Usually, do not rewrite your investment plan just because one fund has recently won. First check whether its growth has pushed your portfolio away from the allocation you chose for your goals. If the target mix still matches your time horizon, risk tolerance and finances, a disciplined rebalance may be all that is needed. A genuine change in those circumstances is the reason to reconsider the target itself.
This U.S.-focused guide explains how to separate performance excitement from a sound plan review, evaluate the fund in context, choose a rebalancing rule and account for taxes and trading costs.

Start with the distinction that prevents most mistakes
A plan change alters the target mix you intend to hold—for example, the percentages assigned to stocks, bonds and cash. A rebalance leaves that target in place and trades, redirects contributions or uses cash flows to bring the actual portfolio back toward it. The SEC describes rebalancing as “bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix.”

Those actions answer different questions. A fund’s return answers what happened in the market; it does not by itself show that your objective, time horizon, ability to tolerate losses or financial circumstances have changed. Investor.gov says common reasons to change an allocation include a changed time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation or goal. Relative performance alone generally calls for measuring drift against the existing target, not chasing the recent winner. Its investor guide cautions that savvy investors typically do not increase stocks merely because the stock market is hot.

1. Revisit why the portfolio exists
Before looking at the fund’s chart, write down the job your portfolio must do. A short worksheet makes an emotional reaction easier to test.
- Goal: Identify the amount and purpose of the money, such as retirement, a home purchase or an education expense.
- Time horizon: Note when withdrawals are expected and whether that date has moved closer or farther away.
- Risk tolerance: Consider how much decline you could stay invested through without abandoning the plan.
- Financial situation: Include changes in income, emergency savings, debt, insurance, dependents and other assets.
If these facts are materially different, a target-allocation review can be justified. If they are unchanged, a winning fund is evidence of a price movement, not evidence that your plan has become unsuitable. Fidelity’s portfolio-checkup guidance likewise starts with whether the mix still fits your goals and circumstances, rather than with the largest recent return.

List every holding across your accounts, classify each by asset class and calculate its current percentage of the whole portfolio. Compare those percentages with the targets in your investment policy or written plan. Include workplace plans, brokerage accounts and cash that you consider part of the same objective.
Look beyond stocks versus bonds
A fund can create drift inside an asset class. Check exposure by region, sector, company size, investment style and issuer. Two funds both labeled “stock” may have very different concentrations. A broad allocation can become dependent on one country, industry or manager even when the headline stock/bond split appears on target. Fidelity recommends reviewing diversification within asset categories as well as the overall mix.

Use a simple drift calculation
For each category, subtract the target percentage from the current percentage. Also calculate the dollar amount needed to return to target. This separates a visually impressive gain from a meaningful change in portfolio risk. A 2-percentage-point move in a small account may be less consequential than the same percentage-point move in a large concentrated position.
Investor.gov illustrates the mechanics with a hypothetical portfolio that began at 60% stocks. After stocks rose faster than the other holdings, stocks represented 80%. The example demonstrates how rebalancing can restore a selected allocation; it is not a recommendation that every investor should hold 60% stocks.

Performance is useful only when the comparison is fair. Fidelity says, “When evaluating performance, context is key,” in its June 12, 2026 portfolio-checkup article. Apply that context before deciding that the fund deserves a larger role.
Use an appropriate benchmark
Compare the fund with the benchmark that matches its stated strategy and with comparable investments, over a reasonable period. A technology-focused fund should not be judged against a broad bond index, and a fund that owns international companies should not automatically be measured against a U.S.-only index. Read the prospectus, shareholder reports and fact sheet for the benchmark definition and any changes.
Check what risk produced the return
Ask whether the fund took more market, sector, currency, credit or concentration risk than your plan allows. Review volatility, drawdowns and the pattern of returns—not only the best period. A higher return may be compensation for exposures that can reverse sharply.

Account for net costs and structural changes
Use returns after the fund’s expense ratio and other expenses where available. Check for a manager change, a new investment mandate, a benchmark change, a merger or a fee change. A historical record may combine periods managed under different approaches. Fidelity’s guidance recommends judging the investment against your strategy and reviewing fund documents rather than treating a rising share price as a stand-alone verdict.
4. Understand why “buy the winner” can concentrate risk
Recent leadership often looks obvious in hindsight. Vanguard’s February 14, 2025 article, using relevant MSCI indexes and historical Bloomberg data through December 31, 2024, shows how progressively narrower choices produced very different hypothetical outcomes from $100 invested ten years earlier:
| Historical segment (hypothetical) | Ending value of $100 | Annualized return |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. stocks | $334 | 13% |
| Non-U.S. stocks | $160 | 5% |
| U.S. growth stocks | $470 | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| U.S. information technology stocks | $654 | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Magnificent Seven group | $4,433 | Not stated in the cited comparison |
These are historical illustrations, not forecasts, guarantees or a statistic about what investors generally do. The progression shows the trade-off: moving from a broad market to a small group can greatly increase concentration. Vanguard also notes that diversification cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses. A fund that led for one period may simply have had the particular exposure that was rewarded during that period.
Before increasing a winner, identify how much of the portfolio you would ultimately place in its underlying holdings. Look through the fund’s top positions and overlap with other funds. A “different” fund can duplicate the same companies or sectors you already own.
5. Select a rebalancing rule before you trade
A written trigger reduces the chance that every new high or market headline becomes a trading signal. The SEC describes calendar and allocation-drift approaches; Vanguard discusses calendar, threshold and combined methods. The cited sources do not establish one universally correct threshold.

