If a job, raise, extra shift, or self-employment could increase your income, do not assume you must choose between work and every benefit. First identify every benefit in your household and obtain an individualized benefits review before your earnings change. Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, housing assistance, and state programs follow different rules.
A Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) project or another Ticket to Work benefits counselor can model your combination of benefits, explain which work incentives may apply, and tell you how to report wages. Counseling is free for Social Security beneficiaries. A general article cannot calculate your result without your benefit mix, location, household, expenses, and earnings pattern.

Start with a benefits review, not a guess
The safest next step is to pause before accepting the income change and make a complete list of benefits received by you or anyone in your household. Include SSI or SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, housing assistance, and state or local programs. A raise may change one program while leaving another unchanged, and the timing of each agency’s review can differ.

Why the answer depends on the benefit
SSI is a means-tested cash payment
SSI is for people who are aged, blind, or disabled and have limited income and resources. Because earned income is part of the eligibility and payment calculation, wages can reduce the monthly SSI amount. That does not mean every dollar of wages reduces SSI by a dollar, and a raise does not automatically end all assistance.
The Social Security Administration’s 2026 SSI work-incentive guidance states: “We do not count the first $65 of earned income plus one–half of the amount over $65.” That is the standard earned-income exclusion described in the guidance, not a complete estimator. Other income, resources, applicable exclusions, impairment-related work expenses, student provisions, and other work incentives can change the result.

SSDI is based on insured status and work contributions. Its work incentives are not the SSI formula. SSA describes a trial work period, an extended period of eligibility, and Medicare-related protections for qualifying beneficiaries. Whether a particular month counts, whether payments continue, and how long health coverage lasts depend on the person’s history and earnings under the rules in effect.

SNAP, housing, and other programs have their own systems
SNAP, housing assistance, Medicaid, and state or local programs may use different definitions of income, household, expenses, and reporting periods. An agency may recalculate assistance after a wage report, at a scheduled review, or when another agency shares information. Social Security rules do not determine the outcome for these programs.
Three questions to ask before you start earning more
Will the amount of my monthly benefit change?
It might. For SSI, countable income generally affects the payment calculation after applicable exclusions. For SSDI, work incentives and earnings rules determine what happens; do not substitute the SSI calculation. SNAP or housing assistance may change under their own formulas. Ask the counselor to show each program separately, including the effective date and whether the estimate assumes steady wages or fluctuating hours.
Will my benefit immediately stop?
Not necessarily. SSI cash payments can change as income is reported, but a wage increase is not the same as an automatic termination of every benefit. SSDI has work incentives that can preserve payments during qualifying periods. If SSI cash payments stop because of earnings, Section 1619(b) may allow Medicaid to continue when its conditions are met, including that you need Medicaid in order to work and that earnings remain below the applicable threshold. Thresholds vary, eligibility is not automatic, and the state must confirm the decision.

Will I lose my Medicare or Medicaid?
Do not assume that a change in cash benefits immediately ends health coverage. SSA describes extended Medicare coverage and other protections for qualifying SSDI beneficiaries. SSI recipients may qualify for Medicaid continuation under Section 1619(b) even when SSI cash payments stop because of earnings. These protections have separate conditions and time or earnings rules, so obtain a determination for your case before declining work.

How the SSI earned-income exclusion works
The 2026 SSA statement means that, in the standard calculation, the first $65 of earned income is not counted and only one-half of the amount above $65 is counted. For illustration only, if a person had $465 of earned income and no other applicable rules, the amount above $65 would be $400 and one-half would be $200. That $200 is an illustration of the counted portion under that single exclusion; it is not the person’s predicted SSI payment or final eligibility.
Actual SSI results can differ because the agency considers other income and resources and may apply additional work incentives. Impairment-related work expenses can affect how earnings are treated. Student-related exclusions and Section 1619 provisions may matter for some people. A counselor should also examine whether income is wages, self-employment receipts, or another type of payment, because the documentation and calculation may differ.
Ask for the calculation in writing: gross earnings used, exclusions applied, countable income, estimated SSI payment, and the month each figure is expected to take effect. Recalculate when pay, hours, expenses, household composition, or state rules change.

SSDI beneficiaries should ask specifically about the trial work period, the extended period of eligibility, and Medicare protections. These are distinct from SSI’s earned-income exclusion. A counselor or SSA representative must determine whether particular work months and earnings meet the applicable definitions and how the person’s benefit timeline is affected.

