If the stated window has expired, use the program’s formal dispute process and escalate unresolved problems.
Start with the exact reward and transaction
“Why didn’t my credit card rewards post?” has no single answer because a routine purchase reward, a category multiplier, a sign-up bonus, and a transfer to a travel partner can follow different rules. Write down the details before calling anyone:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The exact card and rewards program.
- The purchase date, amount, merchant and transaction status.
- The reward you expected: base points, a category bonus, cash back, miles, a sign-up bonus or a limited-time offer.
- The calculation you used to estimate the reward.
- When you enrolled in or activated an offer, if activation was required.
This prevents a support representative from investigating the wrong transaction or applying the wrong promotion. Promotional rewards can have conditions that do not apply to ordinary earning.
Check whether the transaction or reward is still pending
Look in two places
Review both your card’s transaction activity and its rewards activity. A card charge can remain pending until the merchant submits it for settlement. Separately, an issuer may show earned points as pending before they become available for redemption. A pending charge is not proof that the purchase is ineligible, and an absent balance entry is not proof that points were denied.

Pending points are issuer-specific
American Express says eligible Membership Rewards points initially appear as pending. The timing and display can depend on the account type; its guidance includes a separate billing-cycle detail for Corporate Cards. Do not assume every issuer labels rewards this way or releases them on the same schedule. Capture a screenshot showing the pending status and the date.
Read the terms that control eligibility
Verify the purchase category
Check the current earning table for the exact card. Merchant coding, not the item you bought, generally determines whether a category bonus applies. A purchase that looks like travel, dining or a grocery expense to you may be coded differently by the payment network or merchant. If the terms exclude a transaction type, the base reward or bonus may not apply even though the charge settled successfully.
Check offer enrollment and dates
Limited-time offers commonly require enrollment or activation before the purchase. Compare the enrollment confirmation with the transaction date and the offer’s start and end dates. Save the confirmation email or account screen showing that you enrolled. A purchase made before activation, after expiration, or through a channel excluded by the offer may not qualify.

For a sign-up bonus, add only the purchases the offer defines as eligible. Returns, credits, refunded purchases and excluded fees can reduce net qualifying spend. Check the deadline measured from account opening or another date specified in the offer. Do not count a pending authorization as completed spend until the terms say it qualifies.

Review payment and account conditions
Some programs tie earning, retention or reinstatement of rewards to payment status or account standing. American Express describes a payment-related condition for points associated with a statement and provides a process for requesting reinstatement in certain situations. This is an example, not a rule for every card. Read your agreement for requirements such as making at least the minimum payment by the due date, keeping the account open, or avoiding a delinquency.
Keep making at least the required card payment while you investigate. Rewards are not a substitute for the statement minimum, and skipping a payment can create fees, interest or a separate account problem.
Use the program’s stated posting window
There is no universal answer to “How long does cash back take to show up?” The trigger may be settlement of the transaction, the end of a statement period, fulfillment of a minimum-spend requirement, or a later review of an offer. Find the timing language in the current card agreement, rewards terms or official FAQ.

A billing cycle is not always the same length as a calendar month. Record the statement closing dates that apply to your account and the date the transaction settled. If the terms promise a period after settlement or after a statement closes, calculate from that trigger rather than from the purchase date.

