Do not sell solely because a bond fund’s value fell after an interest-rate increase. Rising market rates generally push down the market prices of existing fixed-rate bonds, and a fund must mark those holdings to market, reducing its net asset value (NAV). The decline does not by itself mean the fund defaulted or that selling is the right decision.
Start by checking what the fund owns, its duration, credit and liquidity risks, fees, purpose, and when you need the money. Then decide whether the fund still fits your goal and your ability to tolerate further NAV changes. This is different from owning one bond that matures on a known date.

Why a rate hike can reduce your bond fund’s NAV
Bond prices and market interest rates generally move in opposite directions. Suppose a bond already in a portfolio pays a fixed coupon that was competitive when it was issued. If newly issued bonds begin paying higher rates, investors generally will not pay as much for the older, lower-coupon bond. Its market price falls until its expected return is competitive with newly available bonds.

When those prices fall, the fund’s NAV—the per-share value of the portfolio after liabilities—can fall even though no issuer has missed a payment. The fund may also receive interest income during the period; income and market price are separate parts of the total return.

The effect is not limited to corporate or speculative debt. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warns in its Investor.gov explanation of bond and income funds: “Because of this type of risk, you can lose money in a bond fund, including those that invest only in insured bonds or U.S. government bonds.” Government backing can reduce credit-default risk, but it does not prevent market prices from changing before a security matures.
A rate hike may not explain the entire loss
Interest-rate sensitivity is only one source of risk. A fund’s result can also reflect changes in issuer credit quality, widening or narrowing credit spreads, mortgage prepayments, callable bonds being redeemed, foreign-currency movements, liquidity conditions, and the fund’s cash flows. A fund concentrated in one sector or issuer group can behave differently from a broad bond-market fund during the same rate move.
Use duration as a guide, not a promise
Duration is an estimate of how sensitive a bond or bond portfolio is to changes in interest rates. All else equal, a fund with a higher duration should experience a larger price change for a given rate move than a similar fund with a lower duration. Longer-maturity holdings generally have more rate sensitivity than shorter-maturity holdings.

Duration is not a guarantee or a complete risk measure. Credit quality, embedded call options, mortgage prepayments, changing cash flows, yield-curve movements, and other portfolio features can make the actual result materially different from a simple duration calculation.
FINRA’s article “Duration—What an Interest Rate Hike Could Do to Your Bond Portfolio,” published March 3, 2017, gives a simplified historical illustration: a portfolio with a 10-year duration might decline about 10% if rates rose by one percentage point. That example is not a forecast, a current-market statistic, or a quotation for your fund. It is useful only for understanding why a higher-duration portfolio can move more.
What to check before you act
Gather the fund’s current fact sheet, prospectus, and most recent shareholder report. These documents provide more reliable information than a headline, an old performance chart, or a single day’s NAV.

- Identify the fund’s role. Determine whether it is a government, municipal, corporate, high-yield, mortgage-backed, short-term, intermediate-term, or long-term fund. Read the stated investment objective and ask why you originally bought it: income, diversification, preservation of capital, or a specific liability.
- Find duration and maturity information. Record the reported effective duration, average maturity, and maturity distribution from the current fact sheet or shareholder materials. Compare those figures with the date you expect to use the money and with the size of decline you can tolerate.
- Review credit exposure. Check the quality ratings and the largest issuers, sectors, and countries. Look for concentrations and for exposure to lower-rated debt. Rate risk and default risk are different, and a fund can carry both.
- Check special portfolio features. Mortgage-backed securities can change their expected lives when homeowners refinance or prepay. Callable bonds can be redeemed by issuers. The report should disclose these and any material liquidity risks.
- Read the prospectus and shareholder report. Confirm the permitted strategies, principal risks, trading approach, distribution policy, and ongoing expenses. Fees reduce the return you keep and can matter more when yields are low.
- Match the fund to your cash timetable. List when you may need withdrawals, whether the account is taxable or tax-advantaged, and whether selling would create a taxable capital gain or loss. Tax outcomes depend on your account, cost basis, holding period, and jurisdiction.
This sequence separates a temporary market move from a change in the investment’s suitability. It also prevents a decision based only on recent performance.

When the original plan still works
If the fund’s objective, risk level, duration, and credit exposure still match your plan, and you do not need the money soon, a decline by itself does not compel a sale. You may choose to keep the position, rebalance according to a written asset-allocation plan, or make future contributions in a way that restores your target mix. None of these choices guarantees that the NAV will recover or predicts where rates will go next.
When the fund no longer matches your needs
A change may be reasonable to investigate if your cash deadline moved closer, the fund’s risk is greater than you realized, its strategy changed, or you bought it for a purpose it no longer serves. Compare a replacement on duration, credit quality, liquidity, yield after expenses, tax treatment, and access to cash. A lower recent loss is not enough evidence that an alternative is safer.

