First compare your order confirmation, invoice and payment instructions with the new amount. Then read the seller’s terms to identify the event that fixes the price, the payment deadline and any error or cancellation exceptions. If a dealer says an accepted order now costs more or less, ask for a written explanation tied to your order and the specific term it is applying.
Start by identifying which price actually changed
Silver transactions can show several different figures: the live spot reference, the dealer’s premium, a payment-method price, tax, shipping and the final order total. A refreshed product page may show today’s live price while your order remains governed by an earlier confirmation. Conversely, an amount in a payment request or revised invoice may represent a change to the order itself.

Make a side-by-side record
- Save the product-page or cart price that concerns you, including the date and time if visible.
- Locate the order receipt, order confirmation, invoice and checkout screen.
- Record the original total, quantity, shipping, tax and selected payment method.
- Note whether the new figure changes spot, premium, payment discount, tax, shipping or the total.
- Keep your payment authorization, bank or card record and any message from the dealer.
Do not use a live page alone to establish what you agreed to. The decisive record may be an order confirmation, a later acceptance notice or another document defined in the seller’s terms.
Understand when a bullion price is fixed
A cart is often not a commitment
SD Bullion states that adding an item to a cart does not lock its price; the amount can update before the customer confirms and places the order. It also says that changing the payment type can change the quoted amount. This illustrates a common distinction: browsing, carting and even reaching checkout may leave the price live until a stated confirmation event.

Submission and acceptance are not always the same
Read the seller’s definitions carefully. The Perth Mint distinguishes an Order Receipt, which acknowledges that an order was received, from an Order Confirmation issued after review and acceptance. Its purchase terms say online and telephone prices are fixed when the Order Confirmation is issued. The Royal Mint uses its own contract-formation language for bullion orders. An email saying “we received your order” may therefore have a different effect from an email saying the order was accepted and confirmed.

These are seller-specific rules, not an industry-wide trigger. A dealer may define the lock at submission, confirmation, payment clearance or another event. The terms incorporated into your order control the practical answer.

Payment method can alter the quoted amount
Some dealers offer a lower cash-type price and a different price for cards, electronic transfers or other methods. SD Bullion says its cash-payment discount can disappear if a customer changes to a non-cash payment type. Compare the payment method shown on the confirmation with the method you actually selected. A price difference caused by changing payment method is different from a dealer unilaterally repricing a confirmed order.

What to do, in order
1. Find the document that records your order
Search email, your account history and downloaded files for the order number, timestamp, confirmation status and total. Save the original message as a file or PDF rather than relying on a later account-page display. If the seller issued both a receipt and a confirmation, keep both because the terms may assign them different legal effects.
2. Establish whether the seller accepted the order
Look for language such as “accepted,” “confirmed,” “confirmation number” or “contract.” The Perth Mint says its binding contract is formed when it issues an Order Confirmation, while its earlier receipt only acknowledges receipt. APMEX’s ordering policy says, “Once we have issued a confirmation number, all prices are locked-in whether buying from us or selling to us.” That statement describes APMEX’s policy; it does not establish a rule for every dealer.
3. Check the payment deadline and clearance requirement
Read the payment instructions attached to the order. The Perth Mint’s ordinary online and telephone terms require full cleared funds within two business days after an Order Confirmation, subject to stated exceptions. A bank transfer that has been initiated but not cleared may not satisfy such a term. Record when you paid, when the seller received the funds and whether the amount matched the confirmed total.

Review messages and terms for an alleged obvious or material pricing, description or computer error, an availability problem or a decision that the order was never accepted. The Perth Mint describes cancellation or reconfirmation when it identifies an obvious and material error in specified order information. APMEX says it may refuse an order when a confirmed price is incorrect for stated reasons, including computer problems, pricing errors, incorrect item descriptions or sudden market movements. Those clauses belong to the named sellers’ contracts; they are not a blanket permission for any dealer to rewrite an order.

