom.
Compare the possible actions before placing an order
| Action | May fit when | Check first | Main risk of acting on impulse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold | The objective, risks and holdings still fit the goal and your time horizon. | Whether you can tolerate further losses and whether the rest of the portfolio remains balanced. | Keeping a fund whose strategy or concentration no longer suits you. |
| Sell or switch | The fund no longer fits your objective, risk capacity, time horizon or intended allocation. | Fees, redemption terms, taxes, replacement-fund risks and the effect on diversification. | Locking in a loss and moving into another unsuitable investment because of recent performance. |
| Continue planned contributions | Regular investing is part of a suitable long-term plan and cash needs are covered. | Your emergency reserves, debt obligations, risk capacity and the fund’s current suitability. | Continuing or increasing contributions when you cannot afford additional losses. |
| Rebalance | The decline moved the portfolio away from a deliberately chosen target. | Your written threshold or review date, transaction costs and tax effects. | Turning a portfolio rule into frequent market timing. |
Investor.gov’s downturn guidance, “Don’t Panic, Plan It!”, cautions against rash decisions and frames regular contributions as a plan-based choice. It describes dollar-cost averaging as buying more shares with a regular contribution when prices are lower, but this does not guarantee gains and is not suitable for every investor. Do not double your contribution merely to reduce an average purchase price.
Understand selling, switching and tax consequences
Before submitting a redemption or exchange request, read the fund’s current fee schedule and transaction provisions. Depending on the fund and jurisdiction, you may face a sales charge, account fee, redemption fee, tax on realized gains or other consequences. A loss can also have tax implications, and the rules differ by country, account type and holding period. The available general guidance supports checking fees and taxes; it does not replace jurisdiction-specific tax advice.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When continuing contributions makes sense—and when it does not
A market decline does not automatically require stopping a regular investment program. Continuing the contribution can be consistent with a long-term allocation when the fund remains suitable, the goal is distant, and you have adequate cash reserves. Lower prices may buy more shares for the same scheduled amount, but no method removes market risk or guarantees recovery.

Pause and reassess if contributions would reduce emergency savings, cause missed debt payments, force you to sell another asset, or push the portfolio beyond your risk capacity. A contribution plan should be affordable in a bad market, not only comfortable when prices are rising. Increasing the amount because the fund is down is a separate decision that requires a fresh review of cash flow, allocation and risk.

Look for changes that are material to your decision
Read the latest report for information that changes the fund’s role: a revised objective, a substantially different portfolio, a new manager, altered expenses, a merger or a shift in concentration. Such a change may justify a review even if the recent return is positive. Conversely, a decline that is consistent with the documented strategy does not by itself show that management failed.
Do not judge a fund solely against a broad market index if the fund has a different objective, geography or level of concentration. Use the prospectus description and the appropriate benchmark information in the report to understand what the fund is designed to do. The key question is whether the fund is performing the role you assigned it at a risk and cost you can accept.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to call the bottom: No source in the fund documents can tell you when prices will recover. Waiting for certainty can leave the portfolio unaligned with the goal.
- Using the fund name as a diversification test: Inspect actual holdings and sector weights.
- Confusing a one-period return with total personal performance: Include contributions, withdrawals and distributions.
- Ignoring fees and taxes: A switch that looks attractive before costs may not improve the outcome.
- Making several reactive trades: Frequent changes can undermine a target allocation and make it harder to follow a plan.
- Assuming a lower price means a bargain: A cheaper NAV does not prove that the underlying assets are undervalued or that losses are limited.
- Stopping every contribution automatically: First test affordability and suitability; do not let a headline replace that analysis.

When to get individualized help
Consider a qualified financial professional when you cannot interpret the prospectus, when several accounts overlap, when a sale could create a significant tax bill, or when the decline threatens a near-term obligation. Bring the prospectus, shareholder report, statements, contribution history, tax-basis information and your goal timeline. Ask the professional to explain alternatives, costs, conflicts of interest and the assumptions behind any recommendation.
Professional guidance should help you evaluate trade-offs; it cannot promise a recovery, eliminate losses or identify the perfect time to buy or sell. If you do not understand a proposed switch or its tax and fee consequences, pause the transaction until those points are clear.
The decision in one sentence
Investigate the fund and your complete financial situation first; then choose the action—hold, sell, switch, rebalance or continue a suitable contribution plan—that keeps the investment aligned with your goal, time horizon, risk capacity, diversification needs and after-cost consequences.
