What to Do When an India Post Time Deposit Matures

Do not assume that a maturity date means the money is waiting to be withdrawn. First confirm whether your National Savings Time Deposit (TD) is due for repayment or has already been renewed automatically. Then choose between closing it and receiving the proceeds or keeping the money invested for another term. Check the account record, the rate and tenure that would apply, and the documents required before giving closure or renewal instructions.

Start by checking the account’s actual status

A maturity date on your passbook is only the starting point. India Post’s indexed Core Banking Solution (CBS) manual describes automatic renewal for the same period as the original deposit, so an account may have moved into a new term instead of becoming an immediately payable balance. The manual says the renewed deposit uses the rate in force on the renewal date, not necessarily the rate you received when you first opened the account.

  • Find the TD passbook or account number.
  • Record the stated maturity date and original tenure.
  • Check the account in India Post internet banking if that service is enabled for your account.
  • If the online record is unavailable or unclear, ask the servicing post office to confirm whether the account is due for payment, renewed, or awaiting a manual instruction.
  • Ask for the current tenure, applicable rate and next maturity date if the account has renewed.

Do not close or transfer money based only on an old passbook entry. The post office’s account record determines the status that staff can act on.

How automatic renewal is described in India Post guidance

Renewal keeps the original period

The indexed CBS Manual says Finacle automatically renews a TD at maturity for the same period for which it was opened. For example, an account originally opened for one period is not described as switching to a different tenure automatically. Confirm the exact period shown on your account rather than relying on a general example.

The rate resets on the renewal date

Automatic renewal is described as using the rate prevailing on the date of renewal. Your original certificate or passbook rate therefore may not be the rate earning on the renewed deposit. India Post’s banking-services page displayed a broad National Savings TD range of 6.9% to 7.5% on 13 October 2026. That range is page content for the scheme as a whole, not a tenure-specific quotation or a promise that a particular account will receive one of those figures. Obtain the current rate for your account’s tenure before accepting renewal.

If an automatic-renewal batch missed the account

The indexed manual says that when an account is missed by the auto-renewal batch and the depositor wants renewal from the maturity date, the account holder may apply in writing. A designated employee can process the request subject to supervisor verification. Ask the post office whether this procedure applies to your account and what written format it currently accepts; do not assume that a late request will be backdated without approval.

Check the status step by step

  1. Gather identifying details. Take the TD passbook or certificate, account number, depositor name and maturity date. If you use internet banking, have the relevant login and linked savings-account details available.
  2. Review the online record. Use India Post internet banking, where enabled, to see whether the account is marked mature, renewed or otherwise restricted. Save or print the displayed status for your records.
  3. Confirm unclear entries at the post office. Ask staff to state the account status, the date from which any new term runs, the renewed tenure and the rate being applied. Request a written calculation if figures are disputed.
  4. Choose the correct transaction. A renewed account generally requires a closure or another approved maturity instruction; an account still due for repayment can be handled through the available maturity-closure channel.
  5. Record the destination of funds. Before signing, confirm whether proceeds will move to a linked savings account, another bank account or be paid through a method the office currently supports.

If you want the maturity proceeds

Internet-banking closure

An India Post customer-facing TD explainer indexed in search says a TD may be closed at maturity through internet banking, with the proceeds transferred to the savings account. Treat this as conditional guidance: online closure must be enabled for your account and may depend on the account’s status and channel permissions. In internet banking, look for the TD closure or maturity-payment function, verify the amount and destination account, and retain the transaction acknowledgement. If the option is absent, do not repeatedly submit unrelated requests; ask the post office which channel is available.

Closure through the servicing post office

At a post office, ask for the current account-closure form and the identification or account documents required for your case. Complete the form using the TD account number exactly as recorded. Before handing it over, ask staff to show the maturity value, any interest adjustment and the expected credit or payment date. Keep the receipt or acknowledgement until the money appears in the destination account.

Payment to a bank account

India Post’s indexed savings-schemes FAQ says a maturity value may be paid to a bank account when the closure form is submitted with bank evidence such as the first page of the bank passbook or a cancelled cheque. The legacy FAQ endpoint is not currently available, so confirm the latest form, accepted document, account-name matching rules and whether a self-attested copy is required at your servicing office. Bring the original passbook and the bank evidence the office asks you to provide.