5. Contact the dealer through an official channel
Use the support address or telephone number shown on the seller’s own website or your confirmation. Send one concise message containing the order number, confirmation time, original total, payment method and payment status. Ask for a written answer to these questions:
- Was the order accepted, and at what time?
- Which document records the locked or confirmed price?
- What exact term or stated error explains the new amount?
- Is the dealer asking to correct, reconfirm, cancel or collect payment?
- If cancellation is proposed, what fee or market-loss calculation applies?
Attach the confirmation and payment evidence, but redact unrelated account numbers and passwords. Keep copies of every reply.
6. Pause before cancelling or withholding payment
Do not assume that refusing payment or cancelling is cost-free. APMEX’s published policy describes cancellation charges that may include market loss plus a fee and says an order may be cancelled if payment is not received within five business days. The Royal Mint says its help process ordinarily cannot change or cancel bullion orders because bullion prices depend on live metal prices. Those policies show why you should read the specific cancellation section before taking action; they do not determine what your own contract or local law requires.
Policy details that differ by seller
Before ordering bullion, compare the following terms for the exact product and jurisdiction. The examples below show why a general statement such as “prices always lock at checkout” is unsafe.

The Perth Mint’s current terms also state an online maximum transaction value of AUD 70,000 per order. That is an order limit, not a measure of silver-market volatility. Policy figures can change, so verify the version applicable to your transaction.

If the dealer says the page price was only indicative
Ask whether the order had reached the seller’s stated acceptance event. An indicative page price may change while you browse, but the seller still needs to identify which status your order had and which term applies to it.
If the dealer says your payment method changed the price
Compare the method selected at checkout, the method shown on the confirmation and the method used to pay. Request an itemized recalculation showing the premium, discount and total for each method. Do not treat a disclosed payment-method adjustment as the same issue as a post-confirmation repricing.
If the dealer cites an obvious error
Request the original and corrected figures, the factual basis for calling the error obvious or material and the clause authorizing cancellation or reconfirmation. Ask whether you can accept the corrected order or receive a refund, and how quickly either option would occur. Keep the response in writing.

If the dealer demands more money without identifying a term
Restate the confirmed amount, ask whether the order is being cancelled or held, and request the governing clause and a deadline for your response. Avoid sending an additional amount until you understand whether doing so would accept a new contract or waive an objection.
Cancellation, refunds and nonpayment risks
Market movement can make a cancellation financially significant for either side. A policy may calculate loss from the difference between the confirmed price and the cost of replacing the metal, add a fixed fee or impose both. A payment deadline can also allow the seller to cancel after a stated number of days. Before cancelling, ask for the exact calculation, the refund method, the expected timing and any shipping or restocking treatment.
Do not infer a legal right to keep a favorable price, or a dealer’s right to raise an unfavorable one, from the spot chart alone. Contract terms, the seller’s communications, payment status, location and applicable consumer or commercial law all matter. If a large sum is involved, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer or consumer agency in the relevant jurisdiction and provide the complete order file.

A message you can send to customer service
Use a factual format that makes the requested decision clear:
Subject: Order [number] — request to confirm price and status
I placed this order on [date/time]. The confirmation shows [quantity], payment method [method], and a total of [amount]. I paid or initiated payment on [date/time]. I now see or received a different amount of [amount].
Please confirm in writing:
1. whether the order was accepted;
2. the document and time that fixed the price;
3. the term or documented error supporting the new amount; and
4. whether you are asking me to pay, reconfirm, or cancel.
If cancellation is proposed, please provide the applicable fee, market-loss calculation and refund timing.Send the message through the official channel listed in the order documents and keep the sent copy.
What to compare before your next bullion order
- Price-lock trigger: cart, submission, confirmation number, payment clearance or another defined event.
- Acceptance evidence: whether an acknowledgement is merely receipt or constitutes acceptance.
- Payment rules: deadline, cleared-funds standard and any price difference by payment method.
- Cancellation treatment: permitted reasons, market-loss formula, fixed fees and refund timing.
- Error exceptions: treatment of mispricing, computer faults, description errors, availability and unusual market moves.
- Contract and jurisdiction: the governing terms, dispute process and consumer protections that may apply where you live.
Save the terms version, confirmation and payment record at the time of purchase. That small recordkeeping step makes a later price dispute much easier to analyze.
Bottom line
A live silver price after checkout is not proof that your accepted order was repriced. Establish the order’s status, identify the seller’s price-lock event, verify payment and deadlines, check any documented error clause, and request a written explanation before paying more or cancelling. The applicable order documents and law—not a general bullion rule—determine the outcome.