Follow this diagnostic sequence
- Identify the claim. Write the card, program, merchant, date, amount and expected reward type. Separate a regular earning claim from a promotional bonus.
- Confirm settlement. Check whether the charge is pending, reversed, refunded or fully posted. A reversed or refunded transaction may not produce final rewards.
- Inspect rewards activity. Look for pending, posted, adjusted or expired entries. Save screenshots with visible dates and transaction details.
- Read the applicable terms. Verify category coding, exclusions, activation, offer dates, minimum spend, net-of-returns treatment and account or payment conditions.
- Compare the official timeline. Use the current agreement or FAQ for your card, not a general internet estimate. Mark the date the stated window ends.
- Reconcile the arithmetic. Compare eligible dollars with the earn rate and any cap. Check whether a statement credit or points adjustment already appeared under a different description.
- Contact the correct administrator. Start with the number on the back of the card or the rewards program’s official account and support route.
- Escalate when the window has expired. Ask for a case number and use any formal rewards-dispute channel described in the terms.
Prepare evidence before contacting support
Good records make it easier to identify the transaction and test the eligibility calculation. Gather:
- The card statement showing the settled charge, merchant and amount.
- The receipt or order confirmation.
- The offer terms, enrollment confirmation and screenshots of the account page.
- Screenshots of pending, missing or adjusted rewards activity.
- A calculation showing the expected base reward and bonus.
- A timeline of calls, secure messages or chats, including dates, representatives, case numbers and promised follow-up.
These documents are practical preparation inferred from issuer dispute procedures; they are not a universal legal evidentiary rule. Keep copies outside the card website in case the account display changes.
Contact the issuer or rewards administrator with a specific request
Use the phone number on the card, secure messaging inside the account, or the program’s official customer-service route. American Express directs customers to online account access or card customer care for the issues described in its FAQs. Diners Club directs balance questions to its customer-service number. A co-branded card may require both the card issuer and the partner program, but begin with the channel named in your terms.
Give the representative a concise chronology:
- “The transaction for [merchant and amount] settled on [date].”
- “The offer or card terms state [earning rate or bonus condition].”
- “I expected [number or value] after [posting trigger].”
- “The published window ended on [date], and the reward is still absent or marked [status].”
Ask four direct questions:
- Was the transaction coded and treated as eligible?
- Is the reward pending, withheld, adjusted or rejected?
- If it was rejected, which exact term or condition controls the decision?
- Can you open a research case and provide the case number and expected response date?
If the representative refers you to a partner, record the referral, the department, and the reason. Ask the issuer to investigate through its rewards channel when the card terms make it responsible for administration.

Use a formal rewards dispute when the terms provide one
A customer-service inquiry and a formal dispute may be different processes. Read the rewards terms for the required channel, documentation and deadline. In the cited Caesars Rewards Visa example, customers may dispute missing credits by phone or mail. Those terms describe a 60-day period from the date credits post, or 90 days after the purchase when credits never posted, and allow a receipt or written confirmation to be requested. Those limits apply to that program’s terms only; they are not a general deadline for other cards.
When filing, state the transaction, the reward calculation, the relevant clause, the date the posting window ended, and the remedy requested. Send copies rather than originals and retain proof of submission. A rewards dispute does not replace rights or procedures for an unauthorized or incorrect charge under the credit-card account agreement. If the charge itself is wrong, address that billing issue through the separate billing-dispute process as well.
Handle partner transfers and technical failures
Missing rewards can arise after points move to an airline, hotel, retailer or other co-brand partner. Save the transfer confirmation, destination account number, timestamps and case records from both organizations. Ask each party to identify whether the points were rejected, reversed, expired or lost in a system error.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has discussed situations in which a partner’s technical failure causes rewards to disappear. Its Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-07 explains that covered rewards operators and service providers may be responsible in some circumstances even when a third party contributed. The circular is a consumer-protection statement, not a ruling that every individual loss is unlawful or that a particular consumer will recover points.

“Covered persons that offer, provide, or operate credit card rewards programs, and their service providers, may violate the prohibition against unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices in a variety of circumstances, including instances where some of the conduct in question may be attributable to a third party, such as a merchant partner, and regardless of whether covered persons or service providers are taking actions consistent with rewards program terms.”

If the program’s stated window has passed and ordinary support does not resolve the case, submit a complaint through the CFPB’s official complaint process and attach the relevant records. Describe the facts and the response you received; do not claim a legal violation unless the facts and applicable law support it.
Know what the broader rewards data does—and does not—tell you
Rewards are widespread, so a missing balance can be financially meaningful. The CFPB’s 2024 circular reports that more than 90 percent of general-purpose credit-card spending occurred on rewards cards in 2019. It also reports that 75 percent of general-purpose credit cards were rewards cards by the end of 2022, consumers earned more than $40 billion in rewards from major general-purpose cards in 2022—more than 50 percent above 2019—and consumer rewards balances exceeded $33 billion at the end of 2022, up 40 percent relative to the fourth quarter of 2019.
Those figures describe the U.S. market’s scale. They do not estimate the probability that your reward is missing or predict the outcome of your dispute. The cited material is U.S.-focused; card rules in other countries may use different administrators, timelines and complaint routes.
When to escalate immediately
- The card’s published posting window has expired.
- An advertised reward was denied based on a condition that was not clearly disclosed in the applicable agreement or offer.
- Points disappeared during a transfer or redemption and both parties cannot explain the adjustment.
- Support gives contradictory answers or refuses to identify the term used to deny the reward.
- You are approaching a program-specific dispute deadline.
Escalation does not guarantee reinstatement. The available remedy—posting points, restoring miles, issuing cash back or explaining a valid exclusion—depends on the terms and the documented facts.