If you leave the TD unpaid after maturity

The indexed CBS Manual describes post-maturity interest as simple interest at the applicable savings-account rate. It says periods shorter than one complete month are ignored, so the calculation is based on complete months rather than a daily compounding formula. Ask India Post to calculate the amount through the date you plan to close or renew.

An older official manual excerpt refers to a maximum two-year period for this interest and to calculation on the maturity value. The newer indexed excerpt available for the CBS procedure does not state whether that cap remains current. Do not assume that two years is still the governing limit; ask the post office to identify the rule and calculate your entitlement under the rules currently applied to your account.

Leaving an account untouched can therefore produce a different result from renewing it at the current TD rate. Obtain the calculation before deciding to delay, especially when several complete months have passed.

Renewal or payout: compare the decision on four axes

Question Continue in a TD Take the proceeds
Access to money Funds remain committed for the renewed tenure, subject to the scheme’s withdrawal rules. Funds become available after the maturity-closure process and credit time.
Rate and return Uses the rate applicable on the renewal date; verify the tenure-specific figure. Receives the maturity value and any applicable post-maturity amount rather than a new TD return.
Term Automatic renewal is described as the original period; confirm the new maturity date. No new lock-in period begins unless you open another deposit.
Practical action Confirm that renewal is recorded and obtain the rate, tenure and maturity date. Submit the supported online or post-office closure instruction and verify the credit destination.

Choose renewal when preserving a fixed-term allocation matters more than immediate access and the current rate and tenure suit your plan. Choose payout when you need liquidity, have a near-term expense, or want to reassess where the money belongs. Neither choice is universally better.

Check rates, taxes and liquidity before renewing

Rate

Use the current tenure-wise rate supplied by India Post for the renewal date. The 6.9%–7.5% range displayed on the banking-services page on 13 October 2026 is only a broad scheme range; it does not establish the rate for your specific tenure or for a future date.

Liquidity

List when you might need the money and keep enough accessible outside a new TD for expected expenses. A renewal can make the balance less convenient to access than a savings account, while leaving it unpaid may earn only the applicable savings-account rate under the post-maturity rules.

Tax

Your tax result depends on your circumstances and the rules applicable to you. The account guidance does not determine an individual depositor’s tax treatment. If tax affects the decision, use current official tax information or ask a qualified adviser rather than assuming that renewal or payout has the same consequences for everyone.

Do not confuse maturity closure with premature closure

A deposit that has reached its maturity date is handled differently from one you are trying to close early. The 2021 manual excerpt says withdrawal is generally not allowed during the first six months and that an eligible early closure may receive reduced interest. Before requesting an early closure, ask India Post for a written calculation showing the interest rate, deduction or reduction and the net amount payable. Do not use a maturity-closure instruction for a deposit that has not matured.

What to do in common problem cases

The passbook says “matured,” but no money is visible

Ask whether the account was automatically renewed or whether it is awaiting a closure instruction. Request the current status and, if renewed, the new maturity date and rate.

The account renewed at a rate you did not expect

Ask which rate was in force on the renewal date and which tenure was applied. The indexed manual describes rate-at-renewal treatment, so the original opening rate may not control. Request the calculation in writing if the amount appears wrong.

You want renewal from the original maturity date, but the account was missed

Ask whether the written-request process for a missed auto-renewal batch applies. The indexed manual describes designated-employee processing subject to supervisor verification; the office can tell you the current form and approval path.

You want payment into a bank account

Bring the closure form and the bank evidence the servicing office currently accepts, such as the first passbook page or a cancelled cheque. Confirm that the name and account details match the depositor record before submission.

You delayed for months and disagree with the interest

Request a month-by-month calculation, including the savings-account rate used, the number of complete months counted and any applicable limit. Ask which current rule supports the calculation rather than relying on an older two-year reference.

Before you leave or submit online

  • Confirm the TD status and account number.
  • Write down the rate, tenure and maturity date for any renewal.
  • For payout, verify the maturity amount, interest treatment and credit destination.
  • Submit only the current closure or renewal form and keep the acknowledgement.
  • Check the destination account after the stated processing period and contact the office promptly if the credit is missing.

The safest sequence is status first, calculation second, instruction third. That prevents a mistaken closure request on a renewed account and lets you compare the current TD return with the liquidity and post-maturity interest you would otherwise receive.
