What to Do When a Winning Stock Becomes Too Large a Share of Your Portfolio

A stock can become a concentration problem simply because it rose faster than everything else you own. The practical response is to measure its share of your entire portfolio, compare that exposure with your goals and risk tolerance, and choose among trimming shares, directing new money elsewhere, or making a staged change. Before selling in a taxable account, review each tax lot, adjusted basis, holding period, account rules, fees and your expected tax bill. There is no universal percentage that tells every investor when to sell.

Why a winning stock can change your risk without another purchase

Suppose you bought one company as a modest part of a diversified plan. If that stock doubles while your other holdings barely move, it becomes a larger percentage of your assets even though you did nothing. Your future results then depend more heavily on one company, its industry, its management and events that affect it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The SEC explains diversification as spreading money among investments to reduce overall portfolio risk. That principle applies to a fast-rising individual stock as much as to a new purchase. A gain is welcome, but the position may no longer fit the role or risk level you originally chose.

Start with a measurement, not a sale decision. Calculate the stock’s current market value divided by the value of all investable assets you are evaluating. Include relevant exposure through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds, employer equity, options and closely related holdings when those exposures could rise and fall with the same company or sector. This calculation describes your situation; it is not a prescribed threshold.

For example, in a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio, a $15,000 position is 15%. If the shares rise to $30,000 while the rest of the portfolio remains at $85,000, the total is $115,000 and the stock is about 26.1% of the portfolio. The investor has not bought more shares, but the portfolio is now materially more dependent on that company.

Decide what “too large” means for your plan

No SEC or IRS source establishes a universal percentage at which every investor should sell. The appropriate exposure depends on circumstances that differ from person to person.

Revisit the job of the holding

  • What role did the stock have in your original allocation: a small satellite position, a core holding, employer compensation or a speculative investment?
  • Has the company’s business or your reason for owning it changed, or has only its price changed?
  • Would you buy the same dollar amount today if you did not already own it?

These questions separate an investment thesis from a portfolio-size decision. You can still believe a company is attractive and decide that one company should represent less of your wealth.

Match exposure to time horizon and risk capacity

Investor.gov states that the asset allocation that works best depends largely on your time horizon and ability to tolerate risk. Money needed soon for housing, education, a business or retirement may not be able to withstand a sharp decline in one stock. Stable income, emergency reserves and other assets can affect how much volatility you can absorb, but they do not eliminate concentration risk.

Account for the rest of your financial life

Include company exposure outside the brokerage account. Unvested or vested employer shares, stock options, restricted stock, a spouse’s holdings and a concentrated position in a retirement plan can all create related risk. A diversified fund may also hold the same company among its largest positions. Several funds are not automatically diversified if they track the same narrow sector or have overlapping top holdings.

Three ways to reduce single-stock concentration

The SEC describes several rebalancing methods. Compare them on how much exposure they remove, taxes and fees, liquidity, diversification quality and fit with your plan.

Method How it works Concentration effect Tax and cost considerations When it may fit
Sell part and reinvest Sell selected shares, then direct proceeds to assets that are underweight in your plan. Reduces company exposure immediately by the amount sold. A taxable sale can realize gains or losses; trading costs and fund expenses may apply. You need a prompt reduction and can accept the current tax impact.
Direct new contributions elsewhere Keep the shares but send future savings to underweight asset classes, sectors or regions. Reduces the stock’s percentage gradually as other assets grow. May avoid an immediate sale, but does not remove risk quickly; contributions still have investment costs. Your cash flow is substantial and the current exposure is tolerable while it declines.
Stage the change Sell or redirect money in several planned increments according to a written schedule. Reduces exposure over time while retaining some participation in future gains. Multiple trades can create additional costs and several tax events; the market may move between transactions. You want a measured transition and understand that staging cannot guarantee a better price or tax result.

Redirecting contributions is not automatically tax-free in every setting, and selling is not automatically wrong. The choice should follow your allocation, cash needs, tax position and tolerance for the remaining company risk.