When a large withdrawal is approaching
Money needed on a defined near-term date has less time to recover from a NAV decline. Review whether the planned withdrawal amount should be held in an option with lower price volatility, while recognizing that every option has trade-offs. Consider the timing of distributions, settlement, taxes, and any penalties before making a switch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bond fund versus an individual bond
An individual bond has a stated maturity date. If you hold it to maturity and the issuer pays as promised, you receive the face value plus interest according to its terms. If you sell beforehand, its market price can be above or below face value, especially after rates change.
A bond fund continually owns and replaces a portfolio of securities. It has no single maturity date at which it promises to return your purchase price. Even a fund whose holdings eventually mature may reinvest proceeds, experience changing NAVs, and distribute income or capital gains. Therefore, “just wait until maturity” is not a complete answer for a fund investor.

How common alternatives differ
If you are considering a change, compare the characteristics rather than treating one product as a risk-free substitute for another.
| Option | Rate sensitivity and value behavior | Other risks and characteristics | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-duration bond fund | Generally less sensitive to rate changes than a similar longer-duration fund; NAV still fluctuates. | Credit, liquidity, spread, prepayment, and fee risks remain. | What is the effective duration, and what issuers and sectors dominate? |
| Ultra-short bond fund | Often shorter duration, but not a stable-value product; NAV can fall. | The SEC cautions that ultra-short funds can have higher risks than money market funds and certificates of deposit (CDs). | How does its duration and credit quality compare with the cash need? |
| Money market fund | Some structures aim for a stable NAV; floating-NAV versions can decline. | Not guaranteed. Inflation can erode returns, and fees can exceed income in some environments. | What type of NAV applies, what securities are eligible, and what expenses are charged? |
| CD | Typically has a stated term and fixed rate; market value and access depend on the issuing bank and withdrawal terms. | Early-withdrawal penalties, reinvestment risk, inflation risk, and applicable deposit-insurance limits. | What is the maturity, penalty, insurance coverage, and tax treatment? |
| Individual bond | Price changes before maturity; a stated maturity can make cash-flow planning clearer. | Issuer default risk, call risk, liquidity risk, and the possibility of loss if sold early. | Can you hold to maturity, and is the issuer’s credit quality acceptable? |
| Longer-duration bond fund | Generally more sensitive to rate changes than a comparable short-duration fund. | Also exposed to credit, liquidity, prepayment, and strategy risks. | Does the expected income justify the larger potential NAV swings? |
Money market funds and CDs are not interchangeable with ultra-short bond funds. A money market fund is not a bank deposit, and its objectives and protections differ from those of a CD. A CD is not a diversified bond portfolio and may penalize early withdrawal. Read the specific product documents before moving money.
Common mistakes after a rate-driven decline
- Assuming a government fund cannot lose value. Government or insured holdings can still fall in market price when rates rise.
- Using duration as an exact forecast. Duration is an estimate based on assumptions; credit spreads, calls, prepayments, and yield-curve changes can alter the result.
- Chasing a quick recovery. No general source can promise when, or whether, a particular fund’s NAV will return to a previous level.
- Switching solely to the highest current yield. A higher yield may compensate for longer duration, weaker credit, lower liquidity, or higher expenses.
- Ignoring taxes and transaction timing. Selling in a taxable account can create gains or losses, and fund trades settle on a schedule that may not match an immediate cash need.
- Comparing unlike products. A bond fund, money market fund, CD, and individual bond have different guarantees, maturity behavior, liquidity, and risks.
A practical decision worksheet
Write down the answers before placing a trade:
- What job is this holding supposed to perform?
- When will I need the principal, and how much must be available?
- What are the fund’s current duration, average maturity, credit mix, largest concentrations, and annual expenses?
- What portion of the recent loss appears related to rates, and what other risks are disclosed?
- How much additional NAV decline could I tolerate without abandoning the plan?
- What taxes, penalties, settlement delays, or liquidity limits would a sale or switch create?
- Does the proposed alternative improve the specific mismatch, or merely show a better recent chart?
If the answers reveal a mismatch, evaluate changes deliberately and, when the decision is individualized or substantial, consider obtaining advice from a qualified financial professional. General fund education cannot determine a personal buy, hold, or sell instruction.

When to review again
Recheck the current fact sheet, prospectus, and shareholder report when the fund changes its objective or strategy, your time horizon changes, your withdrawal plan changes, or your tolerance for losses changes. Also review periodic reports for shifts in duration, credit quality, concentration, fees, and liquidity. A documented review is more useful than reacting to each daily NAV movement.