Do not infer that a single paycheck ends SSDI, and do not infer that an SSI-style exclusion protects SSDI. Report work as instructed, retain proof of the report, and ask what happens if the job ends or earnings fall. SSDI work decisions are evaluated against the individual’s disability benefit history and current rules, not just the gross amount on one pay stub.
Health coverage deserves a separate check
Cash assistance and medical coverage can follow different paths. For an SSI recipient, Section 1619(b) may preserve Medicaid after SSI cash payments stop due to earnings if the person remains otherwise eligible, needs Medicaid to work, and stays under the applicable earnings threshold. State administration and thresholds matter, so confirmation from the state Medicaid agency or a qualified counselor is essential.
For an SSDI recipient, ask how the trial work period and extended Medicare coverage interact with your work start date and earnings. Do not cancel coverage or assume a private replacement is necessary until the responsible agency explains your status in writing.
Use this step-by-step plan before changing your income
- Inventory the household. Write down every benefit, the recipient, the current monthly amount, renewal or review date, and the agency that administers it. Include health coverage and assistance received by other household members.
- Describe the proposed work precisely. Record employer or self-employment type, start date, hourly wage or expected receipts, hours per week, likely fluctuations, and whether the change is a raise, extra hours, seasonal work, or a new business.
- Contact a WIPA project or Ticket to Work provider. Request individualized benefits counseling before earnings change. WIPA counseling is free for Social Security beneficiaries. Ask whether another specialist is needed for housing, SNAP, Medicaid, or a state program.
- Bring practical records. Take award notices, recent benefit statements, current income information, the proposed pay and hours, household details requested by the counselor, and records of disability-related expenses or work supports. These are useful preparation items, not a universal SSA checklist.
- Ask for program-by-program answers. Have the counselor explain the expected cash-payment change, health-coverage status, work incentives, reporting method and deadline, treatment of expenses, and the result if work stops or pay decreases.
- Make a cash-flow decision. Compare expected take-home wages, any changed benefits, work-related costs, transportation, care, and health-coverage consequences. Use the counselor’s individualized figures rather than a generic online calculator.
Report earnings and keep an audit trail
Ticket to Work guidance emphasizes wage reporting because accurate, timely reports can help avoid overpayments. Confirm with SSA or your counselor exactly how and when to report for your situation. The correct process can depend on the benefit, the type of work, and local administration.

- Check subsequent benefit notices against what you reported and ask for clarification promptly if the figures do not match.
Records protect you when an agency later asks when a change occurred or how earnings were calculated. They also make a revised benefits review faster.
What to do if work or earnings later decrease
A benefits plan is not one-time paperwork. If hours are cut, a job ends, a contract is lost, or disability-related costs rise, contact the counselor and the relevant agencies promptly. Ask whether a lower current income changes the cash-payment estimate, whether a prior work incentive remains available, and whether expedited reinstatement or another protection could apply. SSA describes expedited reinstatement among SSI work incentives, but eligibility must be determined for the individual.
Do not simply stop reporting because a job ended. The agency needs the end date and final wages to update its records. Continue saving documentation until the change appears correctly in official notices.
Compare the programs without mixing their rules
| Question | SSI | SSDI | SNAP, housing, Medicaid, or state programs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Why benefits are paid | Means-tested assistance for people who are aged, blind, or disabled with limited income and resources. | Disability insurance based on insured status and work contributions. | Program-specific eligibility, household, income, expense, and administrative rules. |

| Health-coverage issue | Section 1619(b) may permit Medicaid continuation when its conditions and applicable threshold are met. | Medicare protections may apply under the SSDI work-incentive rules. | Coverage and continuation decisions are made under the relevant program’s rules. |

Common mistakes that create avoidable problems
- Treating all benefits as one program. A Social Security answer cannot predict SNAP, rent assistance, or state Medicaid.
- Using the SSI formula for SSDI. SSDI has different work incentives and health-coverage rules.
- Assuming gross wages equal the final countable amount. Exclusions, expenses, other income, and program definitions can change what an agency counts.
- Waiting for an overpayment notice. Ask how to report before or as work begins and keep proof of each report.
- Ignoring fluctuating income. A stable monthly estimate may be wrong for seasonal work, variable shifts, commissions, or self-employment.
- Counting only the wage increase. Include transportation, equipment, care, taxes, disability-related expenses, and any benefit changes in the household budget.
- Assuming Medicaid or Medicare ends with cash benefits. Health coverage may have continuation protections, but only the responsible agency can confirm them.
When a decision cannot be made from general information
The exact result remains unresolved until a counselor reviews your state, benefit combination, household, earnings pattern, resources, and applicable work incentives. State Medicaid options and local benefit rules can change. Verify current SSA guidance and any threshold before relying on a dollar estimate.
The practical decision rule is simple: do not reject work solely because you fear an immediate loss of every benefit, and do not accept work assuming every benefit will remain unchanged. Get an individualized review, understand the reporting steps, protect your records, and revisit the plan whenever income or household circumstances change.