How to build a rebalancing decision step by step

  1. Inventory every related holding. List the stock in each account, fund positions that may own it, employer equity and derivatives. Record market value and the percentage of total assets for which you are making the decision.
  2. Write your target allocation. Identify the intended mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other assets, plus any deliberate sector, geographic or single-company exposure. If you never had a target, create a provisional plan based on goals, time horizon and risk tolerance rather than copying a fixed internet rule.
  3. Measure the gap. Compare the current position with the role you want it to play. A gap can be corrected by selling, by buying underweight assets, or by both. The size of the gap is an input to the decision, not an instruction to liquidate.
  4. Check liquidity and near-term obligations. Keep emergency savings and money needed on a known schedule in an appropriate form. Do not treat a volatile stock as a substitute for cash simply because it has performed well.
  5. Model each implementation method. Estimate how much company exposure remains after a partial sale, how long contributions would take to change the percentage, and what happens if the stock falls before a staged plan is complete.
  6. Review taxes and transaction costs before placing an order. Use current lot-level basis, dates, account type and applicable tax rules. Include commissions or spreads, fund expenses and any advisory cost.
  7. Place the change and document it. Record the reason, amount, destination allocation and date. A written rule helps prevent a rising price from repeatedly recreating the same concentration.
  8. Recheck the whole portfolio. After reinvesting proceeds, inspect asset class, sector, geography and fund overlap. A sale that moves money into a narrowly focused fund may simply replace one concentration with another.

Tax details to check before selling

In a taxable account, basis generally begins with what you paid and can be adjusted by later events. The gain or loss is based on the difference between the sale proceeds and the applicable adjusted basis, so different purchases of the same stock can have very different consequences.

Holding period

IRS Publication 550 (2025) generally treats investment property held more than one year as producing a long-term capital gain or loss and property held one year or less as short-term. For market-traded securities, the holding period generally starts the day after the acquisition trade date and ends on the sale trade date. Confirm the edition and rules for the tax year that applies to your return.

Choose lots deliberately

Brokerages may offer specific-lot identification, first-in-first-out or other accounting methods. Review the available lots before submitting an order and verify that the broker records the method you intended. A decision to sell low-basis, recently acquired shares can produce a different tax result from selling higher-basis or long-held shares, even when the number of shares is identical.

Account type and special situations

Tax treatment differs among taxable brokerage accounts, traditional retirement accounts, Roth accounts and employee plans. Employer stock, restricted stock, options, gifts and inherited shares can involve rules that are not captured by a simple purchase-price calculation. Obtain current guidance for those facts rather than applying the general Publication 550 description mechanically.

Charitable transfers

For an eligible charitable contribution of capital-gain property, the IRS instructions for Form 8283 describe circumstances in which a deduction may be based on fair market value, subject to exceptions, limits and documentation. This is a possible planning route for a charitable investor, not a universal substitute for selling. Confirm eligibility and the tax effect with a qualified adviser and the receiving organization.

How diversification can fail after you sell

Moving proceeds into “several funds” does not necessarily solve the problem. Check each fund’s asset class, sector emphasis, geographic exposure and largest holdings. Two broad-looking funds may share many of the same companies; a technology fund and a total-market fund may both leave you heavily exposed to the same industry. Use the holdings reports and prospectuses for the relevant date, because compositions change.

A more useful test is whether the proposed destination behaves differently enough from the original stock to improve the portfolio’s resilience. Diversification cannot prevent every loss, but it can reduce dependence on one issuer or one narrow economic theme.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a universal “never exceed” number

A fixed percentage may be easy to remember but is not established by the cited SEC or IRS materials as a rule for all investors. Correct the mistake by tying the decision to your plan, risk capacity, time horizon, other exposures and tax costs.

Confusing confidence with appropriate position size

A strong belief in a company does not answer how much of your total wealth should depend on it. Keep the investment thesis and the portfolio-risk decision as separate questions.

Ignoring embedded exposure

Counting only the shares in one account understates risk when funds, compensation or a spouse’s account own the same issuer. Consolidate the view before rebalancing.

Waiting for a better price

Trying to identify the perfect exit point turns a risk decision into a market-timing decision. A staged plan can reduce regret, but it cannot guarantee a higher price or lower tax bill. If the concentration is inconsistent with your plan, delaying leaves the exposure unchanged.

Forgetting taxes and fees

The SEC’s beginner guide advises considering transaction fees and tax consequences before rebalancing. Estimate both with current personal information; a tax-efficient method that leaves unacceptable concentration may still be unsuitable, and a quick sale may create an avoidable bill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When professional help is sensible

Consider a tax adviser or fiduciary financial professional when the holding involves employee stock compensation, inherited or gifted shares, a very large unrealized gain, charitable giving, multiple account types or competing household goals. Ask what credentials apply, how the person is paid, what conflicts exist and whether the recommendation covers your full portfolio. Professional input should clarify your choices, not replace a written understanding of the risk you are accepting.

A maintenance plan after the first rebalance

Set a review schedule tied to your goals rather than reacting to every price movement. At each review, recalculate the stock’s share of total assets, update fund overlap and employer exposure, check upcoming cash needs and inspect tax lots. Decide in advance what event will trigger a review—such as a material change in your goals, employment or allocation—so a future rally does not silently recreate the same concentration.