| Method | Trigger | Monitoring burden | Typical trade and tax considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | Check on a recurring date or interval you choose | Periodic reminder; simple to follow | May sell even when drift is small, creating avoidable costs in some accounts |
| Threshold review | Act when an allocation moves beyond a preselected amount | Requires current balances and ongoing monitoring | Trades only when drift is meaningful under your rule; a sale may create tax consequences |
| Combined review | Check on a calendar and trade only when a threshold is reached | Moderate; combines a schedule with a guardrail | Can limit unnecessary trades while ensuring the portfolio is reviewed |
The best rule is one you can apply consistently and explain. Record the target, the review date, the drift trigger and the action you will take. Rebalancing manages risk; it is not a promise to maximize returns or predict the next market leader.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Rebalance with the least disruptive method available
Use new money first when it fits
Direct new contributions to underweight categories instead of adding to the fund that has already grown above target. Redirect dividends or interest the same way. Vanguard also identifies cash flows and withdrawals as possible tools. This can reduce or avoid selling, although it may take time to correct a large imbalance.
Sell only what is necessary
If cash flows are insufficient, a partial sale of the overweight holding can move the portfolio toward target without eliminating the investment. Do not assume a full exit is required. Recalculate weights after each trade because market prices can move between orders.
Consider account location and tax lots
In a taxable account, selling can create a realized gain or loss; in a retirement account, the immediate tax treatment may differ. Vanguard discusses prioritizing higher-cost-basis shares and partial rebalancing as possible ways to limit taxes and transaction costs. Those are examples, not individualized tax advice. Confirm the rules that apply to your jurisdiction, account and tax lots with a qualified tax professional when the amounts are material.
Check fees and trading mechanics
Review commissions, bid-ask spreads, short-term trading policies, redemption fees and any account-specific charges before placing an order. The SEC and Vanguard both emphasize weighing transaction costs and tax consequences. A mathematically precise rebalance can be counterproductive if its costs exceed the risk benefit of correcting a small drift.

When changing the target allocation can make sense
A target review is different from rewarding a fund for a good quarter or year. Circumstances that can warrant reconsideration include:
- Your withdrawal date has moved close enough that the portfolio needs a different balance of growth and stability.
- Your ability or willingness to withstand losses has changed after a job, health, family or debt change.
- The goal’s amount, deadline or priority has changed.
- Your broader financial situation now includes assets, liabilities or income sources that alter the risk the portfolio must carry.
- The original target was based on assumptions that are no longer true or cannot be followed in practice.
Document the reason and the new target before trading. A target change should be a forward-looking decision tied to the goal, not a prediction that the winning category will continue to win.
Common reactions that can damage a sound plan
“It won, so I should add more.”
Adding after a rise increases exposure after prices have already moved. First calculate the resulting weight and concentration. If the purchase would breach your written limits, it is a plan change disguised as enthusiasm.
“It lagged, so it must be broken.”
Diversified portfolios deliberately include areas that will lead and lag at different times. Investigate a lagging fund’s mandate, benchmark, costs and changes before removing it. A period of underperformance alone does not prove that the original role is obsolete.
“The exact threshold must be online somewhere.”
No cited source supplies a universal percentage. Choose a practical rule that reflects your account size, trading costs, tax position and ability to monitor, then apply it consistently.
“Past returns tell me what comes next.”
The historical figures above end on December 31, 2024 and are explicitly not forecasts. Treat them as evidence of how leadership can narrow, not as a reason to extrapolate a return.
A repeatable checklist for your next review
- Write the goal, horizon, risk tolerance and current financial circumstances.
- List all holdings and calculate current weights, including concentration and overlap.
- Compare each fund with an appropriate benchmark and comparable investments after fees.
- Read for manager, strategy, benchmark or expense changes.
- Decide whether your original target still fits; do not change it solely because of relative performance.
- Apply your calendar, threshold or combined rebalance rule.
- Use contributions, dividends, interest or withdrawals toward underweights where practical.
- Estimate taxes, spreads, commissions and other account effects before any sale.
- Record the decision and the next review date so a future winner does not reset the process.
